Welcome to The Book Seekers' Book of the Moment for July/August 2023!

If you don't know what Book of the Moment is, you can find more information about it here but, in a nutshell, it's a bi-monthly event, during which we all read the same book and then discuss it. The first month is focused on reading the book, the second is focused on discussing it. This thread is dedicated to the discussion of the book and there will be lots of SPOILERS!!!! You have been warned! If you want to talk about your reading progress in a spoiler-free environment, this thread is the place for that, and it is always open and active so you can read at your own pace. When you have finished the book and are ready to talk spoilers to your heart's content, you should post in this thread. You can post in this thread at any time during the two months, but the Official™ discussion won't take place until the start of the second month. Don't fret if you're reading the book after that date ― you can add to the discussion at any time!

The next two months, we will be focusing on reading A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson. This YA mystery thriller is the first in a trilogy that has spawned a spin-off series of books AND is being adapted into a TV show!

So I just finished this book and oh my gosh I loved it. Writing wise, I think the voice throughout the book was really spot on to how a 17 year old would be writing this entire sequencing of events. Like even the 3rd person point of view bits just sounded like Pippa's narrating the whole story to us and I really loved that. Also the adding bits of research here and there to ends of chapters? Beautiful. I am obsessed too with the way she played with how the words appear on the page towards the end of the book so that you really feel as discombobulated as Pippa must have felt in that moment.

The mystery itself was also really well done. I usually have a hard time with books like this, because the ending is predictable. And I genuinely thought in the beginning this one was going to be as well (my money was on our janitor turned cop friend). But I only pieced it fully together when Pippa did and I love finding that in a book!

Also really just enjoyed Ravi and Pip's overall banter. The themes and story of this book are heavy but their conversations really helped to lighten things up a little!

I'm very excited to start the next book, because there are definitely still some questions I have unresolved about some of our other POI's and I'm excited to see what the author does with their underlying stories!

I agree with everything you said! I really loved the little bits of research and the interviews. I too switched my opinion on who was the murderer about fifty times while reading it! Which to me is the indication of a good mystery, when the author sets up quite a few trials and you have to figure out which one is the right one. I kind of figured it was going to be revealed that two people were involved, but did NOT see one of the reveals coming!

I also love Ravi and Pip. I think she wrote Ravi's character really well. I can't imagine how hard it must be on a young man IRL to have to go through all that, and the way she showed him handling his emotions regarding it all was so well done.
