"I never met my father..."

Hogwarts: October 9, 1984

A man with greasy, black hair sat at his desk- eyes closed. His office was mostly bare, but for two leather chairs in front of the mahogany desk, long dark green curtains, and a tall bookshelf shoved behind the desk. A rap came at the door before it was forced open. "Severus?" Professor McGonagall asked. The man's eyes opened. "You have a visitor." There was a short pause as he took in a breath and nodded. "Send them in."

McGonagall exited, soon replaced by a woman in a hooded, black cloak carrying a bundle of blankets. The air was still, electric, for several moments before the woman pulled back the hood on her cloak, revealing a pale face with grey eyes surrounded by flowing black hair. "Asha." he breathed.

"Severus." the woman answered plainly. "Your daughter," she gestured to the bundle in her arms. "She is to come to Hogwarts when she turns eleven, am I correct?"

He nodded solemnly. "Yes. She will come here." He glanced over at the child in yearning, attempting to get a look at her.

The woman set her eyes in a cold stare. "And no one is to know that she is your daughter?"

He shook his head. "No. No one will know." He gazed back at the baby in the woman's arms. "May I- may I see her?"

"No." The woman gave him a last cold look before putting her hood back up. She exited the room, closing the door softly behind her.

Hmmmm, very interesting start. I love it! Your writing is very well done as I can see so far and I love how you put the dialogue in a different colour, makes it that much easier to read! :)

Quick note, was the asterik after Snape said Asha's name meant to be there? If so, what for?

Hogwarts Express: September 1, 1995

On the platform, Asha Pierce hugged a dark haired eleven year old to her chest. She pulled the tiny girl back to look at her face. The mother gazed into her daughter's dark eyes and smiled.

"You be a good girl now Ava." She warned.

The girl rolled her eyes, giving her mother the 'are-you-serious' face. "Mum. You're the one who's supposed to be at the hospital right now!" she exclaimed.

"Drat, you don't suppose they've noticed I'm missing do you?" Asha asked, checking her watch.

Ava rolled her eyes again, letting out a sigh. "Mum. I'll be fine. Get back to St. Mungo's before they start tracking you down."

Her mother smiled, and gave her daughter a quick kiss on the cheek. "Alright love, hurry on now before you miss the train." she turned as though about to apparate before adding, "Oh! And don't be giving Professor Dumbledore a hard time!"

"Mum. I won't, now go!" She said hurriedly.

The mother smiled and gave a quick wave. "Alright, good bye love." she said, and apparated back to the hospital.

Ava rolled her eyes, smiling to herself at her mother's foolishness. She dragged her trunk to the train, stepping on board. Making her way down the row, she finally found an empty compartment towards the back and took a seat. The tiny girl stepped up on the seat in a feeble attempt to heave her trunk into the rack, with no such luck. The compartment doors opened and in stepped a teenage boy with blond hair.

The boy gave a small smile before lifting her trunk into the rack for her. "There you are." Ava smiled back before thanking him. The older boy looked back to the hallway where two other boys were standing. "Do you mind if we sit here with you?" he asked.

She shook her head. "Not at all." The other two boys stepped in and took their seats- the boy with the blond hair taking the seat next to her.

A small smirk formed on his lips as he introduced himself. "My name is Draco Malfoy."

Hogwarts Express: September 1, 1995

Ava spent the rest of the ride with the three boys and a girl that entered their compartment not too soon after she met the boys.

"And this is Crabbe and Goyle." Draco rushed, rolling his eyes. He leaned down and whispered in her ear, "Really, they're quite stupid, so you don't need to pay any mind to them. Easy to boss around though, only thing that makes them useful." He told her with a wink. "So who're you?" he asked, now talking at a normal volume.

Before Ava could answer, the door opened and a girl Draco's age walked in. The girl raised an eyebrow. "Well hello. And who is this, might I ask?" The girl glanced at Draco, then back at Ava.

"Ava Pierce, you are?" she asked, imitating the girl's expression- much to the amusement of Draco, who had to pass his snicker off as a cough.

"Pansy Parkinson." she snapped. She looked back at Draco and crossed her arms over her chest. "And why, are we sitting with an eleven year old?"

He shrugged. "She was already in our compartment so I figured I'd just let her stay. Besides, she looks like she'd make a good snake." He glanced back at Ava. "You a pureblood kid?" He asked. She nodded enthusiastically in reply. "See? What did I tell you?"

Pansy sighed and rolled her eyes. "Fine. The kid can stay." She squeezed in on the other side of Draco and sighed in acceptance.

Hogwarts Express: September 1, 1995

For the remainder of the train ride Pansy continued to sulk as Ava basked in the boys' attention, occasionally grasping at the spotlight by throwing out a line such as "Did you see the Weasley kid gawking at Granger earlier? I swear, it's bad enough that they go to our school already, but the fact that a mudblood and a blood-traitor are practically snogging every five seconds is absolutely repulsive!" To which Draco would dismiss irritably and continue questioning his newfound mini-me.

"So look," he started, as they approached the Hogwarts Platform, "usually I don't associated with first years. However," he said with a small smirk, "I'll be willing to make an exception if you make it into Slytherin." Though it was evident on his face that he was referring to when she made it into Slytherin.

Draco shoved open the compartment door and stepped in stride with the girl. He stopped, a look of disgust on his face as a girl with bushy brown hair and a boy with violently red hair exited the compartment in front of them, murmuring amongst themselves.

"And avoid those two at all costs," Draco pointed out, talking in a much louder tone of voice than actually necessary. The redhead whirled around, a look of anger on his face.

"What was that Malfoy?!" he cried, his wand now drawn. He looked down at Ava, eyes narrowing. "Oh and I suppose this is your new apprentice? Taught her to slaughter muggleborns yet?" the boy spat. Ava glared at the boy, opening her mouth to speak. She was interrupted however, as Draco put a calm hand on her shoulder and spoke for the both of them.

"I suppose you could say that," he stated, leading the girl away. "But I'll have you know we've got big things planned Weasley. This year's going to be much, much different." And at that the two turned, walking away from the awestruck faces of Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

Hogwarts: September 1, 1995

The two exited the train side by side, only splitting as they came to the platform. The calls of a man of beastly size beckoned over Ava among the other first years, while Pansy's croons gathered Draco at the carriages. He gave a groan and rolled his eyes, obnoxiously pushing past fellow students and taking special care to lodge his shoulder in the large man's elbow upon passing- to which he took no notice.

Ava gazed up at the man, slightly overwhelmed by his monstrous size, as well as the increasing number of first years. She put on a brave face, sucking in a deep breath. "Alrigh'! Gather 'round, gather 'round! All firs' years over here!" the man bellowed. A few straggling students joined the crowd before he continued. "My name's Rubeus Hagrid," he called over the din, "Groundskeeper here at Hogwarts, as well as your Care of Magical Creatures professor. Now, we're going to be crossing the lake up ahead, I suggest you take great care not to fall in," he paused for a breath, scanning the faces to make sure everybody understood. "Alrigh' now, four to a boat- two front, two back. No more or I will be docking house points," he shouted, though something in the strain of his voice and the twinkle of his eyes said he wouldn't be.

As Mr. Hagrid finished, there was a scramble for the boats. After five or so minutes they were sorted into a some-what orderly fashion, readily boarding the boats. Some pushed past others in order to keep up with their friends, however most ended up separated in the jumble of students.

Ava was one of the last to board, seated facing the castle next to a sallow faced boy with a wiry tangle of blonde hair. Two identical girls sat in front of her, each with the same long, dark hair, and wide brown eyes. The boat gave a lurch as it set for the castle, everyone inside clutching the seats for balance. The boats eased the rest of the way out, its passengers relaxing their grip on the sides.

"Some view, huh?" the boy asked quietly. The girls looked up in surprise. Up ahead was the castle. Huge, bright, and an oddly comforting sight. As though they were approaching an old friend's house, not a school.

"Yeah," one of the twin girls agreed. But besides that, no one else spoke for the rest of their painfully long voyage across the lake, making all four of them greatly relieved when the boat jerked once again, this time letting them off to enter the doors of the castle.

Great Hall: September 1, 1995

At the very front of the hall was the staff table, nearly every chair filled- including one with a rather unwanted guest, seated to the immediate right of Professor Severus Snape. That unwanted guest would be correctly entitled 'Dolores Umbridge'. The new designation of a rather haughty ministry worker did absolutely nothing to lift the man's spirits. Once again, somebody had stepped up to take his rightful place as this year's Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor. The fact that it was a ministry employee only soured his mood even further.

As the returning students filed in, Dolores put on an encouraging smile and beamed out at the students. Severus slumped in his chair, silently taking note of his returning Slytherins. Malfoy's boy was there obviously, along with his usual troupe of Crabbe, Goyle, and the latest addition of Miss Parkinson. Dolores continued beaming out at the students, though she missed the dramatic act Malfoy put on of rather blatantly insulting her. At this he had to smirk. Draco was a git. But he was crafty, and entertaining to watch. "Well," Umbridge stated, not bothering to turn away from her business of startling the students with her obscure smiling, "while it is good to see that something is causing you joy, I do insist you control what I presume are your students."

The smirk vanished, leaving only the cold hard stare in his eyes. "If they've done anything wrong then I have yet to notice," Severus replied cooly, refusing to make eye contact with the woman. She was about to respond, but was cut off as the doors burst open revealing Professor McGonagall, immediately followed by this year's round of first years. The man smiled smugly to himself, as the scroll of names was unrolled and the sorting hat began its song.

By the time it finished, he was nearly bored out of his wits already and the actual sorting still had yet to take place. A man could only watch so many of these things. Professor McGonagall took her stance by the hat and read off the first name, "Atkins, Beatrice." A girl with dark, straight hair stepped out of the line and walked to the stool, an aura of confidence seeming to radiate from her. She sat on the stool, the hat barely touching her head before screaming out "SLYTHERIN!" in that rather obnoxious tone of its.

Severus clapped along with the others of his house as the girl hurried over to take her seat. "Atkins, Roxanna." McGonagall called. An identical girl to the one before her stepped up to the stool.

"Slytherin!" Great. He had twins to deal with. He would be keeping an eye on them, especially if they were anything like the Weasley boys. Just the thought made him shudder.

The sorting continued on as usual, boring. Severus clapped along with everyone else as each child was placed, only tuning in to listen as the occasional shouts of, "SLYTHERIN!" were made. Nearly half way through he slumped back in his chair, ready for this dreadful thing to be over. "Pierce, Ava." Professor McGonagall called. Severus froze. He looked up from his seat, struggling to achieve the same bored expression as before. How...? He counted back the years. No, it couldn't be. But there it was. Almost eleven already, and there was no denying it. That was his daughter.

He watched as she timidly pushed out from the crowd and walked towards the stool. She had her mother's eyes, brown and wide, like the eyes of a deer. And her mother's narrow face and small frame. But the hair, the hair was his- dark and pin straight, barely skimming over her shoulders. And... her nose. It was small and dainty looking, though crooked slightly, as though it had been broken and never healed quite right. His nose. That one distinguishing feature. And in that instance he felt all the need to tell her who he was, and how sorry he was for never being there. But of course, he couldn't do that.

Ava slid gracefully onto the stool, pushing off the floor with the tips of her toes. McGonagall held the hat on the girl's head, never quite letting go, for if she did it would slip down past her ears. The hat was on her head, and for the longest time they just sat there. She was up there longer than anyone else. Silence stabbed through the air like pins and needles, catching on each breath he took. The hat never took this long, never. Which only spoke one thing in the mind of Severus Snape- his daughter was arguing with the sorting hat. Silently, of course, but there was no other possible way for it to take as long as it did. Even Dumbledore seemed concerned by now. And after sitting for what seemed like an eternity, the hat spoke one word. "Gryffindor."

One word echoed through the mind of Ava Pierce as the hall erupted in noise. No. This wasn't happening. She couldn't be a... no. She couldn't even think the word. From the Slytherin table, disgruntled shouts and echoing protest came from all directions. From the opposite table- her table- came shouts of joy. The other two house tables seemed at a loss for words. What the heck was going on?

Obviously, word had gotten around that she was affiliated closely with Malfoy. It was no wonder they were confused, seeing as it had been almost guaranteed that Miss Pierce was a snake. But they had been wrong. As the girl clambered from the stool, head down in shame, she had no idea where to turn. Obviously she was intended to sit with the Gryffindors. But there was no way she could bring herself to do it. A shout of protest came from the left-most table. "Professor Dumbledore! There's been a mistake!" The girl whirled around.

"Sit down Malfoy," a man hissed. He had been sitting up at the staff table with the other professors at the beginning of the sorting, but was now on his feet, trying to calm the mass uproar. He must have been the head of house.

Blinking back tears, Ava pushed her way through the crowd, taking a seat at the farthest chair from the front- all the way at the table's end. There had indeed been a mistake.

★ ★ ★ ★

That night, she snuck out of the dorm. Quiet as a mouse, she crept down the staircase- careful not to disturb the portraits. It took some time to find, but finally, after what must have been over half an hour, she arrived at the headmaster's study, the staircase already available and the office door ajar.

Carefully, Ava slipped up the stairs. Peering in through a slight crack between the door and the wall, she spotted the Headmaster and the same dark haired man from before. "I don't know what to say Severus," Professor Dumbledore whispered, "I have no explanation other than it was not meant to be." he paused, eyes flickering over to her hiding spot, then back at the man.

"It doesn't make sense. You don't think-" the man stopped. He glanced over at something beyond her view of the room before looking back at Dumbledore. "-I believe we have a visitor." The girl saw a smile play on the headmaster's lips.

"Indeed we do."

Headmaster's Office: September 1, 1995

Severus watched as the timid frame of his daughter pushed open the office door. He clutched the edge of his seat, knuckles going white. "Miss Pierce," Dumbledore stated. "It's a bit late perhaps, it would not be wise to be wandering the castle at this hour. Especially seeing as you only just arrived." He gave her a soft smile and motioned the fidgeting girl to the chair in front of him, the chair immediately next to her father. "Tell me what is on your mind."

Ava did as instructed, scooting up into the large armchair. "Now," the headmaster started again, "what is it that has you up at such an hour?" She fidgeted, twisting her fingers in her lap and refusing to make eye contact. Beside her, Severus watched her carefully, agitatedly thrumming his fingers on the arm rest. Finally, the girl spoke.

"Sir," she started, "I was wondering if... if the sorting hat ever makes mistakes." The air hung still, silent. Dumbledore leaned back in his chair.

"The sorting hat does not make mistakes," he said cautiously, "though I suppose one might believe he or she belongs to another house. The sorting hat does not usually take the student's preferences into consideration," he paused, "however I do believe that an exception was made to that guideline this evening."

At that, they both had to stare. "But sir, it didn't," Ava confirmed. The Headmaster gave a knowing glance in the Potions Master's direction before continuing.

"Then I suppose it doesn't afterall."

★ ★ ★ ★

After his daughter had headed back off to bed, Severus stood and began to pace. "So you're saying the hat did take her opinion into consideration?" he asked. Professor Dumbledore gave a chuckle.

"Yes, in fact, I'm nearly positive." Professor Snape gave him a confused glance. The Headmaster continued. "I believe that she was up there for such a long period of time because she was arguing about her placement. Thus the hat took her strong will into consideration and placed her in Gryffindor," he smiled, eyes gleaming behind his spectacles.

The Potions Master sighed, running a hand through his hair. His daughter was on the road to becoming a self-absorbed troublemaker. Not that he had any say on the matter, she didn't even know her father was alive.

Severus stopped his pacing, sitting back down in his chair. Dumbledore reached across the desk, patting him on the shoulder. "She looks exactly like you." And at that, he had to smile.

Great Hall: September 2, 1995

That night was a restless sleep for Ava. Several times she was woken by nightmares, only to find that she was actually drenched in her own sweat and tangled amongst the bed sheets. Many of the dreams consisted of her being yelled at by the sorting hat or being abandoned by Draco. However, in each of them there was once reoccurring theme- she could not scream. The sound was lodged in her throat and refused to erupt. Morning came far too late.

As soon as the sun emerged, Ava quickly dressed and bounded down the stairwell to the great hall. Looking around, she saw that she was alone except for the Potions Professor, who was seated up at the staff table. Anxiously, she sat down at the end of the Gryffindor table closest to her professor and began filling her plate.

Looking up from his paper, Professor Snape inhaled sharply as he saw his daughter. Getting used to seeing her everywhere was going to take some time. As was treating her like his other students. "To bed late and to breakfast early, what are your professors going to think when you fall asleep in class?" he asked cooly.

Ava glanced up. "I-I couldn't sleep," she stammered. He raised an eyebrow.

"Of course you couldn't. And next time you bother the headmaster, make sure it's not over something as rediculous as a sorting," he spat. Professor Snape gathered up his paper, disappearing through the door beside the staff table, and leaving Ava to wonder what she'd done wrong.

★ ★ ★ ★

That morning went by sluggishly, most of the classes filled with detailed explanations of classroom procedures and what to expect that year. The only plus side was that Ava found she'd be having classes with the first year Slytherins, and took to gathering with them. By lunch time, she was already an honorary snake and was invited to sit with them during meals. This excited her greatly over the distress of being sorted as a Gryffindor.

Ava wedged herself in between Beatrice and Roxanna, finding that she was directly across from Malfoy. He smirked. "I knew you weren't really one of them," he confirmed. "Besides, the sorting hat's a load of rubbish anyways. At least half of the entire Ravenclaw house are idiots." The rest of them howled with laughter.

"Why did the hat put you into Gryffindor?" Roxanna asked. "You're just as much a Slytherin as I am."

Ava sighed. "I have no idea." Her stomach growled in protest. "Doesn't really matter anyways, it's not like I can fix it. C'mon let's eat." But something inside knew better. Something inside said there was a mistake.

Hogwarts Grounds: September 6, 1995

That week went by sluggishly for Ava. Not only because of the fact that she was frowned upon by the majority of her house, but also because of the whispers starting to erupt. Particularly among the upperclassman. She did her best to roll her eyes and move on. However, soon it was becoming difficult.

On the first Wednesday of the girl's school year, she was due for double potions directly after charms. With a sigh, Ava walked ahead of her group of friends and down into the dungeons. Like every time she came down, she examined the walls and statues, the layout and the tapestries, and breathed in the cool air deeply- all the while fantasizing what it would be like to be down there all the time. In her empty headedness, the first year didn't realize until it was too late and she was on the ground, that she was walking right into an older student from her house.

"Watch where you're--!" a boy started, only to be shoved irritably by a girl.

"RON!" the girl exclaimed. She offered out a hand to Ava. "Are you alright?" she asked.

Ava looked at her skeptically. She'd seen this girl before. Where? She couldn't remember, but she didn't want to take any chances. "I'm fine," she huffed, ignoring the girl's hand. "Watch where you're going next time." The first year picked up her books and stalked off towards the potions classroom, just as another boy with dark hair popped up.

The girl and the two boys exchanged glances. "What am I missing?" the darker haired boy asked. The other one shrugged.

"Just an obnoxious first year, mate. Nothing to worry about."

The dark haired boy shook his head. "Not that. It's something else," he said vaguely. The other two exchanged glances. "I'll be right back," he assured, before taking off towards the potions room.

"HARRY!" one of them called. But it was too late, he was already on his way.

Arriving at the door to the potions classroom, the fifth year did a quick once over of the room. There! That was the obnoxious girl Ron had been talking about. But there was something strangely familiar. Of course, she had the scarlet robes. It was probably just somebody from the common room. But still... he couldn't shake the feeling of déja vu. Giving a sigh, Harry turned around and headed towards the common room.

"And what are you doing here Potter?" a snide voice asked. Professor Snape.

And that's when it hit him. When two and two fit together. When the crooked nose and sleek black hair, the gangly frame and the piercing gaze made sense. "Nothing, Professor," he stated. And without waiting for a response, Harry Potter took off in search of Hermione.

Later that evening, Harry and Hermione sat in front of the fire working on homework. "Harry?" she asked. "Helloooo?" she snapped her fingers in front of his face, causing him to blink and push her hand away.

"What?!" Harry asked irritably.

Hermione looked at him warily. "You've been distracted all day. And you haven't even started on our charms assignment!" she said, pointing at his empty sheet of parchment. She, of course, had already finished and turned it in. "What's the matter?"

Harry rolled his eyes. "Nothing! Just-- look." He pointed across the common room towards the girl they'd seen earlier just as Ron sat down.

"What are we looking at?" Ron asked. Harry pointed again.

"Her."

The three looked over at the first year. Hermione looked back at Harry and raised her eyebrows as if to say, 'So?'. "So," Harry started, "Does anybody else see the resemblance?!" he asked.

"To...?" Ron and Hermione both started.

Harry sighed. "To Snape!" At this point, the girl had edged closer to them and the three were talking in hushed whispers. Ron shrugged.

"I dunno mate, I guess they've sort of got the same nose and the hair and the bad attitude. What's it matter?" he asked.

"Harry," Hermione said. "I know what you're thinking, but it simply doesn't add up. Professor Snape isn't even married," she pointed out.

"But you don't think--"

"No. I don't. And it isn't any of our business anyways," Hermione finished. End of conversation.

And that was the last of that anybody mentioned for a long time. After all, there were much more important matters at hand.

Professor Dumbledore sat at his desk late that evening. The school year would be starting up again soon. Indeed, he had pressing matters at hand. And as such, a small black box sat on his desk. Of course, he had opened the box many times and gone through it's contents- several photos, a dark lock of baby hair pinned to a child's blanket, a silver locket. A dense white envelope, yellowed with age, sat at the bottom of the box. It was now that Dumbledore sat another, newer envelope on top of that one and locked the box.

A timid knock came at the door. "Come in," he answered. And the door opened. The same young girl he'd met for the first time nearly a year ago, after hearing her name bounced around for what seemed like ages, now stood in his office once more. "Take a seat," he instructed. She did.

"I must start by telling you how truly sorry I am for your mother's passing," Albus started. The girl sat wordlessly, showing no signs of response. It wasn't until she gave a small nod that he continued. "Of course, along with this comes the issue of whom you are going to be living with until you come of age." Still no response. "And it was decided by your father quite some time ago-- "

"You knew my father?" Ava interrupted. There. That got her talking.

The Headmaster nodded. "Knew would be an incorrect verb of choice here. I believe 'know' would be better suited for our purposes," he answered calmly. The girl stared.

"He's- ... he's-- "

"Alive? Yes. And healthy as well," Dumbledore paused. "Miss Pierce, there are some things you ought to know about your mother," he said quietly. Ava remained silent, allowing the man to continue. "Your mother went mad when she found out she was going to be giving birth. Rather than to sort things out logically with your father, she denied him in every way. Even after you were born she was gravely ill and in constant need of medical attention. Which she... denied," he paused to collect his thoughts and take a breath. "Your father never saw you until..." he stopped.

"Until what?" Ava burst. Professor Dumbledore shook his head. He set a hand on the box and slid it towards the girl in front of him. She read the tiny etched lettering on the lid carefully.

Misses Avery Harlan Corriane Pierce

She took the box in both hands and pried at the lid. No good. "You'll be spending the remainder of your summer here with me, and starting with school in the fall just as planned. Your things have already been sent for. They should be here soon," Professor Dumbledore said, beginning to stand. He walked to a stairwell leading to a tower above. "You'll be staying just up these stairs and to the right. The box and its contents are yours," he finished.

Ava nodded, picking up the box and following him to the stairwell. Looking up, she realized that only one thing was important to her now- she had to get that box open.

Hogwarts: August 18, 1996

Every night for the remainder of the summer was spent as follows- at promptly six thirty, three house-elves would come up from the kitchens with their dinner. From then until about seven thirty, Ava and Professor Dumbledore would sit at a round table in one of the rooms at the top of the stairs and talk while they ate. They talked about her mother mostly, and Ava would try to fish out answers about her father.

"What's he like?" she would ask, and Dumbledore would chuckle.

"Well what's anybody like?" And his answers would leave her to ponder as the man changed the subject to quidditch, or something of the like.

After dinner, the house-elves would come to take away the dishes and the Headmaster would head off to his study. Which left Ava sitting on the four-poster in her room, trying to figure out how to get the box open. She tried everything.

First, the girl tried forcing it open to no avail. Then throwing it at the wall. The box itself seemed indestructible, however she was not sure about its contents. She tried cutting the lid off with a knife. She tried cutting the lid off using magic. She tried simple spells- alohamora, reducto, diffindo, etc.- all with no effect, except in making the box rattle and shake before sitting completely unharmed.

The only spell showing any effect on the box at all was Lumos, which caused the letters of Ava's name to burn in bright silver and then fade rapidly, some letters faster than others.

Two weeks before school started, the Professors returned to Hogwarts. Instead of eating by themselves, Ava and Professor Dumbledore joined the others at the staff table in the Great Hall. This year they were joined by Professor Horace Slughorn.

"Professor Dumbledore! It's good to see you again," he greeted at their first dinner altogether. "But I can't say I know this one," he added, indicating Ava.

The other Professors exchanged glances nervously, looking at each other in a way that implied they knew exactly why she was here and that Horace had crossed some sort of unspoken boundary. "Ah, yes," Dumbledore answered. "Miss Pierce has been staying with us due to the unfortunate passing of her mother. Special arrangements," he said calmly.

And as if taking the hint, Professor Slughorn said no more except, "Well then it's certainly a pleasure to meet you. Perhaps you can come by my office sometime for a chat."

Professor Slughorn's Office: August 19, 1996

Late that next night, Ava lay in bed trying to fall asleep. It seemed like everything was trying to keep her awake. The wind was blowing the leaves on the trees outside, the light of a few lamps still flickered. Even the summer moonlight shone through the open window and fell at her feet in a puddle. It seemed like everybody was awake. She needed to get up.

Crawling quietly out of bed, the twelve year old opened the bedroom door and crept down the stairs. She peered around the corner, and only set off out of the office when she was sure the Headmaster had retreated to his study. Ava descended the stairs quickly, careful not to slip on her too-long pajama bottoms.

The girl climbed one flight of stairs after another, after another, after another, unsure of where exactly she was going. The castle was dim and empty at night. Even the portraits were sleeping. But it wasn't long until she arrived at the door to Professor Snape's old office.

Ava knocked quietly on the door twice. There was no answer. "Professor?" she asked, pushing open the door. "Hello?" A large figure wrapped in an elegant robe appeared from behind a corner.

"Miss Pierce!" Professor Slughorn said, surprised.

"Sorry to bother you sir, I just--"

"What are you doing up at this hour?
he asked. The man looked down at the girl's feet. "And with no shoes!"

Ava grinned sheepishly. "Couldn't sleep."

The Professor nodded. "I've been having trouble myself. Here, take a seat and I'll see what I can whip up," he gestured to an overstuffed arm chair before setting about gathering potion ingredients and setting a cauldron over the fire. They sat in silence for a few minutes before Professor Slughorn returned with a small vial and a cup of tea, and sat down in the armchair across from her.

"That ought to do it," he said finally. "Go ahead and take it now, it takes a little bit to kick in." He poured the vial's contents into the tea and handed it to her. Ava took the cup in both hands and took a few gulps of the warm liquid. It smelled of peppermint.

"I don't suppose we've had a proper conversation until just now then," Professor Slughorn added.

"I suppose not," Ava agreed, setting down her tea.

"Dumbledore mentioned your mother had passed. I'm truly, very sorry."

Ava shrugged. "Thanks."

"What did she do? I might have known her- many of my former students do grow up to fill big shoes in their professions," he stopped to let her answer.

"She didn't do much actually. Mostly stayed home with me until she was admitted into St. Mungo's," Ava answered quietly.

"Of course, of course. I'm sorry to press you, it's hard loosing a parent," Professor Slughorn said sincerely. "You're father certainly turned out to be quite something, he always was an excellent--"

"You taught my father?" Ava interrupted. It seemed to be a habit she was developing.

Slughorn inhaled cautiously. It was clear he'd already said too much. "Well, yes. But I've taught lots of students, you have to remember I'm not as young as I once was," he said with a sort of forced chuckle.

"I think it would be best for you to head back up to bed, Dumbledore must be wondering where you've run off to."

Hogwarts: August 30, 1996

The rest of the summer went on rather blandly. Each night was spent attempting to pry open the box as usual, followed by hours of restless sleep. Several times, Ava went to talk to Professor Slughorn. Some of them merely in order to restore her sleep. However, she soon developed a great fondness for the man and it wasn't long until she'd shown him her box.

"It's truly a maddening piece of work," she said, holding it out. "I haven't gotten it to do much."

Slughorn took the box and shook it gently, peering at it from all sides. Indeed, he also found it puzzling. "How immensely peculiar!" he'd remarked. He eyed the box. "Well show me where you've gotten so far."

Ava drew her wand and pointed at the letters of the box. "Lumos!" she cast. And as usual, the letters were set ablaze with a hot silver light and then quickly diminished.

Slughorn blinked at the box, clearly mystified. "Let me have a go," he said. The man handed her the box and drew his own wand. "Lumos!" Just the same, the lettering illuminated and quickly faded. The Professor narrowed his eyes. "Hmm." He cast the spell again, watching the letters carefully as their brightness began to fade. "Now why is it," he proposed, "that some letters fade faster than others?" Ava stared at him blankly before shrugging.

Professor Slughorn traced a finger over the letters. He smirked. "How peculiar, how peculiar indeed!" But the man did not look trumped, no, he had a grin of satisfaction upon his face.

"WHAT?!" Ava burst at last. The Professor only grinned and gave a hearty laugh so full that the girl could not help but laugh herself.

Professor Slughorn patted her on the back. "My dear girl, I am not surprised you haven't found the lock yet. However, I think it is up to you to open the box," he said with a wink.

Ava stared at him, her jaw slack. "I've been working on this all month!" she cried out. "And as you said yourself, it's not surprising that I haven't found it. Clearly meaning that this is magic far beyond my comprehension!" But the girl didn't stop there, oh no, she had far much more to say. "And now you have the key to what might be information I've been yearning for my whole life, and you're telling me that I have to figure it out myself?!" She gaped at him, heat racing and eyes full with disbelief. Ava bit her lower lip.

"Think of it as a puzzle," Slughorn prompted after a long pause. "It's rather simple actually, just tell the box what you want it to do."

Ava blinked at him, unsure, before sighing and picking up the box. "Open," she told it. Nothing. She gave a disproving glance at the Professor, who shrugged in return.

"Perhaps other methods are necessary," he said with a wink.

Selective Letters From Ava:

9/7
I've never written in a diary before. Now that class has started, Professor McGonagall thinks it's a good idea that I start. So that I can organize my thoughts, I suppose. Dumbledore agreed. Professor Slughorn didn't really have an opinion. Just that if Dumbledore said it was a good idea, then it must be. I'm not so sure about that. The man is getting old.

Today was the last day of our first week back. Beatrice and Roxy were pleased to see me, though it's incredible how people change over the summer. I guess it's because of all this talk about He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Even Draco seemed to be more worn and older looking. His skin is sallow. His hair is lank. That's what war does to people. But what kind of a war is this?

Professor Slughorn has stopped helping me with my box since my last visit. I don't see him much now, other than in class. He did ask me to a dinner party of his, though. I think I'll be going. To be entirely honest, I don't know what to do with this box any more. It refuses to open. Obviously, there is a way in. But nobody will tell me. I've been wanting to ask Draco to help me, but he's been preoccupied-- even in the first week of school. I wonder what he's up to sometimes. He can't have that much homework.

I'm going to tell you right off that I don't like this journal idea. Not one bit. It's just something else for me to keep track of. Something else to worry about-- I don't want anyone to find it. If anything, it's raising my stress levels. I've been sleeping a lot lately. It seems to be the only thing that gets my mind to calm down. I want to stop thinking. I want to relax. I want that stupid box to open up. I want to meet my father.

10/8
It seems like life has been very confusing lately, and being confused has left me feeling more alone than ever. Though I do have classes with the second year Slytherins, I still have to sit with the twelve year olds from my own house, and sitting with somebody in class has become such a rare occurrence anymore that I don't even begin to expect it. I don't see Draco much at all, since he always seems to have run off somewhere with more important matters to tend to. I catch him whispering to people sometimes. He doesn't like to make eye contact to much of anyone. In fact, I can't remember when the last time we spoke was.

Even in the evenings I don't have anybody to talk to, since I've been moved back into the Gryffindor dormitory. I stay up late, and admittedly, get much more work done. I will say that my grades have been better this term. The bushy haired prefect smiles at me sometimes. She's a bookworm, I think. She must applaud my studious change in character.

I catch that dark haired friend of her's sneaking out some nights. I don't know what he's up to, but nobody seems to want to stop him. Then again, I don't think anybody sees him leave besides myself. I have half a mind to tell Professor McGonagall, but that would just write me up as a rat. Honestly, I'm so bored and alone anymore, that I don't really care.

The only things I've got worth my time are this (unfortunately), my box (which still refuses to do anything), and the "Slug Club" dinners Professor Slughorn invites me to every so often. Last I saw Draco, he seemed fairly upset that he wasn't invited to the dinners. I don't see why he's so upset, it's mostly a bunch of losers anyways. Including the bushy haired prefect and her dark haired friend. The red haired one I always see them with is never invited, which makes me chuckle, despite myself. I know I shouldn't, but he really seems so aggravated by it that I just can't help myself. It's sometimes good to know that other people hurt too.

12/18
Everybody's headed off for Christmas break tomorrow. I can't say I'm excited in the least, to be entirely honest. I'll just be alone through the holiday since everybody's going home. I suppose Dumbledore's got something planned... I really hope he does. Then I won't be on my own the entire time. I might go explore the castle some while I'm here, and maybe visit the house elves. I've been working on a 'thank you' card for them- it has drawings and beads and I even got the bushy haired prefect to help me charm it so the letters light up when it's opened! I'm so proud of it. I really hope they like it.

I really don't have much else to say, except that last night was Professor Slughorn's Christmas dinner. The food was nice, and he even had a few old friends come visit. There was a real vampire and the entire night he kept staring at me. Professor told him to bugger off, and he told me not to worry about it. Honestly, it freaked me out a bit. But they left eventually, so I suppose it was alright in the end.

I think I'm going to do myself a favor and put this wretched thing away for a while. Or at least until break is over. I need to save my hands for the ridiculously long essay Professor Snape wants finished. I swear, that man is out to get me. But maybe he's just out to get everybody. I feel sorry for him sometimes.

I wonder what he's doing for Christmas...

Hogwarts: December 25, 1996

With no anticipation of the holiday season, Christmas came quickly, and much sooner than Ava had expected.

"See you after break!" she'd told Beatrice and Roxy the morning most of Hogwarts' students set off homeward. They had exchanged hugs and grins and that was that. The twins left on the express along with the others and Ava was left to herself. The days shortly thereafter were spent dozing and doodling- mostly consisting of mindless tasks to ease the girl's growing boredom. For once, she couldn't wait for the holiday season to be over.

Upon Christmas morning the young girl found, much to her surprise, a small pile of gifts addressed to herself at the foot of the bed. Mabel, a mouse-like little girl that Ava bunked next to, had also received a pile, though her's was considerably bigger.

"Merry Christmas Ava," Mabel grinned, as the two sat on their beds deciding which presents to open first.

"Merry Christmas Mabel," Ava returned. Her pile was made up of seven presents- seven little, neatly decorated boxes. She stared with the smallest.

The smallest box was actually two boxes stacked on top of each other, neatly ribboned together with a letter sandwiched between the two. She tore the ribbon off, setting the letter to the side- she'd open that last.

"So who're yours from?" Mabel asked, indicating the gifts.

Ava shrugged. "Dunno. I didn't think I'd get any." She tore off the wrappings, lifting the lid off the first box. Inside was a small vial of clear fluid... Professor Slughorn. The girl smiled. "I guess I'll find out."

★ ★ ★ ★

Among the things Ava had received were a vial of sleeping potion and a chocolate frog card from Professor Slughorn. A scarf from Beatrice and the matching hat from Roxy, a box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavored Jelly Beans from Professor Dumbledore, an old pearl ring from Draco and a carton of chocolates from Mabel were also graciously accepted. The present from Professor Slughorn came with a card, which only showed a drawing of the top of her puzzling box Dumbledore had given her, and said plainly, 'Merry Christmas'. The box from Dumbledore had a note fixed to the side of it inviting her to the staff Christmas Feast, an event she would be most definitely be attending later that evening. And then the gift from Draco merely had a scrap of parchment inside saying, 'Mum was cleaning out her jewelry box. Merry Christmas.'

But it was the very last gift that caught the girl's eye. So small, she probably wouldn't have noticed it had it not been set at the top of the pile, the box was only addressed to her with no indication of who the giver might be. It was a small, black box, the kind you might find a wedding ring in. But rather than holding a ring, the box held a locket with a delicate silver chain. And as she slipped it on before heading down the hall and off to the feast, Ava had to guess at who it might be from.

★ ★ ★ ★

The girl skipped off to the Room of Requirement, all done up in her Sunday best, at promptly seven o' clock. Her hair hung simply down past her shoulders and her usual attire had been swapped for a black velvet dress and ballet flats.

"My, don't you look nice!" Professor Slughorn grinned as she entered the room. He too had dressed up for the occassion.

"As do you sir," she said with a smile. The girl had almost taken her place next to the Professor when the Headmaster appeared from seemingly nowhere.

"Ah, Ava! I'm glad you could make it," Professor Dumbledore greeted. "But if you would be so kind, I have an errand for you."

The girl nodded. "Of course."

Picking up a tray, Dumbledore snapped his fingers and a house elf appeared next to it, gently taking the tray off his hands. "I would very much appreciate it if you would accompany Winky here to take this tray to Professor Snape. He's feeling a bit under the weather, unfortunately," he said gently. And before Ava could respond, Winky set off out the door and down the hall.

Practically sprinting to keep up, Ava and Winky soon found themselves at the entrance to the dungeons. At this point, the house elf handed the tray over to Ava and promptly disappeared.

"Figures," Ava sighed. Carefully, she held the tray in both hands and set off through the dank hallways in search of Professor Snape's office. After many fruitless minutes of searching, she found a narrow hallway tucked away by the Slytherin common room. Taking this, she crept up the stairs to find a door. She knocked twice.

"Professor Snape?" she called. A muffled response came from the other side telling her to come in. The twelve year old gently pushed open the door to find herself in an office, but Professor Snape was nowhere to be found. To Ava's left was a staircase guarded by a black tapestry. Pushing the tapestry aside, girl and tray set up the stairs.

She found herself in an orderly room, much like the one she'd had back in Professor Dumbledore's suite, this one slightly smaller, however, and lacking any windows. In a chair by the opposite wall was Professor Snape.

"Professor Dumbledore asked me to bring you this. He said you were feeling ill," Ava explained quietly.

Sensing that she did not want to be here, Severus nodded and set down his book. "Just set it on the bedside table," he said calmly.

Ava blinked, before giving a curt nod. "Of course, Professor," she said. The girl set the tray down as she was told and headed for the stairs. Stopping in her tracks, Ava asked, "Professor Snape?"

"Yes, Miss Pierce?"
he asked cautiously. The girl looked up at him and gave a faint smile.

"Merry Christmas," Ava said softly. There was a brief pause in which the air hung heavily before he answered.

"Merry Christmas."

Selective Letters From Ava:

1/1
Happy New Year's! Even as I write fireworks are going off on the grounds and somebody's hosting a party down in the common room. McGonagall wasn't too happy to find that Weasley Wizard Wheezes products were being set off, but I suppose she didn't have the heart to ruin our spirits. Don't worry, if she doesn't, Filch will. Despite the festivities, I thought I'd jot a few things down before heading down to the party. Lest I forget.

Holiday went better than I'd anticipated. Dumbledore invited me to his Christmas feast, and I actually got presents- which was incredibly surprising. Mabel was here too, and as much as her squeaky little voice drives me bonkers, it was nice to have some company, though I never did figure out exactly why she didn't go home. I think it was something about her parents having too much to deal with. The girl's got like eight siblings, I probably would've kicked her out too. In any case, we had a spectacular time visiting around the castle. The Christmas trees here are huge.

5/23
This year has been nearly as bland as my first, and I'd say I was glad it's almost over except for the fact that I have absolutely no idea what's going to happen to me over the summer. I suppose I'll just stay here, but Professor Dumbledore hasn't been looking particularly outstanding on the rare occasions that I've seen him. One of these days we're all going to find out that that man is a hundred and eighty six or something. I can't be off by much...

Since Christmas, I've been eagerly trying to decode Professor Slughorn's letter. I think it's a clue as to how I'm supposed to get my box open, but as of yet, I haven't found anything. I wish he'd just tell me. I can tell that Dumbledore has spoken to some of the professors about my father, or at least that they know something about him and won't tell me. I don't get it. Obviously my mother didn't like him, but if my options are between being an orphan and having a father, I'll take the latter. I don't think a person can be that bad. But maybe protecting me from him was mother's dying wish or something... Even still, I'd kill to know who he is. He can't be any worse than mum.

Earlier today Gryffindor won the Quidditch cup! They were playing against Slytherin, but I still can't help but feel excited. This is the house I'm stuck in, after all. It was a good match, and an even better party. The match was rather boring, except for my marveling at the players' ability to stay on a broom for that long, and laughing whenever somebody got hit by a bludger. Quidditch is really a rather comical sport. But great game equals great food, and it seems like everybody in this house knows how to get into the kitchens without causing suspicion. I myself helped out a bit transporting food up to the common room. All in all, I have to say that things have definitely not been as I expected. Gryffindor really isn't that bad.

6/18
It's late. Nearly midnight. And something's going on downstairs. But the only thing that matters is I've done it. I've gotten it open. And there's someone I've got to find.

Gryffindor Girl's Dormitory: June 18, 1997

Prior to the noise downstairs, Ava had been laying angrily on her bed staring at her box and Professor Slughorn's letter.

"Ugh!" she moaned, tossing the sheet of parchment down in frustration. This wasn't fair. Why couldn't she figure it out? She gave a huff of hot air before looking back down at the paper. She held it out at arm's length, squinting her eyes. At this point, she was desperate enough to try anything. But still no such luck. Setting the parchment down, Ava glance back at her box and froze.

Out of the corner of her eye she spotted something suspicious. Something so slight that it was no wonder she hadn't noticed. And drawing her wand, the girl pointed it at the box. "Lumos." And right before her eyes, Ava caught the clue.

Misses Avery Harlan Corriane Pierce

The four letters that faded more slowly than the rest, the four letters spelling out a key, O-P-E-N. Open. And quickly, Ava tapped the letters in order, just as they began to fade. Her breath caught in her throat as a soft 'click' announced that the box had opened.

Tentatively, the second year gently lifted the lid. She gasped as she caught first glimpse of its contents. What looked to be a lock of dark brown hair, her hair, was pinned to a small blanket that was sitting at the top of the stack. Carefully moving it away, Ava set it on the bed and looked down at the pile. Inside the box was another locket, this one silver and slightly more weighted than the one she received for Christmas. Pushing the clasp, she opened the locket. Behind the second window was a picture of her father. She couldn't help but feel her heart drop to her feet. The man in the picture was so small, Ava could hardly make him out. She squinted, trying to let her eyes adjust. But the man was unrecognizable, a stranger. She finally closed the locket and set it down with a sigh. She didn't know what she'd been expecting. To finally find the man she'd been searching for? She didn't know who he was. She didn't even know his name. And before she judged any more, the child returned back to the box with shaking hands.

The girl's heart leapt as she saw what was in front of her. Pictures. The first was old and scratched, but the figure was prominent. A young man with long dark hair and pale skin, and dark eyes that couldn't have ever possibly seen light. Ava gasped. This could not be who she thought it was. She stared for a moment, letting the thought hit her full on. No. It was a coincidence. Setting the image down, she picked up the other two. The first was of her mother- younger, healthier, and with a much rounder mid-section, a hand resting upon it. But her eyes glanced downwards and her hair fell limply over her face. Her mother- alone, stunned, and ashamed. The other was of Ava, shortly after she had been born.

With her eyes beginning to fog, the girl put her shaking hands into the box one final time to pull out an envelope yellowed with age. She opened the delicate paper and pulled out a letter.

SPOILER!!:
October 5, 1984
My dearest child,

According to your mother, you are to be born in two days time. Since she has become pregnant, she has refused to speak to me and has made it quite clear that you and I are never to meet. I am your father. I would like to first establish that under unfortunate circumstances, you were never meant to be born. You were an accident. Your mother decided that I would be the one to tell you since she has already cut off all of your connections to me, with the exception of this letter. To you, I am a stranger. Nobody more than a voice which you may not even remember. I'm not even certain you will get this, in which case, I am truly sorry. I am already sorry. I don't even know your name.

Your mother and I both knew that I could not raise a child, as much as I would love you. We both knew how much she absolutely detested me. And we both knew that keeping you was the only choice we had, unless we were to leave you on the filth of someone's doorstep or in the trash. But to a human? We didn't have the lack of heart to kill you.

By the time you get this, I suspect your mother and I will both be dead. I suppose it's better that way. You will never have to know the man your mother so despised. But there are several things I need you to know; You were born into a time of war, a time of sacrifice, a time of trial. But most importantly, a time of choice. There are so many choices to be made, as you live, as you sleep, as you die. Choices that you yourself may not make, but choices you always have. I need you to know that I made the wrong choices. And one of those choices was you. You will never know how sincerely sorry I am. You will never know how much I cannot forgive myself. I hope your life is long and full,

Your father,
Severus Snape

As she finished the letter, Ava's trembling hands clutched the edges of the paper. She curled into a ball, her mouth opening to scream. But no screams came out, only silent sobs. The truth was finally in front of her. The only thing she'd ever wanted to know, broke her heart in two. And she cried. She cried for herself, for her mother, for the father she never had, she cried for her very mistaken existence that was never meant to be. She sobbed for the life of her, her crying only interrupted by screams from downstairs.

Slowly picking herself up, the red faced and puffy eyed child examined the mass of people in the common room. "What's going on?" she asked. The room was packed with people from her house.

"There's a battle going on!" one boy shrieked. Several people nodded, a few murmuring in agreement. "Professor McGonagall told everybody that was under age to stay here."

Ignoring the boy's last remark, she bolted up the stairs and shoved on her shoes, slipping on a sweater over her t-shirt. She rubbed the tears from her eyes before looking out the window and down at the grounds. Somewhere out there was her father, and this might be her last chance to ever see him.

Ava ran down the steps and out the common room door, into a sea of mass confusion. Taking the steps two at a time, she ducked around people and through door ways. Her father, waiting to be found.

I hope she gets to see him! Great chapter, gets better and better.

Lady of the Lake 07-23-2011 07:51 AM

Absolutely brilliant! I love how Ava finally figured out how to open the box, and the letter was very unnerving (though I would have preferred it if Snape wouldn't have insisted so much on the fact that Ava had been an accident). Please don't let Snape die, please! :D Ava has to meet him and grow up with a father...

Ladybug 07-23-2011 10:27 AM

Wow...wow...wow. I LOVED it!
I wonder if she see's her dad one last time..
I'm not sure if that letter was full of love or not
PAMS!

Hogwarts: June 18, 1997

Ava bounded down the stairs, pushing past people and ducking to avoid wreckage. She had to find him. But where on earth was he? She jumped as a Death Eater and a Hogwarts student resumed their dueling several feet in front of her. Without a second thought, she took off back up the stairs the way she'd come and away from the chaos. Where in the world was she going?

As she passed by a group of injured students huddling together, her ears hung on a phrase. "Somebody said he's up in the Astronomy Tower. I wouldn't go anywhere near that place with him around," a girl whispered.

Immediately, Ava took off in that direction. She wasn't sure who the 'he' they were referring to was, but the Astronomy Tower would be a place to start. She didn't have a good feeling about this, however. Breathing heavily, the young girl took off up the stairs once more.

★ ★ ★ ★

Arriving tired and out of breath at the tower's door, she pressed her ear against it to listen for voices. At first, nothing. Then a low growl came from the other side before the door was swung open. Ava knew immediately that she should not have come up there. Towering over her, Fenrir Greyback gave a smirk showing his enormous teeth.

"Now what are you doing out of bed little girl? Surely they told you a battle was no place for children," he grinned, licking his lips. He lunged towards her and Ava took several steps backwards, only to find that she was trapped between Fenrir and the wall, her only escape being up into the tower. Her eyes widened with fear and her hands trembled as he laughed. There was nowhere for her to run.

"Fenrir!" a sharp voice interrupted. They both turned to find Bellatrix Lestrange and Draco Malfoy headed up the tower. The source of the voice eyed them suspiciously. "And what do have we here?" Bellatrix asked with an airy sort of satisfaction.

"Little girl out of bed," Fenrir grinned.

"And what's your name, sweetheart?" she asked, turning her attention to the girl.

Ava looked pleadingly over at Draco, who only stood shaking. "Ava Pierce," she answered quietly. At this point, herself and Bellatrix were nearly nose to nose, staring each other in the eyes. The woman inhaled sharply, raising an eyebrow.

"Oh are you now?" she asked. "Fenrir, let this one go, she'll be coming with me. Draco, up in the tower," she ordered, taking Ava's wrist tightly and leading them off to the Astronomy Classroom.

★ ★ ★ ★

Closing the door roughly behind them, Bellatrix shoved Ava down into a seat. She held up the girl's neck and drew her wand, pointing it just under her chin. "What's your mother's name?" she asked darkly.

"My mother is dead," Ava replied, trembling.

"What is her name?!" Bellatrix screeched. There was a pause as breath heaved from both chests.

"Asha Natalia Pierce," she choked out.

"And your father?"

"I never met my father."

"You lie,"
Bellatrix howled.

Ava shook, fat tears rolling down her face. The hand holding her neck loosened slightly.

"You know his name," the woman confirmed. She nodded. "Severus Snape." Again, Ava shook her head. Bellatrix removed her hand, using her wand to brush a stray lock of hair from the girl's face.

"Such a pity," she sang, "such a pretty little girl. With so much potential, wasted. You came to find him, didn't you?"

She choked back a sob, as Bella whispered into her ear, "You could come with me, the Dark Lord would be more than happy to find you a home, a real home. To think, you could be such a help to him. And he would punish your father for what he's done to you--" she was cut off as the classroom door swung open.

"Bella!" a voice hissed. Quickly, the woman stood, one hand back around Ava's neck and the other holding a wand at her throat.

"Come back to claim her, have you Severus?" Bellatrix shrieked. She howled with laughter. "She knows Severus, she knows you don't want her! You should've killed her when you had the chance!" she laughed.

"Expelliarmus!" Snape hissed. Bella's wand went flying and she eyed him incredulously. "Out. Now." He forced her out of the room, locking the door behind him. Slowly, he turned to face Ava.

She wiped her face with the back of her hand, still whimpering. "You... you--" Ava stammered through her sobs. Her lower lip quivered as she stared up at him wide eyed.

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry," Snape said shaking his head. "You can't possibly know how I feel for putting you through all this. You never should have grown up alone." And without waiting for anything else, Ava ran to him and buried her face in his chest. Surprised, Severus slowly wrapped his arms around her small body and rested his cheek on her head.

"Don't be sorry," she whispered to him.

The door behind them was blown open, sending Ava across the floor. Bellatrix, having retrieved her wand stood over the child's body. Staring down, she shook her head from side to side, one hand on her hip. "Avada Kedavra," she hissed. The girl's body went limp, her eyes closed to the flare of light. The woman nudged the body with her foot, turning the young girl's head to the side.

"Should have been taken care of a long time ago Severus. She'll only get in the way," Bellatrix said plainly. She pushed him out of the room and let the door swing shut behind them. Nobody would ever have to know that Avery Pierce was anything more than a dead body.

The end.

Well this was clearly a shock to read, since I was expecting Snape to die, not Ava! I hate Bellatrix, but you gave the story a brilliant, if sad, ending. Let me know if you post another story and congrats on your writing! :glomp:
