Default Charms: Lost & Found

It was the beginning of November. The skies were clouded and the breeze was cool, it was a neutral temperature. A light jumper was good enough to handle the breeze. Meeting out on the grounds, there was a good view of the garden and duck pond from here. As for Professor Feirgrund? He was standing near the Hut, where the canopy housed the blackboard, some seats, and a closed box on the table. Was this another lecture day? It appeared so, but the surroundings suggested otherwise.

Where are we at?

Q1 - Greetings + First question.
A1 - Replies + First practice.
A2 - Continue practice + Finding Lost Item

OOC: Welcome! Class has already begun, but you can jump right in posting as if they were here all along. While this is the first RP class, IC-wise there have been many beforehand. Be sure to check the rules & canon info if not familiar before settling in.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Ary - being the outdoorsy type person that he was - loved it when lessons were kept there. Perhaps that was why he was one of the students who arrived super early at the spot which Feirgrund had designated for the lesson. It hit him almost immediately that the Groundskeeper Hut was right there and a sudden thought made him snigger - a thought which he would need to remember to pass on to Jan.

Catching the professor's eyes, he gave him the usual wiggle-wave greeting though this time there was a slightly mischievous grin in place because Ary could not revert his expression into a serious one. But, oh look! Treasure, maybe? Hmm... what a way to keep the students intrigued, professor. Those were his new thoughts as he went off to find a seat.

Greer would never understand the professors of the school love for being outside. Inside was warm and safe .. outside .. well Merlin knew what it would be. But none the less here she was ready for another charms less .. despite it being outside, she would go into like any other lesson. Ready to learn.

She smiled at the professor gave a slight wave, and took a seat getting out her parchment and quills. Eager as also to begin.

Bathes in Maple Syrup | Dancing Lobster | Mrs. Charlie Weasley | Seneca's Beard | That's So Fetch

A light jumper was just right for this November day, and he felt invigorated as he approached the designated spot. Beauden arrived on the grounds with his usual laid-back stride, rolling his shoulders to loosen up as he scanned the setup. He took a moment to appreciate the fresh air and the view of the garden and duck pond. The charm of the outdoors made him feel alive, and he liked that Feirgrund had chosen this setting; anything was better than the stuffy classroom walls.

When Beauden took in the sight of the professor standing near the hut, flanked by a blackboard and a table, his curiosity flared. What caught his eye was the closed box resting on the table. "What's in there, sir?" he asked, even though he didn't expect to receive a direct answer. He knew the adults liked building some suspense before revealing a lesson's true focus. Still, Beauden wanted to let the man know that whatever was hidden in the box had his attention.

Resisting the urge to give the box a few taps to see if anything would happen, he found himself a spot to sit. Maybe today's the day we charm the ducks, he thought half-jokingly with a small grin as he stretched his legs out. The breeze ruffled his hair, and he tilted his head back slightly, enjoying the sensation.

Being out in the grounds was becoming something of a habit for the fourth year Slytherin, although today, the sky was a little lighter than the last time she’d wandered the path down into the grounds.

Once down by the hut, Sloane wandered over to the canopy and seats and took one, not really looking who she was sitting near or looking at anything particular. Ignoring the professor and the weird box that was sitting on the table, Sloane pulled out some parchment and a quill and sat ready for yet another lecture.

It was a great convenience that Anna had already been out on the grounds doing some cloud watching when she remembered that she had a Charms lesson out on the grounds today as well. Realizing she had no time to scamper back to her common room for her things, she clutched the strap of her bag (a bag which contained her wand and enough wild flowers to make at least five decently sized bouquets or three flower crowns) and hoped that her wand would be enough to get her through whatever the topic of today would be.

So it was that the Hufflepuffle arrived, slightly winded, and offered the professor a bright smile and wave AND was also reminded that she owed him another check in AND update with the latest from the Department of Mysteries. She wasn't so sure that her journal would be enough to keep track of all her to-do's anymore. Weaving around the other students, she smiled a bit more when she spotted a certain Gryffindor who had henceforth been known as Lake Prince Splish-Splash with the Radiant Halo. "I proooooooomise I don't have any stones with me today," she laughed as she plopped herself beside him and hugged her bag to her chest.

Sydney had no preference at all for indoor vs outdoor lessons. Either one had the potential to be chaotic informative, depending on the structure and subject. As such, her expression was as stoic as ever as she made her way to the hut, showing neither excitement nor trepidation.

Upon arrival, her grayish-blue eyes immediately landed on the box, and her thoughts turned to the Box-Blasting Spell from last term. Was this going to be a revision on that spell? Merlin, she hoped not! As much as she liked the Box-Blasting Spell, she'd done it a hundred times. She wanted to try something new!

”Hello, Professor Feirgrund,” she greeted, nodding politely in acknowledgement. She took a seat near the middle, close enough to get a good look at the box but far enough away that she wouldn't seem overeager. As she waited for the lesson to begin, her eyes kept flicking toward that box. What was inside?

Yeahhh, Mr White! Yeah science!

Ezra had forgotten that they were meeting for class outside today and he was half way towards the Charms classroom when his brain very abruptly got into gear. He had to sprint through the corridors and down the halls to make sure he arrived on time. Luckily, the fifth year was a good runner, and by the time he burst out the doors and in into the grounds, he had made up for any lost time.

He straightened his clothes and took a second or two to catch his breath before sauntering his way over to the makeshift classroom. Cool as a cucumber. Yep. “Hi Professor.” He greeted Feirgrund, jovial as ever despite the impromptu exercise.

He absently made his way to a seat, not noticing the box until he sat. Interesting. And why were they outside today? The Hogwarts staff really liked to keep you guessing huh?

Feirgrund smiled and returned the wave, and yes, he did catch that not-so-subtle change in their expression. But after all their previous discussions, was he surprised? Nope. It was nice to see Master Atreyu-Rehman arrive early.

Some students weren't all that social, and it was okay. Feirgrund thought that kids and teenagers shouldn't feel pressured to interact when uncomfortable unless necessary.

"Hello Master Greenwood," Feirgrund greeted. It was nice seeing students arrive promptly. So why make them wait any longer?

Eventually, it came time for the lesson to begin. Feirgrund waited as the last set of students arrived before he faced everyone seated.

"Good day, everyone," He addressed the class once the chatter died away. "Now, I know there's a blackboard here, but the lecture and note-taking will be short. This will be ran similar to our Box-Blasting Charm lesson but instead of opening sealed cases we'll be focusing our surroundings. As for this box? You'll be carrying the contents with you on the activity." Whether that relieved or disappointed some students to hear, lessons were lessons. "But first, one at time, share a time that you felt like you were being watched or perhaps needed to find something you lost? How did you handle that?" There were no wrong answers or reactions here.. within reason.

OOC: Welcome, everyone! You can react/answer to either questions depending on your character's background. Class has started now so any new posters can post acting as if they were here all along without IC consequences for late arrival. The next post will be around 24 hours from now.

Thank Merlin for a short note taking session!

This Slytherin was more into practical aspects of lessons, especially as the lesson was being held outside. In any case, Ary was already intrigued to learn a few tidbits about the activity. Too bad there would be more waiting time to find out the full details.

As for the questions, Ary mulled them over silently. They were seemingly unrelated; at least he couldn’t figure out any way just yet a manner in which they were linked. He decided to focus on the second one so a hand was raised. “I did lose something important while at home but since I couldn’t use magic… well, I spent a great deal of the morning retracing my steps with the hope of finding it. The entire process was a painstaking one since it involved wasting so much time.” Sure, he could have asked for help but he wasn’t the type to bother anyone, especially not his busy family members who were either involved in their own activities or the Reserve.

Okay, their surroundings. The garden…the duck pond…their fellow students and the box that contained something that they could each carry. All and all a nice day despite the breeze that liked to play with the tips of her hair that she had kept mostly loose if pulled back. Nadia returned her full attention to Professor Feirgrund at the questions raised to the class, the sixth year trying to think of her example even as her brother spoke up with one of his own.

“At home, feeling like I’m being watched is a common occurrence.” And no, not feeling like one of the adults was keeping an eye out. “Sometimes its real, like you’ve caught the attention of one of the creatures in their enclosures…sometimes I’m imagining it like its reminding me to pay attention to my surroundings.” Though she would swear that she knew the cliffs like the back of her hand since she was 7.

Yeahhh, Mr White! Yeah science!

Ezra wasn't the most organised of people. He lost things on a daily basis – putting them down and them then seemingly vanishing into thin air, then pulling everything apart looking, only to find them in the very place he had left them – the first place he always looked! He blamed those.. what was that movie he had watched with his great uncle Nathan again?--GREMLINS. Yes. Those creepy little blighters from that entertaining movie. Accio was always handy too in school.

He didn't feel like he wanted to voice this in class—it happened too often to be a fun little anecdote for him. The feeling of being watched, too, was familiar to the boy. Ezra had turned out a little.. different from many of his family members. He was the first Ravenclaw on his dad's side for a start, and he didn't show any interest in the close families career paths – a business he was expected to take over at some point in the future. As a result, he often felt like he was being watched at home – considered and scrutinised. He wrinkled his nose thinking about it. But again, not something to voice in class. Or anywhere to be frank.

He pondered over the subject while listening to his classmates. “The paintings in this place are always watching us.” He offered. Not a paranoid feeling like he was sure the Professor meant, but a fact. “I guess just turn them around.” He smiled slightly, amused by the idea of this and the protests from beyond the frames that would ensue.

Greer wasn't sure she liked the note taking to be short, especially with an outside lesson, that more to get to the elements of the world quicker, ugh. Still, here they were. "I think we are watched constanly. People watching is a real thing, espeically students at a school for magic, we are always being watched, making sure we aren't breaking rules. But if you're following them, no need to concered about who's watching. Greer, didn't break rules, so it was of no bother to her.

Well...wasn't this first inquiry just entirely too on the nose and Anna suddenly felt a lot smaller than she already was and her fingers were playing with one another and almost begging for a hangnail to fiddle with. She could always mess with the broken remembrall in her pocket but even that had lost some of its appeal since summer. How did you pick one instance out of a life built on the very essence of the search only to be greeted by thick silence at every turn? The way she dealt with all that was walking through bookshops and libraries where the very spirits of the stories contained within were urging her forward to find what she had lost and that which remained hidden from her ... but the more she tried to find the answers the more elaborate her stories and fantasies became to fill the void of disappointment when she found none.

Until this summer, that is.

Anna had never really been bothered by the thought of being watched, or perhaps it was less that she had never considered it, but when it came to losing things and looking for them...well...there was more of a mantra of acceptance she had convinced herself to be true or else crumble. Where it was BIG things like memories of her faceless father who had become more concept than human over the years or textbooks, Anna had done what she could to adopt a what will be will be persona about it all. "Well...things we lose have a way of coming back eventually ... just maybe not always in the way we expect...and until then it is an opportunity for some creative improvisation."

"Without magic, it is challenging to find something that's gone missing." Feirgrund nodded. Sometimes they end up turning up when you least expect it.

It was interesting experience as Feirgrund listened. "Often, your body senses something before your eyes can notice it." Sometimes it's overly cautious, but never wrong to completely ignore. "There's a balance on when to be aware and making sure it doesn't impact your own behavior."

A tiny hit of a smirk may have emerged on Feirgrund's face. "They do like to observe their outside surroundings." It was merely the turn them over as a solution that hit the amusement scale. "That is one way to deal with it." Nodding. He personally preferred using the blackout charm, but that would be worth another lesson.

How did you pick one instance out of a life built on the very essence of the search only to be greeted by thick silence at every turn? Until this summer, that is.

Anna had never really been bothered by the thought of being watched, or perhaps it was less that she had never considered it, but when it came to losing things and looking for them...well...there was more of a mantra of acceptance she had convinced herself to be true or else crumble. "This is true, Miss Walles." Nodding, "Muggles in particular have this thought with crafty items such as scissors or markers being lost and turning up when you no longer need them."

After enough responses, it was time to move on. Feirgrund gave the board a few taps, to reveal the information.

Wand Incantation/Movement: Obiectum Revelio - Shape of a triangle
"Now you've already had a lesson on the Human-Presence Charm. Today we'll be working on a variation of the charm. This charm in particular will reveal objects, often as a great aspect for revealing something you had lost." For those curious on the intention of the charm. "While there are many charms that reveal hidden lost objects, this one in particular has a focus with familiar items. Some that you'll be searching for." Almost like a treasure hunt, but without a box to unlock. "In this box are pouches that will each have photographs of items lost within this area. Without the image in your mind, the charm won't be able to spot the item, preventing thieves from taking advantage of the situation."

Now then, "But first, we must practice the incantation, Obiectum Revelio. Pronounced as Oh-Bee-Ek-Tum. Reh-VEH-lee-oh." Waiting until the class repeated the pronunciation. "Excellent, continue pronouncing it. NEWT students, you will practice it both audibly and wordlessly."

As for the wand work, "For the wand movement, it's fairly simple. You will be tracing the shape of a triangle . While you can trace the shape from either direction, starting from the top is the simplest. You will know the casting is correct when a glowing white trail appears and follow your wand movement as you trace it to completion. If successful, the white triangle shape will stay for a few seconds before fading. If unsuccessful, it'll fade before the shape is complete." As Feirgrund explained he demonstrated the instructions. "For now, try to focus on at least having a while trail appear before we get to finding the objects." As there would be more instructions on that.

OOC: Great responses everyone! Now you'll be practicing the wand movement and the Box-blasting charm. The main activity will continue with further instructions 48 hours from now. If you have any questions feel to ask.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Now it all made sense about that box being on display. And as Ary made his notes, he couldn’t help but think how useful the spell would be, especially when he became of age and lost something at home - or somewhere that wasn’t school. Not to mention, it helped that one’s lost belongings couldn’t easily be taken by anyone.

With note-taking completed now, the fourth year was quite ready for practise. “Oh-Bee-Ek-Tum. Reh-VEH-lee-oh,’’ he repeated after Feirgrund before tracing out the triangle shape. The combination was fairly easy in his opinion. Once the students were left to continue practise on their own, he continued with the incantation on his own since Jan was working with Idris and his other friends seemed occupied with the task given to them. “Oh-Bee-Ek-Tum. Reh-VEH-lee-oh. Oh-Bee-Ek-Tum. Reh-VEH-lee-oh. Obiectum ReVElio. Obiectum ReVElio.’’

And now, with the practise of the incantation and wand movement completed separately, it was time to pair them up. “Obiectum ReVElio.” Ary was unsurprised when nothing happened on the first try; even though Charms was one of his stronger subjects, he still had to work a little extra sometimes to get the proper results. For that reason, the practise continued.

A free item? That piqued his interest even more, though he wasn't the type to get overly excited about mystery boxes. Whatever it was, he hoped it was useful—or at least fun.

The Gryffindor grinned at the sight of the winded Hufflepuff who had taken a seat beside him. Her words resulted in him chuckling. "Thank Merlin!" he commented, moving a hand across his forehead to express feigned relief. "Don't think I'd be able to dodge them as easily with these legs I magicked this morning. Still getting used to them." A wink was sent her way, still willing to go along with her illusion that he was actually a merprince.

Beauden leaned back slightly, his arms crossed loosely as he listened to Professor Feirgrund. When they were asked to share a moment where they felt like they were being watched or had to find something lost, Beauden's brow furrowed slightly. That wasn't the sort of question he expected in a Charms class, and for a moment, he considered brushing it off with a joke. But then he remembered a time from the dragon reserve back home.

Such a tale involving how he had lost one of his boots while exploring the mountainside. He never did find his boot, but one of the younger dragons had been watching him the whole time according to Pa, who had scolding him for going out on his own. But those details ended up not being shared, however, as he quickly found himself getting caught up in everyone else's stories. He completely agreed with those that mentioned they were constantly under watch at school; there were eyes everywhere.

He focused on the shared incantation, rolling the words around in his mouth as they echoed around him. "Oh-Bee-Ek-Tum. Reh-VEH-lee-oh." The pronunciation felt a bit funny at first, but the more he repeated it, the more it began to flow.

Once he felt the rhythm of the incantation settling in, he began tracing the triangle shape in the air, starting from the top as instructed. Wand gripped firmly, he concentrated on completing the movement. The triangle wasn't the straightest, but it was a triangle nonetheless. A white trail flickered in the air, and his heart raced as he watched it stay briefly before fading away. Not quite what he wanted, but at least he managed to get a glimmer.

Beauden narrowed his eyes, feeling more determined after that flicker of success. He repeated the incantation, this time putting more intention behind each syllable and was more deliberate in making the lines sharper. The white trail appeared once more, but instead of fading as quickly, it lingered a fraction longer, the edges more defined than before. Progress!

Now was he ready to try it nonverbally? Maybe later. He honestly wasn't feeling up to melting his brain and making his face turn red from an overabundance of concentration today.

Greer realized maybe she didn't fully elborate on her response and frowned a bit. She didn't like not having the full correct answer. Wasn't that just like a Ravenclaw. But the lesson moves on, no time to dwell on the previous answer. It was time to start practing todays charm.
"Oh-Bee-Ek-Tum. Reh-VEH-lee-oh"
"Oh-Bee-Ek-Tum. Reh-VEH-lee-oh"
"Oh-Bee-Ek-Tum. Reh-VEH-lee-oh"

She said it out loud several times, then began to trace the triangle. That was simple enough. Greer put it all together, starting at the top "Obiectum Revelio" she said, the white triangle appeared but faded immediatley. Well at least she was on the right track. Practice makes perfect. And she was not afraid of practice.

While students practiced, Professor Feirgrund did go around and gave approving nods to each person attempting. Whether successful or not, the effort was appreciated. After some time had passed, a few students managed to be successful with the charm. Others were still working on it but making excellent progress. It was eventually time for the activity.

"Excellent work everyone. Take a pause and come on up to retrieve what's in this box here." As Feirgrund opened the box, they could see minature moleskin handbags. "Inside each pouch you'll find some photographs with the lost items and on the back of each photo is a clue on its location. This is to help you know where to attempt the Charm. Do not worry if you're still mastering the charm, sometimes a little motivation helps. If you manage to find the item, you're free to keep it! Otherwise, you'll still get full credit for your attempts." Nothing like a little prize unless they didn't like said items. As for how they'll be able to find the item with the charm. "As before, you will make the incantation and wand movement in the area where your clue is stated. If you're in the right area, the white triangle will change shape to match said item. That'll be your cue to search and nab the item. Otherwise, it'll remain a triangle shape and fade like usual. You're free to work alone or with another person."

Before adding one important factor, "There is also a charm to prevent you from wandering too far for the duration of the lesson. So you won't be lost looking for it." That way no student will accidentally end up in the Forbidden Forest or elsewhere. Merlin knows what could be found in there. "When you're ready, begin!"

OOC: You all are doing amazing! As mentioned, you can grab a mini bag and begin hunting using the Lost Object Charm. For the photograph and clue, the objects and location are randomized. But there's no limit to how many spins you give it if there's the desired item you wish to RP for. Otherwise, you can also choose to practice without hunting. There will be at least 72 hours to complete this. Any questions, feel free to ask/vm/pm.

Don’t ask where Aurora had come from or how she had managed to quietly slip her way into the lesson unnoticed before it had started but she was here and on time just and was attempting to listen from the back whilst having to stretch up high to see over the top of some of the taller students. Somehow, between answering questions (her answer would’ve been that she had a talent at losing most things and she was oblivious to people watching her) and starting the activity, the blonde had managed to wiggle her way towards her best friend. “Hello” she whispered to the Hufflepuff and then sent a subtle wave over to her fellow Ravenclaw Ezra before turning back to the lesson to actually concentrate.

Practice wasn’t her favourite part of lesson but it was definitely the most required. She wasn’t sure whether it was the pronunciation or the wand movement but getting spells on her first try wasn’t her forte. “Oh-bee-ek-tum reh-VEH-lee-oh” she repeated several times over, drawing a triangle in the air with her finger. At least it was an easy to remember shape too. “Obiectum Revelio!” she enunciated, drawing the triangle with her wand and for once in her life being successful on the first try as the white light followed her wand and remained in the air for a few seconds before softly fading. “Oh! OH! I did it” the blonde beamed, only realising after her exclamation that it was likely a her problem that she never got it first attempt and that the younger students were still a lot better than she was.

Treasure hunts seemed to be a recurring theme in lessons at Hogwarts, especially ones that resulted in some sort of prize that the students got to keep afterwards. She wasn’t complaining though, bribery did seem to have an affect on performance. Once the Professor had finished explaining, the sixth year slipped out of her seat and skipped over to grab a pouch for herself and for Anna which she carried back over to their desk. “We work on this together, yes? Because two brains are better than one.” Especially when it came to this particular duo.

Greer took her hard "Chirping Robot Bird (in nest on a tree branch)" is what her's said. Okay so she knew the approximate where abouts. She could do this - she had alreayd been close when practicing before. She took a quick gaze around and decided on what area of trees to actually begin.

Thinking about the little tiny robot bird and drawing her wand out. "Obiectum Revelio" Tracing the triangle. To her surpise the shape of the robot appeared and began to guide her. She did a little happy dance and lost the charm. "Oh rats!" She said to herself, okay next time no happy dance!

"Obiectum Revelio" She said again, trying it all over, this time when the shape appeared Greer kept her compsure and began to follow the trail. Hoping she'd find what she was looking for!

Being a lover of the outdoors made it easy to hype herself up for lessons. Not that she needed it for a Charms lesson. Bry had arrived quietly shortly before the lesson had began and taken an empty spot near Aryan as per usual for her. The typical greeting had been given, finger wiggle waves, a bright smile to Professor Feirgrund and a light elbow nudge to the boyfriend.

Blue eyes had wandered about taking in everything from the gardens, to the duck pond to that box on the desk. While she may not have given a verbal response to the first question, Bry knew plenty of times she had misplaced things. It had always resulted in a full on search for said item from her and if she could manage it, others to help her. Like the time Bacon her Jarvey had his one of her favorite high top sneakers! Annnnnd the time she couldn't find Falkor her plushie dragon! Now that had been a disaster!

As for feeling watched... ALL THE TIME! Being the youngest and having her mama as one of her professors, it made sense, didn't it? She thought so. Plus, this was Hogwarts! Everything was always watching them!

Anyways... Before she could dwell on that any further the lesson was moving on. Bry made sure all the important notes were taken because there was no doubt she would be needing this information again at some point. Starting now.
Oh-bee-ek-tum reh-VEH-lee-oh may have been the proper pronunciation of the incantation needed to make an item appear. An item she would need to find. Okay, she could do that. Maybe. "Oh-bee-ek-tum reh-VEH-lee-oh” Nice and slow. Terribly. The first several times she had tried to say it, she had undoubtedly ruined it for all it was worth. This wasn't uncommon for her though. Gotta push through and sound it out better then she was. "Oh-bee-ek-tum reh-VEH-lee-oh” Over and over again until it finally rolled off of her tongue with ease. "Obiectum Revelio."

Now, all she had to do was pair it with the wand movement. Wand in hand and starting at the top, a triangle shape was traced through the air in front of her, "Obiectum Revelio." Nothing. Not even a glimmer of light. Not a thing on the second try either. On the third try there was the faintest trail of light at the start of the triangle but it quickly faded away.

She needed to get this before she could go treasure hunting!
