Ancient Runes Lesson 2 - Growing Up with Berkana, Ingwaz, and Jera
As to be expected in April, rain had been more than prominent at Hogwarts for what seemed like forever. However, yesterday not a single droplet of water fell from the sky. The same could be said about this morning. The sky is a brilliant blue, and not a single cloud is in the sky. All in all, it is a perfect day to be outdoors. Fortunately for you, Ancient Runes has been moved from the classroom up on the fifth floor to the grounds on this fine morning. Did you remember to bring your dragon hide gloves? You are going to need them for class today!
With 10 o'clock steadily approaching, you leave the confines of the castle and take in a deep breath of fresh air before making your way through the Clock Tower Courtyard, past the bubbling fountain, and onto the sagging wooden bridge. You can hear birds cheerfully chirping and fluttering about and see flowers blooming to soak up the warm rays of the sun as a breeze gently blows. You take in that breathtaking Scottish scenery just for a moment, resisting the temptation to stop at the middle of the bridge and show up late to class. Doing so would not work well in your favour.
Once you have made it to the end of the bridge, you see the headmistress standing at the Stone Circle. Her hand rests on one of the large stones as she looks out toward the pathways. One pathway led down to the groundskeeper's hut, another the creature barn, to her right was where the Beetle had been parked, to her left took one to the Whomping Willow, and there were several others that linked to various parts of the grounds.
Hearing footsteps coming from behind her, Headmistress Hawthorne turns around, breaking from her quiet moment of basking in the sun, to smile at you. She makes a motion to a box that she had placed in the centre of the circle, permitting you to approach and take whatever is inside. Look into the box and you will see numerous seeds -- alder, birch, elm, hazel, maple, oak, pine, and rowan -- scattered within. Go ahead and grab a random seed, unless you happen to the able to tell the difference between them, while you wait for the lesson to begin.
OOC: Take note that this is NOT the second Ancient Runes lesson your character has had with the headmistress this term. Also, please familiarize yourself with the Ancient Runes and SnitchSeeker rules before posting. The lesson will continue in roughly 24 hours. The lesson has started. Feel free to jump in!
Kitty lowered her wand, angry and stung at Skylar. "Hey, I was only trying to help!" She tried to keep the hurt out of her voice but it was hard. Maybe shouting "leave her alone" was overdoing it, but did Skylar really hold it against her when she'd saved her from the monster last year?? Kitty thought that would have brought them closer. It looked like she didn't understand her classmates as well as she'd thought.
Putting away her wand and feeling dejected, the Ravenclaw prefect went back to her spot at the bottom of the hill and tried to get back to work on her runes. In the background she heard the drama with the pixies continuing, but she was ignoring it.
Her hand shook as she brought up her wand for the second rune. Pointing at the spot where Berkana was, she shouted "Intaglio Inguz!" Nothing appeared. "Breathe," she muttered, taking a deep breath to try and calm down. She could talk to Skylar later after class.
"Intaglio Inguz!" This time it worked, appearing right over Berkana. Only one more to go...

These humans were so stupid. Flailing arms, punching at, and yelling weren't going to work. The mischief-makers continued pulling hair and kicking as high-pitched cackles left their mouths.
One looked up when the spell was casted, and it let go of the girl's hair and tried to shout something at its comrade but ... blink, blink. It couldn't move. It was just floating in the air now.
The second pixie buzzed around again, swinging its foot back for another kick. Only, instead of kicking the girl, all it kicked was air. She had ducked. Angrily, noises left its mouth as if it were cursing as it turned around and dove full speed at her. But then it stopped moving all of a sudden.
Ummmm so Paul THOUGHT he would be super helpful for this lesson, but then he realized, he was LOUSY at runes, and he didn't really know anything ABOUT them. HA!

"Morning, dear!" he greeted her just as cheerfully. Ummm. Identifying seeds. Fun times. "It LOOKS like some sort of fir tree. Just a regular one, though...not a flesh eater," he grinned. Flesh-eating ones had a slightly different texture than the mundane ones. "But I would have to take a closer look to be sure." He...could also be completely wrong. In fact, he wouldn't be surprised if he were wrong. His eyes were bad and he'd left his GLASSES.

No sooner had she thought this than Professor Paul Myer's himself arrived and asked what they were doing.
"Hi Professor Myer's!" said Kitty, waving enthusiastically at the Herbology professor. "We're planting with runes!"
"I SEEEE that, Kitty! That's absolutely FUN! I'm so shocked Headmistress Hawthorne PLANNED IT!" he winked at Regina, as if they were old friends, and this were an OLD BANT between friends.
But HAHA! Regina.

Then she put on her gloves becausr it's time to plant the seed. But oh, there's the Herbology Professor coming in. "Hey, Professor Myers! You should join us planting the tree." The Gryffindor greeted him.
Paul would LOVE to join, but he was too busy being distracted by absolutely everything happing around them! He had barely given Ava a wave back when the WILLOW was attacking Zoryn (or it sounded like it) and some PIXIES ???? APPEARED? WHAT IN MERLIN'S SOCKS?

Instead of shooing him away, Regina simply smiled at him and decided, given his area of expertise, that it might be good for him to stick around. Plus it was an extra set of eyes to keep watch over the younger ones. "Oh, hello, Professor Myers. We're just doing a little tree planting. Throwing in some rune-usage to support the growing process."
"I SEE that--Merlin---and also---I would have thought the students knew not to get near that TREEEEEE--" and he was heading for Zoryn before the Willow could SMACK HER AROUND like a rag doll or something. Umm.
UMMM.

We’re planting trees!” Isa beamed and waved at the herbology professor. Now it was time to go plant her seed. Isa headed off to near the creatures barn to plant her oak tree seed. Maybe Stasya’s squirrel Dobby would be able to play in the tree. Here was a nice open grassy patch next to the barn that could do with a nice oak tree. Pulling on her dragonhide gloves, she prepared to plant her seed. After digging a hole to the appropriate depth, Isa gently placed the seed in the hole, covered it with soil, and patted the soil down. Then, she pulled out her wand and aimed it at the patch of soil where the seed had just been planted. ”Aguamenti!” Water trickled into the ground. There, that should be enough. ”Finite.”
"YES HELLO ISA----" Damned PIXIES TOO?!

PAUL WAS REACHING OVERLOAD. BUT HIS SLOWNESS HAD NOT RESULTED IN ZORYN OR DERF GETTING HURT FROM THE WILLOW, AND HE CLUTCHED HIS HAND OVER HIS HEART. EVERYTHING HAPPENED SO FAST. He...turned to Regina.
"I think I will.........leave you to your lessons next time. Merlin."

Oh, Merlin. Pixies versus two Slytherin girls.
And she did recognize those girls, so she decided to offer some help because... Why not? She had finished her work and defeating Cornish Pixies wouldn't be that difficult. All she needed to to was just shoot them with freezing charm but Ava needed to be careful or otherwise her spell would hit the girls. "Skylar, Vivi, duck!" The Gryffindor commanded as she aimed her wand at the pixies. "Immobulus persequoris!" She carefully sent the spell and hopefully the homing spell would help defeating the annoying creaturesm

The Slytherin said, a little bit annoyed at the pixie kicking at her. And she only had fifteen minutes left to do her plant thing? How was she supposed to do that with an annoying flying creature attacking her? "I need to finish up my plant. Get away!" The blonde sort of punched in the air, hoping it had hit the pixie, causing it to fly away. All she could do was hope.
Wait, duck? "Quack?!" Vivian's blue eyes looked at her side to see Ava rescuing them. Oh, she didn't actually mean an legit duck... but thank Merlin for Ava being their lifesaver! The Slytherin did as commanded and dropped to her knees, tugging on Sky's arm to duck with her as well and covering her entire head with both her arms as protection.
Move over, pixies!

Blink, blink. This wasn't any fun. Party poopers.
Skylar had been busy flailing around like a mad woman, trying to rid herself of the pesky annoyances that was pulling her hair out and swatting ridiculously at them when she heard her name shouted. Duck? Were they playing duck, duck, goose now? It took for a moment for the fourth year to react and actually, she probably wouldn't have, had it not been for Vivian tugging her arm down. "Huh?" Oh. Following suit of her roommate, she fell to the ground, crouched in a fetal position.
And a moment later, her hair didn't feel like it was being pulled out from her head any longer, as she peeked over at Vivian first to mouth an I'm Sorry and then at the immobilized pixies. Well thank merlin for Ava, at least someone had sense to not only immobilize the attackers, but to warn them so they wouldn't accidentally be hit. Yes, she'd heard Kitty in the midst of the commotion of her plea about trying to help, but for some bizarre reason she didn't trust the Ravenclaw Prefect's judgment. To the fourth year, it seemed she was always hindering her intentions, which she supposed started with Salazar Slytherin.
Ah well, it was all taken care of now. Could she get back to her runes? "Thanks," Sky muttered to the Gryffindor, as she stood up and brushed the dirt from her skirt. Now time to find her pine bracelet again ... where had she been working again? Oh right, close to the groundkeeper's hut.... Heading in that direction, the snakette kept her eyes down in hopes of spotting it dropped on the ground. It couldn't have gotten too far, right? It wasn't as if it was that windy....She supposed she could just grab a blank one. Would she have to re-carve berkana onto it if she did find her old one?
Oh, there !!! Falling to the ground in a bowing position, she hugged it when she found it. "Thank merlin!" Because there, carved onto it neatly was one lone Berkana rune. "Intaglio Ingwaz!" she pointed at the carved rune, and ingwaz carved itself over it. "Intaglio jera!"
Now time for the galdr. Focus, Skylar. "berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a" she chanted softly, repeating it a couple times, trying desperately to focus and not think about the ordeal and if she lost any hair follicles. How did Brent concentrate on recalling these galdrs in the midst of the crises of those competitions? Of course he was just dealing with single rune galdrs, not bindrunes, but still... they were so random and definitely required concentration.
It glowed, but quickly dulled, and the fourth year frowned. "berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a" she chanted again and finally. A lasting glow. "Herbivicus!" Over where she thought she planted her seed, except with the distraction she was actually off about a foot, so as was to be expected for being in the wrong area, nothing happened. "Herbivicus!" Again, nothing. Eh, it would grow eventually, wouldn't it? Was this lesson over yet? Because no offense, but she was kind of over it. She would see about figuring it out proper later, in some spare study time.

Now that Zoryn and Derfael moving on down toward the creature barn, Regina finally had a chance to look around and see how everyone was getting on. From up on her perch at the Stone Circle, she could see that a few trees had taken root. And she saw pixies chasing after Skylar and Vivian, who were running toward the Beetle now. Merlin ... were pixies besting a pair of fourth years? They weren't that difficult to get rid of, were they? Sighing, the headmistress started making her way toward them to care take of the situation, but another problem was brought to her attention. An Emmeline Sparkes problem.
"What do you mean that it is kind of going crazy?" she asked, that brow of hers raising once again (had anyone been keeping count of how many times that had been?). The woman then glanced past the girl's shoulder, gazing down were the creature barns were. Lo and behold, there was a tree there that ... didn't look normal. It was overgrown and clearly showed signs that the girl hadn't followed directions. "Did you cast the charm one time like instructed, Miss Sparkes?" Once was all that was needed. "Stay after class for a few minutes, please. We'll get it sorted out."
The woman sighed again. It was back to the basics when it came to runes for a group of them. Their lessons were also be held indoors for the rest of term, considering everything that was going on. And she was going to inform Roderik that there were certain Slytherins that needed a lengthy review on how to properly deal with pixies. As for Ava Burton, she would be getting five points awarded to her for stopping them.
A deadpan stare was given to Paul. He was going to leave her to her lesson next time? Good. Though did was he thinking that the lessons as chaos? With that, she'd have to agree when it came to certain students. "A fine example of why students taking notes in this subject is vital," she muttered coolly before moving her wand to her neck for the last time this lesson.
"Time is running out, ladies and gentlemen," she stated as her voice boomed into the sky. "Kudos to those of you that followed the directions and have properly grown your trees. For the rest of you, I strongly recommend taking notes in the future." Did she honestly have to remind them of that? It was April, for Merlin's sake. "Homework will be posted later this evening. Wrap up wherever you are and then head on to your next class."
Having no more to say, her wand was returned to its holster and Regina started her way down toward the creature nursery to see if there any way to fix the 'tree' that had been overgrown. Though she didn't say anything, Paul was welcome to follow. He had least could be helpful with this.
OOC: Thank you all so much for participating in this lesson! I hope you had fun with it. I will keep this thread open for another 12 hours for you to make your character departures. Again, thank you for being a part of this lesson, and I will be seeing you next term!

Vivian peeked a little after ducking, and then saw her pesky pixie immobilised in midair. The Slytherin blinked and then carefully stood up now that her pesterer couldn't move a muscle. Ha! As the ever mature Fairfield she saw, Vivian stuck her tongue out at the pixie and then beamed at the older Gryffindor who had saved her and Sky from eternal doom. "Thank you so much, Miss Ava!" Apparently because the Headmistress didn't seem to care that two of her students were being attacked. Psssh, okay.
Then the fourth year turned over to her dorm mate, who thankfully had ducked with her "You okay, Sky?" Vivian asked because... well, she was the first victim of those annoying flying things. And technically was also the reason why this blonde was attacked, too. Though that would have been an annoying fact, the Slytherin chose to simply let this pass. She'd do better than scream and flail during a pixie attack next time, but she was determined to never let that happen again. Ugh.
Vivian gave Sky one last smile before going back to finish up her seed. But before anything else, she had to activate her bind rune first. She had stopped mid-chant when the pixies came distracting her from work. "Berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a..." It was only followed by a faint glow, and the fourth year wasn't satisfied. "Berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a... Berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a...." It took her three tries to get the glow that she wanted, which made the Slytherin smile before kneeling over.
Alright, so all she had left to do was cast that spell. Vivian took her wand out and pointed it at where her seed would be. "Herbivicus!" With the spell casted, her blue eyes watched intently at the soil that covered her seed and it sort of glowed. Huh? The blonde blinked as she saw her seed grow bigger... and bigger... and into a baby tree. Well, she wasn't expecting a mature one, really, but she was glad that her spell work was successful. Hooray!
She was done here. Her tree was grown, and she had gotten rid -- well, Miss Ava did -- of the annoying pixies. Vivian hopped up and slung her back over her shoulder. "Thanks for the lesson, Headmistress! And sorry for being so loud!" Literally. Vivian screamed way too much the entire lesson, and it was far beyond the loudness that was normal for her. Good thing she wasn't going to get in detention for it. That wouldn't have gone well with her Ravenclaw mum. Nope, definitely not.
Vivian Iona, out!

And then time was up. Kitty sighed and picked up her materials, returning them to the box where she'd gotten them. Everything except the seed, which was obviously buried in the ground. "Thank you for the lesson, Headmistress. I'll try to do better next time!"
She thought of saying something to Skylar on the way out, but in the end decided against it. She could approach her later after classes - if she thought that would do any good.
"Bye Professor Myers!" she said, waving to the professor as she passed him.
