Charms Research and Development Space [Practice Room]
Located in a spare room next to the main charms classroom is a small space that has been redecorated and repurposed by Professor Sayse as a place to research ideas for new charms. There is a bookshelf in the corner that contains books on such topics related to Introduction to Latin and Charm development (and more). If you have an idea for a new charm, this is the perfect place to plan it out and even seek advice from your resident charms expert should you desire.

It had been a long week and Marilyn only hoped that students were in need of some relaxing, yet informative activity as much as she was. It had been awhile since she de-stressed through art creativity but she could definitely use the mental break.
Already donning a smock, she sat on a stool near the front of the room as she awaited for students and/or her colleagues to arrive. Hopefully it wasn't too late on this fine Friday evening and they could spare her a little time to decompress before they headed into their weekend.
ooc: HI <3 we'll get started tomorrow evening, but please make your way in and come play with us any questions, don't hesitate to ask

The moment Mouse had seen the notice regarding some exploration through creativity I'm conjunction with Charms, she had marked her pocket calendar and made sure to put post its up to remind herself of her interest. She was by no means an amazing artist, but she certainly.liked to explore her creative side - even if it had generally presented itself through her fashion choices and created clothings. But still... Whatever medium they were using today, she was sure she'd have fun anyways.
Heading into the room, a basic white t-shirt over a pair of black leggings her selection for the day's wear, she grinned at Professor Sayse. "Hello, Professor. Very looking forward to today! Which medium do you generally choose to create in?" she found herself a spot to sit, forgoing any protective wear that might have been available or that she should have brought. The white was a conscious decision - any accidents she made during her creation could lead to something beautiful even in what she wore.
Brandon was here for three reasons: 1. He took Latin. 2. He thought the idea of inventing charms was fascinating(was this the third professor he'd bother with questions? Or the fourth?) and he wanted to explore this space. 3. It had been a long week, and he needed a break. He wasn't really an artist, but it's okay to not be the best or even very good at things. It was something his sister had said, and something that he liked to say to her when she needed to take her own advice. He'd even said it to Megan. Once, when he felt very nice. It applied here.
He showed up early, with the goal of enjoying himself, and exploring charms inventions through art (even though he didn't know what that meant). "Hello Professor." He even smiled at her, because he was in a relaxed mood and that meant smiles for everyone. Then he went to go stand by the older girl(Mouse). "Hi. Is the white on purpose? Or are you just very not-messy at art?" It was a real question. He was curious, and he liked to know things. Speaking of curiosity... "Do you know what it means to explore charms through art?"
Bella wasn't exactly an artist, but she did like to doodle in art from time to time so she had noted in her calender the day for the charms event. Maybe Professor Sayse could tell her about some charms professions while they worked? And the old language of latin that was interesting too. Entering the charms practice room the senior snakette was clad in athletic pants and an old t-shirt for the art activity with a snake pin on her chest as she waved over to their professor first with a greeting "Good evening Professor Sayse, will we paint portraits today?" Bella then headed over to sit down on one of the empty stools waving 'Hello's to Brandon and Minerva as she did so.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Jude too wasn’t much of a talent when it came to this type of art form. It wouldn’t hurt to have some fun, he had decided, which was why he had just stepped in the room. He took a moment to check out the room because this wasn’t one which he often visited. “Hi, Professor!’’ the Hufflepuff said, smiling and giving her a wave as he headed towards a particular Slytherin.
“Bells!” He was all beams as he flopped down beside her. “The most proper thing I can draw are blobs.” Jude stuck an elbow on the desk then rested his chin in his palm. This bit of reveal was to prepare Bella so that she wouldn’t laugh at his terrible artwork when she actually saw it.

Desiree was so excited for this activity! It was two of her favorite things combined: art and charms. Best idea ever! She wondered how Latin was going to fit into it, though. Were they going to invent some art-themed charm? Whatever it was, she was so up for it!
Feeling a bit Rapunzel today, she wore a purple smock over her clothes and a matching beret with a sun on the front - because a beret was a must-have for every artist! She was all smiles as she entered the charms research area. It was kind of weird but cool seeing so many people here. Usually when Desiree came here, she was all by herself. “Hello, Professor! Great way to start the weekend!” she said with a princessy wave. And no, she wasn’t kissing up; she really meant it!
Cue more waves for the other students. “Hi, Mouse! Hi, Brandon! Hi, Jude! Hi, Bella!” she greeted everyone. With the pleasantries out of the way, she moved aside, standing near Mouse and Brandon. Would the older girl catch the Disney reference in her outfit?

Unlike the majority of her peers, Mitsuki slinked into the practice room with quiet eagerness for today's activity. Not only did she take both Latin and Art, but watercolor painting and calligraphy were among the few things to capture her attention and her thoughts remarkably not wander elsewhere. The Ravenclaw had no aversion to messes while painting either and had refined her cleaning routine out of necessity thanks to all her tireless hours of performance calligraphy practice. One had to when half of your hakama was white and the ink to the massive brushes a rich midnight black color. She was a champion in the field now, having earned second place at the Japanese nationals over the summer, though she did not expect her peers to know these things and highly doubted that her sister, Mercer, or Yumeki-senpai would have boasted such information to anyone else.
Mostly today the Ravenclaw was hoping to learn something that she could apply to her already well refined art style and, at best, throw into her performance calligraphy routine for nationals the next summer.
Adorned in her usual dark Lolita inspired attire, complete with high knee socks, Mitsuki gravitated towards Brandon Fox but elected not to interrupt his interactions. It was more in her nature to make quiet appearances than announce them, after all. Her eyes looked around the space before falling on the Charms professor and noted the smock which was something she had not personally worn since kindergarten. She felt it unnecessary for herself and, hopefully, it would not become a requirement.
She felt too detached from the essence of her art materials with such a cloth barrier.

It didn't take too long before the first person arrived. Although the nice thing about art was that it could generally be a solitary activity which meant there wasn't need for many people. Actually Marilyn found it more relaxing and rejuvenating by herself anyway. "Good evening, Minerva! My preferred would actually be sewing but painting is a top choice as well. There's something about watching the way the colours mix together and then changing the blank canvas into something extraordinary."

"hello Brandon," Marilyn greeted, grateful that even the younger students were getting involved. Was the question directed at her or Minerva? She decided it was directed at the ravenclaw girl and decided to pass on answering that. Besides they would be learning what that meant soon enough.

Another older student. She smiled at Bella's appearance to the practice room and shook her head at her question. "No portraits today. Well, not directly." She more dabbled in photography instead of painting people anyway. Although she supposed if the mood struck for them to paint a portrait, she wouldn't object but that wasn't the goal for today's artwork.

"Good evening Jude," she greeted the hufflepuff seventh year, smiling when she overheard him telling Bella about how he could only draw blobs. She wasn't one to interrupt conversations, particularly as this wasn't a proper lesson anyway... but if he asked about it, she'd likely inform him that blobs are artwork too.

Desiree attending tonight wasn't really a surprise. Also the beret made her look like a proper artist! "Evening Desiree, love the beret. I sure hope it will be a good start to the weekend." Nothing terribly stressful. Just low-key making some art.

She felt too detached from the essence of her art materials with such a cloth barrier.
Mitsuki's attire also struck her as very artist-like. Even if it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. She greeted the fourth year promptly and decided they should probably get started.
Marilyn closed the door after Mitsuki's arrival, but still left it open ajar ... This wasn't a formal class, so if anyone was arriving late, there would be no penalty. Just like if anyone had to leave early, that was fine too. She didn't want to keep anyone from enjoying a splendid Friday night, but also knew the empowerment and enrichment that came with simply creating.
"Okay, let's get started... So there's some common prefixes and suffixes for many charm spells that are clearly Latin based. The first thing to think about in regards to charms is what spells are already existence. For example, the mobilicorpus charm has two clear Latin words. Mobil for movement. Corpus for body. Moves the body. So think about some charms you already know and let's break those down to their Latin roots?"
She wrote on the board for them:
Charms and their Latin Roots
~ Mobilicorpus: Mobil. Corpus

She smiled widely at the younger student, a Hufflepuff in her new sister's year if she recalled correctly, moving over a touch to make more space for him as he came her direction. "Bonjour!" She greeted, glancing down at her attire and giving a small chuckle. "I'm incredibly messy. The white was on purpose. Who said I couldn't multitask and potentially make two pieces at once?" She leaned over a bit to hear his question asked in a quieter tone, hiding a giggle behind her hand as she whispered back. "I haven't the faintest idea. But I like art so I'm looking forward to seeing what it means."
Greetings were offered to all the others who then followed into the room, a smile towards the seventh year Slytherin, Bella she believed which was only then confirmed when Jude came in and confirmed the name. He got a smile as well, and then came Desiree who Mouse immediately clocked her outfit. Desiree was someone she could sense was very much a kindred spirit and she made a point of noticing when she came in the room, because her outfits usually also had tinges of Disney inspo and she loved to see it. "Hello, Rapunzel!" She greeted with a wide smile, pointing at her own head to indicate Desiree's beret. "I love the whole look, but your hat is my favorite!" Was there anything more joyful than the deep purple and golden sun combo from Tangled? Mitsuki got a smile at her entrance as well.
Hearing Professor Sayse's favorite medium was also cloth came as a surprise, which probably registered on her face, but she quickly changed it to her usual smile. "Me too!" Although painting might not be her second favorite, as she usually preferred pencil to paper. But... still. Anyways, they were started! And she wondered if perhaps they would be doodling and painting different interpretations of the Latin base words given the discussion but perhaps it was too soon to draw conclusions. So instead, she focused on the current task at hand. "There's alarte ascendere.Alarte in latin is 'winged' and ascendere is 'to ascend'."
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
“Hi back at you, Desiree!” Jude grinned in the direction of his Housemate. He didn’t have much to say at the moment because his mind was on other things, and wasn’t sure how this would translate to his participation in today’s meeting here. He did catch Mouse’s smile and sent one back her way. With the professor getting things started, Jude attempted to put as much attention on her as possible.
Oh! Interesting!
The Hufflepuff straightened up, thinking back to what he knew about this sort of thing. “There’s Carpe Retractum. Carpe means ‘seize’ while Retractum means ‘withdraw’."That was literally seizing the object then moving it away from where it rested.

Raj was really hoping that because the creative charms thingy wasn’t a class per say, that he wasn’t going to get in trouble. He was really going to have to make sure to set timers when he was deep into studying from now on else it could be bad next time. The seventh year twisted to slip through the cracked open door as quietly as he could manage to see that thankfully it seemed like they had just gotten into things so he hadn’t missed much. Listening to what both Mouse and Jude had said as he discretely shifted closer to stand near the former, he was figuring they were talking about spells and their Latin.
Having been studying defense before the rush to get here, Rajesh picked the first one that came to mind. “There’s Expelliarmus...from the Latin expello for banish and armus for weapon.” A basic spell that did or was meant to do exactly what the Latin said, to banish your opponent’s weapon/wand from their person.
"Hi Desiree!" Bella waved back in greeting to the younger badger before focusing on Jude that had flopped down on the seat beside her. "Hi Judes!" she beamed back in greeting to her friend itching to elbow him in the side playfully but decided not to. When Jude revealed that he could only draw blobs Bella said understandinly "It's all right Jude, I'm not an expert drawer/painter either. We can help each other out with whatever activity Prof Sayse has planned for us if you want?"
While she waited for an answer the activity/lesson got underway. Raising her hand she offered up a latin spell she knew of and its meaning to be added to the list. "There is Aqua Eructo. Aqua is latin for water and Eructo is latin for erupt."
Brandon thought that Mouse reminded him of his sister, with her idea of getting her clothes 'artistic'. He supposed it would look quite pretty, although he didn't really get why anyone would ruin a perfectly good white outfit. But artists were just like that sometimes, and he liked artists.
He smiled at the question about Latin spell roots- actually, he didn't smile at all, or make any face. He had a complicated relationship with Latin lessons. But he at least felt like he was prepared to answer, which made him smile on the inside a little. He liked being prepared. "Protego Maxima is straightforward. 'Protego' is Latin for I protect and then 'Maxima' is the greatest of something. So you're protecting as much as possible." He knew that spell had been used on Hogwarts during the second wizarding war. He thought about the wars, and it made him sad. He didn't show it though, he was just quiet.
Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll
Desiree positively beamed when Professor Sayse complimented her beret. “Thank you, Professor!” she replied with a smile and a slight tip of her hat. Cue another smile and hat tip for Mouse. Somehow she had a feeling the older girl would get the meaning behind her outfit. “Thanks!” she replied. “I made it myself. If you like, I can teach you sometime.” Sometime later, of course! This was Professor Sayse’s activity, and it would be rude to step on her toes!
She listened intently as the professor started speaking, though she didn’t understand how Latin fit in to art. Hmm, not where she thought this was going, but still interesting! She thought for a minute, trying to come up with a Latin-based spell that hadn’t been said yet. How about the sunlight charm, Lumos Solem? That was a fun spell! “There’s Lumos Solem,” she said. “It comes from the Latin words lumen, which means “light”, and solis, which means “of the sun”.”

Standing silently behind Brandon Fox, Mitsuki folded her hands one over the other across her stomach and settled in to simply listen though it did not mean she was not also thinking. Namely she was searching her knowledge for an example that correlated with the apparent theme of today's activity[, which did not take too long to settle on a bit of Latin that was applicable to several charms in her personal artistic arsenal. So it was that, after a bit of listening, Mitsuki raised her hand to offer up further suggestion.
"There are numerous charms that have incantations that are derived from the Latin word colōrem. Such spells include Colorus Fulgeo, Colorus Revolvo, and Colovaria. Colorus Fulgeo creates a flashing effect between colors as is indicated by the Latin for to flash or to blaze. Revolvo, the Latin for to revolve or unroll, creates a spell that has colors to shift between colors in a less dramatic fashion. Colovaria is the combination of colōrem and variāre, Latin words for color and vary respectively, and it a spell to modify the color of an object without any additional color shifting like the other two charms I mentioned."
Perhaps the most Mitsuki had ever spoken in class but it was in the sweet spot of her interests. Art was a means of self expression, after all.

Perhaps they needed to start a knitting club at Hogwarts. She'd have at least one member, from the sounds of it. Even though she was the professor, that was something she really didn't know in regards to what it took to start a club?
"Ah yes... excellent." She added that to the board.

"Yes this is one example of a straight forward charm that quite literally translates." Marilyn nodded at Jude, as she added that one to the board as well.

This was an example of one instance that yes Raj was correct. He wouldn't be getting into trouble about slipping in late since it wasn't really a true lesson. Also the fact that he was super respectful when he slipped in quietly was definitely noted and perhaps credited to the fact that he was a seventh year.
"Excellent, yes," Marilyn said, adding Expelliarmus to the board as well.

Which Lumos is another charm that has multiple incantations associated with it that you can add various words to change or redirect the meaning." It was probably one of the easier charms to try and create something 'new' with, by adding a different Latin word to the ending.

It wasn't all to surprising that Mitsuki brought up several charms associated with Colorus. "Excellent and very thorough descriptions of three variations on the Colorus charm" Marilyn praised the young Ravenclaw.
Once it seemed as if everyone had the chance to speak up if they wanted, Marilyn figured it was time to move on with the activity. "Excellent. Seems as if you all have a good grasp of some of the Latin roots associated with Charms. So there's two main options for tonight's activity, depending on what you feel best suits your strengths. You may do both if you wish."
"So first, take one of the charms or latin words listed, or if you want to use a latin word NOT listed, that's okay too... I've just provided some of the more common words. But taking one or more of these words and translate into artwork. Whatever you feel represents the word 'carpe', for example. There's no wrong answer. It's just your artistic interpretation of the word or charm. Be as abstract or detailed as you like."
"The second option is to use the list of latin roots provided and brainstorm other ideas for charms. Such as ...Would Lumos Glacio work to freeze light? What combinations can you create and why they may or may not be effective?"
Charms and their Latin Roots
~ Mobilicorpus: Mobil = movement. Corpus = body
~ Alarte ascendere. Alarte = winged. ascendere = to ascend
~ Carpe Retractum. Carpe = seize. Retractum = withdraw
~ Expelliarmus. expello = banish . armus = weapon
~ Aqua Eructo. Aqua = water. Eructo = erupt.
~ Protego Maxima. Protego = protect. Maxima = maximum strength
~ Lumos Solem. Lumen = light. Solis = of the sun
~ Many spells derived from Colōrem (e.g. Colorus Fulgeo, Colorus Revolvo, and Colovaria) Fulgeo = flashing or blazing. Revolvo = Revolve or unroll, will create a spell that shifts between colours. Colorvaria combines colōrem and variāre, to modify the colour of an object without any additional colour shifting
Various Latin words
~ Mobil = motion/movement
~ Levio = Levitate
~ Lacero = cut
~ Ligo = bind
~ Glacio = freeze
~ Cresco = Grow
~ Resilio = Shrink
~ Lignum = wood
~ Vitrum = glass
~ Bibius = paper/parchment
~ Liquidum = liquid
~ Duo = Double Strength
~ Trio = Triple Strength
~ Maxima = maximum strength
~ Sempra = forever
~ Totalum = total
ooc: Note for option one, you can use a graphics program... or even hand-draw something and upload it that way. Or if you don't want to / can't draw, but your character draws, feel free to be descriptive with what your character draws. No actual images are required!! Questions allowed. Most importantly have fun, go crazy!! <3 You're also not limited to the words/charms provided on the list

Had Bella elbowed him, he was going to elbow her right back because that was the type of friendship they shared; the Snake and the Badger were super comfortable with each other. Not to mention they always had each other's backs. “We can do that!’’ They made a great team anyway.
Interesting answers were shared by those gathered and Jude couldn’t help but marvel at all the spells he took for granted and their literal meanings. As for the activities… they were both great options and not being artistically inclined would make one think that he would shy away from that option, right? Wrong! This Puffer was never afraid to try things he wasn’t good at. He even had an idea about what he wanted to do. His chosen spell? Aqua Eructo.
Did he want to paint or use markers, coloured pencils or what?
“Think I’m going to do a bit of drawing,” Jude informed Bella after a moment of thought. So pencils and all that jazz. That meant he was about to gather his materials. “How about you, Bells?”
Oooh, Desiree had MADE her own hat? That was one area in which Mouse had yet to master - or even begin to really get good enough to comfortably call herself a newbie. So the offer to teach her was met with an excited nod and a grin, "Oh I would love that, if you wouldn't mind!" It'd be fun to hang out with the girl as well, she was sure.
The sixth year noticed Raj's entrance and sent a smile his direction, before shifting over slightly to make more room for him when it seemed he was coming that direction. Her head shifted again as well to smile at the younger year on her other side, giving a small thumbs up as well at his answer. She watched as the list on the board grew and once instructions were given, she found she was quite excited by the project of the evening. Lumos was one that got her attention and she decided quickly that's what she would play around with. A concept was already forming too, which she would need a pencil for the beginning sketch - and thankfully she had one in her bag which she now reached for, attention turning to the others for a moment. "Any ideas what you guys will do?" she asked, as a hand holding her pencil came out triumphantly from the bag.
Brandon was not an artist. Well, at least he had never been told he was an artist. Except for by his sister, who was under the impression that everyone was an artist and therefore didn't count. But he didn't really want to come up with his own spells, at least not out loud. He did have a few spells he'd thought could be modified for a healing purpose... but that was all just in his imagination so far. He decided to stick to the first option, which seemed like he'd be okay at.
He started with protego maxima, his answer to the previous question. So... protego meant to protect. It was a physical shield. But Brandon was thinking along a somewhat different line as he drew what he thought 'maximum protection' looked like. He drew a rough version of himself, obvious by the blond hair and neat clothes. Then there were more not-very-well-drawn-but-looked-like-people people- a sad girl with long, dark hair, a tired woman, a little kid clinging to her leg, Xander and Evy (his best friends), a ghost woman who looked like him, his cat, and his dog. All of them were surrounding him, some with hugs, and some of them were chasing away streaks of blue and purple. That's what Brandon thought Maximum Protection was. It looked a lot better in his head... still, he wrote PROTEGO MAXIMA underneath it and then Brandon Fox. There, it was done.
But now he was inspired to create more, and felt his mind wander to healing spells, his main interest. Vulnera Sanentur was a good example of a spell with strong Latin roots. May the wounds be healed, or wounds are healed, or something along those lines. Wound healing. And the spell should be cast three times. First, he drew a big box of band-aids. BAND-AID, they were labeled. Next there was a little healing kit, with bruise cream and scar cream and bandages. Then there was a blood-replenishing potion and bandages and a bed. His thought behind it was that there were three or so types of physical wounds that needed to be healed: little ones, medium ones, and REALLY BIG SCARY ONES. And when casting vulnera sanentur, the three castings were to save someone from dying, clean and repair the wounds, and properly repair the wounds. He figured for a smaller (but still medium at least, it was a strong spell for the scariest injuries) injury, the spell probably wouldn't need as many castings. VULNERA SANENTUR. Brandon Fox.
Brandon was more than a little obsessed with healing, so he then thought about more healing spells he knew of. But then he saw mobilicorpus and the next thing he knew, he was drawing that. And the next thing he knew after that, he had more than a few drawings amassed in from of him and he didn't quite remember making this many!!! He didn't think they were very good and this was very tiring. But he didn't feel bad about making them, so he just kept drawing and drifting off into his own little undisturbed world.

With his materials gathered, Jude got to work. This was a nice way to distract him from his thoughts. It actually worked like a charm given how focused he was being just so that his artwork could at least look the slightest presentable. Just exactly what was his idea? Well, since ‘Eructo’ meant ‘erupt’, the first thing that came to mind was a volcano. His volcano would not have ash and magma. That’s right. It was a water volcano, even though there may be no such thing in real life.
Jude started off with two lines, moving his pencil from the bottom corners of the page up until he was halfway across it. The lines didn’t meet then; not until he drew in a huge circle which serves as the crater, that is. The circle is what linked the two. Okay, so things seemed to be going smoothly thus far. It was a really simple drawing so there shouldn’t be too much trouble for him, right? And his intended volcano DID look like one, albeit being a little lopsided to the right.

Marilyn walked around for a bit observing Jude, Minerva, Brandon all get started.... It seemed Brandon wasn't wasting much time at all in getting started.
"Excellent job tonight. When it comes to creating, it's not necessarily about perfection but sometimes it's just about getting the ideas out on the paper. You can always enhance and fine tune later." Just figured she would put that out there because sometimes one needed the reminders and encouragement. Not that she wanted to encourage them to fail, but to say that it was OKAY to fail and sometimes necessary in order to truly succeed.
"You may stay as long as you wish. Or come back and use this space whenever you feel creativity bursts or if you just need a quiet space that's not the library."
ooc: thanks for participating here, officially drawing this group thing to close but the thread will remain open for new/continued RPs <3
