“He’s still acting like a jerk,” Kashan told Lily. “I mean, I know he would never have even bothered to pick up my books if it weren’t for that David Raymond, but I have the feeling he isn’t exactly feeling too chummy towards me.”

Lily frowned. “I don’t get it, either,” she said slowly. “He’s always gotten along amazingly with all of David’s past, err, girlfriends. And there are a lot of those, too. Past girlfriends of David’s, I mean. So, given his affable record with all of them, he shouldn’t be treating you this way. Right?”

Kashan nodded, thoughtfully. “Unless …” she began, but she fell silent before actually saying what was on her mind.

“Unless what?” Lily asked, curiously.

Kashan shrugged slightly. “Unless he suspects I’m not being entirely honest with David.”

“But why should he?” Lily asked, as if what Kashan had just said was an entirely unimaginable thing. “I mean, everything shot off exactly how you wanted it to, the way David fell head over heels for you again. Not that he’d ever managed to get over you in the first place. Of course, the fact that David Raymond has no brains helped, but you still played your cards well.”

“I’m not sure if I played them well enough for Tanzeel,” Kashan answered quietly.

Kashan blinked. Standing in the corridor and leaning against a side wall, she had been trying to study for the Care of Magical Creatures test she had later that day when, out of nowhere, she found herself staring not at the miniscule black text about Imps and what not, but a neatly folded piece of yellowish parchment.

Both curious and mystified, she fished it out from between Pages # 20 and 21 and, unfolding it, began to read it, her expression growing cooler with each and every word. Clearly, it was not a note she welcomed. The fancy, overly elegant hand writing clearly read –

“Hey honey,

You, me, and a firewhisky. Sometime tonight?

– Love, Dave.”

Kashan felt like tearing the piece of parchment into a quintillion tiny fragments and binning them but, for once, wisely, she did not. Instead, she quickly wrote back.

“I would have loved to, but I’m otherwise committed today. Talk to you later, I’ve gotta run right now. Care of Magical Creatures test.

K. A”

“Have you noticed something peculiar about this note of your so-called girlfriend’s?” Tanzeel inquired quietly.

David raised an eyebrow. From Tanzeel’s tone, he could tell he was in for a long, long lecture; he already half-regretted showing his best friend Kashan’s note. “No,” he said shortly. “And, whatever you have to tell me, please don’t accuse it of having been bombarded with deadly curses that will ultimately end in the termination of the magical world.” His voice was dripping with sarcasm, and Tanzeel did not fail to notice the curt tone that he had just adopted.

“What I have to say is based on common sense, David Raymond,” Tanzeel shot back heatedly. “And if you’re not interested in listening, I have no interest in telling you, either.”

David tucked his hands into his robe pockets. “No, go on,” he said, still in the same, curt tone, not bothering to attempt at sounding politer. “I would love to know what new accusation against Kashan you’ve come up with this time.”

It was evident from his expression that Tanzeel was, to say the least, infuriated. Then, all of a sudden, he shrugged. “Whatever you say, Dave. I just noticed your note to her dripped with love, Romeo,” he said, sounding his usual calm and collected self again. “She, on the other hand, did not even bother to write a greeting.”

David’s temper shot up again. “Shut it, El,” he said heatedly, angrily kicking aside on of the many empty chairs in the classroom. “What is wrong with you these days, huh? You never had a problem like this with Orla. Or Kat. Or Victoria. Or – Yeah, well, that list is endless. But the thing is, you never had this sort of problem with any of them. What do you dislike so much about Kash? I almost get the feeling you would rather I get together with some idiot like S. Andrews than stay together with Kash.”

“Well, I would,” Tanzeel replied coolly, but calmly.

“What for?” David demanded, his hand actually clenched around his wand.

“Because that girl is using you,” Tanzeel snapped. “I’m telling you, she is. She might not be an expert player like you, but she’s managed to get you hooked on to her. I wish I knew why she’s so keen on being together with you, when she doesn’t even like you, I really do.”

“Just. Shut. Up,” David snapped, his fury finally getting the better of him.

“You seem to be the one who needs to do the shutting up,” Tanzeel replied brusquely. He shoved David aside, and roughly strode out of the deserted classroom. Behind him, the door shut with a bang that resounded harshly across the room as David shot an angry spell at it. Then, clenching his fists, he dropped into one of the nearby chairs.

Even though he was still angry at his best friend for not trusting Kashan, David did not fail to realize how, for the first time ever, he had let himself fight with his best friend over a girl. As his anger began to cool down, he could not help thinking of – according to Tanzeel – the lack of affection Kashan’s note seemed to betray.

He just had one question in his mind, now:

Could Tanzeel be right?
