Hello and welcome to my portfolio thread. Let me make very clear that all I claim to be is someone who enjoys mucking around creatively. I lay no claim to being good at anything. In fact, I'm sort of shy about sharing because it's just 'goofing around' for me, but some very lovely SSers have shown an interest and encouragement and, honestly, I can't take their bullying anymore. (Looking at you, Kath).
I'll be sharing some things I've been working on, and also some tips on how to flex creatively when you have absolutely no skill to do so.
So. Be kind, and be sure to visit often and wave at me, because I love to wave back. Lessons- Lesson 1

Hi ern
The Rublic of Congo, Costa Rica, and Cote D’Ivoire ones all look so nice together - like they belong in a set. I think it must be because of the similar colors they all have with the neutral shades ! and if you look at the blues it goes from pigmented to lighter to lightest, which is also very neato.
ALSO! I’m trying to keep the weeping at a minimum because you said it makes the colors run. i’m not good at directions, BUT I'M TRYING, SEEEEEE
re: the latest trio, It’s so cool to see how your style has changed throughout this project. Looking at the Croatia painting and then the ones below it ooooo - which style do you prefer?

HI FRIEND THANKS FOR SAVING ME FROM TRIPLE POSTING. You can weep if you want but please use a hankie, that's it. <3<3
As for the change in styles... I like the use of ink but I appreciate the control and technique needed to use paint for shading and texture. What do you like? Czech Republic, Denmark, Djibouti
Sorry about the weird lighting on these three... they're a little washed out for some reason.

That weird blob on the first one is a BOAT where the shading got away from me. Sorry about that.
And my mom keeps asking me how you get into the house in East Timor, so if you know, just ring me.

I like ALL of the things, but I especially like the shadows you did in the East Timor one and the Dominican Republic one.
I have another question !!! when you do greenery (like in East Timor, for example), do you do the ink first or the paint first?

As for greenery, I usually do put in the ink first, just to draw the general shape so I don't accidentally put down the wrong color in the wrong place. Sometimes I go back and add details in ink. Eduador, Egypt, El Salvador

I also really like East Timor Hi, friend! The pyramid picture feels so SIMPLE to me, too, especially compared to some of the complicated buildings I've tried, but I like the colors and shading so much. So that's to say that I agree with you!

The thing.
ANYWAY. YOU AND YOUR DOMES. I already mentioned that I thought I should do some sort of DOME RETROSPECTIVE at the end of this to show my progress over time. This is a nice one, I agree.
No good trees in this one, sorry. Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Estonia

Hey, friends! Thanks for bearing with me while I dump artwork in this thread. I know it's a LOT, and it means the world that I can show it to people here. I'd like to promise that it DOES get better, but it's likely only that way to me!

I find the flat on drawings are kind of BORING, so I like to find interesting/unusual angles to sketch. I mean, not THAT unusual, obviously, but more than just straight on.
Maybe they can ALL be your favorites? Yeah, they can all be your favorites. The Gambia, Georgia, Germany

I agree that the Georgia image is so remote and lovely, and the structure of the building in Ghana is SO INTERESTING.

In case you're wondering, there are FOUR Guinea variations around the whole world.

All of them are so nice though BUT those cute little FLAGS in your Guinea piece are just so cute and eye catching and ugh...such a big fan of your work and your evolution as a watercolor artist ;________;

hi ern
I fell very behind, but now I have SO MANY PRETTY PAINTINGS to look at. once again, ya girly is weeping.
OKAY i literally have no idea how you managed to work in so many details for the Germany piece, but the longer I sit here and look at it, the more details stick out. I’m blown away by this one in particular. Georgia is so sereeeeeene the way you’ve painted such a beautiful landscape makes me feel all the ways, ern. AND THE GREENERY IN THE GAMBIA ONE. I’m such a big fan of your leafy greens.
I love how vibrant and FULL the blue is for Greece and the little pink building in the Greneda one is so cute and FULL OF DETAIL. I think my favorite part of this one is the tower/arched structure in the background. The way you do perspective (is that what this is called??) is amazing. Okay wait also. I love the background colors in the Ghana painting and the little splash of red there too. Ugh. The colors just work so nicely together and the way you incorporate shadows. The level of detail is just *chefs kiss*
I don’t know what I was expecting when I opened the next three G’s but i’m so excited about all the COLOR!!! The little flags in the Guinea one and then GREEN TREEEEEEEEES in Guinea-Bissau. You add so much life to these trees. i love the trees. BUT THE GOLDEN BEAUTY OF ANTIGUA. With its vibrant blue sky and that bright red awning (okay, upon searching the word ‘awning’, I realize this is not the correct word but I’m drawing a blank) (does this qualify as a roof?) (i’m really not sure but THE COLORS).
I lied, there is one more G and it is Guyana! THE LINE details in this one have me burstin’ with excitement and actually ern. all three of these ones are such a testament to your incredible patience and work with detail. The trees in the Honduras one with the intricate details in the stone. Ugh. love.
I just opened Hungary and once again I am going to comment on how much I love your trees and bushes and GREEN things. You work so many different colors into the GREENS it makes my heart so happy. Iceland is a beautiful, cold looking place but it also looks warm and welcoming. Okay also. ;_; the Lotus Temple one makes me especially weepy. I think i’ve already yelled about this one before so I will not yell about it now. shapes are so hard and yet you excel.
OKAY THE COLORS IN THE INDONESIA ONE LOOK LIKE A BEAUTIFUL RAINBOW AND I LOVE IT. hello i am back to yelling apparently. IRAAAAAAAN. This one also makes me especially weepy. Especially the shading. The shading in the two lower domes is so beautiful ern. Iraaaaaaq. I love the arches. Please continue with all the arches and domes. i love. Ireland is so peaceful. and in conclusion, I want to roll around in all that beautiful grass. SO MUCH GREEN. I LOVE.

I don't know exactly how to respond when you look at weeks and weeks at a time. Just... please stop admiring my greenery, it is LITERALLY the least interesting part of my work. But it makes me so happy that you like the little trees.
Do I have to acknowledge everything you love? Man. I'm glad you like it when the colors are VIBRANT (although apparently that's not how you're supposed to do watercolors, which are supposed to be transparent and light but whatever) and the shadows, which I actually think are my favorite parts too. I love to go back in after I do the first round of colors and add the little dark spots and shadows and curves.
And she's talking about the green again. Quote:

It's been a while since I've been in here and I'm just impressed with how much you've done since then. I'm really impressed with your dedication in creating something so often - something I need to make more time to do myself! Anyway, I'm enjoying your around the world series. I see it on twitter too and I love these little pictures from different locations. From your most current selection - Japan is so lovely and beautiful. And I love your pen detail on all of these; it adds such a nice touch.

It's been really fun to create all these different countries and to learn more about the world. I'll have to figure out what to do next - I'm a little at odds.
Japan was WORRISOME with the curving roof line, but I like how it turned out TOO. Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kiribati
