Another morning meant another Charms class, the soft and familiar sound of classical music greeting students upon their arrival. The desks are still arranged in a large horseshoe fashion, though these days those living in The Room are expected to sit to the left side of the room, those still residing in their dorms, the right. It was a small act to try and placate Rosier's besties, but it was something.
Professor Peralta is standing by the door, doing her best to hide her nerves. The tension in the castle these days was palpable and the hoods more vicious than ever, which meant the pressure to keep calm and keep the kids out of trouble was strong. So do Professor P a favor and be on your best behavior, okay? Charms class will be starting shortly.
OOC: Hello friends! Please remember that if you play one of the students living in The Room, you're being escorted to and from lessons! Also, please familiarize yourself with the Charms Rules and SSRPG Rules before posting! Thank you! Class has ENDED!

"Bombarda, Professor."
She knew, she knew, this was not typically the spell thought of when it came to stopping people but her classmates were running through the list so fast and in the middle of her panic to offer something useful, all Emm could really DO was think back to former lessons.
In this case, it was a former Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson.
"You...you cast it in the direction you don't want them running in....then they start running the other way. Some times they just stop altogether, dead scared another explosion will happen." That was what happened with the dummies. They still seemed so real when she managed to sleep at night, and more often than not they ended up looking like that one muggle no matter who they started out looking like.
Poor nameless muggle guy.

Will was going to have his go to spell to answer for this whole year so far. Here we go he was getting ready to answer. Yes this was the moment. WHAT NO!! Emmerson!! Bombarda was his answer! Not cool. You're lucky he's too weak and honestly now at this point isn't even angry enough to care. He's pretty sure he just heard his stomach growl so he'll focus on the ever encroaching starvation with the scraps they feed them each day.
He still didn't know that many charms either. He was still figuring out many of the ones that were taught last year. Ugh he didn't know "Maybe...Confundus?" The young Slytherin finally mustered up an answer. "I guess you could. Leave them so confused they stop in their place and try to remember what they were doing there to begin with Again that was a stretch. But his better response was taken.

Camryn was done. She was so over everything.....school, the hoodies, just everything. It had gotten so bad that she didn’t even have the energy to be anxious anymore. She would, however, answer the professor’s question. As long as they continued to teach, or pretend to......she would make an effort.
Raising her hand, Cam proceeded to give her answer and try to look enthusiastic about it. “The leg locker curse professor. That would definitely slow someone down.” Well stop the altogether, really. Unless they wanted to hop after you and that didn’t seem to be very effective.

Professor Peralta had a pleasant voice, or it felt more pleasant right now than he remembered previously so that was helping his shoulders feel less tense. Even if the subject of the day felt daunting and not entirely like something he wanted to do. He did love a good game of freeze tag every now and then...but Atlas was beginning to hate the idea of chasing people. Chasing and confining them.
He also knew that he was getting terribly ahead of himself with his thoughts, so it was best to tuck those away.
"...a sticking charm...a permanent sticking charm to be more thorough," he offered meekly while trying his darndest not to look at Emmerson for her suggestion. Atlas used to love blowing things up, doing so with firecrackers and fireworks had been the most fun, but now...well...

Claudine had a bored expression on her face as she watched the others trickle in. Of course, she really wasn’t feeling that way but it was a way to mask the annoyance within her. She wanted to smile at Fiona but who knew how The Hoods would react to that. And yes, she did miss being around her dormmate. At least she had Heath and Ashley on either side of her. And there were the rest of the Rommies. Quite the group of outcasts they made.
Charms materials out? Yes. Gaze to the front of the room? Also yes. Easy question to start off the lesson’s discussion? Check. Claudine was in no hurry to provide any reply at the moment, obvious answer or not, so she took some time to just listen. After one of the Flamsteed boys spoke, her hand went up. “Immobulus,’’ the Snakette volunteered. It was one of the Charms that was her strongest.
Far away or all too present, the effect was somehow much the same. Nem heard the greeting but disregarded it, and kept reading the book they'd brought with them instead. They continued in this vein until the moment they heard the door close, and then looked up, snapped the book shut, and dropped it into their school bag. Ostensibly ready to learn, but locking their eyes on the professor at the front of the room might have just about been their limit.
Spells that could impede someone's movement. There were so many that could be supplied, including an entire arsenal of spells that weren't even intended for that reason, as long as they were used creatively. Nem thought back suddenly to that first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson from last year, their little trick with Lumos Maxima in a dimly lit room. While not having been cast specifically on anyone, it had certainly served as an obstacle for plenty of people. An impediment.
That had been the first lesson with the Big Man, too, though he'd had the Headsman's face. Maybe the first time Rosier had seen their promise.
For the time being, Nem perused memories of the past eighteen months or so, instead of trying to engage with the current moment, though they kept eyes on Peralta. Not trying to remember anything in particular, just going over the same old stuff.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Fiona already had her Charms materials out and was focused on the front of the classroom. Once Professor Peralta asked her question, the Slytherin raised her hand. "I was thinking that Manus Invisibilis might be a good spell to use. It allows for a more targeted attack. You could aim the spell at someone's legs, for example."

Kinsay looked around the room nervously. She was always scared that the Hoods would burst through the door and aim for her face again. Even though she knew it was not very Gryffindor of her to be scared, she still was sometimes. More than just sometimes. A lot more than she wanted to admit. So she continued to look around the room nervously, wracking her mind in the meanwhile to think of a good spell to suggest.
She was so caught up in trying to think up an answer, that she didn't even pause to think about everyone else's answers. She liked doing that usually. Most of her answers came in the form of questions. But not lately. Lately she just wanted to answer to get it over with. So that she wouldn't get into any trouble.
"Ebublio," she started, the first spell that came to mind. One that had come up a whole lot lately. "Because it'll trap someone in a bubble and then they... can't move.. out of the bubble?" It was a terrible answer and she knew it. It made her feel kind of silly, so she ducked her head bashfully.

Dahlia cast a quick glance and an even quicker tiny flicker of a smile at Tadhg when he sat down near her. Good, he wasn't too far away. It was much easier to keep an eye on him when he wasn't behind her or across the room. They had to continue to look out for one another no matter what the circumstances were.
Quietly she began to take out her things, laying them neatly on her desk as she always did. In her hand remained her quill so note taking could happen right away. Lia had to think for a moment. While the question wasn't a difficult one, most of the answers she thought of were already said. Except for one. Raising her hand, Dahlia waited to be called on. "Levicorpus would keep them from going anywhere." Can't get far if you're hanging upside down by your foot.

No, Heath was done with being smart. He'd been smart all term, and look what it got him! He wasn’t going to keep holding on to false hope that acting a certain way would keep him safe, but although he’d lost all hope for himself, he still held out hope for Claudine. He wouldn’t act on his anger for her sake, but he wasn’t going to pretend he didn’t feel it either. He’d done enough pretending to be emotionless for one lifetime, and unbeknownst to the professor, his anger did serve a purpose other than getting him into trouble. It kept him from spiraling into despair.
Another good thing about his anger? It kept him too alert to nod off in lessons. He looked to the front of the room, specifically to the board as he considered the question that appeared on it. Every spell he thought of was more damaging than the last… sensory deprivation using Obscuro or a Conjunctivitis Curse (or a combination of the two), transfigure the opponent into an inanimate object, vanish their legs, or sever them… but Peralta asked for a spell to impede an opponent, not permanently incapacitate them. He went with a tamer option. “The Stickfast Hex, Colloshoo,” he said after raising his hand, “impedes an opponent’s movement by sticking their shoes to the ground.”

Giving Dahila a quick small smile he gotten everything he needed for class out, one thing for sure he was glad to have his wand back again, going back and forth giving it and receiving it was getting old, it was his wand not theirs. He was glad to have Lia by his side, gave him some comfort in all this madness. She was his best friend and so much more, he cared about her deeply and didn't want her to get hurt.
Taking notes and nodding to what his fellow classmates said bit his lip thinking. Most of them were already said, but he knew some more that could be used. At least some he read about and his dad told him about. Raising his hand he waited to be called on. "What about Everte Statum? It throws the person back, ebough time fo escape."

"Impedimenta," she rattled off the obvious answer first. Hey, if you could be first, why not?
The thing was, Neva didn't like using the kid gloves. She wished she didn't have to, but some of the students had proven time and time again that they needed them, and so here they were.
"The impediment jinx certainly qualifies, yes. The only downside is that it only lasts for a very brief amount of time. That's something to keep in mind when choosing to use this particular spell."

As far as Ash was concerned, that would be unfair. She looked the professor straight in the face as she continued to sneakily draw on her arms. Out of sight, of course. She would put them away when she had to. Which was definitely not now. If she couldn't rebel against Rosier, then she would rebel against everyone else instead.
The second year was not quite as stealthy as she thought and while hiding her arms under the table might've been a good way to conceal the marker, the setup of the desks in a horseshoe, as well as the fact that Peralta could clearly see that she was moving her arms under the table, was clue enough that she was up to something. For now the Charms Professor let it go, but the complete disregard for her instructions didn't go unnoticed. They'd be speaking about it later.
"Good. The full body-bind curse would completely stop movement of the intended target if cast correctly."

Maybe what they learned today could help them escape survive The Room. She nibbled on the inside of her cheek as she tried to think what spells she knew that could make it harder for someone to move. Bernadette had already said the obvious answer.
She raised her hand. "Incarcerous," she said. Being tied up could definitely make it harder to move. Plus, she was getting good at that one.
"Good thinking, Miss Turov." Neva nodded in approval. "The Incarcerous Spell, when done correctly, can conjure ropes or cords that can be strong enough to stop a targets movement. Good."

For now, she rolled it absent-mindedly in one hand as she thought about what spells would answer Professor Peralta's question. Finally, her free hand rose up. "There's Glacius," she said. "Cover the surface someone's walking on in ice and that'll make it more difficult to move."
"The Freezing Spell can be used not only on the area surrounding a target as Miss Grimm pointed out, but also directly on a target." So it was a multi-purpose kind of spell. "Nice work, Ivy."

Or was that not where this lesson was heading?
While Kale remained an upbeat and helpful force in the Room, in classes he felt more anonymous, like he didn't have to put on such a show that he was fine. Which meant he was kinda quiet. Sorry, Professor.
Still, he managed to quietly contribute, "Rictusempra." A good giggle could bring down any witch or wizard.
This answer brought a small smile to Neva's lips. It wasn't a spell she would've considered had Mr. Trent not brought it up, but it had merit. "The Tickling Charm could certainly take someone out of commission. Not only does the laughter overwhelm, but it can weaken, which would make it quite hard for a target to continue to move in the way they want. Good, Mr. Trent."

The Ravenclaw blinked a few times, trying to keep herself alert. "The jelly-legs curse," she managed to say after raising her hand. Not exactly the most sophisticated way to stop someone, but it was effective nonetheless. It was hard to move when your legs were collapsing out from under you.
Avalon's sleepiness didn't go unnoticed and Neva made a mental note to check in with her later to make sure she was okay, aside from the obvious exhaustion that was plaguing her at the moment.
"The Jelly-legs curse is a spell that stops the targets legs from functioning properly, causing them to collapse." She nodded at the sixth year. "Good, Miss Sinclair."

"The knockback jinx" he said after raising a hand in the air. Nothing more to add, he was too tired for that.
"The Knockback Jinx is a good way to temporarily hinder the target's movements by knocking them backwards. The combination can be impactful both phsycially and mentally. Thank you, Mr. Yoon."

Zero.
And it was getting to her.
What had Peralta said? Aboli couldn't keep her eyes open. She rubbed them a little bit to help, but other than that, she hardly moved. She also spotted Noah and made sure to hold eye contact for a second before trying to pay attention to class. They could talk...later. Later.
Miss Song's lack of answer didn't go unnoticed and Professor Peralta was a little surprised. This was not the girl who'd come to her office seeking guidance on non-verbal spells. Clearly this term had taken its toll and Neva made a mental note to check in with the seventh year when she could. For now, she shifted her gaze to the next student who offered up a response.

"The Confundus Charm creates confusion, which could make a target stop and consider the direction they were headed in, or what they were doing all together. It might not be the most direct way to impede movement, though." Obviously.

"Good work, everyone. While some of your answers directly stopped movement all together, others offered up spells that took a creative approach in preventing the target from moving in the way they might intend to. " And all of these spells could be useful to the students, so she hoped they'd been added to their notes.
"Today's lesson will focus around Miss Blaze's answer, Immobulus, the Freezing Charm. This charm can be used to stop movement or function of people and objects. With this in mind, what situations can you think of where the use of the Freezing Charm would come in handy?"
OOC: Hi friends, thanks for all your participation so far! The second question is up and it is: What situations can you think of where the use of the freezing charm would come in handy? Please try not to repeat answers! Class will move on in about 30 hours from now

Ash did not really care if they would discuss it later. What was Peralta gonna do, give her detention? Express disappointment in her? Merlin forbid, take away *points*??? Pfft. Was she gonna torture her? No. Possess her? No. Leave her out of her will? No. Take away 300 points and blame her for rotting all the food in a school? No. Leave her to burn or drown? No. Kill her? No. She was powerless, then. Probably. Feeling the professors gaze, she put away her marker. Then she rested her hands on top of her chin and stared right back, her right arm now covered in marker. Hi, professor."If there was a shark chasing you, you could freeze the water around it and it would be stuck." She flushed. "It's a feasible situation if you live on the coast." It was true. Ash had seen sharks before. Most of them weren't that scary. They were little. But some of them were big and scary and fast and could take your limbs off or worse. It was a feasible scenario for her. "Or if a person was chasing you in water or a boat, you could freeze them too." That was especially feasible.
If Peralta had made note of how Aboli was looking/feeling, Aboli did not notice. The freezing charm was lovely, though. Lovely was not a good word...but Aboli found her thoughts often cloudy like that. Lovely...well.
Aboli slowly raised her gloved hand. "If you're being attacked by an unfriendly animal. You can freeze it to get away," Aboli offered, thinking of the Dragon field trip debacle recently. :|
And that was that. Aboli grew quiet again.

Mamie wrote down all these spells people were coming up with. Who knew which could come in handy sometime? All of them, probably, if she could learn them. She probably couldn't, given she never had her wand outside of class. As to when the freezing charm would come in handy, Mamie knew that one immediately.
From experience.
"The Whomping Willow," she said, hand raised. Though she probably couldn't cast it on the whole tree. Maybe even just a branch that was coming your way could be frozen, so you could get out of the tree's reach.

Octavia both noticed and didn't notice her friends. She watched them without watching them at all. It was one of many skills she picked up when being taught by her mother over the years, last year especially. So when Kinsay focused her attention on Tavie the older girl reciprocated, offering up a small smile to her friend.
She missed her friends so much that it crippled her when she thought too much on it. So much so that just the simple act of opening up her heart enough so that Kinsay would know that she too was dearly missed, was almost too much.
It was why she missed the first question and why she couldn't give a response for ways to use the...freezing charm? Something. Whatever.

It was a small thing really, but hearing the words "Nice work" from Professor Peralta...it made Ivy sit up a little straighter in her seat. Maybe it was silly, but anything close to a compliment at this point felt like a breath of fresh air, even if it was just about how she answered a question.
As for the next one... It didn't take long to think of a situation this spell would be useful. She raised her hand. "If someone's about to attack someone else, the Freezing Charm would be useful for stopping them before they can."

The freezing charm was a weirdly aggressive one, in the Gryffindor's not-so-humble opinion. And the horrible gut feeling in his tummy just knew it'd be twisted later in the lesson as some way to punish adversaries and more specifically Muggles.
So, he opted not to play into that hand yet. Like his tickling charm answer, Kale answered, "Firework goes off. Looks fantastic when it first bursts but kinda wimpy as it fades away. Wonder if you could freeze it when it first explodes to sorta keep the burst of light in the sky longer."
"If you were being attacked by a group of something--like a swarm--you could use Immobulus to freeze them all and give you a chance to figure out a way to deal with them, one at a time." Violet said, though she wasn't much motivated to participate in class ever since being exiled to the Room.

Camryn was pleased that she was able to come up with a correct answer to the first question. When the second question came along, she had thoughts. Apparently Immobulus was the spell of the day and the professor wanted to know what the spell could be used for. What Cam would like to use it for was to stop the bad guys in their tracks. There were more students and professors than hoodie guys. How she wished that they could just Immobulus them all.
Snapping back to reality, Camryn raised her hand and began to give her alternate answer. “You could use the spell if someone threw an object at you. You could stop it with the Immobulus and keep yourself from possibly getting injured.” Of course Protego might be the best way to go in that situation, but it was always good to have options.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
There were some pretty good responses added to the board. Claudine started to make her notes as Peralta added them, and was utterly startled to hear her name being called. Wait… what had she done? Looking up wearily at Peralta, as though expecting she was in some form of new trouble with The Hoods. It took her about five seconds to fully register the words and the fact that they were focusing on the Charm she had named. Claudine went from weary to delighted. She loved this particular Charm!
A hand went up. “I know it can be used to render Muggle burglar systems useless.’’ She lowered her hand as she hastily added, “That’s another inferior and silly device they have created since it’s no match for witches and wizards.’’
Avalon took a few minutes to jot down all the spells that her classmates were naming. She had been trying to pay extra attention to potentially defensive spells lately, given everything that was going on at Hogwarts. Not that they would really be of any use, given the fact that she had to relinquish her wand every time she came back to the Room. But in case she ever needed to defend herself in the corridors, these were good to know.
"If someone was falling, you could use Immobulus to stop them. It'd be particularly helpful if you could freeze them with it right before they hit the ground. To absorb some of the shock." Not the best spell to use in that situation, but if you were in a pinch, it could be useful. "Arresto momentum would probably be a better choice, but if you needed a minute to think or prepare a better landing spot, a freezing charm could work."

Phoebe was NOT feeling like herself, so it took her a while to perk up to the professor's topic of choice. Not that she didn't have an opinion about every spell ever created, but it was hard to care deeply about anything right now. Still, OWLs, right? Had to keep throwing her brain at the books and hoping some small something would stick. Enough that made this whole thing worth it.
"Um. If you're asked to herd Muggles during Defense and they all start panicking and won't be herded, you could just drop them with the spell and move them physically."
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
Uh? The Freezing Charm can be used to stop Muggle Alarms? William hadn't thought of that. That seemed so surreal even for a magical spell to be able to stop a burglar system. Even so he wanted to contribute something. He was already somewhat more talkative for this class surprising even himself. Still wimpy and fearful of just about everything that could happen to him in this school but...eh...might as well. He probably wasn't going to make it. "You could freeze your Alarm Clock and get some more sleep." What a dumb answer! If he was still sleeping in a bed he usually kept his wand at his bedside table next to some clock. Why not just hit the clock. It's extra work to use magic. Magic was terrible.

Tavie's smile made Kinsay feel so much lighter. It was something little, but Kizzy had come to realize that sometimes the little things were the biggest things. This one sure was anyway. So when she turned back to pay attention to class, she didn't feel quite as miserable as she had felt before. Even if it was only by a little bit.
And though Kiz still wasn't feeling up to answering, she still wracked her brain for something worthwhile to contribute. Just incase. She didn't want any trouble, she really didn't. It wasn't until Ashley spoke that Kinsay felt brave enough to raise her own hand, this time wearing a DEEP frown! "A shark wouldn't chase you just because," she pointed out defensively, turning to face the other second year. It was important that she knew. "Sharks are only misunderstood, Professor." She nodded adamantly, turning back to Professor Peralta now. "People are only scared because they don't know. But sharks don't like to hurt people usually, not unless you're horrible to them first." It was really, really important that they knew. People always thought sharks just like to attack, but they really didn't! You were more likely to die in a vending machine accident than by a shark attack!!
She was going to suggest using immobulus for playing games like Freeze Dance! But she was already feeling a little embarrassed for speaking earlier, so she stayed quiet instead.
