“Ruthie, do you want to talk about it?” Emily asked softly as she climbed up the tree in their backyard and sat beside Ruthie.
It was Christmas holidays and Ruthie spent most of it in stress.
“I don’t know, Mum,” she whispered. Emily wrapped an arm around her shoulder.
“You can tell me anything, sweetie,” Emily said softly.
“I feel like the odd one out in this family,” Ruthie whispered. Emily sighed quietly—she had waited for this day.
“You shouldn’t,” Emily said quietly.
“I’m the only one without someone else, Mum… Amelia and Sirius, Remus and Fred, Emma and Geoffrey, they each have each other. I have no one,” she huffed.
“Correction, you have us all,” Emily said as she squeezed her shoulder. “You may not be a twin, but we all love you. This family isn’t complete without you, never forget that,” Emily said.
Ruthie shrugged indifferently. “It’s just that, I wish I had someone to tell my secrets to,” she whispered.
“I’m always here,” Emily reminded her.
Ruthie rolled her eyes. “I can’t tell you, you’re my mother,” Ruthie said in a matter of fact tone. Emily laughed lightly.
“What about Leslie?” Emily asked.
“It’s not the same as having another half,” Ruthie said quietly. Emily understood what she meant. She was always alone growing up. She had Remus, but she didn’t have a sibling. Unfortunately, Ruthie got her side of the genes on that one. All of her other children got George’s genes, being twins. The thought made her think of Fred, her late brother-in-law.
Emily never really had another half until she met George. She and Remus were more like thirds, where one of the thirds was missing. George was her other half, and Emily felt sad for her daughter, who didn’t have anyone like that.
“Ruthie,” Emily said quietly.
“I met someone,” Ruthie whispered, interrupting Emily. Ruthie blushed a deep shade of red as she looked off into the distance.
Ruthie shrugged her shoulders, making a face of frustration. Emily knew that look. “Who is it?” Emily asked. No answer. “Ruthie, I promise not to be biased like your father would be,” Emily promised. Ruthie sighed in relief.
“Promise?” Ruthie asked. Emily nodded. “His name is Scorpius,” Ruthie whispered. Ruthie heard her mother’s sharp intake of breath and peeked at her expression. Emily looked calm, though inside, she couldn’t help but let her old memories of Scorpius Malfoy’s father flood her mind. She felt woozy from the flashbacks.
“Mum?” Ruthie asked cautiously.
“Are you dating?” Emily asked quietly. Ruthie nodded slowly, measuring her mother’s response. “How long have you been dating?” Emily asked subtly.
Ruthie hesitated and Emily glanced at her. “Well, we’ve been dating for three years, Mum,” Ruthie whispered, refusing to meet her Mother’s eyes.
Emily gasped loudly. “And you’re just now telling us?” she asked incredulously.
Ruthie nodded. “We didn’t know how to tell you guys,” she pleaded. “I’m sorry, Mum,” she said. Emily nodded vaguely as she thought about the past three years.
“Is Scorpius telling Draco?” Emily asked quietly. Ruthie nodded. “Do you like him a lot, Ruth?”
“I don’t like him, Mum… I’m in love with him,” she whispered. Emily nodded, thinking it through.
“I trust you and I trust your decisions… Why don’t we go tell your father?”
“Do we have to?” Ruthie groaned. Emily chuckled, tugging on her hand as she jumped down from the tree.
“I promise it will be fine,” Emily soothed with a chuckle.
They made their way into the little cottage, the smell of lasagna and turkey filling their nostrils. Emily could hear Emma, Geoffrey, Fred, and Remus in the living room, watching T.V. She glanced around the small kitchen and then held up a finger to Ruthie. Ruthie waited at the table while Emily went upstairs to find her husband. Before bothering him, she looked up at the ceiling.
Please was all she thought as she directed it to her godfather and father. They would know she was asking for help if they had been watching.
“Georgie?” Emily asked hesitantly from the doorway of their bedroom.
“Yes, love?” he replied as he peeked out from behind the closet door.
“There’s something Ruthie would like to tell you,” Emily said quietly. George narrowed his eyes, a frown forming on his face.
“What is it?” he asked suspiciously. Emily shook her head, giving him no hint.
“Just keep in mind that things have changed since our time at school, okay?” Emily asked. George narrowed his eyes even more, but nodded. “She’s waiting in the kitchen,” Emily said hesitantly. George stalked out of the bedroom, grabbing Emily’s hand as he passed to lead her to the kitchen.
“What’s going on, Ruthie?” George demanded as he sat down at the kitchen table. Emily and Ruthie gulped. “Are you pregnant?” he growled at her, his face tormented in anger.
“What? No!” Ruthie yelled in shock. They heard the living room T.V. being muted.
I thought I'd leave it there Let me know what you think

Hello Emily. You do so well with moving your story along without shocking the readers. (Me anyway) I love the opening scene and the dialogue between mother and daughter. I love showing Emily's flashbacks and the feelings that came to her mind. I love the effects of the flashbacks that she had. You show how real a person is by doing that. I love Ruthie's response to Emily when she told her she could tell her anything.

Very typical response, but the way you didn't have Ruthie be a smart alec about it was precious. It was just a remark made with honest emotion.
I'm not proud of George however. What gives him the right to make that the question to ask her. He should have just stuck with, "What's going on Ruthie?" if he had to ask her something. And he could have had a better attitude asking her also. I wonder how long Ruthie will stay there without running out in tears. And I don't blame her for being hurt and angry. I don't feel envious of Emily now that she has to try and convense Ruthie that telling her was the right thing to do. George sure flubbed up this time.
Great post Emily. I'll be watching for your next.

“George, please don’t jump to conclusions. Let her speak,” Emily said firmly. George calmed down only slightly and stared at his daughter with an expectant look.
“Daddy, I, er, I’ve been dating this guy…” Ruthie said quietly. She glanced at her mother desperately.
“You’re dating someone?” he demanded. Ruthie nodded slowly. “Who?” he asked. Ruthie gulped, knowing he was about to explode.
“Well, er, don’t flip out, Daddy… I’m dating Scorpius… Malfoy,” Ruthie whispered.
George stared at her, his jaw dropping slightly. Emily grabbed his hand and squeezed it tightly, trying to remind him. Everyone was silent, waiting for his reaction.
“MALFOY?” he finally shouted, pushing back from the table. The chair clambered to the ground and Emily and Ruthie flinched.
“George, please, you don’t even know him,” Emily tried to reason. George wasn’t hearing it.
“I FORBID YOU TO EVER SEE HIM AGAIN, RUTHIE GINERVA WEASLEY! IS THAT UNDERSTOOD?” he yelled. Ruthie stared at him in shocked horror.
“I forbid you to forbid her!” Emily yelled back at him. He glared at her as if it were her fault.
“A Malfoy, Emily, a Malfoy,” George shouted.
“I heard her the first time, thank you,” Emily replied coldly. She turned to Ruthie. “Why don’t you go wash up for dinner? Teddy, Amelia, and Sirius should be here soon.” Ruthie nodded, but then hesitated.
“I invited them for dinner,” she whispered. Emily nodded once and then motioned with her chin to leave the room.
“That goes for you guys, too,” she yelled toward the living room. All of the kids sluggishly made their way upstairs.
I thought I said please, she thought as she looked at the ceiling again. This was probably one of their little jokes, thinking it’s funny to watch. This is not some sitcom, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin! she thought angrily before turning to her husband.
“George Weasley, what on earth is wrong with you?” Emily asked angrily as she picked up the chair.
“What is wrong with me? What is wrong with her? He’s a Malfoy, Emily!” George said as his fist pounded the kitchen counter top.
“Cut it out! Ruthie is a smart girl, you should trust her judgment,” Emily said soothingly.
“Her, I trust, him, not so much,” he growled. Emily sighed.
“C’mon, Georgie, you don’t even know him,” she said as she slowly made her way over to him. He automatically held out his arms as if it were a tradition. She gently placed her hands on either side of his face and made him meet her gaze. “Please be nice tonight, and you owe your daughter an apology.”
George searched her eyes. She smiled slightly and he sighed. “I guess it was a bit of an overreaction,” he allowed. She nodded with a critical look on her face and he sighed again, his breath tickling her cheek. She kissed him gently on the lips and wrapped her arms around his neck. His hold around her waist tightened.
“I love you,” she whispered.
“Forever and Always,” he replied as he kissed her forehead.
“Aren’t you guys too old for this?” Sirius asked from the doorway, his nose crinkling in disgust. Emily and George laughed lightly.
“Okay, okay, can you make sure Emma and Geoffrey are ready?” Emily asked Sirius and Amelia. They both nodded and headed off for the stairs after hugging their parents.
“Remember to breathe tonight, Georgie,” Emily said softly. He nodded slowly. Emily scrutinized his expression and then went to set the table.
“Mum! MUM!” Fred yelled as he ran down the stairs.
“No running in the house!” George told him at the same time that Emily said,
“What now?”
“Can we please, please, open one present tonight?” he asked as he stopped right in front of her, his twin right behind him. They both gave her the puppy dog eyes with their bottom lips jutting out. Emily chuckled at their expression.
“Sorry, babe, but no. You know the rules,” she said lightly as she cupped his chin with her hand and then ruffled Remus’s hair.
“But that’s not fair!” Remus insisted.
“Don’t even try it, Remus. We have this conversation every year and you always lose. Why do you think this year will be different?” she asked with a smile as she starting moving plates and bowls into their dining room. The silvery color on the walls glinted off of the bowls as she put them on the table.
“Please, Mumma, please!” Fred said again. Emily laughed and shook her head. They left the room, no doubt to try George now.
What do you think?

Hello Emily. What a nice post. I really enjoyed it. It's good Emily still has the upper hand on George. He needs a bit of her guidance now and then.
This part was so wrong of George, but, it is typical.

Don't worry about it; I understand, my dear
New post time?
“Ruthie?” Teddy asked as he gently knocked on the door.
“Come on in,” she said quietly. He opened the door, only to close it behind himself.
“I guess it you told them?” he asked as he sat next to her on the bed.
Ruthie nodded. “It…didn’t go over very well,” she whispered.
“I’m sure everything will be fine, Ruth. I’ll be there for you one hundred percent.” Teddy smiled, slinking an arm around her shoulder. She leaned in and hugged him tightly.
“They’re coming over tonight,” she whispered.
“Well, then we better get downstairs, so we can open the door instead of your father,” Teddy said with the hint of a laugh. Ruthie nodded slowly, but grabbed Teddy’s hand to make him sit back down.
“Teddy?” Ruthie said hesitantly. He gave her a quizzical look before she moved towards her bedside table. “There’s something else I need to tell you,” she whispered.
“What is it, Ruthie?” he asked.
Without saying anything, she slipped her engagement ring on her left ring finger and showed it to him. He stared at it in surprise and then looked up into her face.
“Are you serious?” he asked quietly. She nodded, studying his expression. “How come you didn’t tell me sooner?” he finally asked.
“I’m sorry, Teddy… If it’s any consolation, we just got engaged last week,” she said in a pleading voice.
“Are you sure about this, Ruth?”
“I’m sure about him, Ted,” Ruthie replied.
“But marriage? You’re so young,” he said.
“My parents got married at this age,” she said defensively.
“That’s true, but still…” Teddy shook his head, but shrugged. “I guess, congratulations!” he finally said, a grin creeping onto his face. Ruthie sighed in relief and gave Teddy a hug.
“I invited James over, too. I thought it might be better with him here because he and Scorp are good friends,” she added as they made their way down the stairs.
“Speak of the devil,” Teddy chuckled as they landed on the last step, James grinning at the both of them.
“James!” Ruthie cried as she ran at him. He picked her up and twirled her around.
“Hey, cous,” he said with a laugh.
“I’ve missed you,” she said in his ear.
“I’ve missed you too,” he whispered before setting her back down.
“James, what are you doing here?” George and Emily asked at the same time.
“Ruthie invited me over, I hope you don’t mind,” he said sheepishly.
“Not at all! Are the rest of the Potters with you?” George asked.
“Nope, it’s just me,” James said with a smile.
“Well, we’re glad to have you. The others are in the living room,” Emily said, motioning to the other room with the tilt of her head. James nodded and started for the room, but there was a knock on the door. Everyone froze, staring at the door. Ruthie was the first one to thaw out, Emily quickly behind her.
“Scorp!” she said excitedly as she opened the door. Scorpius grinned at her and then peeked at his parents’ expressions. Draco had a frown upon his face while Astoria smiled politely.
“Come on in,” Emily said as she opened the door wider. “Can I get your coats?” Emily asked politely. Astoria smiled and nodded, slipping out of her coat as she walked over the threshold.
“Thank you, your home is lovely,” Astoria replied sweetly. Draco shrugged out of his jacket and handed it to Emily as well. She hung them up in the hallway closet and then motioned them to follow her to the living room.
“Thank you. I’m glad you could make it,” Emily said before throwing her husband a look.
He narrowed his eyes and then sighed. “Yeah, I’m glad you could make it,” George said with a forced smile. Draco smirked slightly at him and then glanced back at Emily. George’s jaw clenched tightly.
“How’s your holiday going so far, Scorp?” James asked.
“It’s okay. You? I haven’t seen you in a while,” Scorpius said with a grin.
“It’s been great. I went to see Les yesterday,” he grinned.
Ruthie and Scorpius chuckled. “And how is she?”
“Pretty good,” James grinned.
Scorpius grabbed Ruthie’s hand as they walked into the large living room. Amelia and Sirius were on the floor with Emma and Geoffrey while Remus and Fred were shaking the presents under the tree.
“Guys,” Ruthie said loudly. “This is Scorpius, and these are his parents,” Ruthie introduced. Scorpius smiled shyly at the older siblings as they smiled back.
“Oh, Ruth, this is my Dad and my Mum,” Scorpius said as he indicated to his parents.
“It’s really nice to finally meet you,” Ruthie said quietly. Draco nodded his head a fraction while Astoria smiled widely.
“It’s nice to meet you too, Ruthie,” Astoria said. Ruthie smiled widely in return.
“And these are my parents,” Ruthie said. Scorpius held out his hand to George, who reluctantly took it with a sigh.
“Teddy, it’s been a while,” Scorpius said as he held out his hand again. Teddy grinned and shook it.
“Wait! You knew about this,” George accused Teddy. Teddy smiled shyly, nodding. “How come you didn’t tell us? You could have given us a warning,” George said angrily. Emily patted his arm to calm him.
“It wasn’t my warning to give,” Teddy shrugged.
They all finally took their seats. Draco and Astoria took the love seat while Emily and George sat down in an armchair. Teddy, Scorpius, and Ruthie took the floor near Amelia and Sirius.
“Dinner will be ready shortly. I’m just waiting for the garlic bread,” Emily announced.
Okay, so it wasn't much... But one of the spoilers from MYUTM is in the next one What do you think?
