Located on the third floor is the classroom for Charms. It was October, with cooler skies but not enough to warrant a jumper indoors. Through the open door, passing the Halloween decorations the desks were aligned in their usual spots, though with less space. Why? There were now big boxes next to each desk. Try as you might to move or open them, they remain rooted and sealed. Meanwhile, Professor Feirgrund remained at the front of the board ready to acknowledge each student that enters in.
Where are we at? Q1 - Greetings + First question. A1 - Responses + Practice Wand movement + pronunciation A2 - Using the Feather-light & Levitation Charm
--- OOC: Welcome! Class has already begun, but you can jump right in posting as if they were here all along. While this is the first RP class, IC-wise there have been many beforehand. Be sure to check the rules & canon info if not familiar before settling in.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
It was almost Halloween! It was sort of difficult for Ary to wrap his head around the fact that almost two months had been completed since his return to Hogwarts for his second year. But here he was, stepping into the Charms classroom for another lesson. The boxes - which had pretty much become a stand with professors, in his opinion - stood beside each desk. What was in them? Something for today’s activity? Hmm.
As usual, Ary felt a little pang that meant he missed Professor Roulan, particularly whenever he stepped into the Charms class. Professor Feirgrund, whom he gave the finger wiggle-wave to, wasn’t doing a bad job as Charms professor though. Greeting out of the way, the Slytherin manoeuvred his way through the boxes and desks, settling to take a seat somewhere in the middle of the room.

"Hi professor," Zara dutifully greeted the adult in the room as she came in, nodding also to her fellow Slytherin. "Hello." Just being polite, as one does, especially since she was almost an upperclasswoman and the daughter of a former Head Boy and all that jazz.
She flipped her reddish hair over one shoulder and settled down in a desk beside a box. She knew by now not to touch things until the professor said so, and instead took out her notebook to start doodling boxes and cubes. She was curious, sure, but she could also contain her magical curiosity for about five minutes or until class started.

Charlie felt sure it had taken him longer than usual to get over his last bout of illness, and that was even with the precaution of having missed so much school of the end of his first year. He'd thought it was all done and dealt with, but the new term had again brought him within reach of other students' germs, not to mention cold and flu season being right around the corner if not already here, and suddenly he found himself with a familiar cough and an even more familiar wheeze in his chest. No doubt more was on the horizon. Lame.
For the time being, Charlie had taken to wearing a regular muggle mask when he was around tons of other kids, like in lessons, because the magical equivalent wasn't suitable for him. Even though he still thought it shouldn't be up to him to take all these precautions, he did it anyway. The lung stuff was aggravating, painful, and no small inconvenience, and he didn't fancy yet another long St Mungo's stay so soon after the last. The sooner he got over it, the better.
As he entered the classroom, masked up but otherwise in uniform, Charlie gave Feirgrund a salute in greeting, before taking up a seat at random that happened to be near one of the other second years. Ary, or something. Charlie gave him a nod of acknowledgement, glanced over at the older girl already seated, then turned his attention to the box beside him. For a moment, he thought about opening it up to see what was inside - there was nothing, no notice or anything, to tell him not to - but ultimately found his curiosity lacking. The contents would be revealed soon enough, so why bother checking it out now?
So he left it, and lounged back in his chair instead, arms folded, tilting ever so slightly on the back legs of his chair, waiting for things to get kicked off.

Days of Potter 2023:___________________________ Which Bertie Botts Flavour Are You?
Another day, another lesson. Listen, she was trying really really hard to keep up with her studies this year when there was not an exhaustive exam leering over her head for the end of the term, but it was really hard to not want to revert back to old habits and truly enjoy sixth year as the break it was meant to be.
Entering the classroom, Vera adjusted the strap of her bag and straightened her tie at the front of her uniform, before giving Professor Feirgrund a smile as she entered. After so many years of seeing him in the Muggle Studies classroom, she hadn't quite grown used to the change in scenery. "Hello, sir!" she greeted before giving nods to the other students already gathered as well. Aryan got an additional wink and finger wave of greeting, pleased to see one of her two favorite second years thus far present.
Though she imagined the other one was not far behind.
Sliding into an empty spot towards the back of the room, attention turned to survey the box. Did she want to open it already? Absolutely. She was considering if she could get away with it too since there was no express instructions to not.

Alissa was in a cheerful mood as she entered the Charms classroom that nice October day. She gave Professor Feirgrund a friendly smile. "Hello Professor!" She greeted, and then she turned and went to find her seat. She took one in the second row and her attention was immediately captured by the box by her seat. There was a similar looking box by every desk. She wondered if they each had the same thing in them. Liss glanced up at the board, wondering if it had any further instructions, but there were none. She glanced around at her classmates, and saw that none of them were opening their box. But they hadn't been told not to, so it wasn't like she could get in trouble for opening it, right? She decided that a little peek wouldn't hurt. So she tucked two fingers under the corner of the box and... it was stuck. She pulled a little harder, but it didn't budge. Considering the box didn't look like it should be stuck like that, she assumed it must be magically shut. So she just left it where it was and supposed she would find out what was in it soon enough.

It was still strange seeing Professor Feirgrund in the charms class, since she'd grown used to him in Muggle Studies in her first year. Nonetheless her eyes gravitated naturally to the the large boxes that were next to each desk, curious as to their contents. She REALLY wanted to look in the boxes. Perhaps if she had a quick peek when the Professor was distracted with chatting with another student???
Giving the Professor an innocent little finger wiggles of hello, she smiled politely at him, as she went to find an empty seat in the back of the room, casually positioning her bag gently on top of the box in such a way where she could hopefully peer into the box...

Neither late nor particularly early, Aurora arrived at Charms with her usual level of pep and enthusiasm. “Hi Professor!” she beamed over at Feirgrund skipping past the obvious boxes to sit behind the desk to the left of Zara. Of course not noticing the giant elephants in the room was pretty on par for the Ravenclaw, once her mind was focused on one thing that became her priority.
She’d considered addressing the fact that it was approaching Halloween by dressing up for the occasion but there had been nothing on the noticeboard. Although she wouldn’t have been embarrassed by being the only one, she would feel a little like a distraction to the rest of the class. It wasn’t until she turned to Zara that the boxes came into view. “What do you think is in there?” Her head tilted curiously.
Phoebe was not the biggest fan of school, but she liked charms. Charms had useful purposes and made life easier, so Phoebe took more interest in them than her other subjects. She was better at them, too. Arriving at the classroom a little bit early, she slipped into a seat next to Ary and Charlie. She could see that Charlie had a mask on his face, but she sort of moved on from that as soon as it registered. Maybe he was sick again and didn't want to get more sicker. She waved excitedly at both of them. "Look at these new pens my brother sent me! There are four, and they all write in black!" Phoebe was SO excited.
Having said her hellos, she immediately turned her attention to the box by her desk. How did this thing open? She wanted to see what was inside.
Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll
There was an extra little bounce in Desiree's step for two reasons. One, Halloween was coming, which meant two of her favorite things: costumes and candy. Two, she was on her way to her favorite lesson.
The first thing she noticed upon entering the charms classroom was the Halloween decorations. She couldn't help but smile as she imagined how decked out this room would've been when her dad taught the subject. Her smile remained firmly in place as she greeted Professor Feirgrund. ”Hello, Professor!” she said with a dainty hand wave. ”I like your decorations.”
Cue more smiles and waves for the other students. ”Hi, everybody!” she greeted, taking her seat. With her supplies neatly arranged on the desk in front of her, she eyed the box with a mildly intrigued expression. What was in there? She'd been at Hogwarts long enough to know not to open a random box, though she did try to move it to give herself a bit more space, only to find it stuck. Interesting! Maybe they were doing the Unsticking charm today?

Once again, Eliza strolled into class with an indifference in her step. She wasn't one to get too excited about any class unless there was some exception she was really interested in. Class was class, and that was that. Spotting the professor, she lifted the corner of her lips in the tiniest of smiles and gave him a quick nod. Other than that, she simply took a seat.
Yes, she was aware of the two big boxes sitting next to her desk, but no, she didn't try to open them or move them. Why would she? Even at eleven-years-old she knew better than to go poking her hands into boxes with unknown contents. With nothing else better to do, she just sat back in her seat and got herself comfortable.
It was approaching halloween, and that meant decorations, costumes and most of all candy that she loved. With her big orange pumpkin earrings on Emmie entered the Charms Classroom in an excited, and upbeat mood. Smiling sunnily over at their Professor she greeted "Hello Sir! Can you teach us how to make pumpkins fly today?" It'd be so cool. Spotting both Ary and Emma already seated she made her way over to occupy the empty desk on the left next to Emma trying not to walk into any of the big boxes that was just everywhere. "Hi Ems, what do think is in the boxes? Wouldn't it be cool if there were fillibuster fireworks?"
They were well into October and the weather was starting to get a bit chilly. For Yulietta it felt cold, having moved from a warm place on the side of this planet. It still felt surreal being here and attending magical lessons when all she was used to was muggle learning. It was still weird calling what used to be her normal life muggle.
Upon entering the charms classroom she made a quick beeline to her usual desk. It was only when she had her utensils ready that she looked up and smiled shyly at the professor. Her english tutoring was going well, but her nerves took over majority of the time and silenced her. That and her thick accent made her feel self-conscious.
So smiling politely was her go-to. It was safe.
Glancing at the box beside her table, she tilted her head curiously. She almost had a mind to poke at it, but what if a moth or something scarier came out at her. No. She'll wait.
Hooper loved Halloween! It was the perfect opportunity for him to dress up in a goofy costume, act all silly and just generally have a good time. Well, he could if he didn’t have his NEWTs but he wasn’t about to let that stop him from admiring the decorations at least.
“Good morning Professor. What’s with the boxes? We finishing the halloween decorations?” Because he was totally down for that. Not bothering to try and get them open, Hooper settled down in one of the desks near the back, not far away from Vera and waited patiently for the rest of the students so the lesson could begin.
Hope sauntered into Charms, not to early but not too late. "Hello, Professor Feirgrund," she said casually, still vaguely surprised to find him in Charms class every period. Then she took a seat in one of the back rows, behind fellow Ravenclaw, Alissa. She noticed the boxes right away, but felt it beneath her new dignity to take any notice of them (even though she secretly longed to know what was in them). She watched Lissa out of the corner of her eyes as she tried to open hers, figuring she might catch a peek inside it if her classmate was successful. Which she wasn't. So Hope put on an air of unconcern and pretended that she wasn't interested in her box. Not at all.

Feirgrund returned the salute he was received. All too familiar with Master Upstead's condition, he would continue checking his status after the lesson, of course. No need to bring more attention than what the young lad was comfortable with.

Eventually, it came time for the lesson to began. Feirgrund checked out the door to confirm any other students on the way before closing the door.
"Good day, everyone," He addressed the class once the chatter died away. "It's nice to see the enthusiasm in a number of you. Today, we'll be learning the charm that makes heavy objects lighter in weight. The Feather-Light charm," Pausing to address the boxes, "Today you'll see what's inside the boxes after practicing. But first, can anyone share what sort of objects are too heavy for the average person to carry without the use of a wand?" There were no wrong answers or reactions here.. within reason.
OOC: Welcome, everyone! You can react/answer to either questions depending on your character's background. Class has started now so any new posters can post acting as if they were here all along without IC consequences for late arrival. The next post will be around 24 hours from now.
Phoebe stopped trying to open the box and raised her hand to answer the question. Because she was still unusually small and not very strong, she felt like an expert in this question. "I can't pick up a piano! Or a big box. Or even more than a few books at a time, really. So usually I need somebody else's help to carry things." She hated needing help, though, and was eager to learn how to carry things with her wand, which seemed easier than waiting for her growth spurt. But they weren't learning levitation, they were learning lightening. "Professor, I wouldn't be ale to pick up a piano even if we put the feather light charm on it. It would be too bulky to hold. What should I do in that case?" That seemed like a big problem unless she had someone to help, which was a problem because she liked to do things herself!
Oooh! A feather-light charm would definitely be resourceful for any wizard, lean or strong!
Etta thought carefully about the question and it seemed like there were no right or wrong answers. There were many things that could be heavy for the average person the carry without a wand.
Thinking practically, on average she could lift about 10-15 pounds on her own and 20-25 at its heaviest with assistance. Raising her hand she answered, ”A bookshelf.” Whether large or small shelves, they packed their weight.

Oh good. The professor hadn't noticed her feeble attempts at peering into the box. Although perhaps it was because she hadn't actually seen anything. She glanced up though when Emmie asked her about the box, looking like a deer in headlights even though she hadn't seen anything and nothing jumped out at her. What was in there, she had no idea and she was about to say as such, when Professor Feirgrund was starting the lesson.
Well this would actually be a useful charm to know. "A Hogwart Student's trunk," she offered simply, after waiting her turn to offer an answer. She was actually going to say a couch, but changed her mind when her moment came to speak. Because honestly, those trunks were HEAVY and she doubted she'd be able to maneuver it without a cart or help from her family. Although come to think it, made her wonder if this charm was used by the caretaker and groundkeeper to get all the student's trunks from Hogsmeade station to their dormitories? Probably because that would be A LOT of manual labor without use of a charm.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Rather than obsess about what was in the boxes - why should he when the entire was going to find out some enough? - Ary went about placing his books and writing materials before him. While watching the other students trek in, of course.Friendly finger wiggle-waves were sent in Zara’s, Charlie’s {was his fellow second year going to be okay?}, Vera’s, Desiree’s, and Emmeline’s directions.
“Hi, Pheebs.” Ary loved that the two saw each other so regularly {because they obviously shared a common room} but they never failed to greet the other. He also loved that she was excited about the pens she received. “Oh, wow. They’re pretty. Are they gel inks?” He liked those, thanks to Dynah who had a range of them.
With the door to the classroom shutting, the Slytherin turned his attention back to Feirgrund. Okay, so the man wasn’t going to keep them in suspense too about the lesson’s topic. This was good. They were also going to focus on what was being kept in the boxes. This was also good. As for the question… Ary quickly raised his hand. “When there’s a sick hippogriff and it’s unable to walk. Most time it'll need to be moved to a more comfortable place.” This was him speaking from his second hand experience on the family hippogriff and dragon Reserve.

Liss had looked into the feather-light charm a bit on her own, but she was looking forward to formally learning it in class. It seemed like a spell that could be really useful in a lot of different situations. Like Professor Feirgrund's question about what objects were too heavy to be carried without magical help, there was an infinite number of possible answers for that. It also depended on the strength of the person. She raised her hand to give her answer. "A refrigerator is heavy and you're supposed to clean under them and behind them but they're too heavy to move so a feather-light charm would probably make that easier." When her family had moved from Indiana they'd had to do a deep clean of their old house. Her parents had been able to use magic for it, though, which had made it a lot easier than it would have been for muggles.

Despite her OWL score for the subject being defined as abysmal by her mother, Mitsuki did have a strong aptitude for Charms. She had hardly argued the matter while at home, doing so seemed quite pointless considering how set in her disappointment mother had been in juxtaposition to dad's fidgeting and fretting, and simply withdrew into the fact that the exam had failed to capture her attention and interest and thus she had lost all motivation and focus during the execution of what had been a rather straightforward practical and humbly complex practical. Somehow Charms remained on her schedule and she was still in an adjustment period of seeing Professor Feirgrund in this particular capacity. Most of the current Hogwarts faculty appeared to be able to don several a hat so she supposed she ought not be so sluggish in adapting to the change.
It was far more easier to handle in light of the onslaught of memories and intensified emotions still complicating her day to day steps.
Keeping to herself, as per usual, but still with a softer and less melancholic look to her features, an addition as of the conclusion to last term, Mitsuki's eyes casually shifted about to each of her peers. Her overwhelmingly younger peers and Mitsuki lacking a certain disposition that catered to their encouragement. Her eyes briefly narrowed on Vera and Desiree, for different yet overlapping reasons, before shifting back to the professor and his introductory remarks about the Feather-light Charm - a charm she had a long standing relationship with and had been nearly co-dependent upon until she could hold and perform with her large brush for performance calligraphy.
So, what was too heavy for the average person? What constituted as the average person? The Ravenclaw found this particular line of questioning too subjective for her liking and rather than answer took to drawing the feathers from various bird species on the back of her hand since her parchment was already quite saturated by doodles from the lesson prior.

Sitting dead center in the middle of the room, notebook casually resting atop the desk before him, was Archie O'Brien. Posture was being propped up by the back of his chair, while one of his feet just chilled on the top of the box next to desk; hopefully the Professor wasn't too mindful on that. And if he was, well, that would be something to worry about if the need had actually arisen because for the time being, the Scottish third year would listen with intent as the Professor finished up greetings and started to elaborate on what they would be doing today. The ears of Archie would perk upwards like a dog's would upon hearing the Charm that they'd be learning, as it sounded like one which could prove to be a huge help in a lot of cases. The Feather-Light Charm. Obviously, the question being posed to the students after the little opening spiel was also intrinsically tied into it.
While the question in question wasn't exactly a hard one to answer, there was just an exponential amount of answers one could actually give for it and still be suitable. Some of the other student's in the classroom would then proceed to give their own answers to it. Most Archie thought, while technically true as all of them couldn't be lifted normally, didn't exactly fit in with the context that he would have put it. His mind personally raced towards even larger objects than what was currently being mentioned.
So, with his left hand raised upwards, the index finger taking the lead while the other four curled ever so slightly downward toward the palm of the hand, he'd give a brief pause within the moment. Not dramatically long, more so simply out of respect so it wasn't viewed as him blurting out an answer. "I do have to slightly disagree with some of my peers, Professor, as some of those can still be lifted without a wand specifically, granted, said objects would still require something like a lift or pulley system to actually still do so. And, don't get me wrong, that's not to discredit the other answers as well. But, to give my answer on the matter, something that one would definitively require a wand and some kind of spell to lift would be one of those large muggle trucks with all the wheels on them. 18-wheelers, I believe is the term for them." And, Archie knew that even then, given the first half of his response, it wasn't necessarily the best answer. But even with a large-scale pulley system of some sorts, it would require a great amount of effort even then. Also, there was the question and potential problem of if someone even possessed enough power and skill to be capable of lifting all that weight with a spell.
Sometimes though, an exaggerated response was the best kind of response in his eyes.
Charlie's gaze flicked to Phoebe as she arrived, and then to the... pens? Sure, at the pens she had with her. That apparently all wrote in black.
"Cool," he said, except that he didn't really find it cool, more couldn't figure out how he was supposed to react, and what it was that made them exciting. Maybe because so many wrote with quill and ink here? At least the Slytherin boy, Ary, had that covered, so all Charlie needed to do was look interested. Usually something he could master just fine, but less so when his energy was had been sapped, as now. At least his face was half-covered, and not liable to give him away.
Soon enough, though, they were getting on with things. Charlie made himself comfortable, lounging in his chair, prepared to simply listen for the moment mostly because, at the moment, too much talking tended to cause problems.
But then he did chime in, entirely overlooking the hand-raising business. "Some people are so big-headed it's a wonder how they manage to carry their egos a-..." He broke off, because lo and behold, a wracking cough suddenly siezed him. He stopped a moment to cough and wheeze, and banged on his chest before finishing in a slightly strained, slightly annoyed voice. "-... around."
See? Aggravating. The delivery of a perfectly good line, ruined.

There were a LOT of things that were heavy, in both the physical and metaphorical sense but the Ravenclaw’s mind rarely fluctuated towards the latter. Aurora wasn’t the strongest, her sister had been teaching her how to box in a supposed attempt to ensure she could handle herself alone at the school but she was taking it as a means to build some muscle. That and the pink gloves she was given were very cute.
“Books are heavy!” Particularly those big textbooks that the Professors insisted that they learn from and the reason why, despite being capable of producing spells, Aurora often intentionally ‘forgot’ to bring with her to lessons. There were many other things she could’ve suggested such as Elephants and statues and mountains but none of them seemed to have the practical implications that Feirgrund was lucky looking for. The idea of being able to pick up an Elephant was quite amusing though.
Then a younger student rambled on about using lorries and pulley systems and other solutions to the aforementioned predicament. “But that sounds more complicated. Why would you if you could use magic?” Her Ma, Muggleborn and raised in a very muggle environment, still used her magic to make life easier at times even with exposure to Muggle technology.
