The Toxicology and Development Laboratory on level 3 is a facility set aside for employees of the Accidents and Catastrophes department in order to continually work on their brewing and potion identification skills, or develop some experimental potions for assessment and tweaking purposes. While this Laboratory is primarily for use by potioneers, it is also a space appropriate for those who are working to identify particular spells or charms as found on bewitched objects.
This is a larger and more modern-appearing space than the Magical Forensics Laboratory found on Level 2, and more specialised for Potion brewing and experimentation. Law Enforcement Employees with the appropriate clearance, DERP Botanists who need more space and facilities than what the greenhouses provide, and Ever-Locked Room Potioneers and Charmists from the Department of Mysteries are permitted to work here along side the Accidents and Catastrophes potions specialists as needed.
To one side of the lab there are brewing stations complete with all the equipment a potioneer might need. Along the back wall there are magical analysis machines that help with analysing constituent and component parts and ingredients of unidentified potions, as well as testing whether certain ingredients might react dangerously together. Along the other side of the lab you'll find stations for preparing ingredients and analysing bewitched objects. There is also a special magical poisons work area, and plenty of storage space for in-progress potions and completed brews.
If you need anything else within this space, you are expected to either provide it yourself or speak with your department head if it is something a little more questionable, large, or dangerous. Many muggle items are available in storage for charms or potions work (including a few automobiles), and you may indeed find some items within the storage cupboard on the other side of the department. Please remember this is a dangerous work zone and all safety procedures must be followed to the letter - use your protective charms and make use of the protective gear provided.
While this room is intended for use primarily by level 3 employees, those who work in other departments may make use of this space with a written request and approval from Maddox Quigley, Accidents and Catastrophes Department Head.

If YOU want to make use of this thread for RPing you are more than welcome to! A&C employees do not need to ask permission to RP here, and are encouraged to do so regularly to work on their character's skills. If you're not part of A&C please send DaniDiNardo a PM or VM or have your character make a request to use this space IC, you'll likely be approved but I'd like to keep track of who is in here, and the reasons for it too. I highly encourage MLE, DERP and Mysteries employees to come and play here!
Sometimes, a particular laboratory scenario may be provided for A&C employees to work on. An announcement will be made whenever these are happening.

Megan was outright tired!
She loved being in the field but there had been so much to do after that meeting earlier in the day. The team had been sent out to collect samples and take care of other business but now that they were back, the samples needed to be tested. At least she had taken charge of the water samples. Stephanie was with her and she figured the two of them could work on testing said samples. That is, if Stephanie was up to it.
"You need a break before we get started on this or would you rather work with someone else?'' the blond asked as she set multiple, labelled containers on one of the lab desks. She pitied the person who was in charge of testing sewage...

Stef was glad that she had someone that she could basically follow around when it came to completing these assignments - she always had troubling figuring out what she wanted to do to get started. Once she got the ball rolling, she had no trouble, but she was glad she could basically just follow Megan's lead and not have to worry about that. She grinned and shook her head.
"Nah, I'm good. Let's get started!" she told her, taking a hair tie out of her pocket and twirling her short blonde hair into a stubby pony tail so it was out of her face. "Any ones in particular you're just DYING to test?" she asked with a grin. All of them were questionable, in Steffie's opinion, but if Megan really REALLY wanted to take the lead on one, she'd let her.

She had cookies in her bag and Megan was thinking of them. But Stephanie's eager words told her that the other woman was ready to work. Quite frankly, she wanted to get this work done too. Boss man might not be happy if they dallied about.
"Actually, I was hoping I could take the lead on testing the water. You're welcome to help though. Or if you prefer you can take the lead on something else and I can give you help if you need it.'' Megan grinned and pulled on the lab coat and other safety equipment. Safety always came first! Then she busied herself with the water samples they had collected, pouring a tiny amount into various beakers and tubes to begin running tests.

Steffie let out a little chuckle and shook her head, blonde hair falling in front of her face. "That is PERFECT actually. I never like taking the lead on these things," she admitted. Steffie was 100% happy just following along and doing whatever people wanted her to do to get something done. She wasn't really a PLANNER. There was a reason her pretty pink and gold planner was literally blank, covered in stickers and nothing else...
"What do you want me to start with to help?" she asked the veteran worker, twirling her blonde hair around her finger as she looked at each beaker with interest.

Megan chuckled too. Stephanie was not one of those that didn't like to take the lead, eh? No big deal. The blond would ensure that she did exactly that someday but she wasn't going to be pushed into doing that today. "Not a problem today! You'll learn everything soon enough and then you'll be taking the lead at times.'' There would be no slackers in this department. Not that she thought that Stephanie was one.
"How about you grabbing a slide? We can start by putting a few drops of water on it then put it under the microscope.'' Megan's fingers conglobate around the nearest dropper. She needed one of these to ensure there would be no spillage.

Stef nodded and grabbed one of the boxes of slides, taking one out carefully and handing it over. Made sense - although if Stef looked at it under the microscope, she wasn't sure she'd see anything. Well, she probably WOULD but she certainly wouldn't know what she was looking at!
"What exactly are we looking for? Do you have any idea? Orrrr...are you just gonna see what's under there?" she asked with a smile. This was all interesting - it made her wonder if she should go back to uni so she could LEARN these things. Being a nanny was hardly a good learning experience when it came to like...advance charms or whatever.

"Thanks!'' Megan grinned and added a few drops to the slide then placed it under the microscope. "Oh, you know, anything that'll tell you if the water has been mixed with ingredients used in a potion. If there are any bits floating around in there maybe we can figure out what potion was used.''
She put her eyes to the microscope to scope out the water. After a moment, she decided she'd seen enough. She offered the newbie a chance to take a peek. "Here, Stephanie. Why don't you have a look. Tell me what you see.''

She wanted HER to have a look? Steffie grinned and hopped off the stool she'd been sitting on, wandering over and taking a peek into the microscope. At first it took her a moment to remember how to adjust it and how to focus in on the slide, but then she managed to see a few little particles of...something floating around.
"Hmmm, I think....those are mostly bubbles. OH! But there's a few purple specks in there," she added, focusing in on a few. They looked like...crystals sort of. "I think they might be fragments of something like a potion. Or something that was supposed to dissolve in the water, but didn't," she added. Sort of reminded her of...bath salts?

Megan was quite pleased to see that Stephanie was eager to take part in this. She liked it when the newbies were like that. She stood back and watched the newb do her thing. Stehpanie seemed to know what she was doing and one could call Megan impressed.
"Exactly! I saw the same thing.'' Obviously. With a microscope, who could miss that? "And that's exactly what I think. Now we would just have to take a closer look at what those purple pieces are and find out what they are. Is it aconite, is it the seeds of the Belladonna, is it something else?'' Aconite and belladonna seeds are purple so she was just giving examples. But this might just take a while for them to figure out.
The once quiet laboratory is now punctuated with the eerie sound of symbols colliding. At first, it's not clear where the sound is coming from but there's no ignoring the way it sends cold shivers up your spine.
Clank. Clank. Clank.
There, sitting atop a table near the centre of the room sits the relic that was once safely locked away. How did it get here? Your guess is as good as any. By all indications, it seems to have come out of nowhere. The stone money clanks its instrument at an eerie pace, its eyes glowing a deep shade of red with the colour fading in and out with each chilling clank.

Today, Megan was wide awake because there had been loads of things she needed to get done. She was about a quarter way through her to-do list and getting started on the next task. For this, she needed to make a trip to the Toxicology lab. When the cymbals sounded, Megan stopped dead in her tracks, her eye widening. She didn't need to look into the lab to know what it was because her brain had already dredged up a memory of the thing making the sound.
Despite this, she cautiously approached the lab, wand gripped in her hand. Yeah, there it was... that damn monkey relic she had first encountered in the break room. The heck was it doing there? And its eyes... WHAT? They were glowing red at a measured pace, she realised as she watched them as though mesmerised.
Derek supposedly was here last term/year, but I wasn't so what do I know xD
Arts TRANSPONSTER!
Derek made his way to his lab as usual, glad to finally be able to spend some time in his favourite place. He did deflate a little when he saw that Megan had beat him to it and was standing at the door.
He waited for a few seconds and since she didn't move, he had to speak up. Urgh. "Um, excuse me, I need to get in there." The PART supervisor said, stepping around her and entering the lab. It wasn't her strange behaviour that made him realise something was off - women acted strange all the time, he had learned - but the atmosphere inside of the lab was... different. He could tell.
Pretty much from the centre of the room, the red eyed monkey was 'staring' straight at him, clanking his instrument and sending a shiver down Derek's spine. Not that he was afraid of the artifact per se, but that sight sure looked creepy. "Did you bring this here?" He asked Megan, not entirely sure why he was whispering.
Hm. She looked a bit too freaked out to have brought that in there herself.
Well, it didn't matter who had brought that there, it didn't belong in his lab and it had to go. Derek started to move towards the object, wondering why someone would've brought that there. It was only when he was halfway to the table that he stopped on his tracks. What if... it hadn't been anyone who brought it there?
Maddox did say they shouldn't take the object lightly.
The 41 year-old blinked and watched the monkey play its thing for another few seconds before pulling out his wand and casting a Shield Charm around the thing. There was the time when that exact same lab had been destroyed before and he was willing to... fight, if needed, to not let that happen again. Even if it meant... fighting a stone monkey.
On and on it clanked, not missing a beat even after the man (Derek) cast a shield over it. While it droned on that monotonous melody, it gave no indication it was aware it was now under a shield, that is of course, until it suddenly vanished from the desk and reappeared on the floor just behind the man.
Clank. Clank. Clank.
Red eyes glowed brighter before fading to a dull crimson colour, over and over as if mimicking some pattern. Look into the eyes long enough and they almost seem to be beckoning you closer.
Pick it up. Hold it for just a second. What was the worst that could happen?
Derek took a few steps closer to the monkey, only to stop again when the thing vanished.
He blinked and turned around to see if it had--
FLIPPING flobberworms... >_____>
The man nearly jumped out of his skin when the stone monkey started his clanking right from behind him. There was no way Derek was going to physically touch the artifact - the last thing he needed was to be under some sort of curse that would cause him to destroy his lab with his own hands. No, thanks. Swishing and flicking his wand, he cast a Levitating Charm on it to see if that would help him get rid of it.
At least move it AWAY from HIS lab. It could carry on being the terrible little thing that it was elsewhere. So he tried levitating it towards the door.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Megan gave Derek a look of great scorn. "Please. Do I look stupid. This was the artefact that scared the living daylights out of me months ago.'' Or did he forget about when she and Maddox made the discovery of it? Whatever, she just went back to looking at them monkey, taking no notice of Derek and his spell. There was a feeling of skepticism and uneasiness about her that was brought about by this... thing. She was wondering if she should go find Maddox or if she should try to stop it from clanging those cymbals when...
The blond blinked.
Where did it go?
Megan whipped around. There it was- on the ground behind Derek.
"Is it me or are its eyes glowing even more?'' She stood there transfixed for a moment before taking a step closer. Why was it that she seemed so attracted to the thing? If it was levitated away, the woman would be sure to follow.
The levitation, while successful at moving it toward the door, did very little to stop the ominous clanking and the enticing way it's eyes seemed to glow. With an audience now procured, the eyes flashed with more speed. Pluck it from the air, set it down and let it do its work.
Just as it past the threshold, it busted it up at the hinges, sending the wooden frame toppling to the floor and the door clattering to the floor.
As the last of the sounds faded, the eyes slowed their flashing glow but they became no less enticing.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Megan, without thinking at all, moved as well towards the door and after the artefact. There was something about those eyes that drew here. This hadn't happened on their first encounter though she didn't even realise that now. Those big bright eyes... they were so attractive, so mesmerising. The cymbals' clanging on the other hand, still reverberated loudly in her head.
Oh, look. The eyes were glowing even faster. Megan didn't even blink now. Even as her dominant hand reached to touch the monkey. That touch turned into a pull and Megan was holding it in her hand at the same moment there was a really loud sound. She finally blinked and looking around, was conscious of the fact that the door was falling. Luckily she wasn't in harms way.
The eyes though... not so much glowy and interesting now.
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
What in Merlin's beard....?
It was the sound of the doors being busted off their hinges that drew the man from his office. With hearing as sensitive as his, he was used to hearing all kinds of things. Usually they had some logical explanation behind them. This was Accidents and Catatrophes, disaster was their business and there was a fair bit of experimentation.
That sound though....that didn't sound like something he'd been expecting today. As far as he was concerned, no one got clearance for explosions that day.
"Someone wanna tell me what's going on out here?" He asked, his voice trailing lazily as he sauntered gracefully down the corridor leading to the labs. "It sounds like you lot are trying to rearrange Derek's la--"
o_________________O
Maddox jumped back immediately with a yelp, taken aback both by the fact the relic was out here and that it was in the hands of one of his employees.
"Megan...what are you doing with that monkey???" He hissed, now taking very careful steps forward against his own good judgement. "That bloody thing's nothing but bad news. There's a reason we locked it away. It's not a toy or something to just waltz around the lab wi--what happened to the doors?" Maybe he should have just stopped at "what happened?". Yeah, at this rate he might as well.
And where was Derek? He was sure he could smell him somewhere around here.

Megan still stared at the eyes. Despite them being less glowy, they still held her attention. What broke her gaze was the sudden appearance of Catman aka The Boss. She honestly felt as though she jumped out of her skin when he questioned her.
The blond blinked.
She stared down at the relic and gasped.
"Wha-?'' Without thinking, she quickly dropped it onto the nearest table. Now she looked around at Maddox with wide eyes. "I don't know. It was just here and the eyes started to glow and I felt so compelled to pick it up.'' All of that came pouring out of her mouth very fast. The PART officer gestured at the door. "THAT MONKEY DID SOMETHING!''
She inhaled and exhaled as though she had just come from a run. "FYI, I did NOT bring that thing in here.''
Did she look stupid? "You were the only person in here," was his answer, as he avoided eye contact with her while concentrating on getting rid of the creepy monkey.
Her question regarding the objects' eyes glowing more was ignored as he was indeed trying his best to keep the thing from... causing any more issues around HIS lab - and also because he was purposely not looking straight at the thing's eyes for several reasons.
The dang thing did look creepy and Derek was about to feel slightly relieved it was no longer inside of his lab when the lab's door basically blew up. The Potioneer took a startled step back but managed to keep his wand steady. For no reason, apparently, because Megan thought it would be a good idea to bloody HOLD the stone monkey.
Who had the brilliant idea to hire these mental people?? Why, just WHY wasn't Derek allowed to work on his own? He'd get things done much more efficiently. No one would be holding the blinking monkey and his LAB DOOR WOULDN'T HAVE EXPLODED.
...Only, he couldn't be sure about the last bit, but he wasn't particularly happy at the moment and that monkey was... now being replaced on a table IN HIS LAB.
No.
Derek levitated the thing again and sent it towards the door because it was NOT going to be in his lab if it depended on him. He wasn't stupid enough to actually touch the thing, though...
Megan said she hadn't brought it in. "She was by the door when I got here. And the monkey was in the lab." The man told his boss in a low tone. Was the monkey on its own? He didn't know. Honestly, he was just as surprised as they were, but he was determined to get that thing OUT of there pronto. And what happened to the door? Wasn't it obvious? "It blew up. Where do you want me to take this?" He asked Maddox as he tried levitating the creepy monkey OUT and AWAY from his lab. Again.
He needed to get out of there but not without the last of the data he needed and a sample or two from the lab.
He had been around during the last contamination cleanup and had already made his own recordings of it. The mystery man darted into the lab, aware he was now being chased. He would need to carefully plan his escape. Where was it? Where was it? Where was it?
In his rush, he threw things from the lab tables and shoved things out of the way. He didn’t have time to carefully sift through it all. They would realize he’d headed for the lab any minute now and he would rather be gone by then.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Truth be told, Megan didn’t need the Boss man to give them the go ahead to chase after this mysterious figure. Her instinct just kicked in and soon they were out of the work areas and out onto the corridor. She tossed her head, left then right, her long blond hair flailing everywhere.
“THERE!” She pointed towards the lab where the man had just darted into. Megan hadn’t even noticed if the others were following but assumed they were. She raced to the lab, hearing the ruckus coming from it as she drew closer. Wand drawn, she burst into the lab.

Grayson was working on something very important, thank you very much.
Or, that's what he liked to tell himself when he was stuck in the lab on a mundane day working on something more boring than Meriwether's entire personality.
No offence, dude.
Goggles on and gloves strapped on his hands, the twenty-seven year old knelt down until he was eye-level with a vial he was trying to test out. See, going out on the field was like being in an adventure movie where he'd made things happen and pretend to be some kind of hero or some crap like that. But being in the lab, the only exciting thing that could come out of it was the idea of coming across something so new, maybe so freaking dangerous, that he'd shock even Quigley.
"Careful..... careful......." And the tiniest of drops from his pipette - which was CLEAN because he was taught by Culloden, thank you - went into the sample he was currently testing out. There was a slight pause, one where he didn't even dare to move, and.....

When her sister had shown up early with her nephew in tow and BEGGED Aina to take him for the day, Aina had been half asleep. It wasn't that she didn't like spending time with Flynn, and it had seemed kinda urgent or whatever, but it wasn't until after Ruby had gone and Aina had got up, and showered, and come out to find Flynn sitting in front of the TV in her apartment with a bowl of cereal (wearing a green and black striped sweater over jeans, sneakers and.... a purple tutu) that it clicked that... um... actually... she had things to do today. And COULDN'T take Flynn along to said things. Sorry 'bout it. So she'd gone through the list, and ALL her siblings were busy (and some of them had pointed out that RUBY had already called them and honestly why the heck didn't Ruby come to her FIRST? Insulting). She wasn't going to ring Rubes since that doctor appointment sounded like it was kind of a big deal or whatever, so there was nothing for it but to show up at the Ministry and basically, whoever she came across first out of Gabe or Grayson, would get a Flynn. They both would be there, right? Probably. Should be. Normal work hours and all that.
She SUPPOSED she better start with the kid's father.... if he wasn't there, then to level 2 to find Gabriel. So they took the lift to level 3 with Flynn chattering non-stop about things he knew about the ministry and about how one day HE wanted to work there for DRAGON things but only if he couldn't go and work with Fintan etcetera etcetera.... honestly he really talked too much for it being before midday.
____
"How come YOU don't work here anymore, aunt Aina? Wasn't it cool at the Ministry? It must be cool because dad works here and so does uncle Gabe. How many people do you think come in the lifts every day? What do you think all those memos say? I can fold paper airplanes like those too! But I can't make them fly yet. Can I press the button? Why does it smell funny in here?" Flynn was having a SUPER COOL DAY already today. EVEN THOUGH he wasn't getting to be with Tavie because Tavie was having a special day with her mum and then HIS mum was sick and had to go to the healer and-- the lift dinged! The doors opened and Flynn shot out, unable to avoid skipping somewhat in excitement. He hoped his dad was here!

"Flynn! Slow your roll!" Aina called out after the eight year old. Or was he nine? Wait.... no not yet. NEARLY nine. Crap. That meant she'd have to remind herself to get the kid a birthday present. November wasn't it? In front of her, Flynn skidded to a stop in front of the reception desk.... but it was unattended. Hum.
.... he did potions crap so probably in the lab, right? She grabbed her nephew's hand and led him up the corridor to the lab, knowing where it was from her own stint working at the Ministry.
Hmm. She peeked through the window in the door, was pleased to see Grayson WAS there, and then she knocked, not wanting to just barge in in case he was working with something dangerous.
_____
Flynn couldn't SEE through the window in the door because it was juuust too high for him, but he DID join in with the knocking, making his hands into fists, fists with painted purple fingernails. Knocking meant his dad was in there! He tried a wave at the window, his hand just making it into view, and he waved enthusiastically.
"DAaaaaaaAAAaaaad?!"
