Atticus's Attic First & Secondhand Music ShopExplore the music, both magic and mundane, and maybe create some of your own. Who knows what new sounds you might find?
The most important area of the shop is also the largest and usually most jam-packed. Wide metal tables take up the majority of the shop, each one laden with albums both old and new in various forms. There are so many tables that they are very carefully set up to just barely allow enough space for customers to walk past each other in the makeshift aisles. The tables, while regularly fixed to the floor, have the added benefit of being able to be banished to the back room by the shopkeeper to open up the floor space for shows and events. Unfortunately, this means that with each visit, you may find yourself searching for the table you wish to find, as it could turn up in a different area each day.
All types of recording media can be found on these tables - some are full of records, their jackets carefully arranged to be flipped through without damaging the vinyl within. Others are stacked with cassette tapes, the spines of their plastic casings turned upward to display the names of bands and albums. More still bear old compact discs in their jewel cases, in mint condition unless labeled otherwise. While not as plentiful, 8-track tapes and shellac records can also be found as well; the appropriate devices to play all of these things, paired with large over-ear headphones, can also be found at each table.
While a great many of the tables are dedicated to well-known Muggle recording formats, a fair amount of them are also dedicated to "item albums" as well. Small boxes bearing a band and album name litter these tables, stacked together haphazardly; inside are items the size of a knut, varying in colour and shape dependent on the box's label. A single tap with a wand will cause the album to begin to play aloud; should one choose to, the album can also be stuck behind the ear to be played privately, so as to not disturb others.
Feel free to browse and sample music from bands both new & old, Muggle & Wizard. Just remember - you break it, you bought it, and some of the items could turn out to be fairly pricey.
Cornelius Orion Baltazar was a FREE man. Last summer he'd been grounded for speaking his mind -- when parents say to speak what's on your mind and then ground you -- and had spent most of his days locked up at the Baltazar estate. This summer though, it was different.
Was F R E E .
So here he was. At the music shop. Which wasn't a strange thing. When the boy wasn't out on the pitch he was following beats. On this specific summer day, the curly-head bopped his head into the shop, fingers tapping a beat on his thighs. Deeper into the shop he went, Cornelius spotted a familiar curly head bro.
Corbin Stemp. The dude who'd helped him drop water balloons on girls with white shirts. On accident, of course. One of the two was trying to catch them and 'unfortunately' dropped them. Woopsie!
"Hey, Corb. 'Sup?" Cool bro nod. Long time no see.
A Moon Shaped Pool. That couldn't be all they had, right? It was definitely not what he wanted right now, so Corb dropped it back amongst the other records and moved on to the item albums, sorting through the boxes methodically. Probably the only shop he'd be careful in, in all honesty - music was precious, after all.
He fumbled with a red one, bringing the box up to his eyes to inspect it closer, when he heard a voice behind him. Taking a moment to replace the box carefully, eventually the fourteen year old turned around. "Oh, hey, Cornelius." With a nod of his own, Corbin returned his gaze to the table, the corners of his mouth turning up into a smirk that could only have come from memories.
"Not grounded this summer?"

Summer was always the best time. Natalia couldn't be having a better summer. Her internship was going great and she had gotten so many opportunities with it, but she still liked being at the shop and she enjoyed being around Atticus. Hello did people see the man and how hot he was? Plus he knew so much about music and was really cool to work for.
She had walked into the shop and started to look around. It was her day off, but of course Natalia was drawn to the music and to the shop. Her eyes moved towards the bands. She knew all the musicians by heart and knew the order they were all in. Finding some that weren't put back correctly automatically Nat was rearranging the items.
So maybe she was a bit obsessive of things being in place, it wasn't a bad thing now was it.
To be honest, Atticus had his reservations about hiring Natalia this summer. It wasn't that she had done a bad job last year, in fact the opposite was true. And she was awfully nice eye candy. But he knew how busy summer would be in Diagon Alley and having her here on the weekends probably wasn't enough. He wasn't so sure he wanted to hire two people though and she didn't need any training, so he decided the weekend would work out. Maybe he just liked her that much. He did have a few applications on file if anything urgent came up though.
Today saw steady business though and as he was the only one working today, Atticus made his rounds through the store to offer any assistance as needed and make sure no one was attempting to shoplift. He did have charms in place for that, but there was at least one kid every summer who tried to be cute. He smirked as he noticed Natalia in the store arranging some of the merchandise and he headed over. "Just can't stay away, can you?"

She smirked hearing his words before looking up. She was going to put the last away before looking at him. "Face it you know you couldn't function without me." Her brown eyes finally lifting as she smiled at him. "I had stopped by the candy shop after I got done at the record label and thought I'd just pop in for that new Dead Kneazle shirt I've had my eye on all week." Glancing over at it she wasn't going to be leaving without it.
She half wondered if he had noticed her leave with a guy the other night after her shift, but she wasn't going to say nor was she going to explain if he did. "Looks like you could use some help. Want me to stay until closing?" She could send a message to Cal so he knew that she picked up a few hours. They didn't really do much but hangout at her house anyway, so he could do that until she got back.
James walked into the shop, thinking he could just chill out here than anywhere else in the area. Honestly, he couldn't afford most of the things in his Hogwarts list. He left his small London apartment home with the amount of money he saved a few months back. With only 8 galleons in his pockets, he knew they weren't enough to buy the books listed for his fifth-year studies. Second-hand books were his only option. Glancing at his list again, he crossed out new school robes because no way was he able to afford them. Whatever...he could make do with his old school uniforms or hand-me-downs they got from the salvation army across town, his mom could bleach them or something to make them brand new again. So here he was, wondering if he could find any good music. The Dead Kneazles? Clearly, he had no idea who were all these British wizarding bands and why they looked all funny...and hairy. Urgh. His grandmother dressed better than them. Come on...now, where were all the current music at?

Music was life. It literally kept Anthony's head 'above water' some days. Not that he would admit that. So the music shop was a must go to. His bookbag was firmly put on his back. He was a foster kid so didn't have much and sometimes... took... what he wanted. Survival. His eyes looked around the music shop and came to rest on a person in there.
Hmm.
Maybe he would be able to use him as a distraction of sorts if he found something he wanted. Heading over to, Anthony looked over at what he was looking at. "TDK? Eh. I've heard better music." He told the guy before offering him a crooked grin. First two was to make an acquaintance.

James looked over his shoulder. Eh? He blinked at the boy who looked to be the same age as he was. "You heard of The Dead Kneazles before? Really? Are they any good? I've never heard of them." Shrugging, he tossed the CD album back to where he first found them. "What better music have you heard?" he asked the guy, raising an eyebrow.

Woah.
Okay...what WERE half of these things?
Picking up one of the record jackets, Derf pried it open with his fingers and peeked inside at the...er...large flat black donut-y thing. He TOTALLY knew about muggle things...just needed to, er, remember what exactly this was.
Brian was really here to look for a few scores, and maybe try his hand (or hands, or hand and bow arm) at some magical music. Or the fusion type. Because he was honestly getting a little bored with his repertoire. So he was extremely purposeful, striding into the store - until he saw someone holding what looked to be a record disk.
A real life record disk.
Honestly, what was life? This stuff had to be at LEAST a century old, and nobody even had a thing that played those - a grammyphone? - anymore. His ma still laughed at her parents for their affection for compact disks, and those were still far more advanced than the thing the kid was holding. So uh. Don't mind him so much, he was just going to stare quizzically at the boy holding the thing. Yeah. No big deal or anything.

There was that smirk. It was a silent signal to the teenager. Yep, memories. LOL.
"Too early to sing victory," Cornelius smirked, green eyes browsing the table. In other words, he wasn't making any promises to behave. It just wasn't in his nature to keep still and be the good boy. That was far too boring. He tried it once. For four seconds.
"How's it so far for you?" And was there anything fun he could get his hands on?

'You mean you havent? They are big around here. Apparently some went to Hogwarts once upon a time. Probably a century ago." Anthony told the boy while moving up next to him and picking through some of the music. "That depends on what you like. What genre are you into?" Really. Where was the help around this store? They should be the one helping a brother out.
"Im Anthony. I dont work here but ... music is one of my things." His backpack was full of wizarding and muggle music... and of course his whole life. He never took his backpack off unless it was to shower or sleep. It stayed with him at all times.
"So your favorite genre?" Anthony asked while shifting through the music. He'd find something for this kid.

Olivia had been shocked when she had found out that there was a music shop in Diagon Alley. Simon had never mentioned this place was here. With widened eyes, she headed into the shop, desperately looking for a label that she knew. She was more familiar with muggle brands; however, she did enjoy listening to Melanie Sung and TDK (The Dead Kneazles). It was all dependent on her mood.
She eyed the music tables, filled with so many records. THERE WAS SO MUCH HERE!! Maybe there was a new band that she could discover. However, she first HAD to check if TDK had a new album out. If they did, then that would be an excellent early birthday present for herself. Humming to herself, Olivia ran her fingers through the albums, trying to find one a TDK album. It had to be there. It just had to be.

James shook his head. "Nope. Well they're not popular in the states that's for sure." To be brutally honest, he couldn't care less about the band history but since he was somewhat nice enough to explain it to him, he spared the guy his attention. He nodded when he finished. "I see. Seems like everyone I bumped into here are from Hogwarts." An amused smirk played across his single pierced lips. "Are you one too?"he asked. James didn't need to wait long before the boy introduced himself next. He nodded in greeting back. "James." Yup, he was one of those types who preferred short introductions so less talking involved about himself.
"Genre? Anything really. I don't have a particular type I stick to for long, but I do listen to club remixes a lot, though. What about you?" James asked the boy named Anthony.

The states. Anthony had recognized that his accent wasn't one from here. But he couldn't pinpoint where his accent was from, from the states. Not that he was trying really hard either. He could care less to be honest.
Anthony also, wouldn't consider himself a Hogwartian. It wasn't the worst school he went to, but he wasn't overjoyed to be going there either. He was more indifferent. As long as he could do what he needed to do, then he was okay. "Ill be going there this year coming up." Anthony offered while pulling out a CD. He slid it behind another CD, being casual. "What about you?" Conversation. He just needed the conversation to continue.
Club remixes. It'd been awhile since Anthony had been out to a club. But with Stephen in town, he was sure to get into something. He needed a good... freeing night. He'd been cooped up too long. "I'm good with anything but oldies, blues, and country." Country made his skin crawl. Ugh.

Just a few days left before she left for California, and Hadley decided she needed some new music for the long flight from London to the west coast of the US. Eleven and a half hours including the layover at JFK the flight over. The flight back had a considerably a longer layover and would be fourteen hours. Fun.
So yeah, music was a must. And Hadley was really into Wizard bands right now. There lied the problem. She wanted to listen to new albums from her favorite bands, but also had to keep it muggle friendly. Not only was she using muggle transportation, her muggle twin sister was bringing a muggle friend along that had no idea magic, and witches and wizards existed.
So basically she was looking for a way to get magical music onto a muggle music device. Easy, right?
Hadley sighed and wandered the tables. A small smile crossed her lips and shook her head. Over X-mas break last term, Hadley had visited this shop with her Mom, and Hadley had to ask her about all the different formats. Even her Mom didn't really know them. They had to look them up online when they got home.
What a wizarding music shop was doing with century old muggle musical formats that predated her grandparents was something she'd never understand, but it was a quirk that always made her smile.

"Cool. I guess we'll be seeing each other a lot next term. I'm originally from llvermorny...but my mom got a job offer here so she thought it be better if I go there. Nearer I suppose." But James was dreading it. Changing schools meant unfamiliar faces and more galleons to be spent on new school robes. The only thing he looked forward to is the free food provided by the school. For another three years, James didn't need to worry about not having enough food in his stomach which was pretty damn great to be honest.
"You don't like any of them?" He chuckled. "I guess you're right, I don't listen to any of that old stuff too. Do you play music?" he asked, interested to know if the guy can play instruments.

Duuude.
There was a music shop here! Brent looked around, almost sure he'd see his brother Kane in here somewhere. He didn't, but that didn't mean the younger Westwood wasn't around. Brent flipped his hair back and entered the shop. Surely there had to be some pretty cool wizarding tunes in here! He could only hope. Quodpot, or Quidditch at the very least, had been the silver linings to him having to move here from America. Now that he'd figured out both were pretty much a no-go, music was really one of the only things left.
Approaching the displays, he began combing the selections for someone he knew. Ohh, cool! He actually knew all most of these. Brent picked up a selection by The Dead Kneazles and started to look it over. Only, he must have picked it up too quickly, because he dropped it, and it landed safely on the floor by some girl. Perfect, Brent. Way to look like a loser in front of somebody who looks your age."Uhh, sorry about that," he said. "Guess I got a little too excited about there being a music store here."

Anthony's eyes ventured around the shop as he pretended to listen to what was coming out of this boy's mouth. "Oh yeah. Cool." He said before he realized what he actually said. So he was going to be new.... did this mean he might have a new customer? He looked at the boy with more interest.
"Mm. No. The oldies don't cut it for me." He said with a slight smirk. "Are you new in town too?" He asked... wondering if he could show him a few... spots he knew. "I play the harmonica." It was hard to actually play instruments when you didn't have any money to get them... and stealing them nowadays was almost impossible. "If you heard me play, youd be jealous." Yeah, he was owning that.

Aha!
A band that began with the letter S! She was getting closer to TDK. She had to complete her mission the whole world waited on her. Determined to find it, Olivia ignored the students that had passed her until she heard the sound of something hitting the floor. The only moment she looked away was when she heard the soft thump of plastic hitting the floor. She glanced over to the noise to find that a boy around her age had dropped a selection of The Dead Kneazles. Merlin's Beard! Sacrilege! To drop such a phenomenal band on the floor..... How dare he! she thought for a moment and was prepared to give the boy a good talking to. Oh yes, no one dropped.... She turned around and stopped straight in her tracks... Wow. He was kind of cute .....and obviously had good taste in music. AHEM. Olivia glanced away to the album so that she wouldn't stare. But the album.... She'd let him get away with dropping a TDK album on the floor.... just this once.
Besides, it wasn't a big deal and he probably felt horribly embarrassed by the whole situation.
"It's okay," she said with a small smile as she bent down to pick up the album. She checked the album. Yep, no marks on it at all. This guy was lucky. "Looks like there isn't any damage to the album if that helps," she said with a grin and then glanced over her shoulder. Was the shopkeeper paying them any heed? Hmm.. She couldn't see him. "And the shopkeeper isn't nearby or he doesn't seem to be at the moment. So I think you're alright." Olivia gave the other boy a grin and nodded in agreement with his previous statement with this store being so exciting. "This place is exciting. I didn't know there was a music shop here in Diagon Alley. I just had to come check it out and take a break from school shopping for Hogwarts." It was good to take a break from all that shopping and listening to music whilst she wrote was one of her favourite hobbies. Olivia glanced down at the selection that she had picked up and realized it was still in her hands. "Oh." Whoops. She held out to him. "This is yours. Nice choice by the way. TDK is one of my favourite Wizarding bands."

"You know what fis is-s?" he asked, one eye still pressed to the tiny little hole. "Or how muggles hid mus-s-sic in it?"
.... oh crap.
Had he been staring too hard? For too long, too, perhaps? Yeah, that was probably it, but he was busy being confused at the younger boy's confusion and there hardly seemed any time for artificial niceties when he was as bamboozled as a deer in a suburb. What was the child trying to do?
Oh, wait. Was the kid asking him? HIM, BRIAN WOODS, HIM?
Well. He asked for it. "It's a grammerphone - I think it was a grammerphone. Or was it gramophone?- record disk," he said, nodding at the thing in his new companion's hand. "Extremely old muggle technology. Decades before the stuff my grandparents grew up on, compact disks. Compact disks were basically this, only smaller - compact, y'see? - and playable on a slightly less bulky machine. The thing this disk does, though, is that it's put on a gramophone which kinda looks like the lovechild of a tuba and a table and they put a needle down on the surface."
Had he lost him? Yeah, maybe. "So what happens is the disk starts spinning and the different ridges you see on the top cause the metal of the tuba part of the gramophone to vibrate at different frequencies. So vibrations result in these mechanical waves that travel through the air - sound waves - which is basically what you hear in the end." Nod nod. "But nobody's used them in over a hundred years. It's extremely outdated tech. Now we've got digital versions which record sound much much more accurately."
......... too much information, maybe? "Lots of people keep them as collector's items, though." Please tell him the boy hadn't zoned out and gone to sleep. Brian just liked his ancient tech.
Atticus chuckled as he leaned against the display table. "There might be some truth to that." He could admit that Nat did a great job while she was here and he did kind of wish that she wanted to work more than weekends. But he could understand why not and he'd probably do the same had he that opportunity at her age. "Well, don't let me stop you. I'm sure you could find a few other things you can't live without while you're here. We just got a new shipment in yesterday." And she was also as good as any other paying customer.
He didn't pay much attention to her personal life, or what she did while she was off, mostly because it didn't concern him. Things like that never did as he was a go with the flow kind of guy. But if she wanted to hang around, he certainly wouldn't stop her. She could stay as long as she liked. "I knew you couldn't get enough of me," he smirked, joking. "Sure, that'd be great if you could stay a while."

She grinned as he leaned on the counter. Truth be told she really liked working here with him. It was fun, there was music, and he was hot. "Of course there is. Just remember that while I'm at school for my final term. Since you can't work this place without me maybe you'll hire me on for more then just summer while I'm hopefully at WADA." She still had to apply and get in, but maybe she could work here part time while she did that? Though she was hoping she might end up with some record deal possibly with this internship.
"A new shipment you say? Maybe I'll have to help sort it and see what we got." He knew her weakness and she didn't at all enjoy it, okay maybe she did. She bought so much from this shop alone when she was home. It was a wonder her entire paycheck didn't just go back to it. Not that he would complain money was money so he should be excite she spent so much of it.
A blush might have crossed her face as he said about her not being able to stay away from him. How did he know? "It pays to have hot artist pictures up where you work all the time." He was an artist and his picture probably was around here some where so not a full lie. Plus Nigel Barrington was a poster she purposefully put above the counter the other day. "No problem I can stay." She'd have to put her purse down and glancing around there were two boys that she didn't feel could be trusted at the moment. Maybe she'd keep her eye on them.
"Oh I'm going to put The Sirens on the recording schedule to. We want to do a bit before the talent show like we did last year." That was coming up quickly.

Brent lifted his gaze to meet the girl's eyes. The album had hit the floor right at her feet, and no way was he going to scoop it up there. It'd just be awkward, especially since they didn't know each other. Instead, he did the whole hair flip thing and then waited for her to make the next move. For a second there, he kind of thought she was going to go mad on him. Girls could be that way sometimes. They'd be perfectly fine one moment then on a rampage about something the next. Perfect. He'd angered some girl in the middle of Diagon Alley on his very first day here.
...and then she surprised him, causing him to pass a smile in her direction. So the album was okay? Cool! That meant he didn't have to waste his money buying an album that would never work. "Yeah?" he casually asked, looking over . "Awesome. The Dead Kneazles are cool, but I don't want to throw away money buying an album that'll never work." He could just hear his dad now, giving him a whole speech about the value of a galleon and how Brent should be more careful with things. He looked over his should and noted that the shopkeeper did indeed seem to be busy, and the girl had taken care of the album, so all was good.
"I didn't know there was a music shop here either," he admitted, "but that's because I just moved here from America. I didn't know that any of the shops were here." Diagon Alley was pretty cool during the summertime. There were loads of kids his age to hang out with! "Hogwarts?" Brent grinned. "I'll be there, too. Incoming fourth year." He shook his head. "I don't think I'll be buying anything today. Just looking, but thanks. It's your's if you want it." As an afterthought, he added, "I'm Brent, by the way."

He had a nice smile. This guy seemed friendly which was good! Olivia liked meeting friendly people. Glancing down at the album momentarily, she listened to his comment and nodded in agreement. Yes, wasting money on album that wouldn't work was never a good thing. She had learned that lesson a while ago when she had been convinced to buy a product at a mall that was supposed to make her hair slightly less frizzy but it was a total rip off. It hadn't done anything. Oh well. She had learned her lesson. Do more research. "That's completely understandable."
Woah, woah, woah. Hold up. He said that he had just moved here from America? "Well welcome to England if no one has said that yet. I'm originally from Australia. It's only sunny occasionally but mostly the stereotypes about rain are true," she said with a chuckle. "Which part of the States are you from? What's it like? Were you at Illvermorny? Oh Merlin. I'm asking you so many questions so quickly. Sorry." She chuckled as her cheeks turned the slighest shade of pink. She just was so intrigued by the United States as she had never been to the States. Despite having watched a lot of American television shows, Olivia wondered what it was like and debated whether or not the shows accurately depicted the country or culture.
She grinned a little more when he said that he was also attending Hogwarts and was going to be an incoming fourth year. "Same here! I'm an incoming fourth year too!" It was nice to meet someone in her year. Perhaps the two of them could be friends? Brent seemed pretty cool. Olivia glanced at album once more. She didn't have that one yet and it could totally complete her collection of TDK. "Then I'll definitely take it. Thanks. I came in here looking for a new TDK album and this is perfect." And this guy had found it and flung it almost at her. Talk about luck. Brent was his name? Brent from the States. She smiled at him. "Nice to meet you, Brent. I'm Olivia."

Just LOOK at the equipment there! It looked like the perfect place for the kids who were trying to be unique and act as though they secretly belonged in the 1800s when they really didn't. He picked up a compact disk and eyed it, a look of complete and utter confusion on his face. This was worse than having to sit through a double period of Ancient Runes.
Setting the disk down, the fifteen year old wandered over towards another section, right near some girl he hardly even recognised. Aside from a glance over, she wasn't noticed much or taken into consideration as he started flipping through the music there. No need, was there? Every now and then, he'd pick up an album, only to pull an expression and set it back in its place.
Nah, nope, no way, had that, maaaaaaybe, eh, got that, definitely not.....
ON and on it went until.........
........ "Hey, recommend anything good?" To the girl beside him. Hey. Help a guy out, will you?

Hadley hadn't even noticed she wasn't alone anymore until the boy spoke. He looked sorta familiar. Student at Hogwarts? Probably. "Huh? Oh, uh..." Hads tucked her long, red hair behind her ear. "Honestly, you probably know more about wizarding bands than I do." She'd only been introduced to wizarding bands last summer, and then, of course, spent all the time between then and now in Hogwarts.
"Depends on what kind of music you like, I guess?" She gave him an apologetic shrug. "Mostly, I'm trying to figure out how to convert albums from magical format, to something more muggle friendly..." And failing, mostly, by the way. She was gonna be spending the month of August with her Dad in California. Also with her Dad's new muggle girlfriend. And her muggle twin sister's best friend. Neither knew about magic, or wizards and witches, and yeah. She had to keep it that way. And listening to music on a magical device, didn't really do that.
That and her long hair was annoying her today as it kept slipping out from behind her ear and obscuring the view of the albums as she browsed.
