Then came the point when Ron and Lavender broke up. To this, Hermione found herself elated and disloyal at the same time. She knew she was leaving Harry in the ditch by pursuing Ron. What could she do?
While Harry was having yet another meeting with Dumbledore, Hermione and Ron reclined in the common room beside the roaring fire.
“I can’t say I’m sad that you and Lavender split,” Hermione commented, idly picking at her quill. Now that Ron was Lavender-free, she felt more at a liberty to express her thoughts without winding out of control. “There was nothing to your relationship whatsoever, except snogging.”
Ron nodded dumbly, staring into the embers of the fire. “Or are you happy because now I’m single?” he teased, grinning cheekily at her.
She rolled her eyes. “You wish, Ronald.”
“Well, yes, I do.”
He was getting that funny look on his face again. He got up and bent over where Hermione sat across from him on the worn sofa. “Are you sure that’s not the reason, ‘Mione?” he asked softly, eyes looking directly into hers. He wanted her so bad, and he knew she wanted him; that one night in the hospital wing proved it. There was no doubt in his mind now, which made him extremely confident.
“I—I…” she stuttered, avoiding his stare.
Ron stayed in his position. “Just admit it, Hermione. You love me.” He almost laughed at the absurdity of it all.
“Ha! I wouldn’t say anything that extreme, Ronald,” Hermione retorted, reddening.
Without waiting to reply, he just bent down lower and kissed her lightly and quickly. It was thoroughly sweet, and even better, pure. Straightening up to his lanky height, Ron grinned. “See, I told you.”
Hermione laughed a bit giddily and stood up to face him. “You’re right, Ron,” she admitted frankly. And slowly, she stroked his flaming hair and touched her lips to his.

“What do you think you’re doing, Hermione? What are you playing at?” Harry shouted angrily the next day.
Hermione’s face was streaked with tears again. “I don’t know what I’m doing, Harry! I just don’t know what to do anymore.”
“Well, then don’t go kissing me then Ron then alternating between us both. Choose one of us or none of us, Hermione. Where’d your sense go?” he demanded, breath ragged. He couldn’t believe what she was making herself out to be. At this rate, the trio would be split up in three different continents.
“I don’t know, Harry, I told you!” she shrieked, burying her face in her hands. “I’m trying, okay? Just give me time!” Her cries wracked her whole body and it looked so frail that Harry softened a bit.
“Okay, fine. But think quick, Hermione. I don’t want to be waiting on edge forever.”
