Do people really come to food courts to eat? Well, yeah...sometimes they do. Other times, though, you might just find yourself in need of a good break, and if so, you've found the place! "The Hangout" as it's been nicknamed, is a section of the food court where people simply come to hang out. You'll have the occasional eater here and there, but those with a meal typically stay in the seating area. "The Hangout" is filled with soft, cushiony chairs and couches, perfect for the employee who just needs select employees to rest, relax, and catch up on gossip beneath the watchful gaze of Gellert Grindelwald.

Yes, this was a "hangout" area, but January was most definitely planning on eating there today. She was hoping her new friend would join her as well. The food court got a little crowded and smelled a bit too much like ketchup at times and the seats in the hangout area were much more comfortable... So that's where she was.
January had sent a note to the woman she had met at the orientation picnic in hopes that she would meet her for lunch. Their conversation at the picnic had been cut rather short when she was suddenly targeted by fireworks in the shape of a dragon. Thankfully her aurors were there, but she had to leave rather quickly after that and hadn't gotten a chance to apologize to Mariana (that was her name, wasn't it?) since then. So, the Senior Undersecretary set her homemade lunch down on a side table by a cluster of cushy seats and sat down, hoping her new friend would show up.

Mariana had been meaning to reach out to the Senior Undersecretary, only the woman was the Senior Undersecretary. She knew she must be swamped with things far more important than girl talk and she couldn't quite justify bothering her during work hours. Luckily for her, January was the one who ended up asking for a meetup and the botanist had been looking forward to it all day.
Small floral lunch bag in hand, Mariana moved over to where the other woman was already seated and offered a smile. "Hey. I was really happy to get your note. I've been wondering how you are." No small talk for this one. She still remembered the fireworks so vividly in her mind and it had been scary for her, unused to the dangers of being someone important in the wizarding world. Maybe January had grown more accustomed to these types of things, aurors following her around and all.
Setting her bag down, the brunette took a seat and pulled out her salad, eyes on her companion.

Well, being the Senior Undersecretary meant she was quite busy in the office, but sometimes January needed a little girl talk to break up the work flow. She worked too much sometimes. Too much that it had gotten her in trouble with her family before - missing family events had happened in the past. Needless to say, they weren't missed anymore.
Looking up at the sound of footsteps, January saw Mariana and smiled. Her smile turned a little sheepish when she asked how she was, knowing that it was specifically directed to the incident at the park a few weeks back. Surely by now she had seen the article as well. "I'm fine," she said as a blanket statement as the other woman sat down and got her lunch out.
January crossed her legs. "I'm sorry you were put in danger on the night of your first orientation. That wasn't a very warm welcome." January stirred her pasta salad around in her container, watching the woman. She seemed strong, though. She remembered that she had immediately looked after her to make sure she was okay and January appreciated that.

Fine was a word often used to mask whatever was really going on inside a person, but Mariana simply nodded and offered January a small smile. The brunette honestly hoped she was fine, because she seemed kind and smart and certainly deserving of a threat-free life.
"I was pretty scared, if I'm being honest. It wasn't your fault, though. You didn't make those fireworks do what they did." So there was absolutely no need to apologize. Mariana munched on a cucumber, remembering the moment she realized something was very wrong. Strangely, it seemed like it was so long ago now that she was here at the ministry, absorbed in her work. "I suppose this is something you've had to prepare for? Being in the position you're in and all." The botanist couldn't imagine having to have aurors on call just in case something like that occurred. It seemed such a strange way to live. "How did your family react when they heard?"

Truthfully, January was fine. She knew she and her family were well protected. If anything, she was just slightly irritated that these people hadn't given up yet. The Ministry was in good hands now - couldn't they tell the difference?
And no, it wasn't her fault, but she still felt bad for the whole incident and was incredibly grateful that no one had gotten hurt. She just wanted to find an end to this all before someone did. So, she gave an appreciative smile to her new friend. As for her next comment... January shrugged slightly. "Actually... no? Or I suppose I was never told to..." It was interesting, really. "I was rather under-qualified, in my opinion, when I was hired. I was a division head in Creatures, and suddenly I was the Minister's Senior Undersecretary. Unfortunately, he didn't even understand the depth of his own position, so I didn't really understand mine. That is, until... things couldn't go on any longer." That was when the impeachment finally happened.
"So, perhaps if I had been hired by a more... legitimate Minister, I would have had more training, but if that were the case, I probably wouldn't have been chased by a dragon." So, yeah... Interesting.
As for her family, they were, unfortunately, getting used to it. "They're always a bit on edge, but they're well looked after too." January was calm about all of it at this point, but she was always a bit tense now. Always looking over her shoulder. Always cautious.

"Sounds complicated." Stressful, too. She couldn't imagine taking on a job like that without proper training and the fact that January had, and that she seemed well respected and suited for the position, was impressive.
"Silver lining then, knowing they're safe." She offered a smile before taking a sip of the flavored water she'd taken from her lunch bag. "Has it been easier with the new minister? He seems great. Enthusiastic, which is something I really enjoy in leadership. Passion is important."

Yassi preferred eating in this section of the Food Court. Not because it was any emptier, but because the layout itself felt far more comforting. The tables were quite stuff and they made her feel as if she were in a classroom. Not that she minded, but her days were typically spent in classrooms and she did enjoy a change from time to time. It helped her unwind, you see. Besides, those who sat here were often times more open to free flowing conversation.
There was only so much time one could spend speaking about the weather.
And so with her reusable tupperware in hand, Yassi made her way over to the couches. Today she had packed herself a colorful salad, topped off with chickpeas and lemon dressing. She also had hummus and pita chips, but that was for sharing. With who? Only time would tell.
She absently ran a hand through her hair, as she set her little box down on the couch and adjusted her mid-length, floral skirt. Florals? In Spring? Groundbreaking!

A very preoccupied Quentin entered the scene. His shirt sleeves were rolled up to the elbow, concealing the bit of dirt he had somehow managed to get on his cuffs, and in his large, calloused hands he held several reports. Most of them concerning soil, the rest concerning the impossible stories floating around England of a 'massive fungi invasion'. Those last ones were not exactly part of a Bontanist's job description, but Q liked to think his title was something more of a guideline than an enforced rule.
Pulling at his tie, the young man settled himself down in the comfiest seat he could find, unaware that the occupant opposite him had been eager for some time alone. Q cleared his throat before a cough could properly make its way out of his throat, and began the mind-numbing task of highlighting! bits! of! text!

The cushiony couch had sunk down a lot further than Yassi had anticipated it would, giving her a slight surprise as the cushions enveloped her. The whole debacle caused a smile to dance on her lips as she shook her head at herself. Oh, how embarrassing! Fortunately her salad was safe and so was her hummus, arguably the most important element to the meal. She began to hum to herself quietly as she ate her salad with poise (though eating salad whilst being poised was quite a feat), looking up every now and again to see whether or not others would join her.
Perhaps it was her own fault that she hadn't gathered a crowd. It was quite an unusual time to eat lunch, but she hadn't been hungry at the usual hour. No matter, she didn't mind the quiet. It meant there was more time to-- Oh.
She looked up to greet the preoccupied botanist with a warm, welcoming smile but it seemed as though he was far too immersed in his work. His hands looked just as tired as his eyes, but it was the way that he pulled at his tie that warranted her intrigue. Was he stressed out about something?
Though she had been debating over it for a few moments, the brunette held the hummus out towards him with one hand and the box of pita chips with the other. "Hummus?" He looked like he could use a break.

Conley had needed to escape from his office and from work for a few minutes. Seeking a hiding place where nobody would think to find him, he landed on the food court, figuring it was the last place someone would look for him. After all, Conley often forgot to eat so a place that served food seemed the last place someone would look for him. So, after stopping for a cup of tea, Conley had found an empty sofa and made himself comfortable as he shuffled through some pamphlets and forms that were not work related, but to someone else, might seem so as they dealt with citizenship and other legally-looking information.

David did not eat at the food court, nor purchase food here, but he did like to meet his lunch buddy in this area at lunch time. So, in a sense, he did go to the food court...? Just not for food.
Today it seemed that everyone had taken their lunch hour at the same time. David stood near a red sofa, one hand in his pocket, and looking around for Jessica. She hadn't appeared yet so he decided to just sit down next to a man shuffling through some files.
"This seat isn't occupied, is it?" he inquired politely. Just in case. He COULD move if it was.

Conley was a bit overwhelmed and yet extremely excited by the information he was currently reading. It was a nice change to not have to read reports on cauldron thicknesses, market analyses, or reports on what was wrong throughout the wizarding world. Although, in a way, it was a bit disheartening to find out just how many orphanages there were in the world. Still...he was excited to start this journey with his husband. "Hmmm?" he asked looking up from a particularly colorful pamphlet on an orphanage outside of New Delhi. "Oh no...not taken. Please," he waved for the man to sit, then realize he had tosses a few pamphlets around and quickly gathered them up.

"Thank you."
David sank into the couch, gently pushing the few extra pamphlets and papers and whatnot toward the other man. He DID notice what they were regarding, and blinked a few times as the word ORPHANAGE jumped out to him.
But who was he to pry? He would never stick his nose into another person's business. He would, however, let the man know that he had seen the adoption pamphlets in a kind way....
"Planning a trip to India, then?" Perfect. Even his tone managed to sound disinterested.

Preoccupied with collecting his pamphlets and paperwork it took Conley a moment to respond. "Well, I own property there." Actually, his husband did, which meant he did right? Hmmm...he should really asked Sachin about that sometime. So a trip?"So not really, but, oh...you mean?" He held up one of the pamphlets. Some people might have been embarrassed or felt like spied upon, but not Conley. He was actually very excited about his future plans. Unlike his husband who seemed a bit reserved (to put it nicely) about it. "I am." He beamed proudly.

David adjusted his jacket slightly as he sat down. He was about to zone out and start thinking about potions ingredients but then... the guy was talking to him, quite happily it seemed, so he supposed he could reply. "Oh." He was rich, then?
Yes, David nodded toward the pamphlet. "Congratulations," he replied promptly. Now the man seemed REALLY pleased, and since he'd directly held up a paper that said ADOPTION on it, David supposed he could be more forward. "That's... quite an undertaking."
So really, again, congratulations on choosing to become a parent. It certainly wasn't a suitable job for everyone.

Rich? No, Conley wasn't rich. Well off maybe, but more like he worked hard for what he had and didn't splurge willy-nilly on things. So, perhaps it was a good thing that he didn't mention he owned a home in London too. "Thank you," he said earnestly. His excitement and eagerness, surely was evident on his face and in his voice. He only wished Sachin was this excited. In fact, he had the feeling that the young man who had joined him might echo his husband's own reservations. "It is. Raising children isn't easy or for everyone." Pause. "But it's so rewarding. Or that's what everyone says." He's soon find out himself it seemed. He just really didn't want to miss out on this part of life again.
Still, Conley wasn't so entirely wrapped up in his own things to not have noticed the younger man appeared to have something on his mind. He folded up his papers and tucked them all together. "Having a good day?" he asked.
Professor Pink | Mrs. Bruce Wayne | I'm on a Goat | Glitterpuff | Dumbledore's Defense Squad | BHB
Mmm, that David could agree with. "It's...great that you're giving a child a home," he mumbled in an attempt to be kind. He didn't know much about children, raising children, or parenting. He, like many others, just had uninformed opinions based on his own experiences.
He let out a small sigh and cast his eyes around, looking for his friend. Oh. The guy had asked him something? "It's fine," he answered quietly. He wasn't supposed to talk about work. But, he had to say, he was no closer to finding out what had happened to him on the day he'd fallen asleep at work... not that he'd ever tell a random employee this.
"I'm just waiting for my gi-- er, uh, my friend. Jessica." David's cheeks turned a bit pink with this near slip-up. "We try to eat lunch together every day."

Conley blinked. Honestly? He hadn't thought about it like that. Giving a child a home? Mmm...he should really use that on Sachin. After all, his husband had been adopted. Now that the idea had been pointed out to him, he was surprised Sachin hadn't been the one to make that point. "Thanks," he said blushing. "I've always wanted to be a dad. Thought I would miss out on the opportunity." He had, after all, been widowed at a young age and never had thought he'd fall in love again or be in a place in his life where he felt confident enough to take care of another's life.
The sigh didn't go unnoticed. Perhaps Conley was being annoying. Still, the man had asked to join him so...the department head soldiered on with the conversation. "That's a lovely habit to have. Lunch with someone." He often ate alone - when he remembered to do so. He wished he had a lunch buddy. Sadly, Conley didn't have anyone he was that close with at work. Well, unless you counted his husband, which, well, he couldn't because they had an agreement to remain professional while at work. "I'm lucky if I remember my lunch 80% of the time." He chuckled.
Professor Pink | Mrs. Bruce Wayne | I'm on a Goat | Glitterpuff | Dumbledore's Defense Squad | BHB
So he was one of the ones who was cut out for it, it seemed. "Why would you miss out on the opportunity?" He inquired politely, curious now because of that statement. It was very... decisive.
The guy was not annoying David. If anything, he was annoyed with himself for being so desperate to escape the Department of Mysteries that it seemed he'd taken his lunch hour too early. "It is. A new habit, but a nice one." And he really could thank Jessica for agreeing to be his lunch buddy. Oh? "Which department do you work in?" Obviously he had to find out what this busy man did to forget his lunch time. David had been that dedicated once, back before... er, the accident, he supposed he could call it. Now he had an aversion to the Death Chamber... and the Chamber of Codes... and the whole floor, really...

Ha! Conley might have flushed a little at the question. How exactly did you explain to a complete stranger that your wife died from complications with Dragon Pox a few years after you got married causing you to throw yourself into work consequently leaving you lonely for so many years you’d never thought you’d find love again? ”Well,” he said spinning the wedding ring on his left hand. ”My wife died young.” There that wasn’t too depressing sounding was it? No need to distress anyone else’s day with his somber personal history. Still, his stomach did a little flip-flop-dip like it always did when he thought about Elodie. ”I recently remarried, but it’s not like my husband and I can exactly, you know…” He rolled his hand to emphasis his point. And yes, he said husband without a hint of hesitation or embarrassment.
”International Magical Cooperation,” he answered, unsurprised that the young man had no idea he was a department head. It seemed many of the workers here didn’t know anything about his department, unless they were here working on a VISA that was. He had an inclining that the young man worked on Level 9, merely from the fact that the man had been dismissive and vague regarding Conley’s question about how his day was going. He’d been around the ministry long enough to catch on to how a lot of Unspeakables redirected questions about their work. Still, the young man seemed a little distressed. ”Name’s Conley, by the way. Does your lunch mate work on Level 9 too?”
Professor Pink | Mrs. Bruce Wayne | I'm on a Goat | Glitterpuff | Dumbledore's Defense Squad | BHB
Oh... well, that was depressing. David blinked a few times as he took in Conley's.... honesty? Not everyone would just tell a stranger these personal details, especially not such depressing ones. "I see," he replied simply. This story just seemed to illustrate the adage that where there's a will, there's a way. Some people were simply determined to have a family one way or another.
David's eyes narrowed slightly as Conley, was it, immediately figured out his floor. "I--- no, she does not," he answered quietly, studying the man for a moment as though realizing where he had seen him before. The Greenhouses, maybe? At the new employees... function? "You're the head of International Magical Cooperation." It dawned on him now. "So you must know Jessica Tomás--- she's my lunch buddy."
And his name was David, but he waited to see if the man would somehow already know that too. (And he would be greatly disturbed if he did.)

Ah, perhaps he has shared too much? If he had, he wasn't sorry. Conley was an honest person and the man had asked. He certainly could have explained a lot more, but then the man would have become more uncomfortable. As for being determined to be a father? Yes he was! The only way he would have given up the dream was if his husband really hadn't wanted children. Thankfully, that wasn't the case with Sachin.
And speaking of being uncomfortable? Apparently Conley's deduction had been correct and had taken the man off guard. "Interesting floor, Level 9," he said with a sly smile. No worries there mate, Conley wasn't going to ask anything invasive. He'd been down there a few times to visit with Airey, but he hadn't really been anywhere else of interest. "That I am. Conley," he offered up a hand for the man to shake. "Jessica's a lovely person. Good worker." Conley was the type of boss who loved it when his employees needed little supervision. In his mind, it meant they were doing their jobs properly.

Was he trying to trick David into discussing the Department of Mysteries?! If so, the trick wouldn't work. Nope, he wouldn't fall for that. His lips were sealed. Unless... unless... unless Jessica had been talking about him and his bad day he'd had recently? David found himself rubbing the back of his head, where he still had a small lump.
"David," he offered his name, and his hand, reluctantly shaking Conley's. "She's wonderful," he agreed, hesitating before he adding, "She didn't tell you I work on that floor, did she?" He was so nervous to ask but he had to know. Had to know she was trustworthy. Had to know that HE was trustworthy, that he hadn't knocked all sense out of his brain when he'd fallen down on the job that day.

He gave the young man’s hand single firm shake and then let go. ”No,” he said with a dismissive hand motion. He had the feeling he had made David uncomfortable. ”Not at all. I’ve just been around the Ministry a while. Meet enough unspeakables to know when I stumble across one.” He shrugged. It was something in their mannerisms. If Winnie were here, she’d be telling him she was sensing a “guarded” or “dark” aura. Sometimes he wished he had his cousin’s abilities. It would sure make his job easier. Still, the man’s question made him wonder if he really was alright. And no, he hadn’t missed the young man’s rub to the head. It hadn’t seemed like a normal personality quirk. There had been too many oddities in the Ministry in the past few years and perhaps Conley’s intuition was still on high alert despite the Roller Trial being old hat, but still…
He sat up straighter, this time trying to offer both a comforting and open demeanor. ”You sure you’re alright?” he asked gently. ”If you can’t discuss it with me, you could always make an appointment with Airey. The man’s a bit of a hypochondriac, but despite hit neurotic tendencies, he’s quite easy to talk to.” Pause. ”Just don’t mess with his pet rocks.”
