Graphci credit goes to shanners

One of those changes is the policy to allow people in. Members of the public are welcome to come in and get a visitor pass from the receptionist then they can peruse an abbreviated archive of Daily Prophet editions, sign up for a subscription, speak with a journalist, or submit their own piece if they are a freelance writer. While they may not be able to explore the building in its entirety, the reception area welcomes the wizarding public to come and see their newspaper.

OOC: Feel free to RP in this thread interacting with the receptionist (Deesey), looking at old papers, signing up for subscriptions, needing a journalist, looking for the editor, ducking in out of the rain, whatever you'd like.

How on earth did he comes across a few old things from his time at the Daily Prophet, it had been years since he worked there, but after the fire he thought maybe the new people working would maybe enjoy some things from the old days, plus some of his ex-coworkers were probably still around.

Pushing open the doors he felt a bit odd as he stood in the new reception area. If he was being honest with himself it was a blessing it burned to the ground and was rebuilt. He had trouble walking into the office after the attack on him and Basil and now this was new. It was like he had never been here at all. His mind went to Basil and wondering how the man was doing,
maybe he'd have to stop by for a visit after he left.

Seeing someone else standing there he gave them one of his signature smiles, "Hello"

WELCOME TO THE DAILY PROPHET HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE!

The Daily Prophet has decided to open their doors for an evening to invite the community in. With recent editor changes and new staff on board. Editor Jorge Cristo De La Garza had been convinced by some of his coworkers that it could be fun. So he let them decorate and the community was made known about the special event. In the public notice, it had said to bring a can good to donate to the Wizarding Foodbank.

As you come into the reception area you are greeted with decorations, music, and the smell of hot chocolate and peppermint. Help yourself to the hot chocolate bar where you can make your own creation with the variety of marshmallows, white chocolate pieces, caramel, whip cream, and a few other tasting things. Monica is there to greet you and point you in the direction of the offices to start the tour. Have fun exploring the prophet, seeing it's traditions as well as the new and improved areas.

If you like to sing there is a small group in the corner starting to sing Christmas Carols.

The Daily Prophet was certainly festive. That was Simon’s first thought as he entered the reception area from off of Diagon Alley. Not entirely what he expected from the paper, or Jorge, but then perhaps it was a way of celebrating and revitalizing for the upcoming new year. The ministry way himself had opted for a red shirt with his suit to show he was cooperating with the season. It was also supposedly going to match with his wife when his other half joined him after closing up shop. The kids to be occupied with their grandparents for the evening to let them have a night out. It was still feeling so new to have to be concerned with that responsibility.

Walking further inside and grateful for the warmth, he let his observant attention take in the sights sounds and smells that permeated the building. He was off duty so he could let his guard down in the public space should he allow himself, though he was aware that Lex and some of her team were scheduled to be around. It seemed one could never completely be at ease when letting strangers in a strange land.

Closure was what brought the now 20-year-old to the Prophet this day. So she had convinced herself at least.

It had been several years since she had last step foot inside this place. In fact, the last time that Paige could recall giving this part of Diagon Alley any real consideration had been when it had burned down many years ago. More memories that the former Hufflepuff wished she could Obliviate from her memory right now. This time of year was hard enough for other reasons outside of the loss of daddy, and she felt as though she were fooling herself under the guise of seeking some sort of closure in coming here. Perhaps she had become addicted to a burdened and broken heart and that was what had truly brought her here now.

But as her Converse shoes - red in homage to the late Editor-in-Chief who never went a day without them on his feet while working here - there was an eerie lightness...and she could recall so vividly how he had ushered her through these doors when she was a little girl, not even Hogwarts age, and let her help with the printing press. A published author herself now, although not in the newspapers with hard hitting journalism as she had once imagined herself doing (following in his footsteps), she felt accomplished and even laughed softly under her breath. Although the latter was more because of the irony of the timing. Basil Skeeter had always been quite the Scrooge around Christmas and any holiday for that matter.

She recognized the gentleman there from her extensive cataloging of the yearbook archives back at Hogwarts, but his name at the moment escaped her. He had graduated before her feet had ever stepped foot inside the castle, after all. Still, she offered him a polite wave and began moving about the space, her slender fingers running over the reception desk fondly.

Everything looked different...but its essence was still there.

He had been in the back or awhile and finally decided to come up front and make sure things were going smoothly. Glancing at the group singing he couldn't help but smile. He bet Alejandro and Regina would have liked this stuff and he probably could have let them come, but it was better to just be focused on the people and not his own children. He had taken his kids to WSPM many times, but now that he was here, it felt better for them not to be here. He possibly was still being protective after the things that had gone down many moons ago, but he didn't care.

His eyes first fell on Simon and he smiled, "I hope you aren't here to arrest me, just because I'm with the Prophet again doesn't mean I'm coming after your girl." He was joking, of course, the two were good friends now and that episode was water under the bridge. Going closer to the man he reached out to shake his hand. "Nice of you to join us, I've heard the hot chocolate bar is the highlight of this area." He'd much rather have the eggnog though, so he wouldn't be getting hot chocolate. "Speaking of that lovely wife of yours, will she be joining us this evening?" He knew his own wife was here somewhere, maybe the four of them could have a toast or something together.

Turning he noticed a young lady, one he had recognized though he might not have shown it to everyone. Guilt tugged at him when he thought of her, though he knew what had happened wasn't entirely his fault, but he knew he hadn't helped it much. He hadn't kept in touch the way he wanted to either. He knew he and Basil hadn't been well since that night, but his own health and need to be away pushed him further rather than staying and helping. That part he'd never fully forget. He smiled and motioned her over. "Good evening, I'm glad you could join us." He looked at Simon and then to the girl, her name not hitting him right at first. "I hope I can make your father proud in this position." That was something Jorge fully meant and would work hard to do.

Ziggy wasn't entirely sure why she had come. Perhaps it was to see Paige and make sure her protege was okay. Perhaps it was...to see the new and hopefully improved Daily Prophet? As a journalist from WHiM, though she would hardly call herself that, she found the newspapers quite fascinating after being on the writing end for many years now. Her dream interpretations SLAAAASSSHH semi advice column were doing all right. Her real money was made doing her 'day' job, her therapy with people. Her clients.

She had her daughter with her today because Kohaku was absolutely sickly with fever currently, and she thought she'd get Aboli out the house. The girl was going a little stir crazy. Her near seven year old was growing to be less erratic and more poised in social situations, and Ziggy blamed it partly on her...empathic ways.

"Aboli, Paige is here." She said with a smile. The child, a mixture of both her and Solomon PERFECTLY in looks, look up at her quizzically for a second before looking to spot one of her favorite adults.

Maybe it was because it had been too long. Or perhaps it was because this was not the same desk that had been here when her father had served as Editor-in-Chief, but some of the resonance she had been longing to feel as her hand grazed over the smooth surface just wasn't there. Her bright blue eyes fell upon the tiny owl mark at the base of her thumb, stomach twisting uncomfortably and heart racing at some memories but she quickly pushed those aside when she heard Mr. De La Garza address her.

"He loved this place," she said softly, faint smile dancing upon her pale pink lips. "Was the only thing that kept him going for a while." Before the incident that had changed everything. One that he had never fully been able to remember. That he had never recovered from...but at least now his battle was over. "Work...writing...it was is life. Even until the end..." Of which she had evidence of tucked away in the desk, his desk, back at her small loft apartment. A letter she still did not have the courage to open. "He would be glad seeing the Prophet still operational."

Glancing around, Paige knew she would not see Scout here...but the WU London student had been somewhat hoping to run into Victoria or... "Does Kenrick still work here?" she asked, her attention turning back to the now Editor-in-Chief. She had always rather liked that reporter.

It was then that Paige spotted Ziggy and, perhaps more importantly, Aboli. Her face immediately brightened some, although her insides were still a bit of a mess, and she beckoned the little girl over to her. "Aboli...maybe you can help me with something. If Mr. De La Garza approves that is."

It was small and silly, but Paige needed to do it.

There was a young woman who walked into the reception area. Simon inclined his head to acknowledge her presence, not sure about bothering her. However, he got a wave in return which made him curious. Did he know her? A younger student while he was in school that remembered him when he didn’t her? She certainly wasn’t a coworker or a ministry worker which would have been his most common realm of familiarity in recent years. He was better at those faces…for professional reasons. Simon tentatively waved back before his attention was drawn to a familiar voice who was addressing him.

“That depends…have you been doing something I should arrest you for?” he remarked calmly, his face neutral as he turned to the editor before giving a short snort as Jorge’s words continued. “I do remember the real trouble was when you thought I was coming after YOUR girl,” Simon said before chuckling and accepting the offered hand with his own. “Nice to be invited, or at least allowed in.” It wasn’t a personal invited but his friend was personal welcoming him in. As for the hot chocolate. “I’ll be sure to check it out.”

It wasn’t like he had an aversion to hot chocolate the way he did coffee.

“She’s coming…just been busy with the shop.” Angelina didn’t have the same freedom of hours as he had managed despite both leading their respective careers. It was then that his host noticed the young woman who had waved to him earlier and Simon let himself return his attention to her. Jorge obviously knew her and at mention of her father, he grew curious. Had her father held the editor position? Which former editor?

His memory and observation skills went to work and he realized by the conversation he was being made privy too, she was likely the daughter of the man who had been attacked when Jorge had been. Simon was about to actually greet the young woman when her attention was dragged by another newcomer and a young girl so he remained quiet.

The more people were coming in the more Jorge relaxed and went into his element. He had always liked being social and keeping an eye on a story, so why not use those skills to get through this evening as well. He couldn't help but chuckle when Simon asked if he had a reason to be
arrested, "Give it time, now that I'm back here there could be endless possibilities." Though probably not, but the controversial stories had a way to find him when he was here. Another chuckle had come when he brought up the real reason he had been arrested. "Well we don't have to worry about that anymore. How is your family?" They both were married with children now, things had changed plenty for both of them.

"Of course you would be invited and always welcomed in." THe two might have had issues to start but worked out and now friends were much better. He knew Simon had helped when he had most needed it and he would be forever grateful for that.

Miss Skeeter seemed a bit nervous or maybe he was reading her wrong, but Jorge couldn't imagine how she felt being there. "Well I tried to remodel a bit when I first came back to bring back some of the ways he had run it. He taught me many things even if I would have never admitted." Jorge knew he was great at what he did and never felt he needed advice from anyone, but he had learned a few things working under Basil and those things he brought back to the prophet. He felt a ping of sadness as she talked, what he had gone through. Jorge had been attacked, but at that moment he did feel like he was the lucky one.

He had to shake his head to her question though, "No, I'm afraid not. Not many from when we all worked here were still here, but I assume many had to find other things when the fire happened." He couldn't be sure since he hadn't been here, but that was a guess he had. Seeing another woman and a child walk close he smiled. The little girl was close to Alejandro's age and he looked at the two women as Paige said if he approved.

"What would that be that you are looking for?"

Aboli wasted no time running over to Ziggy and hugging her. She was growing taller almost every DAY, Ziggy felt...turning into such a lanky little girl. Her brown eyes were bright and curious still. "What?" she asked with her head tilted to the side. She grabbed Paige's hand almost immediately, but let go just as quickly, frowning. Frowning...a lot. She kept her hands behind her back.

Ziggy just smiled and stroked the back of her daughter's head. She merely smiled at Jorge before nodding her head at him and the other man. "It's nice to meet you both. My name is Ziggy LeFeuvre. I'm a friend of Paige's." And she put a protective arm around the young woman.

Aww how cute. A holiday open house at her work. She kind of liked seeing the office all decorated up in true holiday fashion. Opting for a white v-neck sweater with a festive red scarf and black pants paired with black booties, Arabella checked her appearance in the bathroom mirror and turned around before pausing in her tracks. Smiling she decided to let her personality shine through with this last option and donned a santa hat because why not! This was a holiday open house and it was going to be fun so she was going to have some fun while reminding people that there was a foodbank to help. With one final glance, she headed out to the open house.

Okay truth be told, Arabella had been VERY hesitant of how all of this would turn out but seeing how nice the reception looked, Arabella couldn't help but feel impressed. So their hard work HAD paid off after all. She wished her father could have been here to see this. Who knew? Maybe he would stop by?

Then she saw Mr. Boss Man, Jorge, there. "Hello!" she greeted the guests with a nod and a rare smile as she made her way over to Jorge. She paused, waiting for a moment not to interrupt his conversation. "Hi. Excuse me for interrupting, Jorge... Do you need any help out here?" she asked.

Paige was still acutely aware of the Auror, but it was always difficult dividing her attention when Aboli was present. Perhaps it was the manner in which their empathy resonated in one another, but the former Hufflepuff was more willing to accept that it was her fondness for the girl that made it so. But soon guilt rolled around in her stomach like an unwelcomed guest when she took the university student's hand and quickly dropped it. It was all Paige could do to offer a small look of apology to her.
She had been trying, but she felt even more vulnerable and out of control with her heart than ever before.

Mouthing a small 'I'm okay' - even if she knew the little girl wouldn't believe her - Paige turned her attention back to Mr. De La Garza with a soft smile. Her heart sank a little despite his words. Remodel. It was in that moment that she realized why she felt so detached upon entering here. Even with her particular sense of touch, she couldn't feel anything. She had more of a connection with the Department of Mysteries really. "Did...they ever figure out who had burned the Prophet down?" she asked, voice a bit distant. That had been a turning point in a lot of ways for daddy. Everything he had worked to build and create...destroyed by a match or a well placed Incendio. Or perhaps something more sinister if whoever it was that had Imperio'd him had come back for one more strike. But the Hufflepuff had not allowed herself to dwell on these thoughts, nor those of revenge - she had far too much else on her mind.

But one thing had become clear to the almost 21-year-old: she would not find the closure she had hoped...because there was none to have. He was gone, and it was a hard pill to swallow that that would never feel like a completed chapter in her life's book.

Her gaze drifted to Ziggy for a moment, hoping that the look in her eyes would convey her inner turmoil - although the shimmer that was certain to assist with that cause - and then looked back to Mr. De La Garza. "He...was the one who started me on origami when I was little..." And the reason the title of her poetry book had changed from Moonflower to Paper Flowers, because of his influence. Because those had been the last words he had spoken to her. "Was just wondering if...perhaps...with some old Prophets from the time he served as Editor-in-Chief here if...I could fold some to keep? As a decoration?" Just a simple single string to hang from one corner of the office.

And maybe eventually she would find the strength to write something about her father for the Prophet. EVen if it took the one year anniversary of his passing for her to finally put her quill to parchment on the matter.

At the arrival of another woman, one of the new journalist she assumed, Paige simply bowed her head and offered a small polite smile.

Give it time… endless possibilities.

Had he and Jorge still be on the outs with each other, that comment, even with the seemingly innocent laughter, would have gotten Simon’s hackles up in defense. But then the former auror knew first hand what his companion was capable of. “I’ll alert the cavalry,” he mused nonchalantly but a touch of jest in his tone. And no…the tension had been cleared up and they were now very happily married family men. Just how much time had passed since they first met?

“Fascinating…” Simon answered, “Does that work as a good descriptor.” Jorge had certainly had more experience in the family mode. The security man was still so fresh and new to the feelings and experiences and he hadn’t had a long time to prepare for not one but two children at once due to the adoptions. “But a good fascinating.” There was no denying that he was happy. “How about yours?” He got periodic updates from occasional run-ins in with Mariel though it had been a few weeks.

The younger girl, Aboli he deduced, was clearly excited to see the young writer following in her father’s footsteps. The girl rushing to her to envelope her in a hug. Simon continued on the outside until her mother introduced herself to him and Jorge, gaining a nod of acknowledgement from the law enforcement man. “Nice to meet you, Ms. LeFeuvre” he remarked with a polite smile, sticking to formalities for now. “I’m Simon Bennett.” Acquaintance of the editor but he was here as a simple community member as well so his connection needn’t be shared.

Did they figure out who had set the fire?

Simon blinked in realization that he actually couldn’t readily answer that question. Was it because it hadn’t been his responsibility as the search for justice would have fallen into the hands of either the aurors or hit wizards or a combination of both? Was he disconnected enough to miss that? Perhaps. Whatever the reason, it seemed the man the question had been aimed at was likely more informed, at least at the moment. If Jorge had no answer, Simon was sure to be checking it out back at the office when he got there next.

And then there was an employee of Jorge’s…

Jorge didn't let the little girl go unnoticed. He smiled at her and walked to the counter where the candy canes were. "Would you like one?" He offered before unwrapping one for himself. He knew that children sometimes didn't trust adults, which was a good thing, but he thought maybe if he ate one she'd be able to trust him a little more. Stretching out his hand he offered to the woman, "Jorge Cristo De La Garza, it's a pleasure to meet you. Though I have read a few of your pieces before." He kept up with competition and other forms of media so he had heard her name before.

Seeing another member of his team come in he gave her a nod before turning to his guest, "This is one of our newest members, Arabella Bernadotte Morgenstern. Abraella our youngest guest here might enjoy some of the hot chocolate if her mother allows." This way the little one could be having some fun while the adults talk about whatever Paige had been wanting to ask.

He frowned at her first question though, that was something that weighed heavily on his mind. "The last report I saw about it was that it was ruled an accident, though I do not feel it was." He couldn't shake the feeling that it was done to cover up what had happened here with Basil. Now the favor had left him a little more in thought. "I can help you with this to the point of I can let you in the archived area and you can look through and find the pieces you would like, but I have to ask if you could make a double of them so that we can hold on to the originals for our records." He wanted to grant her what she was after, but he needed to keep what he had organized as well.

Jorge couldn't help but laugh with Simon's comment, the once enemies surely knew how to joke now. He found Simon's answer to the family question very interesting. Fascinating wasn't an answer you got most of the time when you asked about one's family, but he was glad that it was good. "Mine is growing way too fast. I can't believe how quickly time goes with them. I feel like we were just holding Regina in our arms after she was born and now she is going to be 9. Cherish every moment because in a blink they are grown and wanting their friends more than you." He knew his children were still young, but they acted so grown up at times he just wanted them to be toddlers for a bit longer.

Deesey was excited. It was Deesey's first day of work at the paper as the new receptionist. Before arriving inside the building with a loud pop!, Dessey had put on her best dress (which really was a fancy bit of a turquoise petal tablecloth) and made a quick batch of biscuits. Deesey was hoping to make a good first impression with all of her new wizard and witch colleagues.

Deesey, of course, had to snap her fingers to levitate the plate onto the desk. It was too tall for Deesey. And Deesey even had to climb up the chair in order to sit on it. But to Deesey those were just little things. Deesey was just happy to be there. Deesey spinning around on the chair, a smile on her face, was proof enough of that.

Jorge had been at the office early. He had been coming in early since the kidnapping of his son happened. The ordeal had brought back so many issues and sleeping was one of the biggest. His mind went back to the day him and Basil had been attacked in his very office. Even though he thought he was over it.

Hearing the loud pop made the man jump even from his office he heard the entrance of his new employee, but without seeing her his wand was up and he headed down the hall. Nerves jumped right away, it wasn't until he saw the chair spinning that he took a deep breath and pocketed the wand.

"Good Morning Deesy, if we need to adjust anything here please let me know." He knew she was smaller than the usual, but that didn't mean he wouldn't make her feel comfortable in her new place of work.

Deesey had been enjoying her spinning so much that she wasn't paying attention to what was going on. At the sound of a male voice, Deesey jumped up and nearly fell off the high chair. Dessey's heart was racing at a million miles per hour.

"Oh! Mast - Mister De La Garza, Deesey just had quite a fright!" Deesey wheezed, placing a tiny hand on the desk to stop herself from spinning around and around.

Deesey looked up at the man, her eyes wide. Deesey didn't want them to fuss over her. Dessey could overcome a lot of obstacles, like a tall desk or chair, all on her own. "No, no, no, Mister De La Garza. Deesey is managing just fine, Sir. Thank you, Sir," Deesey said to him as she grabbed a plate that was bigger than her head and held it up to him. "Would Mister De La Garza be interested in one of Deesey's biscuits? Deesey made them just this morning!"

Nomi had been wanting to work in London ever since she moved there six months prior and this seemed such an ideal place to look for work.

She walked up to the reception desk and gave a smile as she pushed her glasses up her nose. "Hello there. My name is Nomi Caplan and I am here for a job interview. I'm applying for a position as a fashion and beauty columnist/advisor."

He really didn't mean to frighten the elf, but she had scared him at first, though he'd never admit it. Watching her for a moment he just listened, glad she wanted to work so hard, but he still wanted her to feel comfortable. "If you are sure you are comfortable. You are part of this team now senorita and I want you to feel at home."

When she offered a biscuit how could he say no, so Jorge picked it up and took a bite just as the door opened. Caught with food in his mouth he turned and tried to quickly chew.

Mumbling something not very understood and looked to Deesy to take help him for a moment with their guest he took off out of the reception area to clear his mouth and get a glass of water so he could come back a little more professional.

Nomi did notice the man with the food in his mouth. However, she thought it was best to not say anything. Besides, she needed to prepare herself for her interview. This was her first job interview and she wanted to make a really good impression.

Deesey thought Mast - Mister De La Garza was a good wizard. Deesey could tell from his response that he cared about how Deesey was feeling, which made her feel really good. Deesey couldn't help but let giggle, especially when he took one of her biscuits.

"Yes, Mister De La Garza. Deesey is fine, Sir. Deesey is very fine indeed," Dessey confirmed once again. Deesey paused for a moment, watching the man chew, and opened her mouth to ask what he thought and if he wanted another.

Deesey had no words to say, however. Deesey was distracted by someone new, someone she didn't know. "Hello, Mist - Miss Caplan," Deesey cheerfully replied to the woman. "Mister De La Garza is..."

Deesey squeaked. Deesey didn't realise that Mister De La Garza had left the reception area. Deesey's eyes bulged and she looked around frantically.

"Oh! Oh no! Deesey welcomes you to have a biscuit, Miss Caplan. Deesey will get Mister De La Garza right away," Deesey continued, her words coming out very fast, as she jumped off the chair and ran after her new boss. "Mister De La Garza! Mister De La Garza! Miss Caplan is here to see you!"

Deesey thought Mast - Mister De La Garza was a good wizard. Deesey could tell from his response that he cared about how Deesey was feeling, which made her feel really good. Deesey couldn't help but let giggle, especially when he took one of her biscuits.

"Yes, Mister De La Garza. Deesey is fine, Sir. Deesey is very fine indeed," Dessey confirmed once again. Deesey paused for a moment, watching the man chew, and opened her mouth to ask what he thought and if he wanted another.

Deesey had no words to say, however. Deesey was distracted by someone new, someone she didn't know. "Hello, Mist - Miss Caplan," Deesey cheerfully replied to the woman. "Mister De La Garza is..."

Deesey squeaked. Deesey didn't realise that Mister De La Garza had left the reception area. Deesey's eyes bulged and she looked around frantically.

"Oh! Oh no! Deesey welcomes you to have a biscuit, Miss Caplan. Deesey will get Mister De La Garza right away," Deesey continued, her words coming out very fast, as she jumped off the chair and ran after her new boss. "Mister De La Garza! Mister De La Garza! Miss Caplan is here to see you!"

When she was offered a biscuit, Nomi shook her head and answered with a, "No, thanks, Deesey. I'm a bit nervous to eat right now. I appreciate the gesture, though." Nomi waited patiently as she heard the house-elf call after her boss.

It wasn't every day they got visitors coming into the Prophet and Jorge had known better when he had just put out the information on hiring, but the biscuits had been too good to resist. As soon as he left though he heard Deesay chasing after him. No, no, no she was to be entertaining the woman until he got back. He would have to speak to her later about that, but for now he gave a smile. "Sorry, just needed to clear my throat."

Taking one more swig of water he headed back out with Deesay, "Sorry about that, Miss..." Oh no, what was her name? He glanced down at the application paper, "Caplan. Please have a seat and we can get started. Deesay could you please get Miss Caplan and myself some tea."
