Chapter 19

“So he just came walking out of the Forbidden forest?” Ron asked for the hundredth time in the common room. It was well past one o’clock in the mourning and the three of them were still wide-awake, sitting by the fireplace. Everybody else had gone to bed hours ago.

“Yeah and he just collapsed in front of me and Gin.” Harry repeated. He still couldn’t believe what had happened.

“But if Malfoy could just walk onto the grounds, that means anybody can.” Ron said.

“No, I don’t think they can.” Hermione said smartly. Ron and Harry stared at her, waiting for the explanation. “Well I think the only reason he made through all the defenses, is because he is still a student to this school, isn’t he? The enchantments are for fully qualified wizards, and he isn’t yet. He wouldn’t set off the alarms because he is not of age yet. I don’t think anybody else would be able to make it through without alerting the whole castle.”

While Harry was in awe with Hermione’s knowledge, Ron rambled on. “I still can’t believe McGonagall just let him get help. I mean, after all the things he did last year. He was going to kill Dumbledore for crying out loud!”

“He didn’t want to kill him though. He seemed scared at he very thought. And he had Dumbledore’s wand too. Malfoy had the upper hand but still didn’t kill him.” Harry said.

“He almost killed me!” Ron said.

“He only wanted to kill Dumbledore, because Voldermort threatened to kill him and his family if he didn’t.” said Harry.

“So what’s going to happen when he is out of the hospital wing?” Hermione asked as Ron sulked.

“McGonagall said he is going to stay here and go to classes like normal.” Harry answered her.

“But how can she trust him?” Ron asked heatedly.

“Well, his story was that he didn’t want to be part of it anymore-“

“Yeah and I don’t want to be a red head any more.” Ron mumbled. Hermione nudged Ron roughly and he grew quiet.

“And then he brought up Dumbledore’s offer.” Harry finished.

“The one where he said he would protect him and his family?” Hermione asked.

“Yeah.” Harry replied.

The three of them sat quietly, each thinking different things. They had sat talking all through the night. The sun was just peaking from behind the soaring mountains cape. The sky was a crimson blue that was emitting a golden light from the sun. The fire in the fireplace was slowly going out in its crate. It left the common room shady and dark. Ron and Hermione’s faces were in almost in complete shadow. Hermione’s hair was frizzy and her eyes were alert. You could tell from her grip on the chair, she was thinking hard. Ron was rocking slowly back and forward in his armchair, probably to keep from falling asleep. Harry watched them curiously. He knew Ron was outraged that Malfoy was even back at the castle after all he did to them last year. Hermione was probably worried about the whole situation. But she was putting up a cool front, because that was Hermione. Harry didn’t know what to think about Malfoy being back.

“Do you think it’s a good idea? Malfoy staying here, I mean.” Ron asked Harry.

“I don’t know.” Harry replied truthfully.

“Well if Professor McGonagall trusts him, we should too.” Hermione said. Ron looked really skeptical about trusting Malfoy. Harry wasn’t thrilled with the idea either, but nodded his head to show he agreed.

Chapter 20

The next day was their first lesson with the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. As they all crowded into the room, Professor Kahne was leaning against his desk, watching them file in. After everybody had sat down in their seat, they waited for him to speak. His electric blue eyes looked at every one of his student’s faces before a slow smile slipped onto his own.

“Good morning. My name is Professor Kahne. This is grade 7, Defense Against the Dark Arts. I am pretty sure you have all already figured this out, but I was being formal.” He said with an even more mysterious smile.

“Now, take out your wands and stand please.” Professor Kahn said, pulling out his own wand. When every student was standing up, he flicked it and all the desks were pushed to the wall.

“What I am going to teach you today is Occlumency. Can anybody tell me what this is?”

Hermione’s hand shot in the air as usual. She waited to answer until Professor Kahne nodded toward her. “Occlumency is the magical defense of the mind against penetration. It closes your mind to somebody reading your thoughts or feelings. Legilimency is the opposite, in which instead of closing the mind, you are extracting feelings and memories from another persons mind.”

“Wonderfully said. Ten points to Gryffindor. Occlumency isn’t simple magic. It takes practice;” Hermione turned and gave Harry a look, saying, “see?” Harry ignored her and kept his attention on Professor Kahne. “We will be working on Occlumency for the next few lessons. Now, would anybody like to volunteer and demonstrate being the “victim”?

Nobody stepped forward. They all looked at one another and waited for somebody else to step up.Theyall had apprehensive looks on their faces. Harry looked round at Ron and Hermione, who were both staring at him. Harry sighed and walked forward. A peculiar look appeared on Professor Kahne’s face and his eyes sparkled.

“Harry Potter. I presume you would need to know this in the future.” He said. Harry just stared at him. “What you are going to do is close your eyes. Try and concentrate on nothing. Rid yourself of every emotion. I’m going to go easy on you. Usually your attacker won’t wait for you to close your mind off.” He chuckled. Harry did as he was told and closed his eyes. He tried to think about nothing. But as he tried thinking about nothing, Snape would pop into his head and his disastrous attempt to try to teach him Occlumency.

“Ok, I’m going to try to invade your mind. You ready?” Professor Kahne’s voice said. Harry flashed open his eyes, just as Professor Kahne raised his wand. “Legilimens!”

Harry was waking up inside the cupboard under the stairs…He was being chased by a rouge bludger…Now he was swimming miles under the lake and he could see the unconscious forms of four motionless bodies…He was now in a court room with hidden faces looking down at him… Somewhere the pictures were starting to dim and he was able to see Professor Kahne’s young youthful face. He took his shot and shouted, “Expelliarmus!” His wand immediately shot from his grip and the pictures from Harry’s past vanished.

“Very good Mr. Potter.” Professor Kahne said walking over and retrieving his wand. “I’m very impressed at your level of magic. Ten points to Gryffindor. Would anybody else like to try now that the first person has come forward bravely and is still in one piece?” The class chuckled nervously and they all got into a line.

Every single one of them (except Harry, but even he couldn’t completely close down his mind) had a difficult time closing their mind. Not even Hermione was able to stop him from raiding her mind. After the class had ended and Professor Kahne has assigned them homework (name three reasons why learning Occlumency is a good thing), they all trooped out of the classroom with exhausted looks on their faces. He had also said for them to practice because they were going to continue working on it next time they had class together, which was the following Friday.

“You use to do that for a whole hour with Snape?” Ron asked as they headed for the Great Hall. He was rubbing his temple with them palm of his hand.

“Yeah but Snape was a lot worse.” Harry replied with a chuckled. It was true though. He never felt like he was learning anything with Snape. But Professor Kahne was actually making it understandable for him. Something Snape never could’ve been able to do.

Chapter 21

“Ron will you please stop grumbling? Your making me read the same sentence over and over again.” Hermione said exasperatedly. It was Tuesday night and they both had just gotten back from quidditch practice.

Ron hadn’t finished his potions essay and kept crossing things out, muttering under his breath. Hermione was curled up on the couch reading a book, while Harry just relaxed on an armchair. There were people scattered all around the common room. Harry was always able to spot Ginny in the mix of them all. Well it wasn’t that hard, her flaming red hair kind of stood out. She was sitting with a couple of friends talking. He wondered what they were talking about. Suddenly the group of girls started laughing merrily, as one of them said something funny. Ginny’s eyes sparkled when she smiled. Her smile always seemed to give him the chills. He remembered when he use to make her smile like that…

“Have either of you talked to each other lately?” Hermione asked bringing Harry out of his thoughts. He turned back to her and saw that she was watching him.

“We did at practice.” Harry replied not even bothering to pretend he wasn't watching Ginny.

“I don’t think you did. Ginny needs to talk to you. Go tell her you two need to talk.” She said reopening her book. Harry looked at Ron who shrugged back at him.

“What does she need to talk to me about?” He asked, clueless.

“Just go.” Was all she said.

Harry got up from his chair very confused and walked over to the group of girls. All of them stared at him as he grew closer.

“Err-“ Harry cleared his throat. “Hermione says we need to talk.”

“What do you need to talk to her about?” One of the girls said.

“Why does it always have to be about Hermione?” another asked.

“Uh-“ he stuttered.

“Great answer.” The first girl said sarcastically, making the other girls snicker.

“Its ok you guys.” Ginny said as Harry shifted uncomfortably. She got up from her chair and led him out of the portrait hole.

“Sorry about my friends. They are a little mad at you right now.” Ginny said apologetically.

“A little?” Harry said and Ginny giggled. They walked down the hall together quietly.

“So how come Hermione said you had to talk to me?” Harry asked.

Ginny took a deep breath before answering. “Well, um…”

“Um?” Harry asked looking at her. She stopped near the top of the stairs to look at him.

“Ok, I know you broke it off with me to protect me or whatever, but I still have very strong feelings for you. I hate being apart from you. I’m not scared of being with you. So you shouldn’t be afraid to be with me. I…I think we should be together.” She said looking deeply into his eyes.

This took Harry completely by surprise. First he felt joy erupt inside him. She still wanted to be with him! Then complete sadness engulfed him. He couldn’t be with Ginny. It was way to dangerous. She would be Voldermort’s target for sure. He couldn’t…no, wouldn't put her in danger like that. Even though his heart was aching to wrap her in his arms and kiss her, he didn’t. He needed to keep her safe. Even if she wanted to risk her life to be with him, he wasn’t going to let her.

“I’m sorry Gin, but I’ve… I’ve moved on.” Harry said. It killed him to lie to her but it was the only way. He felt his heart beginning to break as her eyes filled with tears.

“Look I’ll always remember you as the first girl I loved-“

“Loved?” she asked a tear rolling down her smooth cheek. Harry looked down at the ground. He couldn’t look at her like this. And to know he was the reason she was crying…

“I understand. I’m sorry I brought it up.” Ginny said beginning to walk down the stairs away from him. Harry wanted to go after her, but what could he say to her to make her feel better? He would just make it worse.

Instead, he went back to the common room. After he mumbled the password, he climbed through and made his way toward his dormitory. He saw Hermione get up from the couch and start toward him, but he walked right past her. He really didn’t want to talk to her right now. Walking up the steps to the boy’s dormitory, he opened the door and walked inside. Then he fell down onto his bed miserably.
