Quidditch practice.

What with the prospect of the first match of the Quidditch season drawing closer with every passing day, Quidditch practice was finally beginning to get to Kashan. Not that she did not enjoy the sensation of being airborne; rather, she had never thought of how much time the sport could demand, and was now beginning to realize it. Astounding though it sounded – to Lily, anyway – Kashan half regretted her choice of trying out for her team.

“Oey, Kash!” Victoria called to her. “I’m going to –”

“– Release the snitch any time now,” Kashan finished the sentence in an undertone; she had heard it more than she had heard her own name in the past week. Swinging her broom off her shoulder, she jumped on to it, ready for take off. When she landed, five minutes later, the tiny, golden ball struggling in her enclosed palm, Victoria definitely looked delighted.

“Okay, gather round for a sec, guys,” the captain said and, several moments later, the whole team was huddled in a broken circle around their captain. “I wanted to tell you something,” Victoria began seriously. “I’m leaving Faztel.”

For a moment, there was absolute silence. Then Arnold laughed. “Yeah, and I’m the Minister of Magic,” he said in his usual, joking way.

Victoria frowned. “No, I really am, Mr. Fitzgerald,” she said, even more seriously this time. “My parents are moving to London, and I’m transferring to Hogwarts.” Silence fell again, until Kashan broke it, all of a sudden.

“And what’s supposed to happen to our team?” she burst out. “The year I make it to the team is not going to go down in history as one in which Greensoph loses the Quidditch cup, and I mean it.”

Victoria laughed. “It’s not like there’s a dearth of potential Quidditch captains in this team,” she said brightly. “I know most of our old players have left, and all of you, with the possible exception of Terry, are new, but I’m sure you can pull along just fine without me.”

Kashan nodded, though rather dubiously. “The team won’t be the same without you, though,” she said finally. “You captained brilliantly last term, too.”

Victoria blushed with pleasure. “Thanks.”

Sally peeked her head into the Red-Green classroom, only to find Professor Maline shouting herself hoarse at a bored looking student. “Um, excuse me, Professor, but Professor Davies wants to see Kash. I mean, Kashan Aleen,” Sally hastily corrected.

Professor Maline turned around to face the fifth year Prefect. “The Greensoph Head of House?” she asked unblinkingly. Sally nodded. For a second, Professor Maline remained silent. Then, without warning, she abruptly barked out, “Miss Aleen, you may leave.”

Bewildered at what she could possibly have done now to incur her Head of House’s wrath this time, Kashan glanced inquisitively at Sally, who merely shook her head to indicate that she had no idea what all this was about. As they reached the door of Professor Davies’s office, Sally departed with a shrug. Kashan knocked loudly.

“Enter,” Professor Davies said in her usual, brisk way. She beamed at Kashan when she entered, though, pointing her into the seat in front of her desk.

“Yes, Professor?” Kashan asked, clearly puzzled.

Professor Davies cleared her throat before speaking. “Miss Aleen, I’m sure you know that Miss Victoria Hales has transferred to another Wizarding school?” she queried. When Kashan nodded, she continued. “We need a Quidditch captain, then, of course. The best choice of course happens to be Mr. Terry Daniel, having been on the team for the past three years. But Mr. Daniel’s involved in all sorts of activities, and he says he can’t help putting his extra Potions lessons before Quidditch.” She paused, leaving Kashan to wonder where all this was going.

“I was wondering if you would like to take on the captaincy?” Professor Davies asked after a moment’s pause.

Kashan blinked, trying to digest all the information she had just been provided. “Me?” she repeated incredulously. Professor Davies nodded, forcing Kashan to laugh. “Professor, this is my first year on the team. I haven’t even played my first match,” Kashan said, trying not to sound exasperated. After all, this was her Head of House she was conversing with.

Professor Davies nodded. “For sure,” she said, agreeing. “Neither has everyone else on the team, apart from Terry, and he has already refused to be the captain. You’re the seeker, so I can be sure you didn’t get on the team without showing some pretty, good skill. I’ve seen you play, too. You’re a natural.” Finishing speaking, she waited for Kashan’s response.

“Well, I guess I can be the captain,” Kashan said. “Anything else, Professor?”

Professor Davies nodded. “You don’t exactly have a very clean record, Miss Aleen,” she said, becoming more serious. She pulled out a parchment and handed it over to Kashan, who took it curiously, only to burst out laughing. It was a record of detentions given out in the pat month, and Kashan’s name was repeated after at least every four names.

“I get the point, Professor,” she said, keeping back a smile. “I’ll, uhh, behave myself.” Professor Davies nodded, looking relieved. “Is there anything you want to ask, then, Miss Aleen?”

Kashan shook her head. “Not really … Except – Well, what if I totally mess everything up?” she inquired, her signature smile beginning to show once more.

Professor Davies chuckled. “You had better not.”

Aw, I completely understand what you mean. It sometimes hard to write an epically long fanfiction because you sometimes loose sight of what you want to have in it. Right now my FF Memories is nearly 21-ish chapters. Only 19 are on here though!

Kashan smiled. “Thanks,” she said, not letting go of Lily; she was feeling ecstatic, for some reason she could herself not comprehend. “I’ll need to rearrange tryouts, though,” she added, her face brightening up even more. “We’re one chaser short, now that Victoria’s left, you know.”

Lily suddenly laughed. “Tell me about it,” she said, rolling her eyes. “I mean, come to think of it, only a fortnight ago, Quidditch didn’t matter to you at all. Now you’re the team captain. That’s what is called a miracle, I suppose.”

“No,” Kashan said, correcting Lily. “That’s what is called falling in love.”


Friday. The first word that popped into Kashan’s mind, as the bell announced that school was over, was tryouts, which were scheduled for that day. As she shouldered her firebolt, waiting until the school had almost cleared of students, Lily made her way over to her.

“Good luck, Captain,” she said, clapping Kashan on the back. Kashan beamed. “I’ll be back in a minute, just getting myself something to eat while you sweat it out.”

As Kashan stepped out into the grounds, though, she was surprised to see the Goldam team already there, apparently making ready for a practice session. Kashan frowned; but she had booked the pitch today. Her eyes instantly found Tanzeel, standing not far off, talking to – David.

“Excuse me,” she said to the nearest player. “I think Greensoph booked the pitch for today.”

The boy looked surprise. “Really?” he asked, politely. “You’d better talk to Tanzeel then.”

That was exactly what Kashan did not want to do. However, glancing at her watch, she realized the rest of the team would be there any minute. Mustering up all her courage, she made her way over to where Tanzeel stood. He did not even both to glance up as she approached.

“Umm, Tanzeel?” she said, trying not to sound tentative. He looked up, his hair messier than she had ever seen it before; of course she fell in love with it all over again. Keeping back a slight smile, she plowed on. “I booked the pitch for Greensoph tryouts today.”

Without a word, he drew a piece of parchment from his pocket and handed it over to her. Kashan glanced at it; it was obviously a note from the Goldam Head of House. “So what?” Kashan said finally, looking up. “I still booked the pitch.”

“So you can get going,” Tanzeel replied dryly, turning away. It was then Kashan nearly threw a fit. “I booked the pitch for today last week so, technically, a note date just yesterday can’t do anything about it,” she told him, more coldly than she had herself intended to. “You can get going.”

Tanzeel turned around. “Are you sure you want to fight with me?” he asked, his tone icy. Before Kashan could even think of a reply, he was already beckoning to his team. Half a minute later, the pitch was empty except for her.

“You okay?” a voice asked, shaking her out of her stunned condition. Blinking, Kashan realized it was Lily, a bag of biscuits dangling from her right hand. Shaking her head, as if trying to get rid of a particularly irksome fly, Kashan forced herself to nod.

“Never better.”

KasTan was always going to be a short fic; I planned it that way.

Then, looking up, Lily realized Kashan was looking that way, too. Only, she did not exactly looked displeased about what, or for that matter who, she was seeing.

“KASHAN ALEEN.”

“Sorry, didja say something?” Kashan asked, almost jumping up and managing to knock down her goblet of pumpkin juice in the process.

“Yes,” Lily said firmly, cleaning up the mess with a flick of her wand. “You need to talk to Sadi Andrews. As in, today.”

“Sadi Andrews?” Kashan repeated, resisting the temptation to roll her eyes. “What for, exactly? Or am I not allowed to ask any questions?” she added, giving Lily a dirty look.

“Because I think you need some expert advice, not mine,” Lily replied smoothly.

Kashan snorted. “I’m doing no such thing,” she said at once, crossing her arms against her chest. “No way am I telling Sadi Andrews that I’ve actually managed to fall for a boy, after all these years. And that too for one who’s a major, handsome jerk.”

Even though she was telling Lily all this, Kashan could not help admitting to herself how appealing Lily’s little piece of advice sounded. Sadi Andrews was, by far, the girl in most demand around Faztel. She also happened to hold the officially unacknowledged record of having five boyfriends in one week, ditching each when she realized he was not the right person for her, and getting a new one, before finally settling on her current one.

So far, those two had managed to be together for a whole, solid month, and Kashan was sure Roger Turner was ecstatic about it. A whole month with Sadi Andrews. It was common knowledge that Sadi had to really, really like a boy to stay with him that long. If anyone could give her some advice on how to tackle someone like Tanzeel, Sadi could.

And if her advice didn’t work, Kashan knew nothing else would, either.

“Don’t be stupid, Kash,” Lily was now saying. Kashan barely heard her. “Sadi and you’ve always been on excellent terms; you know she would love to help you out. And she can keep a secret for several lifetimes, if she gives one her word of honour to. Tanzeel wouldn’t suspect a thing. Besides –”

“– Well, I guess I’ll go talk to her,” Kashan said, cutting across Lily’s seemingly endless lecture.

Lily looked momentarily stunned at this new turn of events. “You will?” she asked, blinking.

Kashan nodded.

Lily beamed. “Excellent.”
