Perfect. The coast could not have been clearer. The whole place was empty, with only one person around, walking leisurely down the corridor. And no, no prizes on guessing who it was – Tanzeel.

Kashan had been seeking this opportunity since yesterday. Swaggering over to him, she smiled affably. “Hello, may I know you name?” she asked, as politely as you please.

The boy spun around, scowling. “Get lost,” he said shortly. For a moment, Kashan was actually taken aback. So taken aback, in fact, that she burst out, “What?”

Tanzeel sighed heavily. “Look, what is your problem?” he asked, anger apparent in his tone. Uh-uh. So she had not been expecting this and, having no backup plan B to fall on, Kashan had to do some quick thinking, right on the spur of the moment.

“My problem?” she asked sweetly. “Awww, why should I have a problem? I just wanted to know your name." Gosh, couldn't you have given an even lamer response, Kashan Aleen? a voice snapped at her from within. Kashan had more pressing matters to worry about right now, though.

Tanzeel arched an eyebrow upwards. For a moment, he really looked as if he was going to hit her. Then, all of a sudden, he calmed down. Smiling, he asked sweetly, “I’m Tanzeel. And what would your name be?”

Surprised, Kashan wondered where all this was going. “Umm, Kash – I mean Kashan,” she said skeptically. Tanzeel smiled again, his brown eyes never leaving her face. “Well, Kash, are you sure you don’t want me to hex you?” he asked her, still just as sweetly. That was when Kashan realized what he was playing at.

She opened her mouth to retort, but –

Tanzeel had already left.

“You what?”

Lily Asaif had never received a huger shock in her life. Grabbing the wall to steady herself, she stared at her best friend in absolute bewilderment. She could still not bring herself to believe what Kashan had just told her.

“You what?” she asked once more.

“I love Tanzeel,” Kasha repeated in a so-what manner.

“But, Kash –”

“Got a problem with it?”

“No, but –”

“Good. Because I’ve decided.”

“But, Kash, your parents would kill you. And he would never possibly pay you any attention, he’s just not that type, I know. And it’s the boys who’re always trying to get your attention, remember? Not you who tries to get their attention. And –”

“– Lily Renald Asaif?”

“Yeah?”

“Shut up.”

LOL!! i love this part. (example) imagine. james potter is bugging lily evans, and she gets seriously annoyed. "james?" "yeah?" "shut up." maxie does it again! Reading KasTan has really made me believe what an amazing writer you are. As Emma said on the first page, you're fashioned a whole new setting, a new magical school, new characters, everything. And the story is really different, too. It's simply beautiful.

“Um, Kash, what are you doing, uhh, here?” Sally, the Prefect patrolling the fourth grade corridor to check for any troublemakers and mischief, asked as she peeked into the Royal-Gold classroom, her eyes huge. “Oh, just talking to Lily,” Kashan replied sweetly. Sally raised an eyebrow. “So, you don’t want to have lunch?” she asked; she knew for a fact that the only thing Kashan ever missed lunch for was her pranks. Kashan shook her head in reply and, shrugging, Sally left. As soon as she was out of sight, Lily exploded.

“Kashan Aleen, you idiot, get out of his seat this instant,” she hissed at her best friend. “What, in the name of Heavens, would he think if he sees you? I mean, honestly, you don’t plan to declare you undying love for him, do you?” Lily could not help her voice from dripping with sarcasm as she asked the last question. Her tone turned more serious, though, as she continued. “Your parents, Kash. They would –”

“You know I don’t plan on telling them anytime soon, Lil,” Kashan said in a bored voice, ignoring the former part of her friend’s speech, and directly commenting on the latter one. Lily was nobody’s fool; she threw her a look. “You know what I’m trying to say,” she shot back hotly.

“What?” Kashan asked, innocently.

“Get out of his seat.”

“What for?”

“Because there are plenty other around. Like mine.”

“Look, Lily –” Kashan began in an impatiently patient tone but, before she could say anything else, she was forced to fall silent as an entourage of messy-haired boys – they had been obviously been not having lunch – filed inside, chatting animatedly. A second later, they had all fallen silent, too. An unnerving sort of quiet filled the classroom for half a minute, before one of the boys finally decided it was high time to break it.

“Umm, Kashan?” David began uncertainly. “That’s, uhh, a boy’s seat.”

“Really?” Kashan replied, whipping around to face him. “How sweet.”

David frowned. “It’s Tanzeel’s seat, actually, and I think you know that,” he said doggedly. “It will be a fiasco if he sees you because, well, I admit it, you’ve already driven him up the wall with the wonderful way you, uhh, interact with him.”

“Well, I think I’ll drive him up the wall, just a little more,” Kashan replied pleasantly. “What do you think?”

David scowled. “Look, Kashan, I seriously don’t think Tanzeel’s going to be pleased to know you’re sitting in his seat, and –”

“Who’s sitting in my seat?” a voice demanded from the doorway. It took Kashan less than a second to realize who it was. As Tanzeel walked in, unable to see the intruder due to the crowd of boys now standing around Kashan and Lily, he sounded rather bored. Lily looked mortified. “God, you did it again, Kash,” she mouthed to Kashan, throwing her a very, very dirty look, indeed.

Tanzeel made his way over to David, only to realize who the person being talked about was. For a moment, his face was impassive. Then, smiling suddenly, he left the classroom without a word.

For a moment, David stared after his best friend in absolute disbelief. Then, quietly following suit, he left, too.

I hate when the net connections die, it happens far too frequently. And love the post too!

Tanzeel raised an eyebrow. “Oh yeah, real smooth conclusion, Dave,” he said sarcastically, brushing his deep, black hair away from his eyes. “Of course not, you idiot; you’ve known me long enough to understand I have far more important things in my life than girls.”

“Exactly,” David cried. “What the heck were you thinking, then? That girl is going to think you’re in love with her, or something.”

For a moment, Tanzeel made no reply. Then, finally, he spoke. “She won’t,” he said shortly. David snorted. “As if,” he said exasperatedly. “This is Kashan Aleen we’re talking about, Tanzeel; the girl whom every second boy at Faztel is in love with. She wouldn’t think you an exception. How can you sound so sure that she doesn’t think you like her?”

Tanzeel smiled, all of a sudden. “I just know,” he told David. “Trust me, she won’t even think that for a second.”

Seeing that it would be pretty useless to argue, David shrugged. “Why did you leave without even asking her to leave, anyway?” he asked after a moment.

“Oh, I decided to let her have her fun,” Tanzeel replied casually.

“And what if she continues to, err, have her fun?”

“Well, she had better not.”

“If you say so, El,” David said finally. “Only, the way you behaved was completely –”

“– unexpected,” said Tanzeel, finishing the sentence for him.


A stunned silent met the departure of the two boys, broken only by the heavy breathing of everyone else in the class. Then Lily yanked at Kashan’s arm and, a moment later, they were outside in the empty corridor. Sally was no longer in sight; Kashan guessed she had decided to go back and have a bite to eat, after all.

“I – I don’t get it,” Lily said, looking bewildered. “Do you think he likes you back?”

For several seconds, Kashan made no reply. Then, finally, she shook her head. “No,” she said quietly, before falling silent again; she was too busy pondering over the whole matter, herself. Despite him changed behaviour, she was dead sure that he did not.

“Then?” Lily inquired, as if Kashan held the answers to her endless list of questions. “The way he behaved was completely –”

“– unexpected,” Kashan said, completing the sentence for her.
