The Astronomy classroom was brightly lit, perhaps a little too brightly lit for nearing midnight. It seemed Kalen was trying all sorts of different ways to keep the students awake and attentive in the late hour. A cool January breeze drifted through one of the open windows of the tower, giving the room a comfortable if not slightly chilly feel. Everything looked normal enough though, the desks were arranged how they usually were, in neat rows with names on them. Assigned seating was preferred by this Professor.
There was however a small door at the back of the room that wasn’t usually there, now where could that lead to?
As for Kalen himself, he could be found leaning against his desk, ankles crossed as he waited for his students to arrive. A small smile on his face, earlier he had been disappointed by the clouds obscuring the view of the lesson tonight, but the Librarian had found a way around it and he was most pleased with himself.
Come on in and find a seat! Class will begin soon!
OOC: Welcome to the first Astronomy class! Feel free to have their assigned seat anywhere you would like. Just remember that even though this is the first Rp’d class this is not your first class with Professor Kennedy! Come on in, say Hi and we will continue on in about 24 hours.. ish! Also please keep the chatting to a minimum! Class has started! All late comers were face IC consequences, so feel free to pretend like your Charrie was here all along.
Professor Kennedy's raised eyebrow didn't go unnoticed by the second year, but since he wasn't taking points off or anything, she didn't really care. Zoryn was funny, and the professor clearly didn't want any answers that weren't all serious and stuff -- maybe especially from Zoryn -- which was no fun and stuff. Not that Astronomy was usually much fun anyways; Emmeline only really liked it when they got to look at the sky and observe pretty things, but the TONS of theory involved in this subject was guaranteed to bore the Gryffindor almost to tears.
She only half-listened to all of Professor Kennedy's talking and stuff after all, realllly only paying attention to his new question. She had absolutely noooo idea what the answer was at all, so she started flipping through their textbook at lightning!speed to find the star names. See, she could totally do this school thing and stuff. After a few minutes of skimming and trying realllly hard not to yawn, Emmeline raised her hand and added, "There's Mintaka too, Professor." She wasn't going to say anything more than the star's name, though, 'cause the textbook had too much information written about it and she didn't feel like reading so much, mhm.

Orion. That was a pretty name. Though she probably shouldn't have been concentrating on the name. It was more important about the content, rather than how pretty the name. She was sure the person who had named the constellation hadn't been thinking about how pretty the name was. Though if she ever got to name anything, she would totally be thinking about pretty the name was. But for now, she tried to not get distracted by that. The fifth year was quiet for a few minutes, writing down the answers that her class mates were saying. Sometimes it was easier to just be quiet and write the correct answers down.
Now. Did she have anything to add. She looked at her list, seeing what answered had already been said. She didn't want to repeat anything. Ooh. Ther were a few. She smiled, putting her hand into the air "I believe that Alnitak is also one of the stars that makes up Orion" But that wasn't such a pretty name though.

The mysterious door was rather distracting which Henry might admit was kind of silly. It was just a door, after all. But Charlotte seemed curious about it also, and it didn't help that Professor Kennedy drew attention to it as well, without saying what it would be used for. At least he knew it wasn't a portal to an alternate universe, which he was thankful for. Very thankful for. But that only distracted him more, in a much worse way.
Sitting next to Charlotte helped calm his thoughts, though he wasn't paying that close attention to the class discussion questions. Did it really matter what his favorite constellation was? He wasn't sure he had one specific one in mind anyway and there were plenty of other answers. He idly doodled his own galaxy in the margins of his parchment as he listened to the story of Orion. That was sort of interesting as he thought that of many of the myths behind the constellation names. Perhaps he'd make up a story behind one of the imaginary ones on the side of his paper. Or not.
He lifted his eyes at the next question, but he could not answer that without looking in his book. And plenty of other people answered so maybe he didn't need to anyway. Instead, he waited for what would come next, and stole a couple more glances at the door.

Yes he knew what and where the Orion constellation was, as it was dead center of the night sky at one of their hotels in Asia. And the only star he was familiar with there, Betelgeuse, was already named by Kitty. That brought a smile to his face since now his mind has drifted off to the Muggle movie of the same phonetics....

When the next question was asked, Shay raised her hand immediately. She knew this and was determined to reply before all of the answers were given."One of the stars of Orion is Bellatrix." That one was easy to remember because of its evil namesake Bellatrix Lestrange. Shay supposed that her family must have been big Astronomy fans, given the celestial names that were frequently found among its members. Yeah, she paid attention in History of Magic. Continuing on, Shay added, "I believe that that star is located on Orion's left shoulder."
Kalen nodded, “That is correct Miss Morrison, Bellatrix is a part of Orion, and it is the left shoulder, though remember he is facing us so it looks like it’s on the right. ” He said with a nod.

He was a bit disappointed because he was really hoping to see it, that was his favorite part of astronomy class, gazing at the stars.
He raised his hand, "I know one is called Rigel. Isn't it one of the really bright ones?" he wasn't sure about his question, but he did remember the name of the one star, otherwise he was completely lost.
Kalen nodded. “Rigel is the left foot, though it looks like it’s on the right, and it’s the seventh brightest star in the night sky. ” He said with a nod.

That being said, Natalie didn't really know the answer to the teacher's question. "All I've ever really paid attention to is the belt... but I don't know what they're called." Actually, she didn't even know what the rest of Orion looked like, so...
Kalen nodded as she spoke, “The belt is one of the most recognizable parts of this constellation so that is no surprise. Thank you for your answer Miss McKinley.” He said with a smile.

She'd been stargazing with her parents. When she first heard the name she fell in love with it. And then there was a certain old Muggle movie that had the same name which she also felt a connection with.
Kalen grinned as Kitty spoke, he might have figured that. “It is the right shoulder, though you see it on the left, and the tenth brightest star in the sky, not a bad favorite star to have.” He said with a nod.”It does sound very beautiful.”

The next question was about Orion's stars and Clara began wracking her brain for something. It was awfully familiar and she was sure she had read it in a book somewhere. She squinted her eyes in concentration, trying very hard to remember.
Orion, Orion...what are your stars?
She rubbed her stomach lightly as it gave an odd grumble, remembering the Peppermint Toad she had eaten earlier that day. Maybe that wasn't the best thing to get from Hogsmeade. Suddenly, a lightbulb went off inside her head and she raised her hand high as she responded, "Mintaka is one of the stars of Orion, right? I think it might be part of Orion's belt, but I'm not sure..."
She knew Astronomy wasn't her strong suit. She always struggled with the little details of everything. Fortunately, the word "peppermint" led her to "Mintaka". Thank you, food.
Kalen nodded. “Mintaka is Indeed part of Orion’s Belt, very good answer.” He said with a nod.

So with this in mind, she chose not to answer the next question. 'Cause he would probably find some way to make it about him again. Why the heck would she need Astronomy in the real world!?!? It made NO sense. Both the subject AND the class requirement. Neither made sense.
So instead, she just sat quietly, a first, but desperate times y'know?

Just like now. The stars in Orion's constellation? Maybe she did know it at one point but not currently.
Blue eyes shifted to the window. With a cloudy sky, all she could see was darkness but it would serve as a distraction all the same. She would simply wait for the question to change to something she knew the answer to and if she didn't know the answer to the next one either...well....the Ravenclaw was about to get a whoooole lot quieter.
Idly, her thoughts drifted back to the door and her gaze followed shortly after. What WAS that door meant to do? Where would it lead? How did it relate to Orion?
How much longer would she have to wait to know?

He didn't really know what he was talking about in this class anyway. Shoulda picked a constellation with a creature rather than a shape, clearly.
As for the question, again, the Hufflepuff became crestfallen because he did not know. He supposed he could flip through his textbook though and find the answer there? Which was what he started to do...only to get distracted reading about Serpens and Ophiuchus.

The quiet ones got a look, but he was just glad they seemed to be mostly paying attention, and at least Zoryn was quiet and not disturbing anyone, so there was that.
Kalen nodded and smiled as most everyone tried to name some sort of Star from the brightest seven stars of Orion.
“Very good everyone, now. ” Kalen walked over to his blackboard and after waving his wand, a picture of Orion in the Night sky came down so the entire class could see it. “Now this is Orion as one would see with the naked eye. Remember he is facing us, so when I say right shoulder, it’ll be here, on the left. The right shoulder, here.. ” He said as he pointed to the bright yellowish orange star on the left. ”Is Betelgeuse, a red supergiant star and the tenth brightest star in the sky. Next is Bellatrix, his left shoulder there on the right, Rigel, his left foot here on the right, is the seventh brightest star in the sky and Saiph is Orion’s right foot. ” He said as he pointed to it. “Then we have the belt, which is comprised of Alnilham, Alnitak and Mintaka. ” He said as he pointed to the stars as he said their names.
“These are the seven brightest stars in Orion. And they make up the hourglass shape of this constellation. There are more stars of course in this constellation, and if it were clear we would be looking through our telescopes to see the Orion Nebula which is located in Orion’s sword, Here.” He said as he pointed to the fuzzy looking star in the middle of Orion’s sword. ”We will be studying this more in the upcoming weeks, but for tonight, we will be focusing on these seven main stars. “ He said as he moved from the blackboard to stand in front of his desk.
“Now, since we can’t see the sky tonight, we will have to bring the sky to us. But first in order to do that, we will need to conjure stars.” Kalen grinned and with a wave of his hand the lights in the room dimmed just a bit. He took out his wand, traced a star pattern in the air and said “Stellaris.”. A small sparkly ball of light appeared before him and it flashed yellow, red, white and blue at different intervals. “Of course this isn’t an actual star, but a good facsimile for what we will be using it for. Pretty fun in the dark as well. ” He said with a grin.
“Now I want you all to practice this spell, the wand motion is fairly simple, just trace a star in the air, and the incantation is easy. It’s Stellaris. Stell-AIR-is. Now let’s practice the wand movement and the incantation for a bit, before trying to conjure the stars okay?” He said as he dimmed the lights in the room a bit more.
“Everyone up, I want to see you practicing. If you need any help, I’ll be right here.” He said as he leaned against his desk.
OOC: Thanks everyone for answering and welcome to the mini activity! You just need to practice the incantation and the wand motion and then try to conjure the “star”, no minimum post count for this, feel free to do it in one post or five! Just label the posts if you have more than one. If you need Kalen put his name up in the header! Thanks! Class will move on in about 72 hours or soThanks!!

OOOoooh, they would be making their OWN STARS? That was COOL. Maybe she could put some of these in her dorm as decoration or as a night light or something. She wanted starts in her four poster bed. Natalie quickly jotted down the notes of the stars they were learning about and drew a little diagram of Orion, labeling each of the brightest stars.
When she was finished taking notes, Natalie set down her quill and traded it for her wand. "Stellaris," she said a couple times to get comfortable with the word. Then they had to draw a star with the incantation, right? So, Natalie worked on that next. It was quite a long little wand wave, drawing a whole star out. But it made sense.
"Stellaris," she said again, drawing a star. A little fizzle of light sparked out of her wand, but there was no sign of a star yet.
Yay, Hamlet! • Cathopper • Disney Fanatic • I was normal once...
Flynn rested his elbows on his desk and used his hands to rest his head upon as he watched Professor Kennedy display a picture of Orion on the blackboard. He was secretly a nerd for Astronomy, and that was so cool. He only wished that the sky was not cloudy tonight so they could actually look up at the REAL stars, but he guess he could settle for this as long as it didn't become the norm.
When it was time to practice the spell, he pulled his wand out of his bag. This spell sounded easy enough.
He outlined a star in the air before him (or what he thought looked like a star), and he did that a few times before using the incantation with it. "Stellaris," he said. "Stillares?" No. "Stellaris." He repeated that word a few more times before using it alongside the attempted drawing of the star.
He expected something awesome to happen - LIKE A STAR! - but instead sparks jetted out of his wand. That was still awesome but....

OOOH they were going to be making STARS?! How fun! The wand movement was kind of fun - she felt like she was making firecracker shapes in the air like she did that one time she was in America for their Independence Day celebration thing. She practiced the star movement first - easy enough - then the incantation. "Stellaris!" she muttered a few times under her breath. Easy to pronounce too.
Finally, after a few tries, she gave it a shot. "Stellaris!" she exclaimed as she made the star motion. There were only a few sparks that came out of her wand, though. Hmm. Needed more practice.

Stellaris was the incantation and all Olivia had to do was trace the star with her wand. Alright. She could do this. Before jumping straight to practicing the wand movement, she opted to practice speaking the incantation. "Stellaris." Alright. That did seem fairly straightforward. She repeated the word three more times before picking up her wand and tracing a star in the air in front of her. "Stellaris", she spoke aloud accidentally. She had not meant to combine the incantation and wand movement so quickly but it had slipped out.
Sparks flew from her wand reminding her of the sparklers that she used to play with as a child around birthdays and holidays with her family. Vi had been afraid of them at one stage because she thought the sparks would catch her sweater on fire but now she was fascinated by them.
Alright. Now she had to put them both together, right? Well this time in purpose. "Stellaris," she said as she traced a star. There were more sparks this time. She repeated the wand movement and incantation and this time saw a small ball of light in front of her for less than a minute before it vanished. Olivia was starting to get a little frustrated. So she paused for a moment before lifting her wand and speaking said incantation again. She wasn't going to let it get the best of her. "Stellaris."
A small orb in front of her appeared and shone yellow, red, and then blue. It looked smaller than the one Professor Kennedy had conjured. hmm... perhaps more practice was needed?
Jonas was excited to finally get to do something. Well, get ready to do something anyway. So without his wand, he muttered the incantation out loud.
"Stell-AIR-is. Stell-AIR-is. Stell-AIR-is. " huuum.

Ronan knew that warming charms were a thing, of course, but he wasn't such a big fan of them. Blankets just had much more of a je ne sais quoi to them that made them more preferable. Not that he was going to say this out loud or anything.
And now they had to name a star belonging to the constellation Orion. Something that he didn't know, since constellations weren't really his thing. So instead, he just sipped his coffee and let his mind wonder while everyone else answered. In fact, he let his mind wonder so far that at first, he didn't even notice that they had been given a task. He looked around to see what everyone else seemed to be doing. Stellaris. He quickly flipped through his textbook to see what it was supposed to do. Conjures stars. Okay, that was actually pretty cool. So, why all the fuss about their favorite constellations and all that? Anyway, Ronan started practicing saying the spell before actually casting it. "Stell-air-is. Stell-air-is. Stellaris. Stellaris. Stellaris." That last one was said along with wand movement, causing a small blue star to appear in front of him. Awesome!

Okay, SO, this was pretty cool. Like, way cooler than she had anticipated. Because it was fun to make their own stars, yeah? She noted down the spell and the wand movement first before pulling out her wand, tracing a star in the air. She repeated it a few times before deciding to practice the incantation. Stellaris.
Stell-AIR-is.
Yeah, simple enough. “Stell-AIR-is, stell-AIR-is.” She said it aloud a few times before practicing it non-verbally as well. She still needed to work on her non-verbal spellwork, after all. After a few moments, she cast the spell and accompanied it with the correct wand movement.. and a tiny ball of light appeared in front of her. Wait, it looked waaaay too tiny. Oops. Obviously, more practice was needed. Aaaand, repeat.
Fascinating! This was definitely going to come in handy. If she could actually master it, of course. Professor Kennedy made it look so simple and Clara felt slightly nervous as other classmates around her either started scribbling madly or waving their wands eagerly.
She wrote down 'Stellaris' and the correct pronunciation 'Stell-AIR-is' and internally voiced it a couple of times. For some reason, her brain kept on thinking 'Stell-ARR-is', which was very frustrating. It was like her brain was hard-wired one way already, making it difficult to even start.
She began mumbling to herself, "Stell-AIR-is...okay, yeah, that's it...Stell-ARR-is...okay, no, not again...Stell-AIR-is...it's 'air', you know, like the thing you breathe in to live, air...STELL-ar-is...ok, wow, way off." She huffed and sighed but tried it one last time. "Okay, you got this. Stell-AIR-is."
Good. Clara pulled out her wand and looked at it with determination. She waved it in the shape of a star and said clearly, "Stell-AIR-is". One single spark shot out and she felt relieved. This was at least better than nothing. Maybe another go, though? And this time not so forced sounding? She was sure she over-pronounced the syllables.
She cleared her throat and tried to make the star more, er, star-like this time. The first time she was sure she ended up drawing some sort of deformed square. That and the stiff delivery of the incantation itself probably got to her. "Stellaris!" Clara half-yelled, almost bracing herself for the impact. A small star appeared for about a second, with hints of red and blue, then faded away. Not quite the professor's work, but it was a star all right.
Viv was very proud of herself. She looked at the blackboard and saw the picture Orion the hunter. she had to remember her opposites. She saw Professor Kennedy point at Betelgeuse, Bellatrix, Rigel and Saiph. Viv was fascinated by the belt.
Tonight she was learning how to conjure stars. She traced a star pattern in the sky and said "Stellaris!" She got up and started practicing.

“Now before we get too much farther into the lesson, and I bore you to tears with Greek Mythology. Orion has seven highly visible stars that form its unique hourglass pattern. Can anyone tell me the name of one of these seven stars?”
See, this was kind of what Skylar disliked about her lack of consistent professor for more than one year. It was like, she was expected to know things, but each professor seemed to have their own expectations for what she should or should not know. Fortunately, Skylar had kept up with reading of whatever the required Astronomy textbook had to be for the year, but it wasn't the same. Oh-Ryan though, really? Fighting the urge to roll her eyes, the fifth year instead diligently worked to add the librarian/professor's dialogue onto her own notes that she'd taken from the textbook.
Seven stars visible to the naked eye that formed Orion. That was easy, as she'd remembered them by recalling BARB and SAM. Bellatrix, Alnitak, Rigel, Betelguese, Saiph, Alnilam, Mintaka. All of which her classmates seemed to call out, except, as Skylar put a tiny dot above each star's name to see which was mentioned, there was one that had not been mentioned -- Alnilam. Which was about to raise her hand and mention, but then Mr Kennedy had announced them all and they were continuing on.
With conjuring their own stars? Did it matter what pattern they put their stars in? Or was it merely just the act of conjuring stars? And what did that have to do with that door? Also did the conjured stars last forever, because what would happen the following night when there were stars in the sky? Would there just be extra stars out? Would that not mess with the constellations? Pondering this -- confused look on her face as well, Skylar absently traced a star in the sky, rehearsing the incantation, "Stell-AIR-is. Stell-AIR-is" And as she rehearsed, her musings couldn't take it and she had to ask.
Raising her hand, she just asked, "Um, so question, stars are these luminous balls of gas located billions of miles away, so if we're conjuring stars, does that not affect the constellations? And we can't push our conjured stars out into space, i mean, can we?"

Philippa had been staring at Derf's hair when the Professor spoke to him. It was a pretty shade did he know? She wanted to put moisturiser in it. Moisturiser was good for hair. It was her favourite part of her post shower routine, because dry hair was modeling DEATH and she obviously couldn't let that happen. Plus it smelled really good. She currently had a pink vanilla one which was heave-
... Wait, what?
She eyed Kennedy. Uhhhmmmmmmmmmm. He was wrong, did he know? Dad had told her all about astre- astire- astrolomismmssmsms? Something like that. And they were NOT the same as constellations, puh-lease professor. They were children but they weren't DUMB. She straightened in her seat and was about to tell him how wrong he was when he continued. HMPF. She didn't want to lose points but H M P F. Saved by.. yourself, Professor.
Turning to Zoryn as the class babbled about the snooze-inducing Orion constellations (puh-LEASE Professor!), Philippa whispered conspiratorially, "he's wrong! He answered Derf wrong!" And she was OH SO ABSOLUTELY satisfied that she'd picked up on it. A mirror call with her dad was so happening tonight, he'll be super proud!
Wait, why were they conjuring stars. Stellaris? What? She hadn't paid attention. With a suffered sigh, the twelve year old pulled out her wand just eyed people. Eh.

Was Zoryn actually pay any attention? Absolutely not lol. She was day dreaming, duh. This class was totally pointless and had no real impact on her future, PLUS the Professor was an Idiot Sandwich. The Gryffindor clearly had no incentive to listen to whatever was going on. She did, however, take out her wand and wave it around in star-like-ish shapes. That way she couldn't get in trouble 'cause at least it LOOKED like she was paying attention or trying... somewhat?
It was only when Philippa spoke when the third year was jolted out of her dreams. "HUH?" she stage!WHISPERED. It took her a few moments to process what the girl had said and when she did, a grin as big as the stars they were learning about had curled up on her face. Mwaahahahha. "You should tell him!!!! If you don't wanna, I will! But I don't know what the right answer is," she nodded. 'Cause Zoryn would HAPPILY call out the librarian. Prove his idiot sandwichity to the WHOLE class. But she also didn't give a flying saucer about Astronomy so she had no idea what the Professor had said... Or what was wrong about it. Eh.

Zoryn was a GENIUS. If she told him then Philippa would absolutely look like an angel. GOOD IDEA ZORYN "THE GROUND" LASTNAME. Excited, Philippa nodded with enthusiasm and checked that Kennedy wasn't looking before she whispered back, "you should tell him, it'll be funny! I'll show you."
Philippa pulled the stupidly big textbook to her and searched for constellations, because she knew asterasidisimsmsmsmms was there somewhere. Aaaaannnddd AHA. Asterisms. Right. That's what she'd said, duh. She slid the book to Zoryn and pointed at the relevant section. "See, look, Derf said the Southern Cross which is actually an ASTERISM BUT, the professor confused it with CRUX which is a CONSTELLATION. Not the same thing." Almost the same thing. BUT NOT. He would take points in an exam wouldn't he?? So there. She was so smart. Thank you Dad! The absolute smartest. Smart and pretty. Winning combo. "A constellation is, like, an area in the sky but an asterism is the actual, like, stars themselves. So he's WRONG. He said they're the same THING. And I think one has more stars in it so he's absolutely wrong." Derf was kinda wrong too? Unless she got it mixed up. But the book was right here and Kennedy couldn't argue with the book. HA.
Bow down ladies and gents and Professor, the queen of Astronomy was here to RUIN YOU. Dad always that to be good at technical subjects you had to be super accurate, and of course it did not occur to Philippa that the Professor could perhaps be trying to avoid an asterisms discussion. All she cared about was proving him WRONG because he hadn't been ACCURATE, and she'd smirk widely when Zoryn would tell him so he'd know, but not be able to prove, that she was the one who got him.
Signed, Astronomy QUEEN. Mwah!

Kalen looked at Skylar as she spoke and he gave her a small smile “Miss Diggory, as I said before, these are not actually stars, they are just sparkling balls of light that look somewhat like stars and will be helpful for what they need them for.” He said with a nod. “So no worries about us effecting constellations or anything like that. ”
He had said that right?
Kalen got up as he noticed Zoryn and Phillippa not participating in the lesson, and he walked over to them to see what they were whispering about. A glance down at the page that Miss von Brandt had open in her textbook told him all he needed to know.
“So you two caught what I said to Mr.Ashburry-Hawthorne? Yes, Crux is the constellation and the Southern Cross is indeed an asterism. Which is located in Crux, he told me the stars, I told him the constellation. Which is what I asked for. What their favorite constellation was. But I should have been clearer. Good catch, you two.” He said as he looked down at them. “Now would you two mind getting up and working on the spell I taught? We will need it soon.” He said with an eyebrow raise.
“If not, you can feel free to leave class.”
If they didn’t know the spell they wouldn’t be able to participate in the next part!
“Ten more minutes of practicing guys! ” He said as he addressed the entire class.
OOC: 24 hours left to practice the spell guys! And sorry for the Crux/Southern cross thing, it was late and my mind wasn’t working! Kalen knows better! I do not

Whoah they be creating stars?
The Curly Top paused for a moment as he watched the Professor demonstrate what needs to be done. Ok that didnt look like actual stars to him, because if it was that one small, fiery ball of plasma would've been enough to melt the entire room, and so far they were all ok. So maybe it was like little balls of light eh? At least thats what it looked like to him.
He traced the star shape in the air a few times, not so much as practice but more so trying to decide just how he was gonna trace it, if he was going to do the crisscross thing or the starfish thing or even just a sphere thing, because it is a star.
Eh getting bogged down on deets that isnt even that important. He went with the simplest, fastest way to wandstroke a star shaped object and willed Stellaris through his mind. A couple of attempts later a small, illumination hung in the space in front of him.

Well thank Merlin AND Dumbledore that his stutter and lisp were gone or they would have had a REAL problem on their hands in this lesson. Not that the Hufflepuff was particularly confident with the spell anyway...conjuration was NOT something he was particularly good at. Charms were much more his speed which was the only reason he had any luck with the Doubling Charm in Transfiguration.
"St-el-la-ris," he repeated aloud, doing so just a feeeeeeeeeeeeew more times to try and get it to roll off his tongue more easily so he could attempt to put it with the wand movement. Or that WAS the plan until he heard his name and of course his ears perked up.
"HUH?" he grunted loudly, turning around to look as the librarian spoke to his two friends. Leaaaaaaaaaaaning over in his seat,
which meant he was sorta crossing over in front of Flynn because he had to hear better.
....AHA! Derf couldn't help but GRIN because his thoughts HAD beeen RIGHT! And now he remembered what the A word was he was spiraling about because he COULDN'T remember. Asterism. HA! Derf's chest puffed out and he was feeling pretty confident...but also even MORE confused in a way too. Because....Derf had given him stars? No...he had given him the name of an (AND NOW HE KNEW THE NAME!) asterism...not stars. Although he was pretty sure he could name at least ONE of the stars in that asterism if asked - which thankfully he had not been because he really probably couldn't. And then crestfallen came too, for reasons.
But STILL, thank you Phillippa for helping him restore faith in himself and his ability to retain information.
Now...back to this spell. Sigh.
Tracing a star in the air with his wand a few times - and Derf drew his starts from bottom right leg up and then down and across - he gave the incantation a go along with it. ""St-el-la-ris!" he chirped. To his delight, light DID erupt from his wand...but it was short lived as it SHOT out of the tip and riiiiiiiight smack towards his desk partner, Flynn's, forehead. "LOOK...." But it was too late. ".....out?"

Zoryn smiled BIG at Philippa! "I will!!" They were gonna undermine the librarian and it was gonna be SO awesome!!! She nodded along to everything the first year said, even paying attention to the textbook page (which isn't something Zor normally did with textbooks lol). She was SO excited to voice their concern and as a result absorbed all the information (for the most part)!! Man, if learning was always about getting revenge then Zoryn would've starting doing it a LONG time ago!!!
With a defiant look in her eyes, the Gryffindor nodded to her desk mate before raising her-- huh?
..... How the heck did the Librarian know exactly what they were planning to do?????
This was fishy. REAL fishy.
This was a class full of students from ALL houses and ALL years. In fact, the lesson was SO packed that it didn't make sense that he could catch on to their quiet whispers... Not unless he was watching the two of them to begin with. WHICH, by the way, MADE SO MUCH SENSE. Professor Kennedy was literally out to get Zoryn Spinnet (and Philippa Von Last Name) by association!!!
Well Sir, that was just plain R U D E.
"Thanks, Sir!" she grinned at his 'good catch' comment, and looked over at the Slytherin. "You should probably give us points for that," she nodded. "And clear it up for the rest of the class since they've got to know it for exams. I'd hate to be the person who got marks off for something I didn't learn right in class." She was being helpful.
Y u p.
She'd start practicing the spell once they were awarded for their helpfulness.

Making real stars or not, it was still cool. Cass finished copying Orion and its seven main bright stars into her notes for later reference as she listened. The professor had said they would be continuing to work on the constellation in later classes so it would certainly come in handy. Plus, copying stuff down helped her remember order and location of each. Satisfied, the Ravenclaw felt like she was ready to move on, practicing the spell they would apparently need for the rest of the lesson. Stellaris.
The word was run over and over in her head as she worked on it, finally vocalizing the incantation out loud at the end of the string. It sounded about right to her. Stell-AIR-is. As for the wand movement, drawing a star might be easy, but could be tricky up in the air. Doesn’t mean it wasn’t doable or hard, Cassie just had to focus on it as she tried the wand movement itself over and over again. Not quite a star…star…not quite…wonky star…better star.
Joans was doing good as the spell was seeming to work. He continued the incantation moving his wand in the star shape. Yay! It 's working. Jonas caught. His bad.

It was only downhill from here with her attention span. The more information the Professor spouted was the further her mind drifted. A typical reaction really. If it wasn't something of special interest to her, Jessa often found it difficult to keep her focus long enough. The girl could sit and inhale copious amounts of information at a time but .......not on stars necessarily.
Just no.
It wasn't until the man was about half way through explaining the spell that the Ravenclaw finally caught on.
Oh, they were moving the lesson. Jessa straightened in her seat, looking about as everyone got ready to begin...practising? Practising. By the sounds of it she wasn't so behind on the lesson afterall. The only thing was...this was a new spell for her. Not keeping up with Astronomy, she didn't try to learn these spells before the lesson in which they were introduced. It made this a unique instance as she was currently trying to relearn the spells she already did, non-verbally.
Did she...just....learn this one non-verbally and be done with it? Go through the same verbal process before trying it non-verbally? Seemed like it would only add another to her long list of spells to be relearned later and that wasn't exactly what she was going for.
Ugh. Flawless. What a standard.
Jessa drew her wand and began tracing the wand motion over and over. Occasionally, she repeated the incantation 'stellaris' but it was more to have a running feel for the incantation and to have it running through her mind than to get the word right. The young girl was still uncertain of whether she'd go ahead and try it non-verbally first so this quite time in which she muttered to herself was spent running over the pros and cons.
The thought was almost distracting, making it a good thing this was only practice and they wouldn't be needing to cast just yet...but she knew that time was coming and then she'd have to make up her mind.
