“He had the guts to ask you out? When all he does on those dates of his is to use his girlfriend as a snogging partner, and then ditch her?” Lily said furiously. “And he had the guts to ask my best friend out?”

When Kashan did not reply, Lily raged on, all by herself. “For heaven’s sake, he broke up with Orla only the day before yesterday.” Then her tone suddenly changed. “Well, you’ll go down in the history of Faztel as the first girl to refuse David Raymond,” she said, smirking, apparently pleased.

Kashan nodded absent-mindedly. “Oh yeah, that,” she said. “Did you notice how handsome his eyes are, by the way? Tanzeel’s, I mean?”

Lily stopped in her tracks, half turning round to face her best friend. “Kashan Aleen, did you refuse David because he’s a jerk, or because you’re in love with a certain Quidditch captain?”

“A little of both,” Kashan replied cheekily.


“Don’t worry, mate, she’s not worth you,” Tanzeel said, patting David on the shoulder to calm him down.

“Who cares about that,” David said heatedly. “No one, I repeat, no one, ever turns down David Raymond. Who the heck does she think she is, anyway? She doesn’t own this place, to go strutting around like that.”

Tanzeel heaved a sigh. “Look, Dave, no need to take it so hard,” he said calmly, his hand still resting on David’s shoulder. “She’s too proud for her own good, just the way you think she’s too pretty for her own good, and that’s it. Get yourself another girl. Move on. There’s no dearth of them for you, anyway,” he added, smirking.

David nodded. “I will, but don’t remind me what I said about her earlier; because I don’t think she’s too pretty for her own good, anymore. She’s not worth me. But it’s harder to move on than you know – You’ve never fallen in love.”

For several moments, Tanzeel was quiet. “Dave?” he said finally.

“Uh-huh?” his friend replied absent-mindedly.

“Did you really plan to be serious with her? Or even sincere?” he asked gently. “Were you planning not to ditch her when you got bored of the whole thing, or not to snog others behind her back?”

David looked up, his expression furious. “What exactly are you trying to say, El?” he said hotly. “That I’m a player? And to think you’re supposed to be my best friend.”

“You know just as well as me whether you’re a player or not; but I want the answers to my questions, Dave.”

David shrugged. “Well,” he began. “No, no, no, and no,” he said coldly.

“So she was just going to be another of your snogging buddies, right?” Tanzeel asked. David nodded sullenly, though almost as if against his will.

Tanzeel smiled slightly. “Well, then,” he said. “It really shouldn’t be hard for you to move on. Because – and don’t kid yourself that you did – you didn’t love Kashan Aleen, anyway.”

He was coming closer . . .

Kashan woke up with a start, and the dream vanished in the light that met her eyes; cold sunlight streaming in through the window, just after sunrise. Glancing at her reflection in the mirror by her bed, Kashan had to say that she did not look too good. She was clearly running a fever.

All the same, she slipped into her school uniform, slung her bag over her shoulder, and left her house without having breakfast, because her parents had been too busy fighting in the dining room over whose fault it was that the milk carton had split, and there was now milk all over the dining table.

As she entered the school premises, the first person she saw was David, glaring furiously at her, with Tanzeel nowhere around; she was clearly early, having skipped her morning meal. It was only when she nearly bumped into Victoria Hales that she remembered that the tryouts she was supposed to be taking part in were today.

No way! How was she supposed to play, in this condition?


“Well, good luck is all I can say,” Lily said, leaning in to kiss Kashan on the cheek as Victoria told Kashan which tryout group she was in. Then, making her way back to the stands, Lily settled down to watch Kashan play. Her eyes following Lily, Kashan realized with a jolt that David was sitting in the stands. He did not look too lovesick, though. On the contrary, he scowled fiercely when their eyes locked. Kashan hastily looked away.

Several minutes later, she was swinging one leg over her Firebolt as Victoria blew shrilly at her whistle. Once airborne, Kashan let the wind ruffle her dark hair and stroke her cheeks. She had always loved flying; it was only her disinterest in everything else related to Quidditch – the rules, the players, and everything else – that had kept her back from trying. Now, however, she just knew she had to try.

“Excellent job,” Victoria told her warmly, when she landed on the ground fifteen minutes later. “You did an awesome job.” Kashan positively beamed with delight. From up above in the stands, Lily winked at her.


“Right, and then we’ve got Kashan Aleen as the new seeker.”

Kashan breathed a sigh of relief as Victoria made the announcement. Not that she had ever doubted her ability to make it to the team; but knowing that you were officially confirmed as a player was certainly a relief. Kashan felt so, anyway.

“You surprised me,” Lily told her, giving her a quick hug. “You’ve never played that brilliantly before, and I mean it. What made you play so good?”

“Tanzeel,” Kashan said shortly, returning the hug.

Yup, you could say Kashan = me in a lot of ways. But, thankfully, my situation is not so desperately hopeless. It's way, way, WAY better.

Lily grabbed a broom as Kashan kicked off, chasing her. Behind, the stands were empty. Only the Greensoph team players hung around, with a few, other students. David’s emerald eyes followed Kashan all the way to the goalpost, and back.

“I could hex her and nobody would ever know,” he said thoughtfully.

“Don’t be stupid,” Tanzeel hissed back. “As if Lily Asaif would not figure it out and kill you,” he added, trying to knock some sense into his best friend.

David scowled. “What’s with Lily Asaif barging into everything that’s even remotely related to Kashan?” he asked hotly. Apparently, his fury at being turned down had still not subsided.

“What’s with you barging into everything that’s even remotely related to me, and vise versa?” Tanzeel said in an undertone, only to be scowled at even more fiercely.

Tanzeel grinned. “Let it go, man,” he said, ruffling David’s hair. “I heard Sharon Hall is interested in you. She definitely looks it, anyway. You wanna give her a try, Mr. Player?”

David turned around, glaring, and pushed Tanzeel’s hand away. “I may be a player, but even players settle down sometimes.” Tanzeel raised both eyebrows. “Don’t tell me you still like that girl,” he asked roughly, watching Kashan made a perfect dive, land, and jump off her broom, laughing.

“Yes, and no,” David replied shortly.

“Meaning?”

“Meaning yes, I haven’t managed to get over her but, no, I wouldn’t date her for anything after what she did. She actually turned me down. When has anyone had the guts to do that, before? I wouldn’t ask her out for the world now. You know me, El.”

When Tanzeel made no reply, David was forced to raise one, perfect eyebrow. No matter how much they fought on silly, little things at times, Tanzeel was, after all, his best friend, and his opinion mattered a lot to him. “Well?” he demanded impatiently. “Don’t you?”

“I thought I did,” Tanzeel replied quietly.
