Ancient Runes Lesson 2 - There Is Strength in Uruz
After a month of nothing but grey clouds and rainfall, the sunlight shimmering through the windows is bound to be a pleasant sight as you make your way down the corridors. April showers truly did bring May flowers, and it also gave the headmistress a valid excuse to hold Ancient Runes outside rather than keep everyone cooped within the walls of the castle. Getting a satisfying amount of fresh air and soaking up some ultraviolet rays was important after all, especially when final exams were just around the corner.
Exams are probably the last things on your mind, however. Perhaps a more pressing matter is at the forefront of your mind, such as wondering why today's lesson was being held at the training grounds on the north side of the castle. Anyone who knew Hogwarts well enough would know that there really wasn't much to this spacious area -- the ground was flat, the grass was always cut short, and there were some rather uninteresting ruins scattered about. Boring, right? If that is your mind-set going into this lesson, then you just might find yourself surprised.
The moment you open the door of the tower and step outside into the pleasant weather, you find that you are not able to see much of the training grounds at all. Right before you tall green hedges, standing over ten feet in height and stretching far to the left and far to the right, await. In the centre of this spectacle is an opening just screaming to be ran through, but you are unable to cross the threshold because Headmistress Hawthorne, as if on cue, steps out, now blocking the entrance, with her wand held at her side and a twinkle in her eye.
"Gather over here, everyone," she says, beckoning everyone to move forward and stand in the semi-circle area outside the hedges. "Also, take out your rune sets. There is one rune in particular that we will need today." No more was said, leaving everyone to pull out their bag of runes, try looking past the woman with the hope of glimpsing something, and wonder what the lesson was going to be about.
OOC: Take note that this is NOT the second Ancient Runes lesson your character has had with the headmistress this term. Also, please familiarize yourself with the classroom rules before posting. The lesson will continue in roughly 24 hours. The lesson has started. Please feel free to join in -- the more the merrier!

Without another word, the headmistress folded her hands behind her back and started making her rounds. She was interested to see which of the spells each would choose and how long it would take to get their rune to glow orange. Hopefully the latter wouldn't take long. They've been invoking runic energies for practically the whole year now.
But apparently following directions wasn't something that had been mastered yet. Regina blinked at Skylar, who was chanting the galdr for Uruz. Hadn't she said spell first? Perhaps the sweats were too comfortable after all...
The woman continued moving, silently casting a shield as she was entering the danger zone. Knowing some of the students in the crowd, at least one of them was bound to try something funny or lose control and miss the hedge completely. Having been an educator for over a decade, she knew that such occurrences were inevitable from those who were still harnessing their magic. Plus she was a firm believer in 'Always be vigilant.'
She had to admit it though: Jesse Cambridge, 'secret' lab aside, was impressing her. As she walked by, she gave the girl a firm nod of approval at her nonverbal water conjuration. The amount coming out of her wand was average, though Uruz would change all of that soon enough.
A chuckle escaped her mouth when the Ravenclaw was blasted back a few feet as water this time gushed from her wand. No comment was made -- that was supposed to happen -- as she moved toward Sam and Juniper, both of whom were chanting away now that they had conjured water and ice respectively.
Though why was Viv Awning casting Glacius on her rune? Oh boy... "Cast on the hedge, Miss Awning." She could only imagine how cold her Uruz stone felt.
Mentally taking note that the sunglasses had been removed without a fuss being caused, all Regina could do was observe Ronan. His rune was glowing a nice shade of orange, and then ... a fair amount of leaves were being blown around. "Nicely done, Mr. Carter," she told him, her eyes unblinking as a few leaves hit her shield.
"Same to you, Miss Kramer," she quickly added, seeing the orange rune in the prefect's hand and water gushing from the tip of her wand with great force.
Hawthorne then started making her way back to her original spot in front of the maze's opening, this time her focus on those who she hadn't seen at all or needed a moment to compare themselves. Right away she noticed that Skylar was now back on track and had nonverbally froze part of the hedge. She nodded at the Slytherin, impressed, as she kept on moving.
Edward Blaze Jr. earned himself a nod of encouragement from her. See? Runes wasn't that difficult. You just needed to apply yourself. "Repeat the galdr one or two more times, Mr. Blaze. I think you're almost there."
Patrick's stream of ice didn't alarm her one bit. She found it rather intriguing. Uruz wasn't just about 'the big bang' that some of the others were demonstrating. The effects of his spell were showing great strength when it came to control. A solid stream like that was no easy feat.
Credit was also due for Stasya. It was interested how the energies of Uruz was working within her already, whether the girl realized it or not. Such determination with that one. A smile of encouragement was sent her way. "You're so close, Miss Dalgaard-Volkova!"
Oh wow! That nonverbal work from Scarlett was also quite impressive. Those large chunks of ice were certainly something. She was about to compliment the Hufflepuff when something splashed against her invisible shield.
"The hedge is over there, Miss Burton," the woman said flatly. Of course it would be a Gryffindor... Thankfully the shield she had casted earlier was still serving its purpose well.
Regina made it back to her original spot just when Sam's spell started spaying the middle of the hedge. Pleased with everything she saw, the headmistress decided that it was time to move things along. The occupants within the maze were bound to be getting restless by now.
"All eyes on me, please!" she shouted to get everyone's attention. The headmistress waited a moment, losing over pairs of eyes, before she continued. "Now that we've got a little taste of Uruz, I want you to share a difference you noticed about your first and second casts. What did you notice about the effects of the spells you used on the hedge?"
OOC: Moving us on to the first question of the lesson! If you need to start or wrap up the mini-activity/practice portion, feel free to do so in your next post. ^______^
Now, this question is fairly simple: What was different between the first and second spell your character casted? Obviously everyone's spell was strongerto the second time because of Uruz, but Regina is more interested in hearing about specific details (control, power, range, duration, etc. of the spell effects/outcome). Think outside of the box!
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
Blue eyes shifted from her wand to the Headmistress when she began to speak again. Even while she listened, Jessa couldn't get her mind off the force with which the water gushed from her wand just now.
Even before the experiment started, she had a fair idea of would happen but Merlin's soggy beard she wasn't expecting all THAT. "Reckon if I'd been a couple pounds heavier, the hedge would've had a decently sized hole in it instead of me being blasted back the way I was." That....that was basically what she noticed about the spell when she used Uruz. "Which wasn't a problem when I only cast the spell on it's own."
But also, could they all do that again, one more time before the lesson moved on? This time, she was prepared and wanted to see what could happen in a test environment.
Actually...she'd probably try it again later on--but not in her lab. Too many breakable things in there and she wasn't sure how many of them she was willing to part with. A mess was the last thing she was looking for, y'know?

Still focused solely on getting that glow to grow brighter, Stasya had nearly missed the headmistress’ encouragement as it had happened. Instead, she’d grinned as, after about the third or fourth repetition of the galdr, the Uruz rune on her rune stone was glowing brightly orange. Which meant it was time to try the spell again, so she tucked the runestone safely into her non-wand hand before she pointed her wand back at her chosen spot on the hedge. Time to see how the rune worked. “Ventus!,” she cast, blinking as a very focused stream of hot air nearly broke a hole through the hedge. It didn’t, but she’d been both scared that it would and curious to see if it might’ve given her a hint as to what was inside the maze.
Except it didn’t, and she’d finally looked up as the headmistress had posed a question to the class. What was the difference between casting just on her own and casting with the activated rune. “After I got my rune to work, my spell kind of seemed a lot more focused. Instead or a breeze, it was more like a stream of air,” she offered as an answer. Plus, she’d nearly broken the hedge. Hopefully that didn’t mean she’d be dangerous in the maze, if her spells were that much more focused or whatever had happened.

Etta turned her attention from her wand to what the professor was saying, making sure she didn’t miss a word. Um. She paused for a moment or two, trying to figure out what the main difference was. The prefect looked rather thoughtful as she raised a hand to answer the question.
“Well, the spell had a lot more force the second time around and like Stasya mentioned, it was more focused too.” She tucked her wand back in the pocket of her jeans, glad that this lesson had been quite interesting so far. She listened to her classmates respond with their answers, waiting for class to move on.

"The edge is over there, Miss Burton."
Ava couldn't help but blushed a little when Hawthorne warned her as she accidentally shot a strong burst of water toward that woman. But thankfully the professor had been prepared herself with the shield charm so she wouldn't be soaked if something like this happened. "Yes, Headmistress. Again, I apologized." Then the Gryffindor tried to cast the spell again and aimed to the edge, and hopefully nobody got soaked by her water streaming spell.
Buuuut... Before she did that, Headmistress Hawthorne called them out for a further explanation about today's lesson perhaps. Ava thought for a little while before she put her hand up to answer the question. "From what I have experience, I can say that the rune helped with the strength of the spell." She said. When she cast aguamenti for the second time after uruz was activated, the conjured water was stronger rather than the first one so it's a valid opinion.

Ronan smiled at the praise from the Headmistress. It had been pretty nice spell work, if had to say so himself.
"I noticed that there was more force behind the spell," he replied. Honestly, if it hadn't been for his boxing training, he probably would've stumbled a bit, as he had seen some of his classmates doing. But thankfully, he knew how to brace himself against such force. Thank you, boxing.

Patrick listened to the others speaking about their experience with their rune. He wasn’t sure what exactly he had done, it felt a little more powerful but he still felt like it wasn’t right. He raised his hand, ”Well the first one wasn’t very powerful at all, barely any leaves were frosted.” He took a deep breath, this class intimidated him for some reason, ”My second one was a straight line, I’m not sue that was what it should have done though.” he smiled a bit as he tried to calm down from the nerves of thinking he did something wrong.

Skylar had to admit she'd been impressed by her young first year, when he'd successfully cast ... something in the way of ice from his feet to the hedge. Yes, she'd noticed it shortly after her own successful cast and then Hawthorne was calling them all together for a brief recap.
The uruz rune made the spell work stronger, yes, but that was something her eight year old siblings could figure out. She was fairly sure that the Headmistress wanted something more in-depth.
"There was this raw physical power that seemed present in the after the rune was invoked. Like I could use less energy and still get the same or greater result." Not that she did use less energy, because non-verbal casting and all.

Cassie had chosen the ventus spell from her options for the practice and it had turned out alright. A nice spiral of air came from the tip of her wand in response to her successful cast. But the activation of the Uruz rune adding to her Spellwork had definitely had a profound effect on it. That was for sure. Like woah! Thankfully it hadn’t gotten too crazy and before long the headmistress was bringing her and the rest of the students back to her teaching and the next question.
“The rune added more than a bit of umph to the spell it was added to,” she answered, adding a similar opinion as her fellow classmates who opted to speak up as well.

Had her question been too difficult for their young minds? One of Regina's eyebrows rose as she gazed at the students, a handful of which had enough courage to speak up. Perhaps the next question would be easier on them all and warrant more response. But first...
"Thank you, Miss Cambridge, Miss Dalgaard-Volkova, Miss Kramer, Miss Burton, Mr. Carter, Mr. Dooley, Miss Diggory, and Miss McNally for sharing your observations. All of which have validity to them." Even though some were exact regurgitations, which would have been fine had they been backed up with their own experiences using Uruz and the impact it had on the spell they chose. But, alas, some children just didn't think in that way.
"As mentioned by a number of you, the energies evoked through Uruz gave your spells more power and range. There was more force behind your magic. As I was walking around, I noticed many of you that casted Aguamenti were only able to conjure a stream trickled from your wand, whereas that stream turned into a blast of water with Uruz and hit the hedge like an incoming wave of the ocean. Or, with Ventus, a simple breeze turned into a strong gust of wind and blew leaves around."
"Yet another observation that was made was how Uruz brought more focus to your magic, meaning that the effects of your spells were more controlled. Mr. Dooley's spellwork was a perfect example of that. His ice-conjuring spell went from producing some frosty leaves to a straight stream of ice starting at his toe and ending at the hedge. Whether intentional or not, he was able to hone in on exactly where his spell was meant to go."
It was impressive for a first year, to say the least.
"There are, of course, other ways the energies of Uruz aided your spell casting that you might not have realized just yet. But I imagine you will come to notice them soon enough," the headmistress continued, more or lesson alluding to the maze she was blocking the entrance to once again. "Some spell effects, depending on the type of magic you are casting and your abilities and familiarity with it, may take a while to take shape and may not produce immediate results. Uruz, though, does tend to speed up that process as the rune does instill determination and strength within a person, which is at the core of much of our magic.
"Lastly, there is the duration of your spells. Not all spells last forever, especially when our minds are distracted with other matters. Some spells, I noticed, weakened fairly fast at first. But spells tend to last longer with Uruz, which can come in handy in a number of circumstances."
She paused to let all of that information sink into their minds. If there were any questions about that theory, then now would be a good time to ask. The woman waited a few moments for any hands to go up before moving on to her next question, which she hoped would get them to apply that knowledge and think about how Uruz would be beneficial to their own magic on a more personal level.
"With all of that knowledge floating around in your brains, I would like each of you to think of one spell that you would combine with this strength-inducing rune. When you are ready, tell us the spell you are thinking of and why you would want to use it with Uruz. Let's avoid saying Aguamenti, Glacius, or Ventus, and not repeating something that was already said would be greatly appreciated."
OOC: Thank you to the few of you who responded to Regina's question to keep things moving along. I greatly appreciate it! Hopefully we'll get some more talkers with her next question. ;)
Here is the final question of the lesson. It is another simple, but fun, one: What is one spell you would pair with Uruz and why? There are MANY spells out there, so please refrain from having your character repeat something another character already said. Agreeing with someone is definitely not a problem, though we would love to see some original thoughts here since the question is fairly open-ended.
”Uruz uruz uruz, u u u u u u u u u, u u u u u u r r r r r r, u u u u u u u u u. Uruz uruz uruz, u u u u u u u u u, u u u u u u r r r r r r, u u u u u u u u u.” Phew… This was super tiring, Could she record herself saying this and play it back until the rune glowed…
Which was exactly what her rune was doing right now. She had done it! Taking her wand and casting ”Glacius.” Again. She could definitely feel the rune, give charm some more power and strength. And it made her feel more in control of what she was doing.
That felt pretty good considering what had happened over last few weeks. She raised her hand, ”It feel more like it was in control.”
Listening carefully as Headmistress Hawthorne continued on with another question. This was something really to think about here. Which spell would she use? Raising her hand again, ”I think that Protego with this rune would be useful, when you needed it.” She give a small nod after answering. That would definitely be the spell she would use, to have more control and power too and to last longer.

Etta carefully listened to what the Headmistress said, quickly taking notes. They would definitely come in handy during exam time, yeah? A spell.. huh. She thought for a long moment, wondering what spell she’d like to combine with Uruz. Something she’d use regularly, perhaps? Another moment and she finally raised a hand to answer.
“Since you have mentioned that the spells tend to last longer with Uruz, I’d go with the levitation charm? Since it’s used regularly in classes, it would be useful to combine it with Uruz.. in my opinion.”
YesJess! | Captain Goggles | Mama Badger | Eva's Soul Sister | An OG™ | It's all in the Numbers
Listening carefully to what the Headmistress had to say and add to the subject, Skylar made sure to take detailed notes as these would surely help her on her OWLs that she was not so focused on of lately which was another story, but the Headmistress wasn't exactly the person she could confide in about that. She just needed to get through the next two months and dutiful notetaking was where it was at.
Knowledge floating around their brains? Wasn't someone being optimistic? Or maybe it was just floating ... hovering there ... waiting to latch onto something... Skylar bit her lip thoughtfully as she considered other spells in her arsenal, where she might be able to best utilize a strength-enhancing rune.
First one that came to mind was one that was NOT in her arsenal, but one that she so desperately wished she could cast. She was reminded of last year, when Brent had cast a corporeal patronus; he was only a fifth year, the same as she was and yet, here she was ... unable to conjure anything more than wisps. So much for being one of the best in her year?
"The patronus charm. Well assuming you could cast one to begin with, enhancing it with Uruz would produce something much stronger and more withholding against dementors or lethifolds."

Regina almost snorted at what he said. Whether or not she was supposed to have heard that, she did respond. "No sphinxes in there. But there are..." Nevermind. They would all be finding out soon enough. She allowed for her sentence to go unfinished as the boy looked for a rune, even though she hadn't yet specified which rune they would need to take out.
Very much a Hufflepuff indeed. Derf would have been probably puffed out his chest with PRIDE had he known the Headmistresss had such sentiments regarding him. He had had a tiiiiiiiiny bit of a crisis when he had been a hatstall, you see.
But anywaaaaay...the lack of sphinxes within the hedges was disappointing to be sure...but looking around and seeing a lack of Abey made the third year somewhat grateful. IF he was going to meet one in person for the first time, well, Derf wanted it to be with Abey for a multitude of reasons. One being that Abey HAD met one before and Derf had this kinda sorta tradition of making his Gryffindor sphinx related treats every year for his birthday. However, the Hufflepuff found himself HANGING on the woman's word...only to be left somewhat crestfallen. Although OBVIOUSLY she wasn't going to reveal what all would be happening...even if the Hufflepuff could hope.
So it was, that Derf wrinkled his nose and ruffled his hair in amusement as he found himself a spot to wait for the beginning of the lesson while still looking for that radio rune because...well...maze and directions and stuff...right?

As you all will recall" -- at least she hoped they all would remember -- "Uruz translates to 'Aurochs,' which is a species of wild ox that once existed in Europe before they became extinct in the seventeenth century. The Aurochs were were highly prized during their existence because of their slsize and strength. Because of this association, the rune Uruz represents raw physical power. Our goal for today is to harness that power and use it with magic we use on a regular basis."
Were they all with her so far? Regina hoped so because it was already time for them to put that concept to practice before she let them roam free in the maze and face what all was waiting within.
"Right now I would like all of you take out your wands, spread out, and cast one of the following spells on the hedge: Aguamenti, Glacius, or Ventus." Simple, right? "After, I then want you to take out your Uruz stone, activate the rune, and try the spell again to see if there is a difference." That was all she was going to say about that. Regina wasn't going to say what Uruz would do to their spellwork as that was something she wanted them to discover all on their own.
Nope.
Wrong.
Oops?
Good thing he hadn't reeeeeeeally gotten that radio rune out just yet sooooooooo no one would REALLY know his little blunder that wasn't really a blunder since he was just innocently assuming things. Yes. Okay...Uruz rune...that one did NOT look like a U but kinda a wonky N...although since he NOW knew it meant ox - Aurochs rather...and that was really kinda sad about them being extinct but like...since they COULD transfigure creatures and their Transfiguration professor kept going on about breeding and stuff in class...couldn't they repopulate the world with them? Derf was HONESTLY about to raise his hand to ask...but his hand had finally come across the run in question... he could kinda see the ox body rather than the N shape...thus the thought sorta went right out the window.
Sorta.
He was going to need to discuss this with someone later.
Ahem.
Okay soooooo of those THREE spells...Derf was most confident with Aguamenti - even if the last times he had used this spell in Ancient Runes class he had sorta just created a magical sprinkler system...but STILL efficient! So it was that Derf instinctively - and to stall just a bit - rolled up his sleeves and readied his wand at the hedge.
"Aguamenti!" he chirped, clearing his throat just before doing so to make sure he spoke clearly. Like usual, a small little jet of water erupted from the third year's wand. A little tinkle of water, if you will, and it was really nothing all that fantastical. But hey, the important thing was that he HAD done the spell. THAT itself was progress, you know? Flicking his wand and uttering Finite under his breath, Derf briefly pocketed his wand to get his rune ready. THIS part he was pretty good at now - probably because he had sorta taken to singing. Voice changes aside and stuff. "Uruz uruz uruz, u u u u u u u u u, u u u u u u r r r r r r, u u u u u u u u u," he repeated...several times...becoming a little louder with each go at the galdr. "Uruz uruz uruz, u u u u u u u u u, u u u u u u r r r r r r, u u u u u u u u u,
Derf...couldn't be sure if his rune was glowing orange or not (it was, for all other intents and purposes) but as far as he knew it WAS glowing so Derf held it in his wand hand against his fwooper core wand like he had seen some of the IMPS champions do last term and...well...here went nothing?
"Aguamenti?!?"
Perhaps his enthusiastic uncertainty had a little something to do with the outcome, but MUCH more than a tinkle of water came out of the Hufflepuff's wand this go around. In fact, it was like the spell had been cast ages ago but there was a magical stopper in the tip of the third year's wand and just at this precise moment it had been, well, unstopped. Thrown back by the sheer water pressure alone, Derf performed a few backward somersaults while somehow managing to hold on to his wand - although water went EVERYWHERE and had the, well, the potential to maybe knock someone over if they happened to get caught in the line of fire.
"FINITE! FINITE! FI-NI-TE!"

If the Headmistress was talking, er...Derf wasn't REALLY hearing because...um...he was in yet another sticky situation. Somewhat figuratively. He was covered in mug yet again, shocking...we know, thanks to the influence of his rune on his spell and his inability to control the powerful jet of water.
Looking quite like a wet crup that had just had a ball rolling around in the mud - only slightly less dramatic since he HAD stopped the spell somewhat quickly - Derf attempted to clean off his face while other spoke.
Er....he was more of a visual aid for the differences, yeah?
Um....tada?

Um...well...he really wasn't sure if this counted or if it was even REALLY on topic, but one particular piece of magic came to mind and...well...his hand was up and he was word vomiting before he could really process or stop himself. But hey, at least that stutter was gone?
"I've been...kinda desperate to get a Slug-Vomiting Charm to hit during a duel," he admitted rather quickly. "I know for like...you know...practicality saying something like a Shielding Charm like Juniper said or Levitation Charm like Etta suggested or Patronus Charm like Skylar mentioned makes more...you know...sense and is waaaaaay more useful than getting someone to vomit up slugs...but I just...really want to be able to make that spell hit. So like...could...um...using this rune in conjunction with a spell make it cut through a standard Protego?" Since that was always what his opponents had used to deflect it back of nullify the effect. "I mean...I ALSO know that using runes in Dueling Club is frowned upon and, you know, likely not all that sportsmanlike buuuuuut...in theory at least. Just curious."
He was shutting up now.

The Gryffindor just nodded as Hawthorne acknowledged her answer and listened thoroughly on her explanation about how Uruz helped with the spell casting. It could help them with the focus on the charm and also made it last longer. If she could take a note right now, sigh. But hopefully Ava would remember about this if or when the headmistress asked about Uruz on her theoretical NEWT. Ugh, NEWTS.
And besides those three that they had demonstrated earlier today, what other spells can be combined with this rune. Hmmmmm.... "How about disarming charm, Headmistress?" That was the first thing came up on her head since it was like her first choice on dueling. "I mean, if it's strong enough it could knock back our opponent instead of just disarm their wand."

UGH, that meant he wasn't doing it correctly and needed to practice more and that also meant he was now on her radar and he didn't like that one bit. He did the chanting again to get it this time before she had started talking. Now, this was the type of lesson he liked.
Now he would just listen or at least pretend to listen. He wasn't going to answer unless made to. It was ridiculous how much professors asked of them. Couldn't they just stand in front of a class and tell them the answers. They would eventually anyway.
Pairing with this ruined? Why did it even matter? Honestly, he was starting to doubt his uncle that this subject was of any importance to him and that he'd ever use this outside of class.

He was totally getting a kick out of this rune-spell combo, as he has now made a mini Fortress of Solitude from what used to be a harmless little hedge with his Glacius spell on overdrive. In fact he was pretty much distracted with his creation and his daydreams of orphaned Kryptonians that the lesson pretty much got away from him... until someone mentioned the patronus charm.
That caught his by surprise. Someone wants to have a stronger, more intense patronus? Wow would he like to have a problem like that. He needed to have a decaf version of this rune for his Abraxan patronus because it needed to CHILL big time. At least on those days when it would be as headstrong as its real life counterpart.
All this talk about what essentially are defense spells got the wheels in his head a-turning. Oh he's got an idea! Up goes the hand "Headmistress, I'd like to use the Herbivicus charm with this rune. Its got LOTS of uses-- we can grow crops really quickly so we can harvest more for food or medication or raw materials, or we can replace deforested areas in a snap instead of waiting decades or centuries-- oh! We can also make like a forest of THORNS and grow those real big and thick around the area that needs to be defended. Works better than a wall!"

Patrick listened to what everyone was saying, he really agreed with the one about levitating because that seemed logical. Why not have more strength so you could do as you wished and easily have it float throughout the air, that also might have helped him during the charms class earlier in the term.
“Maybe it would be nice for light spells too, give you more radius, brighter light too; just a thought.” He added as he continued to listen to his older classmates rattle off spells and the effectiveness.

A spell that could pair well with Uruz but wasn't Glacius, Aguamenti, Ventus or a repeat. Well, he would've said Lumos, but someone had said light spells already. "Bombarda could work." He knew there was a stronger version of the spell already, but shaving off the extra time it took to say that extra word could make all the difference if your life was in danger. Not that he expected that to be the case in this class.

Merlin's beard she should've grabbed for some parchment before the exercise began. Her own studies had already seen her through this topic but the supplementary notes were always a bonus. There was only so much she could get from self study and while it was a good amount, sometimes getting things from Professors proved beneficial....sometimes................
Jessa still vetted everything she was told by her Professor since that whole Transfiguration disaster but so far the Headmistress seemed to know what she was talking about so there was less need for caution when soaking up the information from her and adding it to what she already had.
Waiting her turn, the Ravenclaw held her hand in the air, already knowing several ways she could make use of Uruz.
"I'd probably try it in conjunction with a variation of the animation charm if I really think about it. Get some of my samples moving with more strength at an earlier stage in the process." Right now, it was a slow process. For the first few months or so they usually limped around without much oomph in them. She bet one shot with uruz and they'd be doing laps around their cages, bones sticking out at odd places....skin falling off...and all.....
...
.....
"On second thought maybe not.....they'd only break things faster than I can heal 'em and that'd be a whole other disaster in itself. I guess I could just use the rune to levitate things higher than I normally can." However not useful that could've been.

It was an intriguing question, and Sam sat quietly whilst others took their turn answering going through some of the spells she used most often. Which of them would it be good to have a stronger or more focused effect for? Her eyes fell on the hedge, which made her think of Herbology and taking cuttings.
"Diffindo would be my choice, Professor," Sam answered when it got to her. "To help cut through thicker branches when pruning shrubs in Herbology, and to focus the cut so it's extra clean, so the opening is less likely to kill the plant or allow it to get infected."

That would definitely be the spell she would use, to have more control and power too and to last longer.
The headmistress immediately nodded at Juniper's answer. She herself could back that up, having been walking around with an invisible shield to protect her -- no need to test if it was still working, boys and girls.
There was a brief pause as the woman waited to see if Juniper would continue her answer, but, no, the girl had said all she had wanted. No specifics on 'when you needed it'? Okay then... "Thank you, Miss Primeaux. And you are spot on in mentioning Protego. Very handy spell that is, in duels, creating barriers against anything that may be attacking you, when you're facing the unknown within a maze..."

Her gaze then turned toward the Hufflepuff prefect, who also received an approving nod. But, again, there really wasn't much of an explanation for pairing the levitation charm with Uruz. Mind you, it was pretty self-explanatory. Nevertheless, the woman wanted details.
"Indeed, Miss Kramer. Even though levitation charms are, arguably, some of the easiest spells that can be casted and are used all the time, Uruz would make them more powerful and make the effects last longer. It would be quite useful in lifting heavy boulders or anything of great size and keeping them floating."

Now this ... was an interesting response. A small smile played on the headmistress' lips as Skylar spoke. Her response was interesting indeed. Truth be told, Regina hadn't played with this particular idea much herself, but there was plenty of theory about it.
"Very true. And what Miss Diggory said is very true. In order for Uruz to take effect, you need to know how to cast a Patronus. Uruz will do you no good if you cannot produce one. But rest assured that Uruz will give your Patronus more of a kick, whether corporal or not. The energies may also bring forth courage within you so that you can cast one."

One of her eyebrows rose when Derfael started speaking. She couldn't help it. He always was one to give the more entertaining responses, which secretly amused her. He would be the one to mention the Slug-Vomiting Charm. And, of course, back it all up with a question -- the limitless curiosity in this one was strong.
"Uruz would certainly bring more power to the charm. It would make the person on the receiving end vomit slugs for hours. As for your question," Regina continued, "it would all depend on the shield that was casted and the skill of the opposing witch or wizard. If the shield is strong, your charm is likely to bounce off. However, if the shield is weak, your charm should be able to break through with the energies of Uruz backing it up."

A nod was given after Ava spoke. She wasn't surprised that the Gryffindor had mentioned it, having seen her duel a number of times. The Disarming Charm was one of those go-to charms, along with the Shield Charm, that the students were so keen on using.
"You would be correct in saying that. Depending on the strength of the spell and the energies you invoked, it could blast someone back as they are being disarmed. And, with control, you could even get the opponents want to fly into your own hands."

It took everything within the woman to not roll her eyes as her head shifted toward another student. If he didn't want to apply himself, then so be it. He was just going to have to be one of those handful of students that'd have learn the hard way.

Now this was an answer that earned the Gryffindor prefect a nod of approval AND a smile. It was certainly a well-thought response that covered a lot of ground with just one spell.
"Well said, Mr. Salander," the headmistress spoke, her head still nodding. "Your response does an excellent job of demonstrating how one spell when combined with Uruz can serve many purposes. It all depends on your intent." Regina personally liked the last option he mentioned. It just might come in handy later...

Yet another nod was given, this time in Patrick's direction. Though there were already more powerful variations of simpler light spells, Uruz was bound to make even the simplest spell just as powerful as something one would expect from a seventh year. It would be very useful, especially if one hadn't mastered the more advanced magic.
"Excellent, Mr. Dooley," the headmistress responded. "Again, it all comes down to your purpose. If you've lost something and need more light to see farther, Uruz would aide you there. There would be use for it even in a duel, as the brighter and longer-lasting light could be used against against your opponent."

Truth be told, she was expecting more than three words to come from Ronan's mouth. Perhaps he was already burnt out from his excelling performance so far in class today? Regina hoped not. There was still much ahead for him and his fellow peers. A labyrinth of obstacles, if you will.
Even though he hadn't explained why, she still nodded her head. "Of course Bombarda and Uruz would make an interesting pair. Already the spell is quite powerful on its own. But, even so, combined you'd be able to blast through practically anything. With that said," -- and she was speaking to everyone -- "use with caution."

While Jessa spoke, all the woman could do was blink while trying to maintain a neutral expression. At first she was on board with pairing Uruz with the animation spell, but then this particular Ravenclaw's purpose in doing so became more apparent. It was ... quite grotesque, to say the least. It was ... something she was going to be bringing up to Roderik. This was ... no, just no.
Not a single word left her mouth. Not even a nod of her head was given. Regina was just going to continue on to the next person, considering levitation charms were already mentioned.

The next voice that spoke up made 'overlooking' Jessa's response easy. A smile returned to the woman's lips as she nodded her head at what the girl was saying. An interesting and very practical choice.
"Thank you, Miss Tyler. That response most certainly would have made Professor Myers very happy to hear," she commented, approving the more herbological purpose. But there were other purposes, of course. "Diffindo could also be used to cut through something that has latched itself onto you, such as Devil's Snare. Uruz would make quick work of freeing yourself when pair with that spell. But, of course, use it cautiously. If used inappropriately, the consequences may be severe."
After adding on to Sam's response, Regina waited a few moments, her eyes especially glancing at those who hadn't said anything, just in case there was anything else that someone wanted to say. But, unsurprisingly, no voices spoke up. Not that the headmistress minded much. She was more than ready to send them all inside the hedges now that they were all thinking about the endless list of spells that they could combine with Uruz.
"Wonderful responses, those of you who mentioned a spell. Hopefully you all were paying attention because you will need to be constantly thinking about the spells that were mentioned, plus the spells that were not, for the practical portion of today's lesson."
Something then, as if on cue, caused some leaves to rustle on the other side of the hedge. The headmistress, unsurprisingly, paid no attention to this -- though she could tell that one of the things she had placed in there was getting a bit restless -- and just kept on talking.
"For the rest of class, you will be navigating through the maze that I have prepared for you today either individually or in pairs. Your goal is to make your way to the centre of the maze, where I have placed a number of locked chests that contain a prize to reward your achievement. This task, of course, is easier said than done. Once you step inside the maze, you are going to be put to the test as there are a variety of obstacles within. You will need to put everything we learned into practice and always stay vigilant."
Regina then stepped to the side, inviting everyone to cross the threshold and enter the maze.
"If you or anyone else get into a situation that cannot be escaped or puts you in serious danger, please send red sparks into the air and I will remove you immediately. Otherwise, you are all on your own. Good luck."
OOC: We have made it to the main part of the lesson! =D
As Regina stated, your character is to make their way through the maze, overcome any obstacles that may come their way, and get to the centre where a circle of chests await. HAVE FUN WITH THIS!
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Your character may move through the maze on their own or with a partner;
Your character will need to use magic AND Uruz to overcome any obstacles that they may face -- any spell that they would know is fair game;
Your character will need to chant the galdr to make the rune glow consistently and re-invoke its energies at some point;
You will need to title your post with what area your character is at in the maze so I know which obstacle to throw at them (if not at one of those obstacle areas, you can just say that they are "Approaching area #" or just say they are wandering around in a safe spot);
You will need to wait for me to post The Narrator and reveal your obstacle / what is inside the chest.
This lesson will end on the evening of November 25th (I may leave it open an extra day if things are doing well), so feel free to go bananas! I anticipate on posting with The Narrator at least once per day, depending on the amount of posts that are made -- if there end up being a ton of posts, I'll definitely be making multiple Narrator updates. ;)
Below is a layout of the maze for you to use as a guide OOC:

It hadn’t been due to not having a suggestion that Stasya had stayed quiet while others had offered their own thoughts about spells that the rune might make stronger. No, she’d ben quiet because she’d felt like letting others say something, and because she was just looking at the still glowing runestone in her hand as if it would tell her more about what it could do. And then the headmistress had said that they were going to finally be getting to see what was inside the maze, and her expression changed drastically. Because the red sparks spell had been mentioned, and like it had during DADA, it had made the blonde freeze in place for a second, her fingers wrapping around the runestone in a tight fist as if the stone could help her get past her memories. Maybe it could. If anything, she was hoping it would make her determination to do well in the lesson stronger again.
Either way, she’d approached the entrance to the maze hesitantly, stopping just past the hedge and looking around, silently asking if someone wanted to partner up with her. Because it had worked in the DADA maze. Working with others had helped her forget everything in her head making her worry then, so she was hoping that it would work again. Her curiosity about what was hiding inside wasn’t strong enough to get past the fear by itself. Nor was her determination, which made her check the runestone to see if it had stopped working.

Derf was hanging on the woman's response to him, although he wasn't quite sure whether or not he was pleased with it or crestfallen. But then again...wasn't that a huge part of what made magic kinda special? All the variables that came into play and such...so OF COURSE it would depend on the Shield Charm of who he was dueling. Maybe he could ask Eno to practice with him since...well...since Abey was gone.
Okay. NOW he was feeling crestfallen and his eyes dropped to his hands.
Although his feelings had nothing to do with what the Headmistress had said. He had found it all helpful. Just...Hogwarts was hard without your best mate around, you know?
His eyes DEFINITELY fell on Jessa when she spoke because he KNEW things and it made him all sorts of squinty at Professor Hirsch. He could also kinda sorta see where Jessa was going with her answer and it made him NERVOUS and SUPER ANXIOUS.
He was kinda hoping to her attention - maybe they could walk the maze together? - when they were told to, well get going. This was SORTA like being in IMPS - of which he had been rather disappointed with the age limit and such - and it sorta felt like living a bit of magical history. Something he WISHED they would do in class rather than censored debates and art projects. But in any case, Derf had his rune - still glowing hopefully the right color since, er, orange was kinda hard for him - in one hand and his wand in the other...aaaaaaand was tugging on her arm to walk with him. You know. Tooooootally casual...walk and talk.
"Dad told me to always keep a hand on the right wall in mazes," he said sagely, like he actually knew what he was talking about. "Soooooo...this way!" He also tried to catch Stasya's eye in case she wanted to come along too.

The Ravenclaw was soon on her feet, not requiring much of an invitation to go enter it. She picked up her still glowing Uruz rune and held it in her right hand, releasing her wand from its holster and holding it in the other. She smiled, a proper smile, as she quietly walked past the headmistress and into the maze itself. "This is awesome, Professor."
And whilst she'd heard of the same rule of solving mazes as Derf had, being left-handed, Sam opted to follow the left wall rule to start. Of course, it wasn't a fail-safe - it couldn't help you solve a a maze with a disjoint section - but it was as good a plan as any to start with. She followed the left hedge round, her pace lightfooted but not quite into a jog, excited to find out what her first obstacle might be, and how Uruz might help her solve it.
