The week passed by quickly and I was glad that Seventh Years could visit Hogsmade freely on the weekends. After throwing a scarf around my neck, I called to Marie. “Ready?”

“Yes…” she said, coming out of the bathroom. “I had to brush my hair. So, you’re going to meet James, right?”

“No.” I said shortly, heading down the stairs.

“You’ve got to give him a chance sometime.”

“No, I don’t.”

“Do.”

“Don’t.”

“Want to fight me over it?” Marie laughed, putting up her fists.

“Yes, she does,” Sirius winked from across the room. “But only as long as I can watch.”

I laughed. “Hey, you want to have a drink with us?”

“Sure,” he smiled, not taking his eyes off of Marie. “OY! PRONGS! We’re heading out, you coming?”

“No, he’s not!” I hissed through gritted teeth.

“Actually, yes, I am,” James grinned from the boy’s stairs. His hair was messy and in his eyes, but his black sweater made him look more adult. I shook off the thought and said, “fine, but you’re not sitting next to me.”

How wrong I was.

Marie was supposedly ‘freezing’ and just ‘had to have somebody to keep her warm.’ I told her I’d give her my cloak but she argued that she’d be much more content lying in Sirius’s arms.

“Thanks a lot,” I said sarcastically as James slid in next to me.

“You’re welcome.”

So my day went on, Sirius and Marie on the verge of making me sick, and James talking non-stop about Quidditch. I sipped my butterbeer and zoned out, instead wondering what the sorting Hat had meant.

Could our times ahead really be hard? And if so, what was going to happen? There had been some funny stories in the newspaper… But that was just coincidence, right?

“What do you think, Evans?” James asked, looking at me. “Hello, Evans? Are you in there?”

I jumped, realizing that he was talking to me. “I have a first name, you know.” I snapped, mad that he’d interrupted my thoughts. I’d felt like I was on the verge of something.

“Well sorry.” He said, trying but not succeeding on keeping the anger out of his voice. “I just figured that for once, you know, you might actually like to socialize with the rest of us.”

He stood up, glaring at me, and left the bar, the door slamming behind him.

“Great, just great.” I muttered under my breath. “What do I do now? What was he even talking about?”

“Our plans after school… he wanted your opinion on him becoming an Auror. Said he’d never told anyone else before us that that’s what he wanted to be.”

“Just great!” I cried, guilt ripping at my stomach. I grabbed my cloak, and realized that James had left his. Picking it up, I said, “I’ll see you guys later.”

I rushed out the door to barely see James turn the corner, heading towards the Shrieking Shack. I ran after him and finally found him ten minutes later, leaning up against the rusty white gate.

“Here,” I said softly, handing him his cloak. He snatched it from me and walked away.

“James, wait! James!” I called after him, and finally reached his side once more. “Listen, I’m sorry I hadn’t paid much attention… but I think it’s a great idea to become an Auror, I really do!”

He stopped, turned, and glowered at me something fierce. “I’d never told anyone that before, and I decided to give you a chance and ask your opinion. Instead of getting a shocked look, a ‘congratulations!’, or anything of the sort, you snap at me. You know what? I’m really sorry that I’ve liked you for so long. You’re not even worth it.”

And he left me standing there, my mouth wide open and my mind racing with shock.

Yeah it's 9:27. You're smart. Wait, do you go to night school or something? You said you have to go to school... I wish it it were only six o'clock. I don't want to get up in a few hours for school... *groan*

Sunday morning I refused to climb out of bed. Marie tried to make the thought appealing but when she left the room I couldn’t help but to cry. I felt so horrible; how could I be so insensitive.

I knew, to an extent, that I shouldn’t care. After all, he wouldn’t grasp the idea that I had more than a last name so why should I care about his future?

No matter how much I argued with myself, I couldn’t make the guilt evaporate. Then, I wondered if he’d done it on purpose. Was this just a clever scheme to make me feel sorry for him? I shoved that though to the back of my mind, too. That was just stupid.

I didn’t know what to do with myself. Half of me wanted to lie in bed for the rest of my life, eating chocolates and the other half knew that I needed to take a shower and face the consequences.

I decided to be the better part of me and I climber out of bed. As I stood in the shower, I wondered why this bothered me so much. For the majority of the last six or seven years I’d been trying to get James off my back, but know that it had happened I felt miserable.

After deciding that I just needed to rid myself of all emotions, I went down to the Common Room where a few people were sitting around, reading, chatting, and huddling by the fire. Marie was over in the corner, whispering to Sirius.
I coughed to announce my arrival.

“Oh!” Marie said, surprised but oddly relieved to see me. “Good morning… it’s only three in the afternoon. You okay, then?”

“Yes, who ever said anything was wrong?” I asked stiffly.

Sirius and Marie shared knowing looks.

“Well, as I was saying,” Sirius said softly. “James has spent all day at the flying pitch. I went down there once and…”

I made up an excuse that I was hungry and that I’d see them later, and they shared another look. I wanted to slap Marie but hag her all the same.

The grounds were deserted, most likely due to the chilly weather and fierce approaching winds. I climber up the steps and sat in the middle, seeing James instantly.

He was racing over the field, oblivious to anything else. Only after a minute did I realize he was chasing the Snitch in a high-speed race. He was only an inch from his broom and his face showed anger and irritation. His fingers grasped around the flying ball tightly and he slowed down.

“Ha, still got you,” he said, rubbing the Snitch thoughtfully.

“Good catch,” I called.

He jumped, looked at me, and then sped away.

“James, wait! JAMES!” he wouldn’t listen to me, so I grabbed the broom I’d brought up with me and nervously climbed on. I’d always been afraid to fly for my whole life and I wasn’t prepared to face that fear now. Desperate times call for desperate measures, I thought and kicked off.

My hands were trembling and I called his name again. He slowed down, not seeing me, and looked around. I came up behind him, wobbling dangerously.

His shocked face met mine as he turned around. “You-you hate to fly.”

“Yeah, a little,” I replied, trying not to look down. “I hate having you mad at me more.”

“What’s it to you?” he said angrily, as if this conversation were taking place on the ground instead of fifty feet in the air.

I tried to tighten my grip but only succeeded in scaring myself for. If James had noticed, he didn’t show it.

“Listen, I’m really sorry for spacing out on you yesterday. I just had a lot on my mind. I know I may be a pain sometimes-” I said and he grunted in agreement. “-But you’ve still always been a good friend, no matter how arrogant you are.”

“Great, was that a compliment or an insult?”

I didn’t have time to answer. I don’t know what was shaking-the broom, or me- but I lost my grip and slid off.

Cold air was rushing around me and I’d thought that I’d hit the ground but I wasn’t sure. Before I could decide everything went black.

Haha, yay, you're excited. I'm soo happy on where this fan fiction is going that I actually scribbled down some more in class today... I love it when ideas come to me like that. & I'm staying home tomorrow 'cause I don't feel good so I should get a lot of writing in then, too!

I just took the test ot get sorted... man, I'm nervous about the House that they'll give me. I woke up to a blurry haze of people standing over me.

“She just passed out; she’s fine,” a voiced hissed from across the room. I sat up to see Marie closing the door on a bunch of curious Third Year’s faces.

The people around me ended up being Sirius, Remus, and Madam Pomfrey.

“Hey,” I said groggily. “What…what happened?”

“Well, you’re apparently deathly afraid of flying,” Madam Pomfrey said, bustling across the room and obviously satisfied that I was awake. “You passed out.”

“Did I hit the ground?” I asked, checking for bruises.

“No, James caught you,” Remus said, nodding to James, who was sitting in the corner, staring away from my curious gaze.

“Here, dear, drink this.” Madam Pomfrey instructed, handing her a glass. “It’s Pepper Up Potion… I know it’s for colds but it should sort out your nausea and disoriented feelings quickly. If you’re feeling well you can return to your classes tomorrow but I insist that you stay in here over night so I can watch over you.”

I nodded my head and sipped the fiery potion.

Marie, Sirius, and Remus left the room in a muffled but obvious conversation to leave James and I alone.

He approached my side and sat down.

“You missed all of your classes today, so I brought you the work. I know you don’t like to be behind.”

“I was out for a whole day?” I gasped.

“Yeah,” he nodded. “Madam Pomfrey says that normally happens when someone is not only anxious but troubled.”

I raised my eyebrows. “Well thanks… well… how’re you?”

“A little tired. These seats aren’t comfortable.”

“What? You… you slept here?”

“Yeah, if you want to call it sleeping.”

“For how long?”

“The night… and I checked on you during classes.”

“Why?”

“I was… I was afraid that if I didn’t talk to you and explain some things, you’d hate me.”

“James, I’d never hate you.”

“Then why don’t you like me?”

Our faces were inches apart.

“I never said that I didn’t like you, either.” I replied softly.

He leaned in, but just before he could kiss me Madam Pomfrey bustled into the room. “All right, I let you stay for one night, but it really is time for you to be leaving. Miss Evans needs her time to rest.”

James looked at me longingly and left the room.
