Chapter 12: Heartbroken or not?

Hermione rushed up to the Hospital Wing and collapsed at Cedric’s bedside.

“Cedric?” she whispered. She held his hand, her whole body trembled.

Life came rushing back to Cedric’s body after refusing to let his spirit give in to the bright white light threatening to consume him.

His hand twitched ever so slightly. His hand moved again and his eyes opened, only for his grey eyes to meet the same dark black blanket. Hermione spotted him.

“Cedric?” she asked.

‘Mione … What are we going to do? We’re right where we started. Why does it have to happen to us? We were happy.’ he said in her mind.

They were back to square one, after doing so well.

“We’ll get through it though, Ced. We’ve done it before.” Hermione said.

‘It’ll be painful for both of us.’ Cedric told her.

“It would be worth it though, right?” Hermione asked.

‘Could we both go through all that pain and suffering again?’ he asked her.

“No, but I love you. I can’t lose you again, I’ve already lost you twice. I just can’t. we have to get through it together, Ced. And when you love someone that much, you do anything for them.” she was crying now.

‘I want to hold you, and comfort you again ‘Mione. But the only thing I can do is say you’ll be fine. I’ll be in your heart.’ he told her in a sad, defeated tone, as though he had given up all hope.

“Don’t. Don’t you dare say your goodbye’s! Not here! Not like this!” Hermione said.

‘Mione, I’m blind, mute and paralysed. Where does our love go from here? Find true love, forget all about me and live your life.’ he told her firmly.

“I can’t!” she cried.

‘Why not?” he asked.

“Because, you are my true love.” she whispered.

‘Don’t be daft.’ Cedric said.

“I’m not. For the first time in ages I’m thinking clearly Cedric.”

‘We could try doing it again, for you.’ Cedric gave in.

Hermione grinned.

‘Mione.’

“Yes?”

‘This is the last time you get you own way.’

She giggled. She could feel him grinning. “Got it.” she said.

“Ced.” she said.

She heard his deep, even breathing and saw him eyes closed. He was asleep. She kissed his forehead and walked to the Gryffindor Common Room.

“Is he ok?” Harry asked when he saw her.

“Back where we started.” she told him.

“What’s going to happen then?”

“Going to try and help him again.”

“And if it doesn’t work?”

“Then Cedric and I both die from love and a broken heart.” she said simply.

“Hermione that’s a dangerous gamble. I’m not prepared to lose one of my best
friends because she died because of love.”

“Harry, I’m sorry. But I can’t go on if he dies. I am not as strong willed as I used to be. I’m in love, and I can’t help it but it’s him I’ve fallen so hard in love with.”

Harry hugged her. “I’ll help you.”

“Thanks.” she smiled.

“But.”

“I knew that was coming.”

“You’ve got to try and get your life back and start eating properly and sleeping again.” he smiled down at her.

“Deal.” she said. “It won’t be easy. But I’ll try. I’ll start by going to sleep now. Night.”

“Night.” Harry said andched her go up to her dormitory.

The next morning, Hermione was sitting in the common room by the fire, reading.

“You ready?” Ron asked as he walked back downstairs and walked to her.

Ron’s voice caused her to jump in surprise and drop her book. She went to pick it up before Ron saw it, but she was a second too late. He took it from her and examined it.

“Romeo and Juliet? What’s that?” he asked.

“It’s a muggle romance story.” she blushed. She had kept her hobby of reading romance stories from her friends, thus keeping her “no-time-for-boys-only-school” reputation. “A man called William Shakespeare wrote it.”

“What’s Shakespeare?” Ron asked again.

“He was a Muggle playwriter, a great one at his time.” she told him. “He died in the 15th/16th century. His work still lives on today, because they were so great. Though not all of them were brilliant.”

This seemed to shut him up, he appeared to be taking in this newfound information. But Ron being Ron, it would all be gone in moments. Very much like Neville Longbottom.

Harry came walking down seconds later. He, Hermione and Ron walked to the Great Hall for breakfast.

Lavendar looked at Hermione concerned.

“She’ll be ok, right?” she asked Harry and Ron.

The boys nodded, uncertain themselves.

Dumbledore stood up and cleared his throat. The entire Hall fell into a death silence immediately.

“Students. With only two weeks before Christmas, this evening, forms will be pinned to every House and Head Boy and Girl Common Rooms for who will be staying over the Yule Tide holiday. Also I would like to add that this weekend will be a Hogsmeade weekend and a Yule Ball on the following Monday. Enough of my rambling on, tuck into the wonderful breakfast selection the House-Elves have lovingly prepared for you all.”

He sat back at the staff table and the students erupted into chatter, gossip and giggling from the girls about the Ball and Hogsmeade from them all.

“Are you going to go, Herm? It wouldn’t be the same without you.” Ron said.

“No, I think I’ll give it a miss this year. Bit pointless really. I might not even go to the Ball either.” Hermione said.

Ron opened his mouth before he thought and said, “Come on, You’d be able to get Diggory a present.”

“Why? He wouldn’t be able to move to unwrap it or hold it! Besides, he’s also mute and blind again!” she screamed and ran out of the Great Hall.

Ginny looked at Ron and glared at him for a few moments. She ran after Hermione and found her in an empty classroom with Draco, who had followed Hermione minutes before Ginny.

Draco saw her walk in and walked to her. “I’m only being nice to her for you, because I love you.” Draco whispered in Ginny’s ear, causing her to giggle.

“You staying over Herm?” she asked her friend.

“No choice but to. I’ve not allowed myself to had a choice.” Hermione said simply.

“Madness Granger.” Draco told her. “If I got along with both my parents, or if my father wasn’t living with us, I’d want to go home if that happened 2 me and Ginny what happened with you. Either that or shut myself away from the world forever.”

“I can’t leave Cedric.” she retorted.

“You can, Granger. Just get over it or he’ll hate you just like the rest of them.” Draco said, earning him a kick in the shins from both girls. He glared at them, and jumped off the table.

“Try helping and this is what I get!” Draco said, pouting, keeping his glare.

The girls laughed.

“It’s not funny! I will not take this abuse!” he sulked, which made the girls laugh harder.

Draco smirked. “I reckon we could try and get along more, Granger.”

Hermione nodded. “Yeah … possibly.”

That evening, Draco and Ginny walked to the Quidditch pitch after their hard classes.

Draco had told the Slytherin Quidditch team to go to the pitch for training. Ginny had told him she wanted to watch.
