Once again, the flashbacks were great! And of course, multiple points of view always makes for a jucier story. Now, off to work on my in-hibernation-FF. :P - Mel :pfd: |

So this is the last part of the last chapter. But don't worry, there's still the epilouge to go. Eight, part five, Black “Daddy?” “That’s right” Hermia reeled at his words, two such ordinary words which had changed her world, rewritten her life. “Where were you?” she demanded, no longer scared of him, just angry. “I was where your mother instructed me to be. I had no right to question a great woman like her.” His voice was flat and devoid of emotion. He was still wearing the same twisted smirk. “Didn’t you want to be with me?” Now that she knew who he was, she wanted answers. Smith looked her straight in the eye. There was no warmth, no tenderness or remorse there. She realised that he had no interest in her. He was like Nequam. He wanted her mother. His smirk became a twisted smile but his eyes were still cold. “Of course, of course I did but there are times in life when you must do what is right. You must do what you are told. She picked me, above all others, to be your father. I knew when we created you that you would be exceptional. Had I had a hand in your upbringing, you may have even bested your mother.” He seemed to consider her for a moment. From the corner of her eye she saw Teddy trying to pull the back of his chair away from the seat. “You still might.” As Smith spoke, Remus was thrown to the floor. The burly man who had been holding him was bent double and let forth a burst of the foulest language that Hermia had ever heard. She saw him twitch his wand and Remus began to scream. “NO!” Both Hermia and Smith were shouting but the masked man just laughed maniacally. For once, the kitchen in Grimmauld Place was warm. Remus was sat at the table, picking at the supper that Tonks had cooked for them. He was thinking about the message that Severus had sent to him about Harry. “Moony, there’s no wonder you’re so skinny, you never actually eat anything. Tonks isn’t that bad a cook, I quite enjoyed it.” Sirius raised his glass in a mock toast. He may have been joking but Remus knew that he was worried. “Quite enjoyed it? That’s my speciality!” Tonks pretended to pout. “I wouldn’t boast about cheese on toast if I were you Tonks.” Kingsley Shacklebolt’s slow deep voice was coloured by the laughter that he was clearly biting back. “Tonks is the only person that I would expect to poison me unintentionally.” Mad-Eye moody threw his head back and laughed loudly, exposing the gaps where several teeth should have been. “If you’ve all finished having a pop at me, you can make your own meals in future.” “Not very friendly little one, your mother wouldn’t like that.” Tonks shot Sirius a nasty look and he laughed. After a second or so she joined in. The laughter added to the warmth in the kitchen. It was interrupted by a silver doe bursting through the kitchen door. They fell silent as Snape’s voice issued from the patronus. “Potter has not returned from the forest. He seems to have gone on a rescue mission, taking others with him. Black, inform who you can and wait for Dumbledore.” The doe vanished leaving a deathly silence behind her. Remus looked at Sirius. Every trace of laughter and colour had drained from his face and he was gripping the table as though it was his only anchor to reality. Moody was the first to speak. “As much as I can’t stand the man Sirius, I think he’s right. You should stay here.” He looked around at the others. “What are you all waiting for? Come on!” Moody’s words were like a starting pistol; they all sprang into action, grabbing wands and cloaks. “KREACHER!” The elf appeared immediately with a crack, something that Remus had never seen him do for Sirius. Suspicion prickled at the back of Remus’ mind. “Dumbledore will be here soon Kreacher, tell him we’ve gone to the Department of Mysteries to get Harry.” Sirius was grabbing an old cloak from the hooks by the kitchen door. “Yes master.” Kreacher’s acquiescence worried Remus. “Sirius do you think -” “Remus, I’m coming. We can argue on the way.” Sirius’ tone was resolute, his expression determined and Remus knew there was nothing he could say or do to make him stay behind. They rushed through the house, causing Mrs Black’s portrait to scream insults at the top of her voice. Disapperating from the top step, they arrived in the Atrium of the Ministry and charged towards the lifts with Sirius in the lead. Tonks was hot on his heels with Remus just behind her. She seemed have a sudden burst of nervous energy and sped up. Her foot caught the hem of Sirius’ cloak. Time seemed to slow down as all they both began to fall. Remus reached out to catch Tonks and she grabbed his arm, pulling him down on top of her. They landed in a tangle of limbs and cloaks. The determined look that Sirius worn since Snape had delivered his message was gone. As he looked steadily at Remus, his haunted grey eyes had an imploring look within them. He glanced at Tonks, who was trying to disentangle herself as gracefully as possible, and then back at Remus. Sirius nodded and after knowing each other for almost a quarter of a century, Remus knew exactly what he was thinking. The moment passed, time sped up and the three of them sprang to their feet, racing after Kingsley who was heading towards the lift. “Loki No!” “STUPEFY!” Hermia screamed the spell and Smith sent one of his own at the huge man. One of the stunners hit the huge man squarely in the chest, the other hitting the teak dresser, breaking the centre panel. Letters, photographs and gold spilled out onto the floor as his the man fell, hitting his head on the corner of the dresser before he hit the stone floor with a nasty thud of his own. Blood oozed from his temple. Remus groaned as Hermia scrambled to her knees, supporting him in a sitting position. She looked down at him and was frightened by what she saw. He was scared; the veins in his neck were standing out in an ugly, unnatural way. He was trying to breathe deeply but he couldn’t. Tears ran down his face. She looked up at Smith. “Why have you come here? What do you want? I doubt that it’s to make up for missing my birthday party.” Her voice was acidic, almost as though she wanted her words to poison him. “Oh, you are a fiery one Bellona. Just like your mother.” “DON’T CALL ME THAT!” Unbridled rage flooded her body and green sparks flew unbidden from her wand. “Bellona? It is your name. It is your destiny.” He closed the distance between them and she saw that his eyes were exactly like her own. “Destiny?” she spat at him, still cradling Remus, “My destiny? It’s my destiny to fight? That’s what Bellona means, isn’t it? Well if I have to fight, I’LL decide who and what it is I’m fighting for!” “My girl, you are so young. You’ll see soon enough that you have to take your true name and fight for the survival of our kind.” Hermia felt sick. “What do you want?” “You. I want you.” “Why now? Why like this?” “I waited. I bided my time and I watched you. I needed you to be of age. I wasn’t going to make the same mistakes as that idiot Nequam. I wanted to see how powerful you really were. I wanted to see how flexible your loyalties might be.” “My loyalties lie here, with the only family I’ve ever known.” She sneered at him. “I’ll soon cure you of that foolish sentimentality.” “YOU WILL NOT!” Remus sat up, supporting himself finally. Hermia stood up, her wand firmly clenched. “Come child, you cannot hope to win a duel with me.” Smith was almost laughing as he stepped towards her. He paid no attention to Remus, who was dragging himself towards the inglenook, out of the firing line. “You’ve broken into my home, half killed my parents and tortured my little brother. If you think -” “They are not-” “My family? Yes, they are. They took me in when I was a vulnerable child. They’ve loved and cared for me while you’ve been watching and waiting to see if I was good enough, powerful enough to be of any use to you! If you imagine that I’m going to leave here willingly, you are extremely deluded!” Red sparks shot out of her wand towards him and he laughed. Smith took another step towards her, his tall frame towering over her petite one. “You are so like your mother.” “I’m like myself. I have no memory of her or you. Until I was fourteen I had to look after myself. The two of you were only ever interested in yourselves. That’s why you dropped your real names. She was Morgana, enemy of Merlin. I’m Bellona, born to fight. He’s Loki, servant of the gods. And you, you’re Alberich, the sorcerer king who was a master invisibility. Well, I must congratulate you on that. How long have you been an Auror?” “Fourteen years.” A smirk of satisfaction twisted his face. “True invisibility then, to be seen but unseen, to be a trusted member of the ministry for all those years without anyone being suspicious.” Hermia was still grasping her wand tightly, pointing it squarely at Smith. Behind her she could hear at least one of the children crying. “You will fulfil your destiny Bellona.” A movement over Smith’s shoulder brought a smile to Hermia’s lips. “Perhaps I will. STUPIFY!” The spell hit Smith in the chest as Teddy hit him over the head with the back of the chair he had been tied to. Smith fell to his knees and then flat on his face. Teddy pulled his wand out of Smith’s pocket. Hermia flicked her wand and bound him with ropes. She did the same to Loki while Teddy rushed across to Remus. “Hey little man, how are you?” He saw the pale silver blue light pulsing around Remus’ chest. Remus was trying to take deep breaths but he couldn’t. Tears ran down his face. Teddy lifted him up and stepped towards the fire. At that moment, Ashtad Djalili burst into the room. He pushed his dark curls out of his eyes and gaped slightly at the scene in front of him. “Well, I came to save the day but it looks like I’m a bit late. Mr Potter is on his way.” “That’s an understatement. I’m taking Remus to St. Mungo’s. Look after things here. I think they’re working alone, that’s Smith’s style.” “Alright boss, will do.” Teddy and Remus disappeared in a burst of green flames. Ashtad was healing Amelia’s wounds. Hermia pointed her wand at his throat. He frowned at her. “What are you doing?” “When we were both at Hogwarts, what did you do to me in the Great Hall?” “I spiked your tea with Fever Fudge and you passed out. You fell backwards off your chair and everyone saw your underwear.” Hermia lowered her wand, lips pursed. “I had to check you are actually you, not another evil nutter come to kidnap me.” As soon as Ashtad had healed Amelia’s wounds she looked at Hermia. “Where are Cosmo and Caitlin?” “In the Inglenook seat, I heard it close while Smith and I were…” She trailed off, unable to describe what had happened between the two of them. She watched as Amelia crossed to the inglenook while Ashtad cast additional spells over Smith and Loki. Cosmo and Caitlin climbed out of their hiding place. They looked suspiciously at Ashtad. “Who are you?” Cosmo demanded. “I’m Ashtad.” “Have you come to take Hermia away too?” It was Caitlin’s turn to demand an answer. He smiled. “No, I’ve come to take these two away, is that ok?” They nodded, still eyeing him warily. “Come on cheeky monkeys, time for a bath and bed I think.” Amelia began to lead the twins out of the kitchen when Harry stepped over the threshold, followed by O’Brien and Johnson. “HARRY!” The twins rushed towards him and he crouched down so that he could hug them both. “There’s two bad men over there. They hurt mummy and daddy and Remus but Hermia stopped them.” Caitlin spoke so quickly that it was a wonder Harry managed to follow what she was saying. She pointed at Ashtad. “And that man says he’s called Ashtad and he’s come to take them away, but I’m not sure about him, so I’m glad you’ve come.” Harry chuckled. “Ashtad works with me, mummy and daddy. He’s very, very good.” Caitlin frowned. “Are you sure?” “Oh yes, I’m very sure. Now I think it must be bath time?” The twins nodded and followed Amelia out of the kitchen. “Hermia, sit down. Djalili, Johnson, stand guard over those two. O’Brien, could you make us a drink please and then come and take notes.” Before anyone could follow the instructions, Ashtad spoke. “Umm, Mr Potter, I think we might have a problem.” “What’s that?” “The big guy’s dead. I didn’t want to say anything with the little ones in the room.” Hermia was aware that Ashtad was still speaking but after the word ‘dead’ she was unaware of what he was saying. She sank to her knees and started to sob. Harry pulled her to her feet and steered her into a chair. It had been her stunner that hit Loki, she was sure of it. She stared at her wand. Ivy, ten and a half inches, dragon heartstring. It was the only wand she had ever owned and had been her only constant companion since the age of eleven. It was the wand that had now twice been an accidental murder weapon. She handed the wand to Harry. “You need to examine it properly. Smith and I both cast stunners. One hit Loki, the other hit the dresser. He hit his head on the way down. I think it was me. I stunned him because he was using the Cruciatus curse on Remus. John Smith admitted to being Alberich. He’s my father. I… I…” She could not speak, there were no more words. She covered he face with her hands. Accidental or not, she was a killer. Wave after wave of guilt and self loathing washed over her. She was like them. She was just like her parents. She felt someone wrap their arms around her, pulling her into a tight hug. At first she thought that it was Brighid O’Brien, but then she caught the familiar musky scent of Ashtad. She looked up into his dark, liquid eyes and she felt a rush of gratitude and safety. She was aware of Brighid putting a cup of tea in front of but she didn’t want to look away from Ashtad. He was keeping the tide of guilt at bay. Brighid sat next to Harry and started to make notes just as Teddy emerged from the fire. “How’s Remus?” Hermia stared at Teddy, dreading his answer. Teddy’s hair had turned black and his face was grey. “Ted, what is it?” Amelia was standing in the doorway. His voice was barely a whisper. “He’s gone.” “Gone? What does that mean?” Amelia demanded, but Hermia knew. Remus was dead. “When Loki threw him to the floor, his two of his ribs broke and punctured his lung. It was too late. I was too late, I couldn’t…” Amelia started to scream. Teddy managed to cross the kitchen and wrap his arms around her. He couldn’t understand it, his boy was gone, was taken from him, never to come back. The weight of that thought pressed on his heart and shattered it into a thousand tiny pieces. Ashtad and Harry sat in Harry’s office after taking Smith to Azkaban, sharing what was left of a bottle of Firewhiskey Harry had stashed in his desk. “Thanks for everything you’ve done today. How did you work it out?” “When Amelia didn’t come back from the Prophet, I was concerned. I went to see if she was still there and they told me that she never arrived. After that I went to the Hobgoblin in Bath to see if Teddy’d been there. I know how much he likes that pub. When they said he hadn’t been in I sent a message to you and went there.” “You’re good Djalili, Teddy’s right to have confidence in you.” “Thank you Mr Potter. Do you think Smith killed Andrew Williamson?” Harry surveyed his mead and sighed. “I think John Smith is what muggles call a sociopath. He’s superficial, charming but callous, he feels like the world owes him something, he has no understanding that other people have rights and as far as I can tell, he’s incapable of love. I think it’s entirely possible that he has been killing ever since he worked out how to get away with it.” “Merlin. That’s just sick.” “Yeah. It really is.” “What’ll happen to Hermia?” Harry saw the concern in Ashtad’s face; it wasn’t just the concern of a friend. “Nothing. She was defending a child who was being tortured. She might blame herself, but she’ll be the only one. I just can’t believe that Remus is…” The shock of losing Remus sat heavily over them both, a silent cloud of regret, each man blaming himself for not being able to intervene and save the child. All right I'm sorry! I almost didn't do it but in the end I had to. Does anyone need a :glomp:? The Teddy Lupin Fan club Comps have been extended until 25th Oct. Give them a go! |
