| | Welcome to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement On level 2 you will find what is arguably the most renowned department of the British Ministry, the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. The now defunct Department of Magical Education once shared this level, but now MLE has spread out and taken over. Magical Law Enforcement has always been one of the more popular career paths in the Wizarding World, many believe it to be quite glamorous and exciting, with much danger and plenty of heroics. While that's mostly true, level 2 itself is much like any other level in the Ministry of Magic. The various offices that make up the Department of Magical Law Enforcement come to work here every day, and the Wizarding public are more than welcome to report to reception if they have business with us, provided they've come through the security checkpoint in the atrium.
In the British Ministry, the offices which come under the jurisdiction of Magical Law Enforcement are: - The Office of Counterfeit Magic and Equipment Control
- The Improper Use of Magic Office
- Magical Law Enforcement Squad
- Auror HQ
- Ministry Security
- Wizengamot
Take a look around, and if you get lost, take a peek at the handy map that is tacked on the wall in the foyer outside the lifts. MLE: Office of Alexa Cambridge Having always had a penchant for rigging things with curses, it isn't advised that anyone try opening the door to this office unless having been invited to do so. The curses are rotated randomly but all are very much present and inconvenient if not outright deadly should you try to let yourself in. If you wish to have a word with the Department Head of Magical Law Enforcement, you'll find it more useful to set a appointment beforehand as she won't always be in office.
If it's an emergency or you happen to not be an employee on this level and don't know this procedure, simply write your name on the board by the door and the Lex will be with you the moment she can pull herself away from whatever she's got her hands in.
On the inside, you'll notice how spacious the room is, largely thanks to a few well placed expansion charms. Her dislike for being cooped up in the office is slightly lessened by increasing the space. Made the walls feel less like they were closing in.
The furniture is as comfy as she bothered to ensure and the books on the shelves are largely untouched and unused--but don't they look impressive?
The chocolate fountain in the corner is none of your business and should be left alone. MLE: Work Areas On one end of the department you can find the work areas for MLES, Aurors and Security employees. Most don't spend too much time at their desks as they are likely out on assignment or patrol duty. Each of the division's heads has an office should you need to stop by and have a word with them. If you can't find who you're looking for, ask Muriel over at the reception desk to help you.
During major investigations the area is flooded with employees and perhaps witnesses who have been brought in to wait. On one wall there are many pictures and documents pinned with information from current investigations. Another wall and above many of the desks are moving posters of the most wanted criminals in the Wizarding World. When they are caught they are magically marked with a large red X.
Every Auror, Hit Wizard and MLES Officer has their own desk here. YATIs do not and will earn them once they have completed the training. It's slightly different for the Security employees. The Head of Security, the Event Security Liaison Officers, and the Internal Investigations Liaisons have their own permanent desks, while the Ministry Sentinels, Security Officers and Wand Weighers work between this office and the Security post in the atrium, and do not have a personal desk of their own.
Please be aware of your surroundings in this area. No one likes a snoop. You don't want to be top of the list if things go missing.
On the opposite end of the department is an even larger work area with wide open spaces and lots of what looks like natural light. The windows have a beautiful view that changes from time to time, as it is charmed. The divisions are in separate areas but are not too far of a distance from each other.
Each of the division heads has an office. Every member of the MMAO, CMEC, and IUMO has their own permanent desks. The Wizengamot are based here but spend much of their time down in the courtrooms. However, they each have their own secure locker and you may on occasion find one or two of them working at a spare desk or going through a stack of court files and case histories.
The Forensics lab, a large storage room, the Evidence and Pensieve rooms, as well as the direct floo access aren't all too far from here. The conference room and the Department Head's office are a bit more of a walk. Make sure to keep a map on hand in case you lose your way the first few times in this department. MLE: Conference Room The conference room is large, and magically adjustable for situations where there is need to fit the entire department. This is where meetings will be held, demonstrations, parties, gatherings, trainings, and other such happenings. All divisions are permitted to use the conference room but the times must be booked, so there is no interference with other divisions. MLE: Reception and Waiting Area Is there a problem? Did you witness a crime? Have something to report? Stop by the reception desk and someone will help you as soon as they can. There's an instant coffee machine shoved off in one corner with a few chairs. Fill out one of the forms by the coffee machine and send it by paper airplane to the division you are seeking, or to the individual you wish to speak with.
Through the door to the left is a work area for Work areas, as well as the Magical Forensics Lab, a janitor's closet, and access to the Lifts and Direct Floos to the right you can walk through booking and interrogation with the Holding cells, the Conference Room, and the Department Head's Office. You may not enter these areas unless you are accompanied by an MLE employee.
Feel free to help yourself to the coffee while you wait. MLE: Exercise Room Active, hectic job or not, a little exercise never hurt anyone. In fact, in Law Enforcement, you're expected to be in good shape, especially those out in the field apprehending bad guys as part of their contribution to keeping the wizarding world safe. This room has everything you could possibly need for a good workout. There are a number of stationary bikes, treadmills, ellipticals and weight lifting benches with different sets of weights close by. A punching bag hangs in one corner, and mats are laid out throughout the room.
Don't get dehydrated! There's a watercooler that puts out nice cool water anytime you need it. There's also a shelf full of towels and a bin for you to dispose of the towels.
Spar with a partner or take some time to blow off some steam before you head into that interrogation. Just don't overdo it. MLE: Break Room It's no secret that on any day of the week, MLE-ers have a lot on their plate. A little time to unwind could certainly never be a bad thing. Once you've gotten a bit caught on on your work, stop by the break room for a cup of coffee and some interesting stories from those fresh in from the field.
The coffee is what it is, nothing tremendous but it certainly backs a punch. Feel free to lounge around for a moment--take a short nap on one of the couches if you're sure there's nowhere you NEED to be.
The break room has all the necessary appliances and a vending machine with snacks that change on a daily basis. Some days you'll find a treasure trove of sweet pastries. At other times savoury snacks fill the shelves. The vending machine next to it has the standard drinks you can grab on the go. Everything from butterbeer to pop and even water. MLE: Magical Forensics Lab The Forensics Lab might look old and outdated but it has cutting edge magical equipment. All the workstations and chairs are charmed to be impervius to any type of contamination. These charms are reinforced frequently. They are also charmed to be unbreakable but not completely indestructible. There are areas set aside for potion related work, magical crime scene forensics, muggle artifact adjustments, counterfeit magic identification or even restoration.
Everything a lab tech or an Auror could possibly need.
If you are a part of the IUMO Analysis and Assessment team, you will spend a lot of time in this room. So will those of you who are in the Bureau for the Confiscation of illegally modified muggle artifacts and Aurors who have undergone Forensics training.
If anyone from another department wishes to use the lab or any of the equipment inside the lab, they must seek permission from the Department Head of Magical Law Enforcement as well as permission from their own department head and cosigned by the laboratory supervisor who is a part of the IUMO division.
At the far side of the lab is a door leading to the Department darkroom. This is a restricted area. Please do not enter when the light is on. MLE: Evidence and Pensieve Rooms The Evidence and Pensieve rooms are only accessible by a locked door that opens only after an employee has presented their MLE badge. Therefore, only employees of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement have access to these rooms. Should anything come up missing or anything go wrong, understand you'll be the first checked. Do not allow unauthorized personnel beyond this point. Sensitive information is held in these rooms and it would be more than a shame if anything were to turn up broken or otherwise compromised.
The Evidence Room, on the right, is a large room with shelves full of evidence gathered by various members of law enforcement. Be sure to keep the files up to date and be careful with the labelling. Each shelved white box has a folder in the front that lists all information that can be found in the box and any possible information that has been acquired, as well as a list of inventory of the items found inside the box. Everything inside the boxes are charmed for safe keeping, securely stored, and labelled according to the date and divisions involved in the associated investigation. There are two registers on the wall, one for recording your visit and one for recording any evidence you handle OR remove from the room.
The Pensieve Room, on the left, is a slightly smaller room, which is filled with shimmery light. In the center of the room is a table with a large pensieve on top of it. On the shelves around the room, hundreds of vials both empty and full of memories from investigations can be found. Each vial that contains a memory states the date, the case it is being used in, and the person who's memory it is. They also contain any pertinent information such as if the memory was altered in any way.
At no point is it acceptable to have none MLE personnel in either room. MLE: Interrogation/Viewing Rooms and Holding Cells The interrogation rooms each have an unbreakable, one way mirror and a heavy door on one wall. Behind the mirror, of course, MLE employees can stand and observe the interrogation currently being conducted. These mirrors are charmed and not always activated. Sometimes they simply appear to be mirrors on both sides. Any investigation carried out within these rooms will be recorded in pensieve form for later review.
There is no escaping these rooms but likewise, if you're within one, you'll be perfectly safe from anyone seeking to cause you harm, unless said person happens to be the employee who brought you in here. Not to worry, while some rough housing does happen from time to time. Law Enforcement officers are required to leave you alive and in relative similar condition to when you'd been brought in.
The holding cells are sparsely decorated, closed off with heavy bars. The inside has table and a chair, as well as a makeshift bed which are all secured to either the wall or the floor. In some cases, both. A light hangs from the ceiling. Despite the precarious way it swings gently this way and that it is just as securely held in place and cannot be removed. It casts a yellow glow that is constantly and lazily in motion around the gray room. It may be in your best interest to ignore the occasional screams that come from the neighbouring cells. Not everyone can accept the concept of confinement. Don't be one of them.
