Chapter 17 A few days later, Draco had enough strength to eat solid food. His recovery was rapid, and Healers were amazed at the speed it took. Hermione was by his side constantly, and Ginny, Pansy, Tomaso, and Mark were frequent visitors. The day came when Healer Deschain pronounced him well enough to go home. "Home? You're...serious?" Hermione asked, hardly daring to believe it. "Yes. His legs are still tender though. Despite the fact that his legs are tender, and he may need crutches for a long time yet, I think the time has come that he return to his own bed." Healer Deschain said with a smile. "Is that a problem?" "No...of course not....did you tell him yet?" "No, I thought you should be the one to tell him such happy news Hermione. He's sleeping now, but he should awaken soon. Why don't you go in?" "Yes...thank you." Hermione stumbled into his room. She sat down by the bed and watched him. Home? Draco had a home...with Pansy. And it was almost certain that Pansy and Mark were together. Where could he go? Draco stirred, and began to open his eyes. He smiled as he saw Hermione. "You still here?" "Always. Draco, we need to talk." "Sure babe." Draco began to sit up, and winced as his legs moved. "What did you want to talk about?" "Well...Healer Deschain said it was ok for you to come home." Hermione began, hesitant. "Hermione, don't act so happy about it." Draco said sarcastically. "This is great news!" "But what home are you going to?" "Yo-...oh." Draco stopped in mid sentence. "Right." "Exactly. Where would you go? Pansy and Mark are practically an item. I'll give anything that they're already living together. What will you do?" Hermione was worried, and Draco didn't blame her. "Something will turn up. I'm sure." Draco said, but Hermione could see he wasn't feeling happy anymore. Just then, the door opened, and Ginny and Tomaso came in. "Hey guys! Why the long faces?" Ginny asked, stopping her cheerful greeting. "Draco get's to go home today. Where's Pansy and Mark?" Hermione said, trying to be pleasant. "Out. Why's that a problem?" Tomaso asked. "Because Mark and Pansy are together now. Draco was living with Pansy. Where's he going to live now?" "With Pansy!" Tomaso coudn't understand why everybody was so worried. "What about Mark? Isn't it going to be, oh, I don't know, maybe a little awkward for me to be living with my ex-girlfriend?" Draco asked sarcastically. Tomaso remained silent. "Don't worry Draco, we'll think of something. I promise." Hermione said, and held his hand. Just then, the door opened once more. A small wizard came in. "Can we help you, this is kinda important." Ginny said impatiently. The boy flinched, as if struck. "What's that?" Hermione asked kindly, and pointed to the letter in his hand. He smiled. "For....Mister Draco Malfoy, Miss." "I'm Mister Draco Malfoy." Draco said from his bed. The small boy crept towards the bed, gave him the letter, then ran off before anyone could either pay or tip him. o0o0o0o What's in the letter? Katie |

Chapter 18 Draco had decided to stay one more night in the hospital. He looked up at the ceiling that night, holding the letter in his hand. Dear Mister Malfoy, This is an enormous opportunity for you. My name is Mister Phillips. I am offering you a position in our Muggle Relations office at the Ministry. Following your father's demise, my department has been somewhat hesitant about hiring more workers. But I feel, being a major factor in your father's career, that you should be given an opportunity to work at the Ministry of Magic. Please send a reply by owl. Mister Edward Phillips Muggle Relations Dept. Ministry of Magic Draco's head was swirling around. Leave Italy? His job, his apartment, Hermione? How could he leave Hermione? How could he pass up an opportunity like this? He moaned and placed a hand to his head. He looked over to Hermione, sleeping in the chair next to his bed. She still wouldn't leave his side. He wanted to take her with him. But what could that mean for them? Maybe I could marry her? Draco banished the thought. Hermione wouldn't want to marry him. He was a flop, a loser. He couldn't even keep a steady girlfriend. What would Hermione want with him? But he loved her, and he was sure she loved him. He reached out and touched her hand. She stirred. "Uhh?.what is it baby?" "Hermione...we need to talk." "Of course. About what?" Hermione was more awake now, and sat up in the chair. "About the letter I got today. It was...a job offer. At the Ministry. They want me to work Muggle Relations." "Oh Draco! That's wonderful!" Hermione's eyes were shining. "I've always wanted to work there." "I know. I was hoping that...you'd come with me. To London. For when they need an interview." "Draco, you know I'll always be there to support you." Hermione assured him. "Wow...Muggle Relations! That's an important office Draco! I wish I could get one that's half as good!" Hermione became lost in her own thoughts. "Hermione, do you realize what this means?" Draco was desperate for her to understand. "You'll be making lot's of money?" "NO! I'll be leaving. For good, if I get this job." Hermione fell back, the realization hitting her. "You'll be going away." "Yes." Draco said, relieved. "And...I want you to come with me." "What? Where would we live? How would we get there? Are you strong enough to travel?" Hermione's questions were all important, but she wasn't saying what Draco wanted to hear. "I'd be able to figure that out if you'd just tell me if you would want to come with me." Draco said, exasperated. Hermione fell silent. "Draco...I don't know." "Just think about it Hermione, please?" "Of course. Good night Draco." Hermione fell back into her chair and was soon tossing and turning, trying to get back to sleep. ***** Ginny and Hermione went shopping the next day. Ginny could tell something was on Hermione's mind, but didn't press the matter. "Gin? I need to talk to you." Hermione said finally. They came out of the muggle clothing store and turned on the crowded London streets. "About what Hermione?" Finally! Ginny was going to know! She tried not to appear too eager. "Well...Draco and I were talking last night, and...he got a job opportunity in the Ministry. In Muggle Relations." "That's an important office." Ginny remarked. "Yes. And...he wants me to go with him." "As what? A friend? Girlfriend? Wife?" "He didn't specify. He just...wants me there with him." "Hermione, you have to lay down the law." They stopped at a small coffee shop, and Ginny bought an iced coffee. They sat outside the shop, Hermione taking sips out of the glass occasionally. "Hermione, you have to let him know that you want a relationship. You DO want to get married someday, right?" "Of course." "Then let Draco know that you won't be there as his toy. You want commitment. Something solid. Like what Tomaso and I have." Ginny said the last bit with a blush, but it was out. Hermione grinned. "You and Tomaso, eh?" "Yes, me and Tomaso. You're changing the subject. Are you going to tell him?" Hermione looked away. "You need to have this said." "I know....I'll talk to him about it tonight, ok? Deal?" "Deal." They shook hands, and finished shopping soon afterward. OK! Done! Katie |

Chapter 19 Draco was packing the few items he had from his room. He was stumbling around on his crutches, and his legs hurt like hell, but he was up and moving. He hadn't heard from Hermione yet, but his heart told him that she was staying in Italy. He finished and sat on the bed, waiting for the bus that would take him up the road to the Ministry's offices. The door opened. Draco didn't turn. He knew who it was. "Draco? Do you need any help?" "No Hermione. All my stuff is packed." "Mine too." Draco jerked, startled. "You're leaving too?" "Yes. I just can't take my life anymore." She sat down on the bed next to him. "All the stress....the job...I'm giving it all up." "What are you giving it up for, Hermione?" Draco asked, still refusing to look at her. She shifted her weight. "For you." Draco's head turned sharply and looked at her. "I'm going with you, if you'll have me, that is." "Hermione....I thought you were staying behind." Draco couldn't believe it. "So did I. But...there are some things more important than what I want. It's what I have to do. And I have to have you by my side Draco. For better or worse, richer or poorer. Even if this job at the Ministry doesn't work, I know we'll make it work." Draco kissed her forehead, and grasped her hand. The bus made it's screeching halt in front of the hospital. Hermione took his bags and hers and helped Draco out of the door and into the street. She waved to Ginny and Tomaso. Ginny nodded and smiled. Tomaso waved at them, and gave them a thumbs up. Hermione smiled and Draco nodded to each of them. Somehow....they would make it work.... OK! That's that! I wash my hands of this FF! I hope my next one would be half as good! Katie |
