Follow the Groundskeeper down the street from the Hogsmeade platform, over a shady, steep, rock path, and down to the shore of the Black Lake.
A fleet of magical boats bob gently on the dark, deep lake, waiting for your arrival. Four first-years per boat, please, and be careful not to tip over.
The Giant Squid might be looking for a feast tonight too.

Leah looked around at the source of the sound. First years? That's her! As she walked to the person calling them she realized how they were reaching Hogwarts. Way too exciting. Boats to school? Leah was never afraid of water, but she hoped that the first years would go with the carriages too.
Leah followed the groundskeeper and dropped into the nearest boat. Maybe other first years she knew would join her in this boat later. The girl looked up at the groundskeeper and asked, "Why are we going to the school by boat, anyway?"
First years travel by boat? Interesting. Bri thought to herself, as she climbed into a boat. careful not to fall into the lake. She didn't want to get wet. She started to get both nervous and giddy being so close to the castle.

Leah watched as another girl climbed into a boat. Maybe she did not want to sit with Leah, but she gave it a try anyway. "Hi, can I sit with you? Only I don't want to sit alone now." She said, smiling. "I'm Leah." She added.
To be honest, Lana wasn't too excited to do this. The boat thing. She couldn't swim.
But it was the way she should get to Hogwarts her first year. She'd heard about this, yep. And she was going to enjoy it no matter how scared she was.
She clutched her backpack to her chest in an attempt to make herself feel better as she came up to a boat that already had two girls in it. "Can I sit with you?" She asked, stepping on a rock closer to the boat. "Please?" She added, just because it was nice.

Bri glanced up when she heard another girl speak to her. "Sure." She said smiling, Bri felt bad she didn't noticed the other girl earlier, but she wasn't really looking around at first. "Nice to meet you, Leah. I am Bri."

Another girl! Leah nodded, grinning. The more, the merrier (Although it's only four to a boat) "Sure, fine by me. And I'm Leah." The girl said, looking at the other girl. "It's only four to a boat, right? Can we save a seat for my friend Hawthorne? She's not here yet." Leah said to the two girls. My friend. Yep, that's right.

"I think four is the limit" Bri replied securing her bag as it start to slip. " I don't mind. I am not waiting for anyone." She said smiling waiting to meet the other girl, she hope she can make some new friends tonight. " Are you nervous about tonight?" Bri asked the two girls in the boat with her.
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.

After having lead the newcomers to the boats, Orsino stepped onto one himself in the center. His newly adopted pet Raven, Chess sat on his right shoulder giving the children just as much watch as he was. "We take the boats as tradition." Orsino spoke up to the young girl settling herself into another boat beside his. "You take the boats to Hogwarts as young inexperienced witches, and wizards. Then after you've graduated in your 7th and final year you leave in them." It adds a load of emotional weight. Orsino expected this much, but still found himself pouring buckets of his own tears from the boat after he had graduated.

Leah was really grateful that Bri let her save a seat. "Really nervous. It's the big day. What house do you think you'll be sorted into?" She said, now a bit shivering in the night air.

"I don't know." Bri replied honestely."I heard a lot about the houses on the train ride here. I think I am more like a Hufflepuff, though I am not too sure yet, I guess I will find out. How about you?" Bri asked

Leah nodded thoughtfully. She wondered how it would feel if she took the same magical boat to the Hogwarts Express on her last, very last day of school. "Oh, that's nice." That was the only thing the girl could say. She would probably cry when she next rides this boat. "So, you're a gamekeeper? What do you do?" The girl asked. She was always curious on what a gamekeeper does.

"Well, nearly all my family members were in Hufflepuff when they were at school, so maybe I am too. But I guess Gryffindor's not bad too." Leah had made a lot of Puffer friends during her visit to Diagon Alley and the train ride, so she was hoping more for Hufflepuff.
"Wait, did I see you before in Eeylops?" Leah asked suddenly, screwing up her eyes to remember the day she bought her owl. There was a girl her age beside her...

"Oh! I am a muggleborn, so none of my family has even heard of Hogwarts before I got my letter." Bri said
Bri thought back trying to remember the day she went Diagon Alley and got her owl, Mystic.
Now that she thought about it, yes, Leah did look familiar. "I think you did" Bri replied smiling

Orsino lifted his hand and shook his head back and forth at her Question. "No, no. That usually falls under your Care of Magical Creatures Professor. I do have some small experience with working with Hippogriffs, but that's about it." His head turned with his Raven's it was unintentional, but did look rather creepy at how well in unisen the two seemed to be. Other Newcomers were all getting settled into their boats and he launch them all from the shore very soon. "I typically just maintain the Grounds, hence my job as Groundskeeper." It was a lot of work...there's a lot of Grounds to cover at Hogwarts.
After a long and not very exciting train ride not enough sweets to last the ride, Donny decided that he needed some more excitement before getting back to THE CASTLE. And... carriages seemed not so super exciting... so the Second Year skipped along after the first years, boats were fun. Boats were exciting. Boats would do. He looked around and decided that his mam was right, he had grown quite a lot since starting school, that or all the First Years were very short this year. Donnacha still followed them happily, he could TRY get on the boats, couldn't he?
A few first years were right before him, but for once Donny decided to blend in instead of do what he was best at. No talking till he reached the boat. The groundskeeper couldn't kick him off once they were on the lake, hmmmmmmmm?
Hehehe, he sniggered and hopped onto a boat. All was well so far.. ' This is soooo very essiting and I have never seen nothing like this before!' Cause he'd done a LOT of talking last year, even shy first years could be excited, right right? He was totally convincing, yep. Abbi would LOVE this if she heard.

First years? Once she had gotten off the train, Brynn had followed the group of first years at their calling. That would make sense, she figured, as the other students would already know were to go. This was obviously one of the grownup teacher people guiding them in which way to go. But once the small group stopped at the end of the path, what the eleven year old was met with did not make her happy one bit.
A massive dark lake lay in front of her.. and she was meant to get into one of those rickety old boats to get across? Oh no.. no, no, no, no, NO. She was terrified of water, she was not about to sail across this lake, not in the dark. There had to be some other way.
Her panic-stricken face looked around, first at the enormous man who was instructing some of the other first years on what to do, then looked frantically around for Bart. Okay, she didn't really expect him to be here even if they were together when they got off the train. Because even though this was technically his first year, he wasn't really a first year and probably didn't fall into step with the other first years. But she needed her best friend like now. Maybe he went along with the older students. She thought she had seen carriages or something to presumably take them to the castle. Maybe she could go back down the path and get on one of those. No one would know she wasn't supposed to be on one, right?

Orsino kept his eyes on this one. The Kid looked out of place amongst the Newcomers.
He wasn't talking about his unusual height. The kid was still small (compared to him), but was taller than most of the other newcomers. Where most of the other kids were walking confused and mostly focused on him, with no clue where they were going. This one had no air of fear about him, like he knew where he was headed.
Things became clearer as they reached the Lake.
That was a School Robe, with Hufflepuff Colors. "You there!" Orsino boomed at the not-so-taller boy in the boat not to far from his. "My Boat NOW!"If you were going to sneak into his Boats do so with your outfit screaming I've already been sorted.

Yes of course there was going to be those afraid of Water. Orsino quickly switched to a more pleasent face. "You'd better get in a Boat." He told the young newcomer girl. Whose eyes looked like they'd pop out of their sockets. "The Carraiges have all left by now, and you'll need to go across the Lake with the rest of us." He beckoned her over moving his large arm in his direction so she knew to come in his Boat. Besides she may enjoy her ride in the small boat, with a Large Man, and his Raven...to the large forbodding-looking castle off in the distant darkness....Hmmm...That didn't sound right in his head.

Why didn't more kids do this? This was fun! He looked around and saw a BIG groundskeeper. o__o Bleeeend in. Donnacha had been doing that pretty good so far, or so he thought. Might start an acting career or something like that, actors were able to pull this stuff off. He grinned to himself and petted his toad, who was sat quietly in one of his pockets. 'Almost there, Bump!' SOSOSO good to be back.
Soon he'd see Elodieeeee and- WOW! Loud much?! Donny jumped, almost falling over the side of the little boat. That'd be bad, very bad. Unless the squid saved him, that'd be a whole new adventure. ...wait, you there? He Donnacha turned to see if there was anyone else he could be talking to. Anyone? ....nope. 'Me?!' This was.... not good. Nope, nope, Donny wasn't so sure of he whole acting thing. Maybe not, maaaaybe not.
He groaned and jumped out of the boat he was in and into the one the groundskeeper was in, surprised to see that they did indeed fit in one boat. His mam would love this story, not. The cousins would definitely be impressed though, he'd never be mocked again. ..but maybe he should wait and see what the big man had to say. Right... something to break the tension. Heh... '....have you met my toad?'

She couldn't see anyone behind her so Brynn was awfully nervous about heading back. What if everyone had already left and gone on to Hogwarts by the carriages or however? Then what would she do? She might just wander around lost in the train station or maybe she'd have to ride the train back home. Her mom would be so mad then! Oh this was not how she wanted her Hogwarts education to begin.. first humiliated with her underwear being strung up, then having to face her worst fear. Maybe it would be better to just go home.
And then a loud voice snapped her from her reverie and brown eyes snapped back to the large man as he yelled at a boy already in a boat. She stared at him wide-eyed. Mean and scary. She waffled back and forth, trying to decide what to do when she froze like a deer in headlights as she heard the voice again. He saw her. And he told her to get in a boat. His boat? Brynn peered up at him, contemplating as she bit her lip. She didn't have much choice now, did she? But that didn't make her any less frightened.
The diminutive redhead inched her way closer to the edge of the lake as she watched the boy jump into the man's boat. Was there really going to be room for her too? Brynn peered down into the water, then looked back up at the man again, even more panic stricken than before. ".......butI'mtooscared..."Wibble. There was no way that boat would carry them all. She would sink to the bottom, she just knew it.

Orsino was not having it. Not while he had a scared newcomer to afraid to step into the boat. They would be late, which would not look great on his first night as Groundskeeper. He ignored the Hufflepuff boy, but not before giving him the eyebrow stare. "Scared?" He said to the girl. "Of what? School, the water? No, it's something deeper! You're afraid of getting sorted into Slytherin." That's it! He got it right with one of those he hoped. "There's some ancient Hawaiian saying about conquering fears, but it's too complicated to remember in full. So just hop on in, this Hufflepuff was kind enough to physically row us both to the School." With that his attention drifted back to the sneaky badger. He reached to the side of the boat and set two oars beside the kid. "Put that Toad down. Your rowing us straight to your Head of House." He pulled his own wand out and grabbed a nearby floating stick in the water. Snapping it in two first, then transfigured it another set of oars for himself. "I'll help you along only because this is a great upper body workout."

Brynn's widened eyes blinked several times as the big man did some weird eyebrow thing and then directed several questions in succession to her. Slytherin? What the heck was this grownup person on about? "No.. I don't know how to.." She trailed off, giving him a weird look as he rambled on about some kind of something she had no clue about. Alright. She really had no way out of this, did she?
The boat was close enough to the shore and the man was huge. She could get in, maybe, and he was big enough that if she held on to him, she could use him as a flotation device if they did start sinking. Okay. Brynn reached forward and grasped on to the man's big muscular arm, holding tightly, as she tentatively stepped in the boat. She started hyperventilating as the boat rocked under her sudden shift in weight. Breathe in, breathe out.
Once her breathing was remotely under control, Brynn stepped in more fully, still clinging to the big man very tightly as she hesitantly sat down. Okay, they could go now. She was in and wasn't letting go till they got the other side. Start rowing or something someone.

Brynn peered down into the water, then looked back up at the man again, even more panic stricken than before. ".......butI'mtooscared..."Wibble. There was no way that boat would carry them all. She would sink to the bottom, she just knew it.

So.. maybe this wasn't one of his greatest ideas ever.. but he still seemed to be having more fun than the scared looking first year who was now climbing into their boat too. Boats were fun, not scary! He beamed at the girl, not too worried about whatever punishment he would receive, because there was the boat ride first. And it would not do to be stuck in a boat with a scared girl. That's why he came along to the boats! Yeah, that was what he'd tell the people. Scared people needed some help. Even if that was what the Groundskeeper was for..... 'The boats are lotsa fun! I bets.. I bets if you fall in the squid would save you!' ADVENTURE! Everyone ought to like that. He grinned at the girl before turning back to the giant Groundskeeper.
Oooh, was he Hawaiian? They had dolphins and stuff, didn't they? 'Have you ever seen a dolphin? In Hawaii? You are from there, right?' On second thought.. maybe now wasn't the best time to ask him all these questions. He'd ask them once they were at Hogwarts, when big guy wasn't so angry looking. 'I'm Donnacha Harper!' He'd have to tell him his name sooner or later, so..
......what? Physically? 'But.. we're at Hogwarts! We can use magic!' Siiigh. Bump the toad went back into his pocket and he took the oars, awkwardly waving them around above the water. Rowing across a lake was simple, or.. would be, if it wasn't for the heavy!big guy sitting in the boat with him. Fun or not, Donny really didn't want to be doing any rowing right now, he wanted exciting stuff to happen, but his two companions didn't seem very excitable. 'In Ireland I go rowing aaaaall the time. I see dolphins sometimes. They're the best, don't you think?' Dolphin talk would cheer the Groundskeeper up, course it would, it always cheered him up. Best keep talking and keep him your friend! He smiled up at the man, he must do a lot of rowing across lakes, upper body strength and all. 'Yeah.. I bet! You're huge!' He'd take that as a compliment, right?
Donnacha nodded and stuck the oars back into the water, smiled at the scared looking girl and started rowing. 'I wonder what's for dessert.'
