“Tanzeel and Kashan sitting in a tree, K, I –”

It was before classes had begun, the next day. Lily looked up from the Arithmancy book she was reading to kill time [Why had Kashan not arrived yet?], only to see Tanzeel walk into the class, bag slung over shoulder in his casual, I-am-so-cool way. Whistling and what not broke throughout the class even before he stepped in.

“Shut it,” Tanzeel shot at Simon, causing the whistling boy to do so at once. In fact, Simon almost blushed. At once, the whole class fell silent – Tanzeel could sound really authorative when he wanted to. “I thought you guys knew me,” he said, sounding bored by the whole business. “Honestly, could I possibly have the time to chase a girl?”

“Um – Yes?” Sabrina said, hopefully. Tanzeel threw her a look.


“I’m telling you, Kash, he’s the type who doesn’t even have the time to smile back at someone who’s dying for him,” Lily hissed. “Apart from that, he is also arrogant, conceited, big-headed –”

“And brilliant, handsome, muscular, intelligent, and cool,” Kashan finished sweetly. Lily rolled her eyes, knowing that this was going to get nowhere. Tanzeel had never been the type to fall for a girl, not even one as pretty and famous as Kashan Aleen. Oh, and did she mention it was always quite the other way around? Because, unfortunately, it was.

“Well, you don’t have to pull me along every time you’re planning to spy on him,” Lily said desperately as Kashan literally dragged her along the vast grounds, to the Quidditch pitch.

Kashan snorted. “Spying?” she repeated, very, very sarcastically, indeed. “Excuse me, Lily, but I thought we were going to watch a certain dark-haired, dark-eyed someone commence Quidditch tryouts, along with a dozen other excited students from the other houses, and not spying.”

Lily wrenched her hand free from Kashan’s grip and halted. “Well, when have you ever been interested in Quidditch before?” she inquired. “You don’t even know who plays on your own house’s team. Do you even know who Greensoph’s captain is?”

“Of course I do,” Kashan said briskly. “It’s Marian Sherlock, duh.”

“Errm, Kash –?”

“Yeah, what now?”

“It’s Victoria Hales, not Marian Sherlock. Marian finished school term before last.”

“Really? That’s nice. So, are you coming with me or not?”

And Tanzeel? He probably won't. Or, maybe, just maybe, he will.

Lily sighed inwardly, realizing that Kashan was, as always, not going to listen to sense. Scowling, she grabbed Kashan’s arm, forcing her best friend to stop. “What’s so interesting about this tryout? It’s not even your house’s tryouts, Kash, it’s Goldam’s.”

“Well, Miss know-it-all, do you know who happens to be the Goldam Quidditch captain?” Kashan said, pausing for a second or two in her stride to listen to Lily.

“Yes, thanks, my information about Quidditch is far more ‘up-to-date’ than yours. I don’t go around telling people that an ex-student, who happens to have left Faztel, actually captains my team.”

Kashan gave her the most distasteful look she could possibly manage. “Well, then, I want to see those tryouts,” she said, finality ringing in every word.


“Right,” Tanzeel called out to the many students gathered in front of him. “I’m going to divide you all into –”

Some of the score or two of students occupying many of the seats up in the stands waved to their friends down below, who were trying out for their house team. Kashan frowned as Tanzeel beckoned to a pretty, third year, telling her to come over.

“You know what, I’m seriously thinking of trying out for my house team,” Kashan said thoughtfully, turning to Lily as the girl obeyed. Lily eyed her doubtfully. “I thought you were afraid of heights,” she said uncertainly.

“Who me?” Kashan asked, as if stunned. “No way.”

It was then that Lily really realized how hopeless it was.


“I’m seriously getting bored, Kash,” Lily said, after two hours had passed and the tryouts were still not over. Evening was beginning to draw near. “Couldn’t I just go back home, and have a nap or something?” she asked.

“Come on, Lil, how many chances do we get to stay late after school?” Kashan said, not taking her eyes off one, certain, Quidditch captain.

“Kashan, I’m seriously exhausted. I’m going.” Picking up her schoolbag, Lily stood up. Kashan was finally forced to look up. For a moment, she said nothing. Then she nodded. “I guess you could go,” she told Lily. “I’ll get home when this is over.”

Lily breathed a sigh of relief. “Finally!” Giving Kashan a brief, one-armed hug, she quickly left.

Leaning back in her seat, Kashan stood up again only when the tryouts were over. Students had arrived and departed and though the number of watchers had increased by the time Tanzeel finally called down the last batch of airborne hopefuls, Kashan knew for the fact that she was the only person who had watched the whole tryouts, without missing out anything.

Getting up, she silently made her way down to the pitch. Reaching the crowd that had gathered there to congratulate their friends, Kashan stopped for a moment. Tanzeel was talking to his new beater, explaining something to him. As the beater moved away, Kashan made her way over to him.

“Nice work,” she said quietly.

Tanzeel looked up. “You stayed here all day?” he asked impassively, not even bothering to say thank you. Kashan nodded wordlessly. “Uh-huh.” A second later, he had left.

For the first time, Kashan realized that Lily might have been telling the truth, and nothing but the absolute truth, when she had told her that Tanzeel was not the type to be anybody’s man.

Awww....I feel sorry for her, she realized the blatant truth.

Wow, I can't believe that I have not been here in so, so long. Okay, so maybe it's only three days, but it still seems like forever. O_o

Emma <3: See, you told me to stop updating so much, and I did.

“So, how did the tryout thing go, again?” Lily asked over the phone, munching on a Dino-Munchie – those hideously expensive chips.

“It was okay,” Kashan replied quietly.

“You okay, Kash?”

“I’m not so sure about that. I think I managed to realize what you’ve been trying to tell me about Tanzeel. It would be impossible, even for someone like me, to get his attention, right?”

“Right,” Lily said slowly. “You still want to give it a try, don’t you?”

“Yeah, I guess so.”

“What for, though? He’s a git, Kash; trust me, I know him. You’ve never liked anyone else this way, before.”

Kashan had known Lily would ask her this question, later if not sooner. She was not sure how to explain it to her, but she gave it a try anyway. “They have all been too easy to get, Lil,” she began quietly. “Tanzeel is like … another challenge.”

“Plus, he’s handsome,” Lily put in sarcastically, smirking.

“Yeah, and that, too,” Kashan said, her mood lifting, all of a sudden. Her signature smile slid back into place and, settling more comfortably on the living room couch, she abruptly laughed.

“Man, if she stays around anymore, I might as well say goodbye to my sanity,” David muttered, watching out of the classroom window, only to see Kashan pass by, carrying a pile of textbooks.

Tanzeel looked up from his Muggle studies notebook. “What do you mean?” he asked slowly.

His eyes still on Kashan’s figure, David frowned slightly. “You know what I mean, El,” he replied, scowling suddenly. “That girl is too pretty for her own good.”

“Oh, so you’re telling me the famous David has found yet another potential snogging buddy, only one day after he broke up with his last one?” Tanzeel asked, smirking visibly. David looked searchingly at him for several seconds before finally saying something. “You don’t love her, do you, El?” he asked seriously.

Tanzeel snorted. “No, du-uh,” he said, looking as if the very mention of such a possibility was an insult to him. David smiled. “Good. Because I might just fall for her yet. Might just.”

Tanzeel smirked in response. “Way to go, Romeo,” he said in an undertone.

Don't worry, I've done the same thing before...my page refreshed after I clicked subit...and it subitted it twice! non, c'est non problem!

“Umm, Kashan!” David called out. It was right after school; the bell denoting the end of the last period had rung only a couple of minutes ago, and it had definitely been hard to spot Kashan in the midst of the other students mingling outside in the grounds.

Lily frowned. “What could David want with you?” she asked, sounding faintly alarmed. She knew he was the lady-charmer alright; but she also knew that she had to keep Kashan away from him, seeing how he was always hanging out with Tanzeel. In her opinion, the more Kashan saw Tanzeel, the worse things could, and would, get.

“Come on, let’s see,” Kashan said, jumping at the opportunity to get a good look at … no, not David – Tanzeel.

Before Lily could stop her, she had walked over to him. In the background, Lily hesitated, not sure if she really wanted to see what all this was about. “Yeah?” Kashan asked, trying to keep her eyes on David, and not let them stray on to the person next to him.

David smiled affably at her. “I was wondering if we could possibly meet somewhere after school?” he asked hopefully. “If you know what I mean,” he added, winking at her.

For a moment, Kashan felt her mind go blank; absolutely blank. Here she was, trying to get a certain someone’s attention – a certain someone who was now engaged in conversation with another boy, as if she did not exist at all – only to end up being asked out by his best friend.

“No, I don’t know what you mean,” she said, finally able to string two words together. “Explain.”

For the most fleeting of seconds, Tanzeel looked up, obviously astounded at this response. David passed him a look of absolute incredulity – it was apparent that David had never been talked to this way by a girl before – before turning to Kashan. “Explain?” he repeated. Kashan only nodded in reply.

“Well, I mean to say … will you go out with me?”

For a second, Kashan was tempted to say yes, only to teach him how he should stop acting as if everything would always go the way he wanted to, and every girl had eyes for nobody other than him. Than she quickly decided against it. “I’m sorry, but no,” she said casually. “Get yourself some other snogging buddy.” Because I’m in love with your best friend. Oh, and did I mention I think you’re a jerk? she thought inwardly.

David blinked. “Excuse me?”

“I said I’m sorry, but no. You can get yourself some other snogging buddy.” Kashan repeated, saying each word more slowly and more clearly than previously.

Finally, at long last, Tanzeel really did look up. For a moment, Kashan thought he was going to speak; maybe even ask her what she found lacking in his best friend. But he didn’t. He looked at her … and then he looked away.
