The door to the Minister's office is heavy wood and quite imposing. Aside from being a carved masterpiece detailing the history of the founding of the Ministry of Magic, it was also charmed with innumberable spells intended to provide the man or woman inside the office with privacy and safety. It had worked, too, as no Minister had been killed or spied on within these walls in years. Outside of these walls... that was a totally different story.

Once inside the office, the furniture was dark wood and forest green leather. It was a somber place, but very dignified and important. The desk was massive, wrought with brass detailing and a variety of drawers with several locks each. The plate on the desk had scrolling letters:

Brennan A. Cooper, Minister of Magic

The most significant aspect of the office, though, was that it had the traditional magnificent view associated with a man of such rank. Two large windows looked out over the city. It took a careful eye to realize that the first view of London was much higher than any building should be, especially considering the office was underground. The second view revealed itself to not even be a view of London at all. It was Paris, as the Eiffel Tower was visible in the distance.

Mackenzie had been approached at her desk by the Gerald Young, who wished to visit with Minister Cooper to discuss his memo regarding the upcoming World Cup. Mackenzie received the gentleman cordially and asked him to wait by her desk while she spoke with the Minister. Rising from her chair, Mack walked over to the Minister's door and knocked quickly. She awaited the response of the Minister, expecting to hear his voice calling her in. She was never quite sure if she should just enter to inform him of those who wish to speak to him or if she should knock. She had never really asked him for all the time she had been the Senior Undersecretary, and now that it had been so long, she felt foolish to ask. She assumed that since she had knocked for so long that that was what he prefered. She waited patiently by the door.

"Enter, Ms. Marin," Minister Cooper put down his quill and massaged the bridge of his nose. All these tedious little forms, and he was sick of them. If he could just charm them done, he'd do so in a moment.

"Someone to see me?" He could see the young man hovering behind her through the open door.

Mackenzie heard the Minister call her into his office and opened the heavy door. She entered quickly and closed the door partially behind her as she spoke, "Sorry to disturb you, sir, but Mr. Young, the liaison to the Department of Magical Games and Sports, has completed his memo and would like to discuss it with you before sending it out, as you have asked. Shall I send him in?"

"Yes, yes, Marin. Thank you," he fell into the chummy habit he had of calling people by their last name. "Also... could you please arrange a private fitting with Malkin's for sometime in the next few days? I imagine they'll be wanting a picture for our press conference, and polls say that the average witch or wizard feel better able to trust someone wearing tweed."

Gerald gently knocked the door before entered the Room. Once he got the permission, he seemed looking very excited to see the Minister for the first time. The room was neatly arranged and mildly but tastefully decorated. He approached the Minister table and started to speak in his casual way of smile,
"Good morning Sir, I've finished my today's assignment and I need your approval to despatch the Memo to the respective Department" he said as he handed over the Draft to the Minister. He Waited for Minister's words.

Mackenzie nodded and replied, "I'll get in touch with Madam Malkin's right away, sir, and I think tweed is a wonderful choice. I'll show Mr. Young in."

Mackenzie had been heading to the door to open it and welcome Gerald Young into the office when he knocked again, himself. Mackenzie wasn't quite sure of the purpose of this, but opened the heavy door quickly to allow the man to enter. As he entered the room, Mackenzie made her exit and closed the heavy door behind her as quietly as possible.

Shortly after returning to her seat at her desk, Mr. Doyle Branxton arrived to meet with the Minister. Knowing that Minister Cooper was currently discussing matters with Mr. Young, Mackenzie debated whether or not she should interrupt. She knew that Minister Cooper had arranged for this meeting with Mr. Branxton, but at the same time, she hated to disturb him while he was with an employee. She decided to wait until she saw Mr. Young exit the office before she would disturb the Minister again.

Brennan glanced up before accepting the memo. "Good day to you, Mr. Young. Welcome to the Minister's office." He glanced at it for only a moment. "Very good, Mr. Young, but could you be sure to specify in the second question that we need to know how many seats to allocate to the foreign Ministries? We need to know both our allocations as well as each of the other two." He nodded. "Thank you. You may send your final draft down to Sports and Games as soon as you're done."

Gerald listened Minister's words carefully. He turned his glance from the draft to the Minister.
"Thank you, Sir" he quickly replied to his welcome words.
He looked at the draft again and nodded,
"Okay Sir, I'll send it immediately after the correction" he smiled politely and walked towards the door.

Mackenzie heard the door behind her open and watched as Mr. Young exited the Minister's office. Standing from her chair, Mackenzie straightened out her pencil skirt and approached Minister Cooper's door. She knocked again on the heavy wooden door, which was left slightly ajar, and entered into the office. "Sorry to disturb you again, sir, but Doyle Branxton has arrived to speak with you. Also, I have sent a request to Madam Malkin's by owl regarding your private fitting and am awaiting response. In addition, I have completed the memorandum to the Head of Magical Law Enforcement. I'll leave it with you now and perhaps after your meeting with Mr. Branxton we could discuss any possible corrections or additions? Shall I send him right in or do you need a moment?"

Brennan accepted the memo and gave it a brief glance. He knew Marin was top of her game. It was the only way he'd have it. Pretty thing too. "Excellent, Marin. Send that the usual way immediately and watch for her response. I'll see Professor Branxton as soon as he's ready." He stressed the word professor, almost making it sarcastic.

Mackenzie nodded as Minister Cooper accepted her work and requested that she send the memo right along. She was quite pleased that he didn't need to make any corrections or additions to her memorandum; not that she would have minded doing them, but she was simply happy that she needn't spend any more time editing her memo when she had so much to do in planning the press conference, with fairly little time . She replied to the Minister's request, "Thank you, sir. I'll send it right away. And I'll let Professor Branxton know that you are free to meet with him." Mackenzie turned slowly on her skinny black heel, as she often did, and walked to the door. Pulling it open with a bit of effort, Mackenzie then exited the office, leaving the door open a sliver, since Doyle Branxton would be entering soon after her exit.

Doyle opened the door the rest of the way so that he could step through, then shut it carefully behind him before stepping up to Cooper's desk. "Good morning, Minister," he respectfully greeted him. Doyle was nothing if not proper.

"Ah, good day to you, Professor," Brennan glanced up at Doyle and then back at his papers. Obviously the memorandum regarding the need to reorder parchment was of greater importance than anything else at the moment. "And how is the Headmistress faring up at Hogwarts? I hope the term is started well."

"Your sister and nieces are doing quite well," Doyle replied, noting the emphasis he placed on professor. He wasn't entirely sure what Cooper meant by it but, he knew it was nothing good. "The term started without incident." He left off the bit about the food fight.

"Excellent. We here at the Ministry take great pride in knowing that we play host to the most prestigious wizarding learning institution in Europe. It has a fine history, and that is owing, in no small part, to the excellent and esteemed staff gathered there. I'd like to take a personal interest in the school and it's running, and I think you are well placed here at the Ministry to assist me in that."

"Indeed," Doyle muttered. "If I remember correctly, the Ministry has attempted to meddle before and come out the worse for it. Do you doubt the capabilities of your sister?" he asked.

"Now now," Brennan looked up, his eyes flashing with annoyance before he smiled genially. "The Headmistress is a very talented young woman, but she is very young and now has her loyalties split in multiple ways. There have been some concerns expressed regarding the curriculum and her staffing choices, and it is a good time to step in with a firm hand. You'd be well suited to step in, and I know you'd like the chance to be in charge of something again." His tone was slightly patronizing, but Cooper was deadly serious. Best put his old rival in power somewhere else to placate him, and get that meddling girl out of sight again.

Doyle really wasn't entirely sure how to respond to that. So, instead of responding to it, he changed tactics. "The talented young woman is your sister and it might be good if you remembered that more often. Showing up for the wedding was a fine, public, gesture but, would it kill you to be a bit more brotherly and come visit the children once in a while?"

"The Minister of Magic doesn't have a sister. It would be entirely improper to allow familial ties to dictate my relationship with the Headmistress, or the relationship of this office with Hogwarts. I'm sure Cassandra can appreciate that. As for the girls... they shouldn't be there. She should have resigned at their birth, and their presence makes the entire place little more than a nursery school."

Doyle blinked. He had to be joking, though he seemed perfectly serious. He took of his glasses and cleaned them while he thought of a suitable reply. "So, I should inform her that should she wish to be recognized by her brother, she should resign her position as Headmistress and care for the children as any respectable wife would do, in a home?" he asked for clarification on the matter. "You understand she also wishes you to recognize me as your brother in-law?" he asked, though in all honesty, Doyle had not done that much either.

Brennan waved his quill at that statement. He thought little enough of its likelihood. "What happens in your home is your business, Branxton. I should be ashamed to be an employee of my wife, just as I'd be ashamed if I'd married power simply because I was unable to attain it myself..." He trailed off at the thought. "I really am rather disappointed in you, old chap. The poor dear was just a grieving widow, completely fooled by an old man with a grudge and the hunger for power. Let's forget the past, though. Focus on the future of Hogwarts."

"I resent those comments, Cooper," Doyle replied. "No matter what reasons you have for keeping Clara around, do not presume to think that I am using your sister as a means to obtain power."

"I'd thank you not to mention Miss Belle," Brennan answered coolly, looking back down at his parchment. It was easier to control his temper if he didn't have to look at Doyle. Doyle... it had been so nice having him stuck down in the Department of Mysteries. Idiot man. Everyone knew it was the least likely department to produce a Minister of Magic, considering no one knew what you were doing.

"As for the other, perhaps I'm the only one brave enough to say it to your face. It looks suspicious. She was a wounded war hero and a public figure, and you latched onto her. I see no comparison here."

"Latched on," Doyle said. He was outraged and actually felt like throwing or hitting something. The feeling was almost foreign to him, except that one other time... Funny how the same thorn in your side from school could return to plague you again in your adult life. He took a deep breath and cleaned his glasses again. "Think what you like but, for the record, I am deeply in love with your sister. Our relationship developed mutually and was neither planned nor contrived. We have two beautiful daughters who in no way compromise either of our positions. So, you are correct, there is no comparison between my loving family and your relationship of convenience."
