Mockingbird - Sa9+

Hi! This is just a one-shot I decided to make while listening to Mockingbird by Eminem. I was just bored on a Saturday night. Anyway, this is just about what it’d be like if Sirius Black had a daughter. Lily and James are dead, but Sirius never went to Azkaban. Enjoy!

“I CAN’T LIVE LIKE THIS ANYMORE! GET A JOB!”

“Camille, I’ve already told you, I HAVE A JOB!”

“You barely make money from it! We’re probably on the verge of starving to death! We might get evicted, too! I CAN’T LIVE LIKE THIS!”

Sirius wanted to break something; instead he stomped on the floor. “Then why don’t you leave me? Go marry someone with a lot of money, eh? ISN’T THAT WHAT YOU ALWAYS WANTED?”

She was glaring at him with such hatred. “How dare you even suggest that? You’re nothing without me!”

“I’ll still have my daughter.”

“What if I take her with me? What are you going to do then, Sirius? Huh? You’ll have nothing. Your best friend is dead; he can’t help you. You don’t have a family, either. What’s the point of living then?”

Sirius had frozen.

“I hate you, Sirius. I’m going out.”

Then Camille left the apartment, furious and nearly in tears. Sirius sighed and turned to see Sydney, his daughter, just staring up at him.

“Hey, baby,” he said, lifting her up and kissing her on the forehead. “Why aren’t you asleep?”

“Is momma mad?”

“Oh, don’t worry about it, Syd. Let’s go back to bed…”

“Will you sing to me?”

Sirius gazed at her, and smiled. “Yeah, ‘course I will. But I’m not a very good singer, Sydney, so be aware.”

Sydney giggled, to his happiness.

As he carried her slowly to her room, he struggled to think of a song, and remembered one that he had listened to with Lily a few years ago, when Sydney had just been born. He had been inspired by it so much that he still remembered the chorus.

Now hush little baby, don’t you cry
Everything’s gonna be alright
Stiffen that upper lip up little lady, I told ya
Daddy’s here to hold ya through the night.

He placed her gently on her bed and pulled the sheets up to her neck.

I know mommy’s not here right now and we don’t know why
We feel how we feel inside
It may seem a little crazy, pretty baby
But I promise momma’s gon’ be alright.

She smiled, though Sirius wasn’t sure if she could fully understand what he was saying.

And if you ask me to
Daddy’s gonna buy you a mockingbird
I’ma give you the world
I’ma buy a diamond ring for you
I’ma sing for you
I’ll do anything for you to see you smile.

Her eyes drooped, but she was still awake, in front of him, safe and sound.

And if that mockingbird don’t sing and that ring don’t shine
I’ma break that birdie’s neck
I’d go back to the jeweller who sold it to ya
And make him eat every carat don’t mess with dad…

She was fully awake now. “I told you I can’t sing,” he grinned; Sydney giggled again.

He smiled at her for a moment, then decided to just dump out his feelings for her right now. What was the point of waiting? “Syd, can you remember something?”

“Okay.”

“For your entire life?”

“Okay.”

“Alright, then. Honey, I want you to always know that if you ever need anything, Daddy will be right there. Okay?”

“Okay.”

“And that I’m not going anywhere?”

“Okay.”

“And that I’ll always be here for you, no matter what happens?”

“Okay.”

“You’re all I’ve got, baby. I would never give you up for anything, okay?”

“Okay.”

“Can you also remember that nobody’s going to take you away from me?”

“Okay.”

“And that if you ever need anything, you’ll just ask?”

“Okay.”

“And that even if mommy leaves us, just me and you is all we need in the world?”

“Okay.”

“And that I’ll always love you?”

“Okay.”

“Will you remember that all your life?”

“Yeah.”

“Good.”

He gazed at her, thinking. He couldn’t believe he had married Camille. He couldn’t believe his best friend, James, was gone forever. He couldn’t believe he wasn’t living the life he had always wished. What he could believe, however, was that he had a daughter, the only lady he adored.

It was a while before he realized that she was asleep. “‘Night, Sydney, go to sleep —”

She stirred and mumbled something inaudible.

He kissed her forehead. “Your daddy loves you… I love you, baby.”
