The transition from October to November has definitely been extreme. Just that morning a glistening layer of frost had was seen on the ground and remained while you completed your S.O.R.E. before breakfast, and it has been forecasted that mountains of snow might be making an appearance in the near future. Brace yourselves. Winter is coming, and it looks like it is going to be a very long and cold one this year.
As you make your way out to the Clock Tower Entrance for an oddly scheduled Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson after a long day of classes and post-supper, the chill in the air is almost unbearable and your breath can be seen still in visible puffs as the remainder of the sunset lingers in the horizon. Matching the weather perfectly — almost too perfectly — stands Headmaster Scrimgeour at the threshold of the entrance, his back to the courtyard and wooden bridge beyond. His arms are crossed and his face looks sterner than ever as little flecks of white being trickling down from the sky.
Being that you are not in the classroom setting, there are no desks for your to sit at. There is not even the slightest indication about what the topic of today's lesson will be about. With those icy blue eyes watching you like a hawk, you had better stand firmly in position and wait for further instruction.
OOC: Welcome to the first role-played Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson of the term. Please note that your student character would be familiar with Scrimgeour's no-nonsense style of teaching, his more practical methods, and his classroom rules by now as they have been having lessons with him for a couple months now. Though the lesson has stated, feel free to jump in at any time!

So this was a test, then...
He was just going to lead them right into a potentially dangerous situation with only the spells that were mentioned, and any other they could think of in the moment to protect themselves. Her gaze fell on some of the younger students and she immediately felt bad for them, their knowledge and skill level putting them at a bit of a disadvantage here. She was also happy she had no real attachments at this school yet. No one to worry about but herself. Less of a chance distractions would get her into trouble.
Wand at the ready, the fifth year followed behind the line of students in front of her and tried to prepare for whatever might come their way.

Patrick had followed down the way to the forbidden forest with his classmates. He was really hoping that he didn’t die. He was pretty sure that the headmaster wouldn’t make it possible for the students to die before they had gotten down to the forest. He was hopeful that being in the single file line would allow him a chance to not get approached by an animal at all. He was seriously regretting showing up to class at this point considering he lost points and disliked this class because of his near death experiences in the past.

Well Théo would just use stupify or the knockback jinx in the first place but neither were really defensive or already said so he went with that one. But hey from what he was saying he wasn't wrong which was good enough for this sixth year.
Not really strange at this point that he didnt elaborate since he didnt in the past and never seemed the type to. See this is what Théo liked practical experieince. So here he was smiling with his wand out as he made his way into the forest with everyone in line.
Which really only the line part of this was a drag so far

Slightly apprehensive, Madison made her way down to the Forbidden Forest, trying her best to stay with the group and not fall behind.
So they were going to be tested, and had to defend themselves from red caps with the spells that had been listed. She had figured as much. Well, hopefully she made it out alive, because while red caps were bad enough in her opinion, Madison was much more worried about the acromantulas and wolves. Among other things. Was the Head Master sure that there weren't any lurking about? What if they drew attention to themselves?

Well, he said "very good" and that's not usually a compliment compared to teachers here but Scrimmy?? It was practically a pat on the back. Which, by the way, she was grateful to not have received, it sounded like something that could hurt.
Sylvie did as per instructed, held her wand out and waited for red caps to appear. She could DO this. She was going to prove to him that Hirsch had been fantastic and she herself COULD do this and... and.. she was totally going to watch these red caps bang against the wall she was going to conjure. L-O-L.
It's gonna take a while for her to get over this little joke.

Well, his response to this last question was a lot better than the previous one. He had least hadn't cut her off this time. And her answer wasn't totally wrong. Buuuuttt now they were heading into the forest without any further instruction or direction. Was this his way of weeding out the weak ones? Natalie sincerely hoped that her magic skillz would shine through today and prove that she was NOT a weak one. She didn't want to die.

Indigo, of course, had not given an answer when asked about defensive spells. But he had been listening to his classmate's answers, thankfully. There had been no repeating from the headmaster. He would have liked to know which were the best answers. If they were going to be expected to fight these creatures, he would have liked to know which of the spells were the best ones to use. A few times the headmaster had mentioned that a spell worked fine when there were only a few red caps but something different would be better for larger groups. But which spells, exactly, were the ones that were better for larger groups? In any case, he hoped that they wouldn't be fighting against a large group of red caps today. Or if they were, there were enough of them that they could probably take them.
Indigo held his wand tightly and glanced around warily as they walked into the forest.

Zoryn was bored, disinterested, and 100% done with his dung. For the record, the only reason why she didn't just get up and leave was because she really did want to go into the forrest.
So instead, she followed the person in front of her and stayed quiet for once in her young life. She was half hoping (and by half hoping, I mean she was FULLY hoping) that their Headmaster would fall over a broken branch and crack his obscenely large head open.
In fact, she would've used a bit of nonverbal magic to make it happen if she was capable of advanced magic like that. But unfortunately for her, nonverbals weren't a skill she had mastered quite yet. Drats.
She did have a grip on her wand though, for the moment when the redcapricorn things popped out. She was never really a fan of astrology.

Lucas paused. What did that grunt mean? Was it a good thing? Had his answer been RIGHT? He didn't really know the Headmaster properly - and didn't want to get to know him - but he was sure that the man grunted because..... that was normal for him. Like breathing was normal for, y'know, normal people. Yeah.
And then the man started speaking and he..... didn't know how to feel. He didn't said it was WRONG, did he? Not really. Just that there was a better spell to use than Petrificus Totalus. Which got him thinking about the spell the man was talking about. He..... didn't really know a lot of spells? He knew SOME but..... a shorter spell wasn't coming to him. Not right now.
......... And he really REALLY hoped they weren't going to be attacked by multiple Red Caps. No, thank you.

It was time. It was time to go into the Forbidden Forest that was forbidden but they were going in there. For.......... education?
Yeah. That did NOT help Lucas feel better. Not at all.
He gripped his wand as tightly as he could, already feeling his hands getting very sweaty, the closer and closer they got to the Forest. And they were properly outside but it didn't feel like they were. Maybe he'd just..... need to keep close to someone who was better at the magical thing? Yeah. He silently hoped that the Ravenclaw he was standing behind knew more than he did. And Stella probably knew a lot too.
Lucas tried not to say anything when they set foot inside the Forest and they were faced with obstacles. They were small - like boulders and tall branches - but they still made him feel worse. Branches snagged on his robes and he almost tripped over that boulder back there and he....... couldn't help but wonder HOW he was going to face a bunch of Red Caps like this.
Yeah...... he did not like this.

Anna was SUPER excited to get into the forest, though she tried not to show it... too much. She was honestly terrible at hiding emotions and her excitement was plastered across her face as she held her wand at the ready and followed in line into the forrest.
She couldn't WAIT to tell Matt she had actually gone in there for a lesson, mwaha. He'd be so jealous!
The fact there were some potentially deadly creatures there made her slightly nervous, however, and her heart was beating faster than normal as she intently looked around and tried to hear the smallest noise. The weather added to the whole tense feeling, making Anna even MORE excited and nervous. Asdfghjkl, she just hoped they'd do a good enough job if/when they saw whatever Dark creature that would show up.

Constant vigilance? He nodded in response to Scrim. Yep. Got it. Crystal clear. They gotta watch out for those sneaky Red Caps. Chase nodded and then nudged Anna before saluting her. "I'll watch your back if you watch mine? Gotta watch out for those pesky Red Caps," he nodded. Friends always had to watch out for each other. Besides, he'd watch her back even if she said no. He readied his wand and eyed his surroundings, waiting for something to greet them.
What would be first? Hopefully not a dark creature though perhaps Mr.No Fun's personality would cause the dark creatures to gravitate towards him. After all, like-minded things seemed to collect together... Hmmm...

A hoard? Would that really be a possibility tonight? She wasn't sure if she should reply to his question at the end of him scrutinizing her answer. After all, he was still talking and she needed to listen. She made a mental note of the few spells she could use. It wasn't many, and she wasn't sure if she was really ready to follow everyone into the forest, but there really wasn't any turning back now. They kept marching and the snow slowed as soon as they entered the tree line, but it still fell through whatever open spaces it could find.
Kaitlynn drew out her wand and held it at the ready. The yawns were gone because her heart rate had kicked into overdrive. Was she still exhausted? Yeah. Did the still dropping temperature help? No. She kept her head on the swivel and she wanted to push her way into the center of the two lines and create a circle of people around her. Maybe she was being a little over reactive, after all, the Headmaster couldn't just let them die out here, right?
Further on they marched.

And just like that, it was time to go. Chloe fell into step again behind the classmates ahead of her in line, but her mind was desperately trying to catalogue all the spells her classmates had listed during the last question. Just in case they ran into a Red Cap, right? And honestly, this wasn't a leisurely walk in the woods. They were very likely walking right to the nest of a Red Cap.
And it wasn't likely that they were walking into a situation where they could actually get seriously injured before the professor stepped in, but Chloe wanted to be prepared in case they were asked to perform in front of the professor. She didn't need to do any more pushups today if she disappointed his royal crankypants.

An older Red Cap, who was sporting a white beard, had been snacking on a ferret that it had recently caught and decapitated with its teeth. But he didn't hesitate to drop his meal when the first of the humans showed up. A dribble of blood trickled down into his beard, not that it mattered to him. He was not a happy creature right now. All he wanted was to enjoy his meal in peace.
In true get-off-my-lawn fashion, the old Red Cap came grunted out of his burrow and started swinging his weapon, a bone of an unknown creature that had been sharpened like a dagger at one end, in the air. There was no specific target. He was just trying to scare the humans away.

It had been sleeping soundly when the sound of the older of its kind echoed between the trees. Furrowed in an opening of a tree trunk, an adult Red Cap peeked his head through the opening. Humans. Its teeth were barred, and he made quick work of grabbing the femur bone he had taken from the remains of a skeleton it had found and tracked its prey.
His cap was beginning to fade. That was just unacceptable. Without any warning, he snuck behind the duo at the back of the moving line and swung at one of them.

Whispers and footsteps. They heard whispers and footsteps. The two teenage Red Caps shared glances at each other and then grinned. Red eyes soon targeted one of the smaller humans. That one seemed like it had a head that would be perfect for decoration.
The more eager of the two ran toward them and did a flying kick, going straight for the legs. The other came running after, a thick tree branch swinging in the air.

A mother Red Cap was tending to her little child when the humans appeared. Instantly she was threatened by them. It was not often that their territory was disturbed by the likes of them. She had to protect her young.
She stood at the entrance of her makeshift home in one of the trees. Her teeth were barred, her hands ready to dig into the skin of any human who dared come her way.

On the opposite side of a large boulder up ahead, an adult Red Cap had been enjoying a tasty snack, the liver of a deer. It wasn't his favourite meal, but it would do for the time being. But it seemed that the odds were in his favour and that today was his lucky day: a bigger, tastier meal was to be had.
So he waited for the humans to come closer. His trusty bone at the ready, and his need of human flesh caused the adrenaline to fuel him.

Two young Red Caps, likely twin sisters, had been searching for faeries, more out of play than anything. But soon different playmates came into view. The pair didn't move from their position. They just stood there, eerily watching, their beady red eyes fixated on the humans.
If they could speak the human tongue, they would definitely be saying 'come play with us' in unison.

A male Red Cap had made shelter up in the branches of a nearby tree, using his sharp nails to climb up it. The commotion happening down below caused him to glance down, much to his relief. His cap was in great need of fresh blood, for the red had faded quite significantly.
Rather than stealthily climb down the tree, however, it jumped, falling right on top of one of the humans.

A gang of several male Red Caps had been trying to win over the favour of one of the uglier (since the Red Caps loved ugly above all else) female Red Caps within the area not far away. A number were presenting her with their kill, whereas others were quite literally on the verge of beating each other to death.
The sight of the humans made them all stop and stare. The males all looked to the female. All it took was a nasty grin from the female to send the other Red Caps running, their weapons of choice ready for bludgeoning. | |

Thw first cap, noy that tall, surprisingly came swinging. Skyler waved her wand.
"Expeliarmus!" She shouted aiming at the old red cap with the beerd.
Skyler quickly looked around. She saw a couple in the trees, she stepped far away from the momma and her babies. Skyler jumped out of the way from a couple.
"Stupify!" She shouted hoping to stun them.
At this point, it was complete chaos!

Soooooo more points were being lost, and Zoryn, she got a small look of respect. Beth wasn’t saying anything, not at all, she was just standing there watching Headmaster Scrimgeur reacting to everyone…oh, Chase she winced when she heard how sternly Scrimgeur responded to the mention of Centaurs.
Riiiiiight so they were marching to the forest. Did anyone else think that this was a bit…military school like?....Cal’s reaction about slashing it made Beth wince. That was intense indeed. She was silent, not answering anything at all. Instead of answering anything she just stayed in formation with her wand ready.
Oh…so Chase was going to protect Anna…hmm, did that redcap just bare its teeth? Marching closer toward Chase, Beth just walked closer to the Gryffnindor Chaser. It was then that she felt it, there was a THUMP and a redcap was on top of her. ”get off of me” she snapped as she began trying to pry the creature from her – ”petrificus totalus” she cast her wand pointing awkwardly at the redcap. Did it hit? She didn’t know – maybe it just stilled her hair or the leaves above her.

It was JUST her luck that almost immediately after Madison had thought she was not ready to die, there were TWO red caps coming towards her. She screeched as one ran towards her, trying to knock her over with a kick to the legs, and the other swinging a tree branch at her. She dodged them the best that she could, trying not to panic.

| A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
He did not want to be here. He wanted to be safe inside of the castle not walk to his death in the Forbidden Forest. WHY had he even come to class today?! Had he known this would have happened he'd have refused to show up. But the Headmaster taught the subject....he couldn't say no or else Ravenclaw would risk points loss, or he'd been thrown in detention OR even getting expelled. He could see him do that with ease. Actually, it had come as a surprise to him that some of the students hadn't been kicked out yet.
Wand at the ready, eventhough Dorian knew that it made no difference if he had one or not as a tree branch thrown hard enough could break throw his defensive spells. At the sight of a group of Red Caps. SERIOUSLY WHY A GROUP?! who seemed to be trying to win over an ugly female, Dorian froze for a moment before they started to attack.
With a LOUD and TERRIFIED shriek that could possibly alert the whole forest, Dorian threw the first spell that came to mind "Impedimenta!" to slow them down whíle he.....turned around and ran away. His specialty.

It was strange how things could change so drastically within a small amount of time. One second, they were all waiting, expectantly for something to show up, the next, there were several attacking them! One was even on top of another student (Annabeth).
Without warning, he felt something connect hard against the back of his legs again and again! Falling to the ground in heap, he couldn’t help but turn mid fall and see an older Red Cap advancing on him, ancient bone clasped tightly in its claws. Hopefully it was too old to do any real damage.
Pointing his wand straight at the creature now, giving his wand a wave, he cried “Arresto Momentum!” causing the creature to slow to the point where he had time to compose himself and get back to his feet. Thinking quickly back to some of the spells his fellow classmates suggested now, his heart threatening to jump out of his chest, he gave his wand another flick and shouted “Expelliarmus” disarming the red cap of his unusually sharp bone. Taking a deep breath now, he looked around at the chaos around him, ready to help any of his class mates, a somewhat calmness taking over him.

OI, and the Hufflepuff prefect STOLE Sylvie's wall spell!
Glaring at Daisy for a brief moment, the sixth year quickly realised she had bigger problems at the present moment. Namely that a GROUP of these gross little goblin like people were running STRAIGHT AT HER and some other people (Dorian). Who, er, were running away. Okay, okay, this was fine, this was like August at the Ministry all over again, she could DO this.
"PROTEGO MUNIO!" well she was already thinking about it and it seemed the most effective cast to protect herself from UGLY RED CAP MEN. But she didn't leave it at just that, Sylvie knew better than to trust herself with just the one protection spell. Thank you Professor Hirsch! She'd never be here without you! ... Literally too, if you hadn't left! (Not the point!)
What what is?? UH UH OH! YES! "Fianto Duri!" Sylvie cast right at her newly created wall, making it SUPER STRONG. Let's see them get past THAT. Sylvie-1, ugly red caps-0. HA.

Nathan was caught off guard by several male Red Caps running towards them with their boney weapons. He quickly drew out his wand and blast a stick-fast hex at their direction. “Colloshoo!” He gave another flick of his wand, “Expelliarmus!” he shouted. He wanted them to disarm their weapons before they could hurt any of them.

Her heart was already pounding with fear adrenaline and she managed to jump out of the way, shooting a disarming spell at him to rid him of his branch.
