Jonathan was a bit new to the whole ambiance of not having too many students to answer one teacher. Maybe because this class is only held for the 6th and 7th years. And now that he thinks about it, there are only a few of the higher years at Hogwarts. Jonathan barely even knows people from the same year with him.
Okay.... FOCUS.
But then Jonathan smiled when the magical transportation teacher decided to give them treats. Jonathan is a big lover for sweets. So he is liking this class more and more..... chocolate frog.... his favorite!
Jonathan listened as Miss Grey lectured about the magical transportation and a little bit of the broomsticks. General information about such stuffs are always important.
After taking a few bites from the candy, she gave out the second question. How have brooms changed since the past? What all features have been added??? Jonathan blinked. He looked at the picture she showed them. It was old and it looked a little bit dangerous than the ones they have now.
Jonathan raised his hand "The brooms before were made purely for flying." yes, that is why it is known to be the first magical transportation as Miss Grey had said earlier "Nowadays, brooms are more comfortable to sit in with the help of the cushioning charm. It's more lightweight and uhmmm....they have foot rests" if he may add "...fashionable." in a way, yes. Some brooms were made sleeker and some expensive ones had intricate designs. "I guess because the brooms nowadays are faster thus making it more durable to prevent witches and wizards from any accidents." Jonathan put his hand down. Well, that was worth a try.
Then he finished off the rest of his chocolate frog. Can they get more?
Oh good, they majority of them all seemed to understand that Apparition wasn't the only form of Magical Transportation available to witches and wizards in these modern times. They would make decent adults upon graduation if they kept it up.
Inez was proud.
"Aha," She knew someone would mention these. "Miss Johanson here has named one of the the other flying modes of transportation that may be used around the world, however here in Great Britain, flying carpets are deemed illegal. We will talk more about this later." Inez said with a small smile at the Ravenclaw girl.
"The Knight Bus is a commonly used mode of transport for the British wizarding community but it would fall into the 'special' category of Muggle-converted transportation systems along with the Hogwarts Express. But that may be touched on later aswell." It was good that they knew of some others forms besides just the norm.
--------------
"You all were correct! The four main branches of Magical Transportation are Apparition, Floo Fireplaces, Broomsticks, and Portkeys and those are the ones that my department in the Ministry work to regulate and patrol." It was a lot of paper work and checking in with people but it was definately exciting work. "And as a few of you stated each of them are just as important and exciting as the other." Special emphasis on the exciting part. Just because they weren't apparating this lesson didn't mean they wouldn't have fun.
Hmm now where shall they go next?
Before she was going to trudge on any further, the department head was a tad bit bothered by the sad expression the students all seemed to be sporting and she guessed it was for the reason she had assumed would be true when writing up the lesson. She reached into the desk that was for her to use and produced a large box of candies. Inez then walked down the aisle and handed them each a chocolate frog for their correct answers.
There candy made kids happier right?
"Let's see, because Miss. Johanson and Mr. Roberts have brought the focus onto forms of transport you can ride, we will begin with brooms. Brooms were first seen being used for a mode of transportation way back in A.D. 963. People of the time decided that flying was by far the fastest way to get from one place to another." She nodded and continued to pace infront of the class.
"Mind, this was before the establishment of the International Statute of Secrecy so this posed a problem for these early magical folk. How would they keep their flying secret from the Muggles? That was when it was decided that broomsticks would be used. They were a common item in the home and wouldn't raise any suspision."
Inez held up a large photograph to show the class:
SPOILER!!: click me!
"How have brooms changed since the past? What all features have been added?"
Ah right. Brooms. He knew the Knight Bus sounded weird. But it was a cool bus. So it did sort of count.
He looked around the class as he waited for other students to answer the brooms question. Aaron knew next to nothing about brooms. Just that they were basically sticks to fly on.
They looked cool though.

As much as Ellie LOVED brooms and flying and stuff, she was pretty sure she wasn't in Vindictus' lesson. She wanted to APPARATE. Not talk about...
CHOCOLATE.
It was all good, basically. She could talk about broomsticks for hours, sure. As long as she had candy. Heh.
"They've been given cushioning charms, for one," she said, unwrapping the frog. "And foot rests. Racing brooms are made sleeker and more aerodynamic. Well, they all are compared to the dinosaur days when brooms were first made to fly, but racing brooms especially so they can go faster when you play Quidditch." And despite WHY brooms were made in the FIRST place, their primary use was TOTALLY for Quidditch. Totally. "And they can turn better."
And that was all the girl had to say about that. So she bit one of the frog's back legs off.

Ah yes, brooms. Keefer was extremely happy that there had been several modifications since their inception. He raised his hand to reply. "Ma'am, brooms have changed a lot. They have been made more lightweight and aerodynamic by changes to the materials used. The spells used to enchant them are far more numerous and sophisticated, including protection against Dark Magic. The Cushioning Charm is an obvious bonus as well." And one he was sincerely thankful for every time he rode a broom. "The basic design of the broomstick is the same, but racing models will go to the extent of tailoring every twig, every contour of the handle to exact specifications for optimum speed." Like the Firebolt series, which was the first to do so.
He still wasn't sure how this knowledge would help him Apparate, but he couldn't very well complain. Nor could he just walk out in the middle of a lesson. Besides, she may be right and this information will prove useful for Apparition. But all things considered, he doubted it would.

She chewed on it happily as she listened to the professor continue to speak.
Had the people also realized flying was by far the most dangerous way of getting from one place to another as well?! Obviously not. Selena continued to chew on the chocolate, allowing the thingy to melt in her mouth.
She stopped midchew at the sight of the black and white photograph. How had they changed? Selena had absolutely no idea. "I know they're still broom-y and dangerous!" Selena offered. "And apparently faster, so it's more dangerous... and deadly... and stuff," Selena said, through a mouth full of chocolate. Finishing off the chocolate frog, Selena took out a tissue and wiped her mouth.
Chocolate was good.

She listened to some of the answers and tried to think what had been added to brooms to make them better, stronger, or safer than they used to be. And maybe, slightly more conspicuous than they had been when Flying a broom would most likely mean you'd be burnt at the stake.
She wasn't a fan of brooms at all really but she'd give it a go. Politely raising her hand once more, as she was kind of a stickler for manners herself. She answered. "Well there are charms on some brooms so that when you fly over muggles the broom and its rider are disillusioned and become more transparent, you aren't exactly invisible but neither you or the brook look like you are there. Still, its not a strong illusion so you have to be careful fore an observant muggle might notice the shape of a leg in cloud and it'd be a little awkward." Taking a quick breath she listed some more things that had been added. "cushion seats, cushioning charms, foot rests, handles for steering, spells and charms on the brooms so that when and if you crash the broom does not splinter and is therefore harder to break" there were obviously more - right? She wasn't a broom wiz but some people were and clearly could rattle things off like it was no problem what so ever.

"All perfect answers." She said with a nod and a smile. They certainly new a bit about brooms it seemed but they did however watch or participate in Quidditch all the time here at Hogwarts it seemed.
"Like each of you have said, brooms have been given many different cushioning charms to make for longer journeys more comfortable. They have been given more sophisiticated breaking and turning and their physical shape and structure have been more refined." She reached beneath the desk again and raised a shiny new Twigger broomstick, one of the newest out on the market. "As you can see here. We have come quite a way."
With a quick round of more candy, this time Ice Mice, Inez was ready to move on. "Our next form of transport started because of the same need that brooms came around, an object we can use to travel that would arise suspicion from the Muggles."
"Can anyone tell me what a Portkey is and what type of items are commonly used along with the spell to create one?" This one was a bit harder, she wasn't sure how many kids knew the spell or not.
Ellie's hand twitched as if she made to reach for it. Which she totally did. But...stopped herself. Because what was she going to do with a broomstick in the classroom? Maybe, though....after the lesson....they'd get to play with it on the Pitch. Just play? She promised she wouldn't steal it....
Her eyes moved from the broom to the ice mice on her desk. She grimaced. They were not anywhere near her favorite candy and most importantly, they weren't CHOCOLATE. So they would sit there. And be forgotten once they were all dismissed.
Mmm, Portkey? Ellie didn't know much about them. She didn't like them much. "They take you from one place to another instantly. Kinda like Apparition but not." Obviously. "But they're stupid gross looking stuff that Muggles wouldn't want to touch. Like rusty things and worn things." 'Things' was awfully broad but Ellie didn't care. Again, Portkeys were not fun.
And she didn't know the spell, so no comment.

Selena grinned. See, perfect answers, she knew the Department head TOTALLY agreed with her on the topic of deadly brooms - it was obvious. After all, if the department head had disagreed... she wouldn't say PERFECT answers. Yup. Selena was so normal.
She looked at the broom though. It looked... like a broom. She turned to glance at Emma to see what she had to say about it. Psht. Selena did not like brooms. They were weird. And scary. And used for chores.
ICE MICE. Selena liked the department head professor lady. A lot. Not all professors gave out sweets. Lafay had... that one term... yeah, it had been a while ago. She stuffed it in her mouth and let out a slight squeak. Cold. Yup. But good. She swallowed it and proceeded in listening to the professor speak... however, her eyes wandered from her desk... to an ice mice sitting on a Ravenclaw's desk... was the girl going to eat hers? Because Selena would totally - echem. Right.
"A portkey is an item that can transport one or more people from one place to another designated location through the means of an ordinary, everyday muggle object," Selena said, her eyes casually falling back on the Ravenclaw's desk. Ice mice... it wasn't going to run away right? "And I thinnnnk the spell is... Porty? No... uhm... Porta - WAIT. It's Portus! Right?" Selena said, turning her gaze to focus on the LESSON...
not the ice mice sitting on the 'Claw's desk... mmmhmm.

Keefer marveled at the newest Twigger model. He wasn't sure it would make the best Quidditch broom, though. It appeared to be more of a comfort broom due to the size of the handle.
He popped one of the Ice Mice candies into his mouth. As a result, he almost missed the next bit of the lesson due to the noise his chattering teeth were making.
Portkeys. He had just taken one for the first time this summer. He was visiting his aunt in Wales by himself, and his parents didn't want to use the fireplace due to the hot temperatures outside. Oh yeah, he knew all about them. Picturing the scene in his mind, complete with his father's necessary history lesson beforehand, he raised his hands. "Ma'am, Portkeys are objects that, when bewitched, transport one or more people virtually instantly to a prearranged destination." Wow, he sounded like his father. Or a textbook.
"They can be anything, really," he continued. "If the Portkey is to be left in an open area where anyone can find it, then it is best to make it something unobtrusive that a Muggle won't be tempted to touch. So an old newspaper, tin can, or similar. Otherwise, you can use anything you want, as long as it's not massive or dangerous." He imagined an Erumpent horn exploding during transport. BAD idea.
"The spell is Portus, or at least that's what my dad used when he made one this summer. All verified through the Ministry, of course!" The last thing he wanted was an inquiry. "And when it takes you, there's this weird jerk in your stomach that feels like it's pulling you forward. Everything's all a blur of color and sound, so it's best to keep your arms and legs tucked in close to your body and close your eyes." A little more than she'd asked for, but it couldn't hurt.

OHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Broomstick...
Jonathan's eyes was not letting go of what the teacher was holding. It looks really nice and he bets that most of the qudditch players, well especially the captains of the players are wanting to get their hands in one of that. It looks really nice and sophisticated.
One word. WOW!
But anyway, they suddenly moved on to the next agenda which is the lovely Portkey. Now to answer...
Jonathan raised his hand... What are Portkeys? "Portkey is one of magical transportation" that is certainly obvious enough "it helps a wizard travel to a predetermined location that he/she wants" he said. "Portkeys are known to be a simple, bland, daily object so as not to let the muggles suspect." he continued. "Portkeys are rather advantageous than the other known transport but of course no one can beat apparition" he added.
So sorry for the delay--I am back and here to stay! ;)
"Good answers everyone." Inez said happily as she listened to each student give what they knew about Portkeys. That was typically one of the more complicated forms of Magical Transport and she hadn't expected quite as much knowledge off of the top of their heads as they had with brooms.
"You all are correct in that Portkeys are muggle objects, ones that are typically discarded or wouldn't be of any interest to the Muggles anymore, that are then charmed by witches and wizards to transport them to a predetermined place."
"Most often these Portkeys are created to transport a person or group of persons at a pre-determined time as well which is why for big events such as the Quidditch World Cup, for example, Portkeys are used to help move large numbers of people from different locations around the world."
Before the department head could continue, a glance at her many handed watch showed her that she had gone way over the time she had decided to lay out for this lesson and was going to be late for a meeting back at the Ministry if she didn't wrap things up soon. "On that note, I must admit I am running a tad slow in running this lesson and my presence is needed at the Ministry in just a few minutes so I am going to go ahead and just explain to you all the basics of our third mode of transport, Floo Powder." They would be spending the entirity of their next lesson on Apparition so there was no need to ask them about that now.
"So Floo Powder may be one of the most common forms of transport and it would probably be safe to say that a majority of you all have travelled in this way." she looked around for any indication from their faces that she was drastically wrong--she didn't see any so she went on. "This is because Floo Powder has become a commercially marketed item so that Wizarding families are able to purchase it and use it safely in their homes. The fireplaces around Britain are formed into a network that my department in the Ministry regulate and repair. With just a dash of powder a person may travel to any connected, and unrestricted fireplace in the country--granted they have been invited." She added the last part because it was just common courtesy, manners matter.
"Now you all have been lovely and I have so enjoyed our lesson today and I would hope that you all have enjoyed it as well. Now you all may go ahead and enjoy the rest of your day, I will see you again soon." She then went back to her desk to retrieve her things so when the last student left she could do the same.
