| | Windows Under the Lake Image Credit: Muggle Dinosaur One of the perks with living in the Hogwarts dungeons is that you get access to your very own under water aquarium and you don't even have to pay a sickle. The uplit dungeon windows in the Common Room give all snake students a direct view of the Great Lake below the water surface level and it's creatures and plant life.
Under the largest windows divans and comfy window seats have been put up with many pillows in an array of colours, but mostly in green and silver as well as stacks of warm blankets if someone wants to cuddle up on a chilly night. A small magical hot beverage maker that makes tea, hot chocolate and coffee complete with cookies from the house elves and cups is stuck next to the most left window. The beverage maker is a charmed gift from Professor Marchand.
So why not come over here, snuggle up with a blanket around your legs next to one of the windows and look out at the lake and its living eco system and you might if you're lucky see a merpeople swim by or the giant squid comes and taps at the windows. |

One of her favourite things about the Slytherin Common Room was the fact that the windows looked out into the Lake. Not onto, like she'd thought they might, but into. The light that filtered through was tainted a murky green, and the presence of the underwater creatures was something Felicity found weirdly comforting.
Taking one of her Astronomy books, she pulled a large chair close to the window and sat, curling her feet up underneath her and settling in for an evening of reading. And people watching, because who could resist that when the Common Room was always buzzing and full of energy?

Lazily Bartholomew saw over to the window that looked into the warm and cozy looking Slytherin Common Room. Surely there would be some students sitting in one of those comfy seats or snazzy divans near the big windows looking out into lake so he could get some company? Peering in Bartholomew aka the Giant Squid of Hogwarts was in luck as he spotted a girl with her nose in a book. Raising a tentacle he thumped lightly with it against the window to catch the girl's attention. Hi!!

Halfway through a chapter on planetary rotation, and in one of those moods were each sentence had to be read three times because she could not concentrate, Felicity almost jumped at the noise of a tapping at the window. After taking a deep breath to calm herself, she shut the book and turned her gaze, a smile spreading across her face as she waved at the Giant Squid. "Hi, Bartholomew."
She never actually knew if he could hear them in here, having not tried speaking to him but watching him float along in the lake was kinda therapeutic.

Interesting, his tentacle thumping had caught the girl's attention. She had even shut the book she was reading for him. Now that was a plus in his book. Raising his own tentacle in mimicking the wave the Giant Squid responded with kindness in his voice and smile in his eyes. "Hello, and what might your name be young girl of the snakes?"

Having just returned from the library, Natalie entered the common room with books in her arms. All of which were about mermaids. Mermish language study, of course, mermaid grooming habits and mermaid lifestyle and history. Yes, the obsession was still real.
She was distracted, however, on her way to her dormitory, when a large blob outside the lake window caught her attention. A large GASP escaped her mouth and she BOLTED to the window where her housemate was talking to the Giant Squid. "Hi Bartholomew!" she greeted, excitedly, her blue eyes wide and alert. "Sorry for interrupting. Um.
Have you seen any of the mermaids lately?" He probably had, since they shared the lake, but she wanted to know how they were doing. |

So the Giant Squid could hear her, and conversely, she could hear him! Excellent. "I'm Felicity," she answered, and was about to ask him how he was, when a voice joined her. Shutting her mouth, she turned to the other girl and shook her head, in an 'oh, no, don't worry about interrupting' kind of way.
Because the question she asked was interesting. Mermaids!

Oh, look. There was another young Snake coming over to say hi. "Hello there!" he said while giving a friendly salute to her with his tentacle. "And what would your name be?" Hopefully he would be able to keep track of everything. He was happy to note that the one girl was named Felicity. "Pleasure to meet you, Felicity." Such pleasant children!
Oh! "You are not interrupting at all." In fact the more the merrier in his opinion. And she had a good question as well. "Yes, I see them quite often while going about in the lake." Not that he always had much to do with them.

| Sardines ♥ BHB ♥ Dallie ♥ Grumpy ♥ MY SUN AND STARS ♥ i love julia Natalie returned a sheepish smile to her housemate, glad that she wasn't mad for her intrusion. She just wanted to be friends with all of the creatures in the lake! "My name is Natalie," she said politely with a beaming smile. "Natalie McKinley, sir. I'm learning all about mermaids!" the young snake exclaimed, raising her books on the underwater creatures. "I'm learning mermish so I can speak to them and can run -- or, err, swim away if they decide to eat me." She nodded quickly. The young Slytherin's eyes were alight as she spoke, having quite a fascination with merpeople, both the scary ones in the lake and the fictional, nice ones that muggles seemed to like (and not believe in). |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Bartholomew Henry | I like shiny things. "Nice to meet you as well, Natalie." Bartholomew Henry gave her a polite salute with his tentacle as well. It was nice to hear that she was rather curious about menfolk because they really were quite interesting in their own way. Err, at least he could see how people could find them to be. "Do they teach Mermish here now? Or are you learning another way?" Were there books on it or something? He had no idea. "I don't think you need to worry about them eating you, though it definitely IS a good idea to be on your guard around them." So she was right about that.

"I don't think you need to worry about them eating you, though it definitely IS a good idea to be on your guard around them." So she was right about that. Natalie beamed at the salute she got from the giant squid. He was so friendly, wasn't he? She wondered how he got along with the mermaids and all the other creatures in that giant lake of his. "Oh, no," she replied before explaining, "I'm learning with my friend Derf. You may know him! Derfael, ermm... I don't remember his last name. But he's going to be the next Newt Scamander," she concluded with eager nodding. It was true. He was the young master of all creatures and as far as Natalie could tell he knew EVERYTHING about them.
The girl grinned when Bartholomew told her that she didn't have to worry about the mermaids eating her. That was a relief. Maybe her nightmares would give it a rest now! |

OH! Well, that sure explained a lot. Bartholomew Henry would have been slightly surprised to hear that they were teaching Mermish to students, but still he had to wonder with all the magical things they learned in the castle. "Oh, so he's very interested in magical creatures. I believe he was the boy who said that I could drag him to the bottom of the lake." That got a laugh. The squid wasn't the best with names, but there was no way that he would forget something like that any time soon.

But Natalie simply nodded, with not enough time to go into detail. She smiled fondly, amused when he said he believed he was the boy that told him he could drag him to the bottom of the lake. That sounded like Derf alright. "Probably," she replied, not doubting it for a second.
... And then her face turned serious. "Please don't do that," she said, suddenly aware that Derf probably wasn't kidding about the request. "He's not invincible, but I think he thinks he is." And what was Natalie supposed to do without Derf? Life would be terribly boring. |

Bartholomew Henry could tell immediately that this boy was important to her; it made him want to be more serious in the matter - to reassure her that he would never do anything of the sort to either him or any other children. He was more than aware that they were unable to breathe underwater without some form of assistance. "I most certainly wouldn't, and for his sake I hope he wouldn't try going down there on his own using gillyweed or the like." Because the giant squid could offer the boy protection... protection that couldn't be offered if he want by himself. Surely this Derf knew better than to try that.

Natalie was relieved to hear that the giant squid wouldn't let Derf convince him to bring him down to the bottom of the lake. Derf was smart and he could probably find a way to make it work, but Natalie wasn't gonna risk losing her best friend.
She smiled at the friendly squid. "Thanks, Mister Bartholomew. It was nice to meet you." She gathered her books back up, figuring that the beast of the lake had some other things to attend to. Who knew what the legislature of the lake was? She didn't. Maybe he was the boss because he was so big. "Oh, if you see a mermaid or two, will you tell them Natalie McKinley says hi?" *CUE EYE SPARKLE* |

Yes, he would make sure that this Derf didn't get into any danger underwater. If he was wise, he would stay away from the bottom of the lake entirely. It was one thing to go for a nice swim in the water, and another to go way out into the depths. Hopefully he wouldn't be trying gillyweed. "It was nice to meet you too, Natalie! I will certainly say hello to the mermaids for you if I see any." And with one last wave of his tentacle, he was off.
