Before we entered the house my expression was grim. It was falling apart, and the curb appeal was horrible. I pointed this out to James.

“It’s not like the Muggles care,” he said stiffly, obviously not forgetting that I’d turned him down. “Only wizards can see it.”

“And don’t you know how many wizards live in this community?”

He raised his eyebrows. “No.”

“You of all people should know this,” I said as we approached the front door. “In the mid-1300’s, Bowman Wright, the inventor of the Golden Snitch, lived here!”

“Yeah,” he said sarcastically, pushing the door open. “Because he is just so alive today.”

I glared at him and followed the two inside. Remus jogged to the other side of the house where he sat in front of the warm fire.

“Don’t expect him to always be so nice,” James whispered. “I’m surprised he let you hug him. He knows what’s going on but sometimes he still has his moments to where he’s not so fun to be around.”

“How much longer does he have to be like that?”

“Three more days, and if you know what’s best for you, you won’t talk about it like it’s a problem. Remus has accepted it and that’s that.”

I looked down at the floor. “Where’s my room?”

“Upstairs, first door on the right.”

I ran up there, trying to get away from James, and felt tears in my eyes.

urgh... my brother took FOREVER to get to stay in bed!! well i'm FINALLY here [though no one else seems to be] & I'm posting!

I know that he had a right to be mad. I’d just told him that, yes, I liked him, and then rejected him to his face. What was wrong with me? Why didn’t I want to kiss him?

These thoughts kept interrupting my nap I was trying to have. Finally, when I heard “dinner’s ready,” being called up the stairs, I woke up, but I didn’t move.

It was funny; for a split second I thought I was back at my house and that was my father calling towards me. When I realized that I was wrong, I rolled over to face the other way.

I heard footsteps coming up the stairs, and then my door opened, and I ignored the whispers of, “Lily, Lily, come on, wake up,” until James sat on my bed.

I felt myself crying again and I tried to hide it.

“What’s wrong?”

I ignored him.

“Come on,” he said softly. “I know you’re not asleep. Stop crying and look at me. Talk to me. What’s wrong?”

I rolled to face him. I could see his out line and the moon shone across his face.

“You… you hate me now.”

He smiled. “I could never hate you… It just… it hurt, you know? I finally, finally, thought that I had a chance with you, after seven years of waiting. But if that’s not what you want, then that’s okay. I don’t want to loose you as a friend, since we’ve never really been that, either.”

I cried a little harder and he brushed the hair out of my eyes. “Shh, I don’t hate you, I promise. I understand that this isn’t want you want.”

“But… but James,” I said, sitting up a little. “This is what I want.”

I leaned forward, and not at all sure of what I was doing, kissed him. I could tell that he was shocked at first, but then he kissed back. I was going crazy; it felt like I was spinning above the clouds and the wind was rushing all around.

Remus howled in the background.

Despite the delicious smells coming up the stairs, I promised James that I wasn’t hungry. He then decided that he wasn’t, either.

That’s how I found myself wrapped in James’s arms, listening to his soft breathing.

I rolled to face him and propped my head up on one arm. “Why?”

He stroked my hair back. “Hmm?”

“Why do you like me? I mean, after all those times I turned you down, insulted you to your face, and embarrassed you very publicly, you still liked me… why?”

“Hmm… Well, I guess the chase was a lot of it…” he sighed, and looked me in the eyes. “But there’s just so much more to you. I loved it when you’d yell at me and your hair would get everywhere… and I’d love it when you’d turn me down but later on I’d hear you talking about how cute I am in the Common Room…”

“Uh!” I laughed, and pushed him.

He smiled, and then continued. “But, for real? I don’t know. There’s just something about you Lily; something about you that no one else has.”

I kissed him gently on the cheek. “How long do you think we’ll be here for?”

“Probably another month at least…” he replied, biting his lip. “We’ve got to be able to test your version of the potion on Remus...”

“Think you can put up with me that long?”

James grinned, and then kissed me again. “It would be torture not to.”
