If you want to be the last to leave or want to hang with the more rowdy crowd, then the back passenger cars of the train are for you. Just like the other cars, a long corridor provides access to the many compartments, each labelled with a letter, available for you and your friends to hunker down in until the train has come to a complete stop. Cushioned seats and large windows, allowing perfect views of the British scenery on your journey, await.
Well, what are you waiting for? Slide open a compartment door and make yourself at home. Place any of your belongings not in the luggage car on the racks above you. Chat with your friends about what you did this summer, enjoy munching on the snacks you bought from the trolley lady, get ahead of the game by reading your textbooks, or take a long nap as the train travels over numerous hills and mountainsides. Whatever you do, exhibit your best behaviour -- the prefects will be regularly patrolling the corridors and poking their heads inside your compartment to make sure you are doing so.
The back of the train happened to be where Alastair boarded, and so the back of the train was where he sat. Between the chaos of Diagon Alley during back to school shopping and Gregory's incessant hovering over him like he might break or disappear, Alastair hadn't been able to meet anyone his own age. Now that he was on his own, without anyone telling him to 'be nice' and 'use his manners', the irritated scowl that tended to linger about his face was gone.
Getting more comfortable in his seat, he watched the reunions and farewells happening all along Platform 9 3/4. So much shrieking, laughing, posturing, and crying... had these people not seen each other at all over the summer holidays? He continued crowd-watching for another minute or so, but then he caught sight of his mother and Gregory peering through the window at him and slouched down out of view. Did they not have anything better to do?

Maddie half walked, half bounced throughout the train as she thought about where she wanted to sit. She knew more people now, so finding a friend shouldn't be too hard. She was mainly interested in what sort of boys she'd come across this school year. She just knew this was THE YEAR. This would be the year she'd have her first boyfriend!
Well, she hoped so at least.
The train still looked pretty empty, which meant she was probably one of the first to board. She ended up finding an empty compartment in the back of the train and opened up a chocolate frog to snack on while she waited around. Mmm. Nothing like getting the train ride started with a good piece of chocolate.

Summer was officially over and Septimus was back on the train once more. At least the goodbyes were getting easier, even though his mum had sent an extra warning after last term's inferi drama. Really? He wasn't a brash Gryffindor after all. There would be thinking before any rushing into danger and only if someone was in trouble and he could help. Not that he was really useful as a third year.
Third year...
Two years at Hogwarts had already come and gone and after depositing his trunk in the luggage compartment, the Ravenclaw was nearly ready to head towards his third. He just had to find a seat on the train, the compartments slowly but surely beginning to fill up. Finally he spotted a perch to call his own that worked, stepping inside and slipping into a window seat. Soon they would be on their way.

Hanna was GLAD to be saying goodbye to her parents.
She'd discovered that their secret was her mother being pregnant again. She turned into a giant Banshee when pregnant. Hanna would know, having three younger sisters already. Merlin, how many more would fit in the house?
With her luggage away, Hanna went with her book under one arm, and her backpack full of sweets, to find somewhere to park for the long journey. She opened one compartment before realising it was already taken. "Oh," she said, pausing at the door. She recognised him, though. "Septimus, right?" She hovered a little. "I-is it okay if I sit in here?"

Septimus had taken to starring out at the families and students still on the platform. So much action marking the day. At the sound of the compartment door opening, the third year slowly turned his head back in that direction only to find a girl coming in. A girl apparently surprised by his presence…and who knew his name. “Yeah…that’s me,” he confirmed, letting his gaze have a better look at his companion. A housemate for sure, but the rest he was blanking on.
“Um…sure.” Not like he could hog a compartment to himself, especially once it got more cramped before they left Kings Cross. "Free to sit where you want."

Hanna smiled and sat down across from him. He didn't seem like a talker... "Thanks," she said. She was sure her own chattiness was a side effect of her broodiness at home the last few weeks. She hadn't spoken with her parents much, owing to her suspicions, and her sisters had changed a lot since she'd left.
Her bag was placed next to her, where she unzipped it and pulled out a fizzing whizbee. She popped it into her mouth and started sucking on it, causing her body to float a few inches above the seat. She grinned, enjoying the light rush she got from not being in contact with anything. "You want one?" she offered the bag of sweets she had to him, but it was really just a massive bag full of an assortment of all the sweets she'd bought from Sugarplum's.

Having not found either of the two people she'd met in Diagon Alley on the platform (which was fine with her by the way, she needed to meet some female counterparts anyway), Archer decided just to make a go of boarding the train alone. After placing her trunk in the luggage compartment (she'd had no idea trains even had those), she wandered around the train a bit before deciding that, much like a school bus, the back was the place to sit.
Or so she had thought. Had she boarded too early? Was there a standard time that it was acceptable to board? Was everyone just in the front and middle cars? Or the ROOF? No, she was pretty sure she hadn't seen anyone on the roof. So, it had to be one of the first two options. Ooops. Too late to run correction if it was the time thing and she really didn't want to have to go back through the other cars.
Finally pulling a compartment open at random, Archer plopped down in the open seat, noticing the other girl right as her bottom hit the fabric. "Oh, I'm sorry. Didn't see you there," she said with a note of humor in her voice. "Sterling Calrissian, but people call me Archer."

Sooooo this was it. Her first day at Hogwarts. Well, after the train ride.
Madison was feeling both nervous and excited about her first term at a new school, and had already stowed away all of her luggage. Now she just needed to find a place to sit. That shouldn't be too hard, but she didn't really KNOW anyone yet. At least not super properly. Of course there was Hanna, who was really nice and helpful, but she couldn't be spotted anywhere. Oh well. She would just make due.
Making her way towards the back of the train, she saw that the compartments weren't too full yet. And there was one with two girls who looked to be about her age. Maybe they would let her join them and she could get to know more people. She could actually fit in. "Is it okay if I join you?" she asked while standing at the doorway.
After Bettie escaped from her mother's hugs and kisses good bye and got her trunk put away she made her way to the back of the train. Finding an empty compartment she sat down and got out the Daily Prophet and started to look at all the moving pictures. This was all new to her.
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Daisy decided to have a quick look in this particular compartment before returning to the Prefects Compartment. She spotted Maddie sitting by herself, eating a Chocolate Frog and gave her fellow Hufflepuff a smile and wave. When Daisy spotted Ravenclaw Third Years Septimus and Hanna, she gave them each a smile. She then spotted about five new Hogwarts students.
"Hello. My name is Daisy Swann and I'm a Prefect for Hufflepuff. How are you all finding your train journey so far?"

Patrick decided he would board the train in the back and work his way to the prefects compartment for his start of term meeting. He felt weird pinning his badge onto his T-shirt, so he had it stashed in his jeans pocket. He was certain with the outfit he was Going to get enough attention for his very country muggle attire.. Not many people would wear their farm clothes on the train. He was peeking his head into compartments trying to check and see if there were any new students that he should be on the lookout for.
He passed a girl in a compartment alone and glanced around she had a paper in her face so he figured she wanted some alone time and snaked by that compartment. He poked his head into the next compartment and noticed Maddie Kemp who he recognized as they were in the same year... however he didn’t recognize the other two. His broad shoulders were already in the doorway he couldn’t stop now... “hey y’all. How was your summer Maddie? I’m Patrick by the way. he mentioned the last part because he didn’t recognize the other two girls Maddie was sitting with.

When the compartment door opened, Maddie simply glanced up and swallowed the chewed-up chunk of chocolate frog in her mouth. She was no stranger to people randomly entering compartments she was in, and she even welcomed it. It was also pretty cool that this girl, whoever she was, just walked on in and took a seat. "It's okay," she said to her new companion. "I'm cool with it. Nice to meet you. I'm Maddie Kemp, a fourth year Hufflepuff." She nodded as the girl gave her name. "So how'd you get the name Archer?"
Then there was another voice coming from the direction of the door, and Maddie looked up to see another unfamiliar face. "Yeah, of course," she said, sitting up a little straighter. "It's cool to have more people in the compartment." The train ride was super long, but if they spent it hanging out with a group of people, it should be a lot more fun! "I'm Maddie Kemp, by the way." She was talking to the second girl, of course. She'd already given Archer her name.
A motion in the corridor caught her attention, and she looked up to see Daisy walking by. She smiled and waved back. Hmm...why hadn't Daisy stopped, and where was she headed? Maddie would have to catch up with her later on. The slightly older girl looked like she was on a mission or something.
Then there was a new visitor at the compartment door, and this one she recognized. "Howdy, Patrick," she said, giving him a hello in a language he probably heard more often. Of course Maddie didn't talk like that, and her native British accent saying the word howdy sounded strange to her. Oh, well, she'd said it anyway. "My summer was good! I had a lot of fun, but it's good to see my friends again." She'd missed her siblings, but she'd had enough of them for a while. "How was yours?"
Penny hadn't had the best start to her morning, but she put a small smile on her lips regardless. It wasn't like she was particularly up for friendly conversation or the like usually, but there was no need to appear standoffish, right?
As the Hufflepuff made way down the corridors she peeked into each compartment. Hopefully there would be a relatively empty one at some point, because the thought of barging into an occupied one made her stomach churn. Eurgh.

This was why Drew very much preferred getting on the Hogwarts Express before everyone else did, so he could keep a compartment to himself for as long as he could. But given certain circumstances involving lugging his baggage into the luggage compartment, he was delayed.
And all his favourite compartments were taken by upperclassmen, and there was no way Drew was sitting with the older students. He was far too awkward to even consider that, so the thirteen year old found himself peeking at compartment to find an empty place to stay or at least someone he was familiar with.
Thankfully, there he found two of his classmates. Drew was almost positive they were in the same year, and that was Septimus. They probably didn't even talk much, because Drew wasn't much of a talker personally, he was his dorm mate. And the girl (Hanna) was a Ravenclaw in their year too, as far as Drew can recall. So... at least, right? Pushing the compartment door open, he stuck his head inside. "...Hi. M-may I join too?" Sheepish. Lots of hair ruffling here and there.

Hanna was happily sucking away at her Fizzing Whizbee, and realising how awkward conversations could be, and thinking how she didn't like small talk because it made her feel all flustered, when the compartment door opened again. It was another classmate of hers, fellow Claw. Hanna glanced down at Septimus, her body still slightly levitating, and back to Drew. She nodded. "Yup, we have room. And lollies. Want one?" She offered the bag full of Sugarplums Sweets to him.
At least with a sweet in her mouth she didn't have to talk. Or, at least, it was understandable. But it was also making her feel all self conscious. What if her stomach rumbled or something?
So, swallowing the small remainder of her Fizzing Whizbee, she said, making her way back down to her seat, "Did you both h-have a good... summer?"

The one girl seemed to be okay with Madison joining them, and she was relieved; surely the other girl would approve as well? Pleased, she took a seat in the compartment. "Hi, I'm Madison," she said to the both of them. Really she was feeling more and more anxious right now so maybe that was making her come across as a bit awkward??? Really she had no idea...
Everything would be better once they were at Hogwarts and she could settle in.
And now there was a boy joining them as well. Madison smiled at him. "Hi, I'm Madison. I'm brand new here. I transferred from Ilvermorny." Which would explain why they had never seen her before.

After all the madness in the Prefects' Compartment, Anna left there rolling her eyes until next year because hoonestlyyyy, all that silliness because of a first year. Silly people.
Again, she wasn't technically a prefect so didn't have to go patrolling the train to check if people were behaving or anything - although she had to be a role model now and yadda yadda; yeah, whatever, Ollie - SO she decided to try and find one of her friends to finally chill.
Eventually she reached a girl she recognised from Diagon Alley at the back of the train. "Hey, Penny! Alright?" Anna greeted her with a smile, finally opening the door to an empty compartment because she was ready to FLOP down on a seat and relax for the rest of the journey to the Castle.

Relief.
THAT was what Penny Goodman felt upon hearing someone call her name. A familiar voice, at that! Turning to face the Gryffindor, Pen smiled wide and nodded. "Hey Anna! Thank Merlin... Woul ya like ta sit wif me?" she asked, just short of pleading really. This was a stressful situation, you see. Where one sat could possibly set the tone for the entire school year. Or that's what Penny often told herself... and then she ended up wandering the train corridor until she found an empty compartment.
Loner status.
Even her siblings were too cool to sit with her this year. ESPECIALLY Zachary. Ugh.

Anna was already opening the door and going through it to get into the empty compartment when she turned to reply to Penny. "Sure, come on in!" She smiled, making way for the Hufflepuff to follow her in and taking a seat near the window to be able to admire the landscape before it got too dark.
Now that she had already changed to her school robes, it was just a matter of waiting until the train arrived at their destination. "Are you looking forward to the Feast?" She asked the other girl. Because SHE was and she could tell she'd be starving by the time they got there!

Scowl.
Taddy was a bit nervous as he got onto the train. He didn't scare easily, but knowing he was the first of his other brothers and sisters to attend Hogwarts was a bit unnerving, never mind that his Aunt Elisa was attending as well. But... something was different though for him, and maybe he'd find out what exactly.
There was alot of people on the train by the time he arrived, Tad was heading toward the back when he realized all the compartments were taken and filled with people. He happened upon one with just.. one other person in there. He rapped on it a bit before opening the door to see a boy slouching. "Hi... is it alright if I sit here? Everywhere else is full." He asked before he too glanced out the window.

Okay. AWESOME!
Penny gladly followed Anna into the compartment and flopped onto the seat. This was probably one of her favorite parts of the whole Hogwarts experience, the train ride to the Magical castle... what's not to love?! "Fully! I don't evah eat as good as I do at school anywhere else," she said with a grin on her face. It was not even about her family being poor, it was the fact that the food at Hogwarts was the best she had ever had EVER. "I want pudding. Been dreamin about it even!"
And there was just something about Anna that made Penny feel a bit more at ease. She found herself opening up a bit and talking. And that, in and of itself, was a huge deal for her. It was almost as if Anna was her friend! That didn't happen often either, or at all really. So this was a huge deal too.

Anna had nearly sprawled out like that first year boy she encountered earlier as she relaaaaxed on her seat. Merlin, that felt good. She chuckled at Penny's response. "I know what you mean. The food is great! Have you ever been to the kitchens? The elves are pretty nice too." She said, wondering if the rumours were true and all Hufflepuffs went to the kitchens more often than not.
The Gryffindor laughed out loud when Penny said she had been dreaming about pudding. "What's your favourite? I love the apple crumble." Anna said while starting to think about the delicious dessert and looking out the window. It was only after a few seconds that she realised the last time she had spoken to Penny it was also about food and desserts, no less, and she chuckled. "I do eat healthy sometimes too, okay? Just so you know." She added, laughing again.

She offered the bag full of Sugarplums Sweets to him.
At least with a sweet in her mouth she didn't have to talk. Or, at least, it was understandable. But it was also making her feel all self conscious. What if her stomach rumbled or something?
So, swallowing the small remainder of her Fizzing Whizbee, she said, making her way back down to her seat, "Did you both h-have a good... summer?"
She took the seat across from him which was fine by him. “You’re welcome,” Septimus said offering her at least a polite smile as he debated whether or not to just ask her name. Would that seem rude? Make her feel bad that he didn’t remember her? She did manage to remember him despite the fact he really wouldn’t count his actions in school the past couple of years as remarkable. The boy became distracted though, when candy was offered, not something he normally had access to. It was his turn to say “Thanks” as he gingerly took the bag of sweets and explored his options, finally taking a peppermint mouse before handing it back.
He took a bite to suck on, briefly noticing a passing prefect and smiled back at Daisy before she got distracted. About to turn away, there was another presence at the sliding door of his…their…compartment. Septimus looked to his companion, the girl still levitating as she answered for them. “Yeah…it’s fine,” he echoed, confirming the response. At least there was now someone appearing to be more awkward than he was. “Drew right?” They were dormmates, he really should know them better.
As for the other raised question. “Yeah, I did. It was fun,” he answered, “How about you?”
