Tucked beside the large oak doors that lead you back outside are four large hourglasses. Facing the door, the two hourglasses to the left feature a lion and a badger whereas the ones to the right feature a raven and a snake. These hourglasses track the amount of points earned by students of each House using the gems (rubies for Gryffindor; citrines for Hufflepuff; sapphires for Ravenclaw; and emeralds for Slytherin) held within.
If you are to stand here long enough, you will hear the soft clink of one or two of the gems dropping from the upper bulb to the lower bulb. When this happens, it means someone did something worthy of earning points. However, the complete opposite of this will cause the gems to retreat back up into the upper bulb. If all of the gems retract to the upper bulb, that is a sign that your housemates needs to get their act together if you want a chance of winning the House Cup at the end of the term. Will you be the reason for your House's gems to go down or up? Only time will tell.
Something about the gems falling into the bottom half of the hour glass - or, conversely, rising upwards - was therapeutic. Or, at least, in Felicity's mind. She liked to stop whenever she came out of the Great Hall and just watch, seeing where Slytherin was in the running, and revelling in the fact that they were currently leading.
Not that she contributed to that much, but, you know, house pride and all that.

She had wandered not far from her office; to the second floor in fact. As usual, there were many things playing in Kay's mind: the task that she had to keep in motion, her father's illness and of course, her lesson plans. At present, she was in the process of concocting an activity for one of the lessons she would be holding next week.
As chance would have it, she soon found herself before the Hourglasses and beside Felicity. It was nice to see that Slytherin was leading though she would have liked it to be Ravenclaw. "Hello, Ms Harrington. Slytherin's off to a good start, I see.'' Kay had recently awarded Edward Blaze ten points which obviously helped push the Snakes.
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Merlin that had been a good snack. A trip to the kitchen had been exactly what the Ravenclaw needed after that hour she'd dedicated to homework. Now she could work her way back to the towers and enjoy the book she'd gotten from the--"Hi, Felicity!" Jessa came to a stop at the sight of her friend--friend? They'd agreed on being friends, yes?--standing by the hourglasses.
Had they changed? Last she'd checked, Slytherin had taken the lead and good for them. Points were alright, but they weren't the greatest motivator for the Fourth Year. Shocking, given her house perhaps, but there it was. "Oh, Professor Stewart, I didn't see you there. Are you here to make the hourglasses change again? How do they work? Do they just know when a Professor says they're giving points and magically add them immediately?" Naturally, she had questions.
She looked to the hourglasses again. "What're we looking at anyway?" You know, in case she'd walked in on something important.

"Hi, Professor Stewart," Felicity greeted the teacher with a grin, turning her head as the woman stopped next to her. "Yeah, I guess we are." And maybe she'd contribute to it soon. Hopefully, anyway, but that wasn't on her mind, just as she was about to open her mouth to ask a question, she heard her name being called, and her grin widened.
"Jessa!" And of course Jessa had questions, and one of them just happened to be the one she herself had wanted to ask. "You took the words out of my mouth, I was just about to ask Professor Stewart how they worked, too." Because she was curious! Was there a spell? Did the hourglasses just know when a teacher awarded or deducted points? Were they psychic?!
ALL THE QUESTIONS. "Nothing in particular," Liss shrugged, answering Jessa's final question. "I just find watching the gems move kind of relaxing...." She tailed off, a slight blush colouring her cheeks.

"Let's see if you Snakes extend your lead,'' Kay said with a wink. "Or if Gryffindor will give you a run for your Galleons once more.'' In the recent years, those two Houses had worked hard to secure the Cup. She would like to see Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw get into the race too. "Oh hello, Ms Cambridge.'' Goodness! So many questions!
This professor approved!
Ravenclaws. Always so inquisitive and thirsty for knowledge.
"Since you both are interested, I'll tell you all that I know soon enough,'' Kay said, a small crossing her features. She was distracted now, from those issues that had been on her mind earlier. "Actually, I'm not here to make them change. I recently awarded points to both Gryffindor and Slytherin but first... how about you young ladies give me your thoughts on how the Hourglasses work? There is a possibility that your ideas will earn you points and you'll see the Hourglasses change...'' She left it there at that; with a mysterious air.
