Safety is our top priority here... well so is law... And that is where this department comes in. In order for you, the Equipment Control Specialist, to make sure that new broom is safe to ride, you need a good place to work. There are cabinets of microscopes, magnifying glasses, hazard suits, and anything else you'd need. There's also a room in the corner for testing things with wind, fire, earth, or whatever else you might need to test something with.

Chiara walked into the office and sat at her desk, she was rather proud of having made the Magical Equipment Control team. Mr. Wordsmith seemed to be an attentive boss, having sent her a note as a welcome to the ministry.

She placed her things on her desk, the one with the plaque 'Chiara Quorra' hovering in front of it, and set out to the filing cabinet to report her biographical information.

Lola walked into the office. Normally she would be shy, but today she was proud of her new robes. Emerald green made her eyes pop. She quickly found her desk and set up her things. The leather chair was unusually comfortable for Ministry furniture. Lola's mind wandered to thought of magically enhanced chairs.

Chiara walked into the office and saw a woman looking around. "You must be Miss Adams." She smiled at the woman and extended her hand, "Chiara Quorra, we'll be working together in this office." She sat at her desk and swiveled the chair in the other woman's direction. "So, where were you before the ministry?" she asked.

Lola looked up at hearing her name. At least, she thought it was her name. No one had ever called her Miss Adams. She actually looked around to see if this lady was talking to someone else.

"Oh, hi!" Lola replied. "Call me Lola. I thought I would end up alone here." She pushed her short hair out of her eyes. I should get that cut, she thought. "I actually worked at the ministry before, I was with the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad, but I wanted to get into the law enforcement. I was sort of hoping for something a big more exciting." She tried to hide her disappointment at her current position.

She smiled, a little forced. "What about you, what've you been doing before this?" Lola twiddled her quill, a nervous habit developed at Hogwarts.

"Oh," Chiara smiled. "Mother insisted I attend Muggle university. So I did, and then I took a trip to Africa with a group that tended to the less fortunate wizard children there, to bring them wands and teach them basic magic." She said.

Lola reclined back in her chair. She was finally getting comfortable in her surroundings. She raised her eyebrows when she heard Chiara recieved a muggle education. "Muggle schooling, huh. So you're mum's a muggle then? Learn anything useful there?"

Lola strained her brain thinking about possible applications of such an education. She took off her red rimmed glasses and began to wipe them clean.

Lola politely nodded. Her mind wandered as it often does to somewhere else. She closed her eyes and imagined she were on a beach, in the hot sun. "That would be nice," she murmured to herself. She dragged her mind back to reality.

"Where is everyone?" Lola asked aloud. She knew this wasn't a high priority office, but to be ignored altogether? She frowned. "I think I'm heading to the break room, nothing's going on here. Let me know if someone else shows up, OK Chiara?" Lola replied, slightly annoyed with the lack of work to do.

Syd wandered past the Magical Equipment Control room and hear voices chatting inside. He stopped and peered in, seeing none of the new cauldrons out and being inspected. His rather strong aura made it's way into the room, making things seem a bit more heavy...

"Morning ladies," he said, stepping inside. "I see Miss O'Connor's been a tad too busy to come in and see you just yet. No matter. Syd Wordsmith, you're department head, shall get you both set up."

He walked in and opened up a box by the door. Inside was good sized, silver colored cauldron that sparkled with newness. It didn't really look like any of the cauldrons from the shops. It was rather... muggleish.

"I..." he said, hauling the cauldron over between the two ladies. "Need you both to take a look at this here cauldron. New model. They're experimentin' with stainless steel it seems. Muggle invention. Doesn't corrode and heats up faster."

Syd picked up a form from one of the empty desks in the room and set it on Chiara's desk.

"Just make up a few potions, jot down some notes, rate the thing, and describe any flaws," he said, putting his hands in his pockets.

Chiara rolled her eyes inwardly as he placed it on her desk... Why MY desk! she thought. She flashed him a sweet smile. "Of course Mr. Wordsmith," she said eagerly, "We are here to please... aren't we Lola?"

She pulled a quill and placed it on the parchment. She approached the cauldron and stated out loud, "Chiara Quorra. March 12th 2062. Stainless steel cauldron testing."

The quill began transcribing what she was saying.

Lola was just about to get up when Mr. Wordsmith walked in and left then the strange looking cauldron. "We'll get right to it, sir," Lola reaffirmed.

She got up and headed over to the cauldron. So we just have to break the thing, she thought to herself. She picked it up. "Very sturdy," she noted, watching the quill write her words. She tapped it. "Yes, very, very solid. Couldn't imagine a student being able to carry this to Potions, though. Probably meant for potion development."

She was fairly talented at potions and began to think about a few very quick, but intense potions. Needing to check their supplies, Lola strolled over to a cabinet with many potion-making supplies. Lola's eyes darted over the plentiful ingredients. Not for nothing, but she could produce some potent potions with these supplies.

"Shrivelfig!" Lola squealed. She remembered a particularly memorable potions lesson in which she made a very effective shrinking solution. "Let's make a shrinking potion. Fairly simple, but a good starting point." She grabbed a rather ragged potions book from the cupboard and dropped it on her desk. Skimming through the pages, looking for the instructions, she asked Chiara, "Sound good?"

"Sounds good to me." Chiara wasn't the best at potions... spells on the other hand she was great as. "Do you want to pick up the ingredients while I try to assess pros and cons?" She asked.

Lola shrugged. "Alright, I'm not a big fan of clerical stuff anyway." She got up and ran her finger down the ingredients list.

Pointing her wand at the open cabinet, she quickly said, "Accio daisy roots.Accio shrivelfig. Accio caterpillars. Accio rat spleen. Accio leech juice." With each spell, a different object zoomed across the room and came to a rest on her desk.

Lola let her excitment get to her, and as a result some of the zooming ingredients smashed others in front of them in the cabinet. Lola turned a bright rose. "Oh! I'm so sorry," she apologized to Chiara. "Reparo, reparo, reparo," she spit out, and each broken jar magically fixed itself, contents in tact.

Having learned her lesson, she walked over and grabbed three knives from another cabinet. She charmed them to chop daisy roots, skin shrivelfigs, and slice caterpillars. Over the loud clacking of knives on cutting boards, Lola raised her voice. "So, we're basically playing around all day! Not too bad a job, right?" She wasn't sure if her attempt at small talk was effective. She went back to carefully reading the instructions in the book.

"It's really quite alright," she giggled. "Yes, I guess so. Although, I must confess I am alright at potions... but I am not the best at it."

Lola looked up as the women entered the room. She apparently was their Division head. Putting on her best impression, Lola walked over and held out her hand. "I'm Lola Adams, it's nice to meet you ma'am. We're just testing out this new cauldron that Mr. Wordsmith dropped off. It's made of this muggle metal mixture. Stained Steel, right Chiara?"

Lola walked over, her high heels clacking with each step. She waved her wand and the knives fell with a metallic clank onto her desk. She held up the board with the daisy roots. It was very important they be even. Realizing she never finished explaining what she was doing, Lola addressed her boss. "I suggested making a simple potion first, just to see how quickly it heats up and how it handles normal things. I'm preparing a simple shrinking solution."

She heated the cauldron and filled it with water and dropped in the ingredients, carefully making sure the potion was turning the proper colors. "Potion seems to be progressing faster than usual," Lola noted aloud, watching Chiara's quill jot down the remarks.

After some period of time, though much shorter than usual for this potion, it was a bright green. To the average muggle, this would seem dangerous, but to a wizard, it's color meant it was prepared correctly. "Now, to test it!" She took a tiny dropper and filled it with the liquid. She grabbed a spider from a jar and placed it on her desk. She dropped a little on her desk, and watched as the spider walked over it, presumably somehow drinking it.

Then, suddenly it began to get smaller and smaller, until it was in an egg. "That happened much faster than usual. Interesting. I wonder if this metal has some magical properties and the muggles don't know it."

She walked over to another cabinet labeled 'antidotes', and found a small vial labeled 'Reversing Shrinking Solution'. She took another dropper and dropped some on the egg, and watched the spider grow up, back to normal. She picked it up and put it back in the jar. She waved her wand and the contents of the cauldron vanished. She looked at her desk, frowning at the mess left behind. "Scourgify!, she loudly said, and her wooden desk sparkled with cleanliness.

"OK, well that was fun! Ms. O'Connor, do you have any suggestions for what to try next?" Lola politely inquired. She stood straighter than normal and checked to see if her hair was in place. Making a good impression was very important to her.

Erin Smiled. "I think the phrase would be stainless Steel." She leaned over to watch the potion in action and then suggested. "Try a magical cleaning solution."

Chiara nodded. She turned around and went to get the ingredients. She came back and started working on the measurements.

"So, I was thinking... has anyone ever thought of making a glass cauldron. I know what you are going to say... glass can't be heated safely... but muggles have invented this wonderful type of glass called Pyrex." She suggested.

"That would have to be thoroughly tested, howver I am not sure that it would be good for families with young children." Erin replied, "Little hands are apt to touch and get burned."

"Oh, but Pyrex glass would not conduct the heat... especially not like stainless steel. If we are talking about child safety, well, steel is a high heat conductor, but Pyrex if fairly safe." She said proudly.

Lola sat back as Chiara prepared some of the ingredients. She couldn't help but be amused by the idea of a glass cauldron. She thought about responding to the idea of using muggle glass, but decided against it. Her boss was in the room, after all.

She got up and decided to pick up the cauldron to see how it handled magical contents. "Ouch!" she screamed as her left-hand fingertips touched the metal cauldron. She quickly grabbed a cup from her desk and pointed her wand into the cup. "Aguamenti" she said, and a stream of water flowed out of her wand. She dipped her stinging fingertips into the cup. "It certainly stays hot, longer. Maybe it's the magical flames to heat the cauldron. Muggle creations aren't meant for the wizarding world," Lola said not intending to disparage muggle creations. "I'm sure this stainless steel has its benefits in... What do muggles use it for? Let's make sure the cauldrons don't superheat in the next test."

Lola took her fingers out and they felt better. She sat down in her chair and closed her eyes, trying to relax for a bit.
