Chapter 44
“Something is up with Ginny.” Hermione said one day after class. She watched as Ginny walked swiftly up one of the staircases. She knew she wasn’t rushing to see Malfoy, because he had double potions right now. So what could be so important that she had to practically run up the stairs?
“She has been acting weird for like a week now. Do you think she has given up on Malfoy?” Ron asked excitedly.
“No Ron.” Hermione replied, rolling her eyes.
“Well a brother can hope.” He chuckled.
“She has been sneaking out of the common room at night too. I hope she is ok.”
“Wait, she has been sneaking out at night? If that ferret has done anything to my little sister-“
“Oh shut up Ron. I don’t think she has been sneaking out to see Malfoy. He and her seem to be a bit distant lately.”
“Really? Well that’s good.”
“Ronald. When will you ever grow up?”
”Um, Do I have to?” Ron asked with a cheeky grin. Hermione couldn’t help but laugh and walked with him to the Great Hall.

Hermione sat up with a start as a creak in the floorboard was heard just outside her door. She put on her slippers and threw on a jacket. She then tiptoed to the door and peaked out.
A familiar red head was also tiptoeing, toward the portrait hole. Hermione followed, but then turned back; deciding Ron would want to be with her when she found out where Ginny was sneaking off to. After slipping into the boy’s dormitory, she looked around in the dark for Ron. The snoring gave him away. She walked over to his bed and shook him awake.
When his eyes jolted open and his mouth began to form words, she put a hand on his mouth. “Shh!” she shushed him. She then began out the door again. She could hear Ron following after her.
Luckily Ginny was being very cautious tonight. She had barely just made it down the hall and was turning, when Hermione and Ron climbed out of the portrait hole. Following a few steps behind her, Hermione saw that she was leading them to where the Room of Requirements is.
While she walked past the wall three times, Hermione and Ron hid behind a statue. As the door appeared, so did the two of them.
“Ginny if you don’t tell us what’s going on-“
“Be quiet Ron. Ginny is everything alright?” Hermione asked, cutting Ron off.
Ginny jumped at the sight of her brother and Hermione. Her cheeks turned pink. “Did you guys follow me?” she asked, folding her arms.
“No were in the middle of our prefects duties.” Ron replied sarcastically. Ginny scowled at him.
“Ginny you have been sneaking out and lying to everybody for almost a week now. If something is wrong, tell us.” Hermione said, going for the sympathetic card.
Ginny sighed. Hermione could tell she was struggling on whether to tell them or not.
“Ok. I’ll show you.” She said. She opened the door to the room and walked in. Ron went in after her and Hermione followed after Ron.
What she saw made her heart leap in her throat. “Harry?”
Lying down in a cot was the boy she has been worrying about for the past month or two. His eyes were open and alert. His arm lay across his ribs and he sighed when he saw them. He sat up and she could tell he was ashamed that he was there.
“I thought you weren’t going to tell anybody.” Harry said slowly.
“They followed me.” Ginny replied.
Hermione was frozen to her spot. She couldn’t say anything.
“Wh-when did you g-get b-b-back?” she asked, trying to hold back tears.
“Almost a week ago.” He answered quietly.
“And you couldn’t tell us you were back?” Ron asked angrily. Hermione stole a glance at him and saw that his cheeks were growing red.
“I couldn’t mate. I didn’t want anybody to know I was back because…”
“You told Ginny easily enough.” Ron retorted.
“I didn’t tell her. She found out by accident.”
“How could you not tell your two best mates that you were leaving? And then you couldn’t even bother to tell us you were back!”
“Ron, I left because I didn’t want anything to happen to you guys. You know if I stayed to say goodbye you would of begged to come.”
“I don’t beg. I would’ve come because I was your mate. I thought we were in this together! But I was obviously wrong.”
Harry looked up at Ron. Hermione saw that his hand was shaking. “I wanted you to come. Do you think I really wanted to be out there by myself? With nobody to communicate with but my wand?!”
“Then you should’ve let us come!”
“I cared enough about you guys to leave you behind so you didn’t get hurt!”
“What about you? You obviously don’t look to be in one piece!” Harry was still holding his ribs, and he flinched badly whenever he moved.
“I didn’t want this for you.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. You care about us. We got it. But do you think we don’t care about you? Do you think its not
hurting us
now seeing you like this? You say you didn’t want to hurt us. Well you did, when you left.” Ron said passionately. He then stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him.
