The Office of Professor Kazimeriz

The warm interior of Professor Kazimeriz's office is simply lit with a candlelight chandelier. While it is well organized and fastidiously tidy, the floor to ceiling mahogany shelves are overflowing with thick, ancient books and curiosities that the professor has collected during nearly a century of travels. The walls are decorated with tribal masks and other oddities as well as moving photographs of distant lands and distant people. Several photos are of the professor himself, posing with various wizards, witches, hobgoblins, werewolves, vampires and other magical beings.

At the back of the room there is a large, locked, wood and glass enclosed curio cabinet which contains a variety of objects. Each object has a note card describing the object and the curse placed on it. To the right of the cabinet, there is a brass bell dangling from a wrought iron hook.

At the center of the office is a large mahogany desk with a deeply cushioned leather chair behind it. On the desk are a few artifacts, including a glass-encased hand of glory. There is also a quill, blotter and a photograph of a much younger Professor Kazimeriz with a woman and small child.

Comfortable, overstuffed chairs and sofas are positioned within the office near the fireplace sitting area and across from the professor's desk. The smell of tea and warm sugar cookies lingers in the air, mingling with the scent of the burning pine log in the fireplace.

When you are invited in, please make yourself comfortable.

Theo looked up as the door creaked open. He was rather scared as he entered the office. "H....hello, P...professor," he stuttered. He was scared at the old wrinkly man before him. "I...I... wanted to ask you for some help."

Professor Kazimeriz had been sitting at his desk, answering his rather large stack of correspondence, when he heard a knock at the door. He glanced at a small glass orb on his desk -- his Visitor Viewer. He saw an image of a small Slytherin boy. "You may enter." he said, continuing his writing.

Theo struggled onto one of the leather chairs. He took the forwards approach. Facing the chair forwards on. He thrust his little body at it. Jumping to get the height. He grasped at the back, hoping to catch hold. His little fingers caught the seam of the cushion. He pulled himself on with all the strength he had, his little legs kicking to help. Finally he had half of his body on it, and his legs could do the rest. He used his knees to finish the job. Turning around, he sat back and smiled at his accomplishment.

"My name is Theodore Newtington the Forth," Theo said. He thought his whole name appropriate for the situation, and the man before him. "I was wondering if you could help me do magic. I am not very good at it. My mummy thought I was a squib for a while. And you seem very smart, Sir. Could you teach me to do the bubble head charm, please Sir?"

Professor Kazimeriz held back the urge to laugh. "A very large name for such a small boy. Tell me Newtingon, what year are you?"

He heard a knock at his door and glanced at his Visitor Viewer. It was the Ravenclaw girl he had taken points from at the feast. Good. She could wait a moment, while he tended to this boy's request, then he would invite her in.

Theo nodded, "My daddy is the same." He swung his little legs, "Erm I am a second year Sir. I know I am little. But I can't help it. I was born this way. But I am 12." He legs swung again, "You can call me Theo. That is my name after all."

"What is your name Sir? The sign was so high on the door. I couldn't really see it."

My goodness. 12, really? Professor Kazimeriz would've thought he was a first year, or even younger and mistakenly sent to Hogwarts instead of a preschool. "I am Professor Kazimeriz. I am the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Newtington, did you attend classes last term?" he asked, his face stern but his eyes hiding just a hint of twinkle.

Theo nodded, "Yes Sir. I attended all the classes. And I did what I was told." But he didn't really know what he was doing. He waved his wand but felt rather silly. Nothing ever came out of it. Kazimeriz? How was Theo meant to pronounce that. He wasn't that good at English. He had just learnt to say his th's properly.

"Good lad; good lad. Then I take it you know the difference between defensive spells and a charm?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

Theo shook his head slowly, "Not really Sir. I just know that they both come out of a wand." He frowned, rather disappointed with himself. He really was as useless as Nia said he was.

Kazimeriz stifled a sigh. A whole year of instruction and the boy didn't know... He wondered about the competence of the previous staff. "While charms can be used to great effect in some defensive wand work and some even will be taught and employed in my class, in general charms are taught by..." he consulted a staff list on his desk. "One Ian Ashby, Charms professor." he peered at the tiny student over his reading spectacles. "A bubble-head charm is more advanced than your year, however... it is in my experience a third-year spell. As such, I do not think you are ready for such training." He looked at the boy. "Can you perform a levitating charm yet?"

Theo's legs swung as he gazed about the room. There were so many pretty things to look at. He liked the pictures. They were very pretty. He legs continued to swing as he gazed happily. A big smile on his otherwise occupied face. He wasn't really listening to Kazimeriz. He heard Ian's name. "Mr Ian worked with my daddy," he said. He wasn't sure what Ian had to do with anything. But he made sure to listen afterwards.

He shook his head, "I don't think I can. I do not know."

"Then you definitely are not yet ready for a bubblehead charm, I am sorry to tell you. Here." He wrote a quick note on a small sheet of parchment. "Go see Professor Ashby. Explain yourself to him as you have to me. Take him this note. I am quite certain that he will provide you remedial instruction."

Theo frowned, "What does remedial mean?" He swung his legs again. He took the letter. And his face scrunched up as he pocketed it. He wasn't rude as to read it, but he would take it straight away.

He shook his head, "I am sorry Sir. I am not allowed sugar. I haven't had my tablet yet." He struggled off the seat, "Please may I leave Sir?"

"Remedial means corrective. And yes, Newtington. Please go see your Charms professor, and inform the young Ravenclaw girl outside my door that she may enter. She is the one with the blue tie." Because he might not know that, and he had noticed a Slytherin girl at his door as well. He gave a curt nod to the boy and continued writing.

Theo nodded, and smiled. He pushed open the door and left. He had to find the Ravenclaw girl.

Lasca entered the large office. Her silver eyes taking everything in. When she spotted the professor she walked over and stood in front of his deak. I will not fidget. She told herself sternly.

She held her head high and waited for the Professor to speak. Her hair was literally crackling with her nervousness. Finding her own voice she decided to announce her arrival. "You were wishing to see me Professor." She winced slightly at her thick Transylvanian accent, she hoped he would understand her. Since half the people she met couldn't seem to get what she was saying. Remembering her manners, she gave him a deep curtsy.

Her fathers voice rang in her head.
"Meet your elders with respect and dignity. Do not take anything for granted and deal with your problems with grace and poise. You are a princess of Transylvania so conduct yourself thus." His stern face flashed in her mind. What would he say if he saw her now? She missed him terribly and she wished she could talk to him. To tell him how different the customs were here.

I will not cry! She gritted her teeth and took a deep breath fighting for control. Her eyes flashed and silver was darting through her hair like mad hornets.

"A fi scaun." he said as he finished writing and returned his quill to the quill rest. He looked up at her, his black eyes meeting hers evenly. "First, please tell me your name, child."

He summoned a cup and saucer from the shelf, lightly placing it on the desk in front of her. His charmed pot poured a cup of darjeeling and then refreshed his cup as well.

"You claim that I have incorrectly penalized you and you have no broom in your possession. The conversation that I heard indicated otherwise. Have you any proof to support your claim?" He sat back with his cup and waited for her response.

Lasca was slightly startled when he told her sit, in her native tongue! She glanced behind her and promptly did just that. Gathering her scattered wits she responded, "Multumesc frumos." She gave a small smile and experienced another pang of homesickness.

Focusing on what he was saying she nodded her head. "I can assure you, sir, that I am not having my broom with me. I can be writing my Papa and he can tell you." She bowed her head. "I must say I am sorry for causing such trouble. I only wished to be clearing my name. I was meaning no disrespect." In a lower voice she whispered, "Dezvinovatire."

She looked back at the Professor, "Other then my word I am having no proof. I had thought to ask my Papa to send it to me if I made the Quidditch team, that is to say after gaining permission. I just didn't want to be getting into more trouble when I could not produce a broom, at dawn. As was your insistance."

Kazimeriz considered her words, sipping his tea. He lowered his cup onto the saucer, nodding slightly to her. "You wish to clear your name, and yet you did not tell me what it is." He raised an eyebrow.

Blushing she nodded her head. "I am Lasca Romanov, Professor."

"Well, Lasca Romanov, you have spoken well; unfortunately it is my policy to never change my position in a disciplinary situation. What has been taken will remain taken."

He paused, sipping his tea. "That being said, your purpose was not to try and convince me to 'change my mind' but rather to explain your situation and explain why you cannot produce your broom tomorrow. For accepting your fate and behaving in a responsible and respectful manner, I award you... 15 points." He peeled back his lips, exposing his liver-like gums and gleaming white teeth. It might have been a smile. Perhaps. "I believe this matter can be considered closed; please be aware that first years are not allowed brooms even when on the quidditch team, so please do not request that your father send yours when you owl him. And Lasca... do tell your father that Professor Kazimeriz sends his regards."

"Of course Professor. I understand." She hadn't expected him to change the points, she simply wanted to account for her behavior. She was rather relieved that he had listened to her. The silver slowly drained from her eyes, exposing the normally emerald iries. Her long hair settled back into place and was once again a deep black.

Lasca gave him her full attention as he continued his explanation. She couldn't help the small smile that exposed itself at his words. She nodded her head and finally stood up. Dipping into another curtsy she said, "Thank you Professor. I thank you for you time and patience. I will heed you words and surely give my father your regards."

Straightening back up, she held her head high and bowed her head in respect. "By your leave, I will go to my common room now. And may I say I am looking forward to your class." Which was nothing but the truth, she was excited to start tomorrow. She felt better now that she had this all cleared up, she couldn't stand being in trouble. It wasn't in her nature to cause mischief, not overly much anyway.

Professor Kazimeriz nodded. "Mulţumesc." He sipped his tea. "Please inform the other students that are waiting outside that they may both enter. You may take a sugar cookie if you like as leave." He picked up his quill and made a note in a small ledger on his desk.

Lasca gave another small curtsy. "As tu dorinţă." She picked up a small cookie and glided out of the room. There was a small, almost unnoticed bounce in her step.
