And it was Cassandra's turn once again. She turned her attention to those few candidates who had questions left, offering them a polite smile and a nod. They were drawing to a close very soon, and she hoped everyone felt they'd said everything they desired.

She appreciated the brevity of Andrew Rose's answer. He said his piece and didn't feel the need to over explain. Honestly, trying to explain away missing an event was almost worse than missing it. Better to shoulder up under it and move on. "Mr. Rose, do you feel it is important to be at the school at all times or just on an as-needed?"

And another thing she appreciated was a candidate who didn't lie. Lourdes Black didn't pretend like she would toe the party line unfailingly, but rather that she'd prioritize her responsibilities. "Ms. Black, what qualities do you feel the board should have to make them a successful group?"

NOTE: Questions will be closed at 6PM EST on 23 February, at which time we will post polls to select our top three candidates. We'll post questions for you as often as possible, but please be aware of this timeline.

Questions:

- For Cooper Cope: If some of the ideas you had for the school required funding, how do you think the Board should raise that money?

- For Sherman Clark: How much input should the Board of Governors have in the curriculum at Hogwarts?

- For Lourdes Black: What qualities do you feel the board should have to make them a successful group?

- For Corineus Vanderbilt: You’ve stated before that you’re not happy with the way things are done in relation to the running of the school and its safety policies, what would you do differently if elected?

- For Andrew Rose: Do you feel it is important to be at the school at all times or just on an as-needed?

- For Atticus Aldredge: How far are you willing to go to ensure that you receive a position on the Board of Governors?

General questions for those who haven't answered as of yet:

Q1. Why do you feel you are more qualified for this position than the other candidates?

Q2. If a personal or professional situation arose at the same time as an equally important situation arose in the school, which would you deem more important to attend to first, and why?

Q3. If you were to be elected onto the board, what would you ensure becomes a priority as far as the long term plans of the Board are concerned?

Q4. Do you feel it is important as a board member to work along side of the professors and keep them in the know of everything going on or do you feel the board should be separate?

Q5. Would you consider to be important for a School Governor to be in contact with the students in any way? Why or why not?

Question 6, I think

How far was he willing to go to get a position? Interesting question, and possibly interesting implications. Atticus didn't have to think too long on this one. "I am willing to go as far as is legally and realistically possible, I suppose," he replied. "It's the most appropriate way to go about it. Certainly I would not resort to any means to force someone to vote for me if they did not want to just to make sure I received a place on the board. I would much rather do my best to earn people's votes." If he was going to be elected, it would be because enough people honestly believed he was right for the job, not because he had bribed, forced, or otherwise coerced them to choose him. This wasn't about power or prestige for himself anyway; it was about Hogwarts and ensuring it and its students continued to have the best future possible. He certainly hoped he could be a part of that, but this was not a "him or nothing at all" situation.

He had just a few more questions left, which thankfully were more individualized than the generic ones that everyone answered. Plus, he didn't feel the need to overly explain many of these questions.

As he received another question - this one from Ms President and former Defense Professor - he stood up again before speaking. "As a Governor, I am NOT a staff member. Hogwarts pays staff members to be at the schools at all times." Now if he got the salary of a staff member, then this would be an entirely different ballgame, but as such was not the case. "So therefore, I do believe it is important to be available for Hogwarts on an as-needed basis."

Becky 02-23-2013 08:14 AM

Well, big respect for stating that it all had to be above board. Charles gave the man (Atticus) a nod after shooting Rose a glance for his earlier answer about not being at the other parts of this campaign. "Mr. Aldredge, ideally, what role do you believe parents should take in the betterment of Hogwarts? How would you involve them?" Good question, yup, yup.

Good answer from Rose there, Merlin, why did everything sound like a commentary in his head? Ugh. Right, mov on. Next question. "Mr. Rose, what would you say your life's priority is? Would it influence in any way your job as a Governor if you are voted into the board?"

He was on the home-stretch as far as these questions went; though he did not know that for sure, he could feel it. His eyes searched the crowds for Penney again, as he awaited another question directed for him. Ah .... it was another unfamiliar man addressing him this time.

His life's priority? Good question, but wasn't it kind of personal?

Standing up to the front of the stage again, he nodded politely toward the questioner, before looking out toward the crowds. "How many of you out there have children?" He waited for a show a hands, before going on. "Very well then. I, too, have a son. Fourteen. And as a father, I believe my life's priority is to make sure my son is safe and secure, but also that he gets the same quality of education that I received, if not better. I would go to the moon and back for my son, as I am sure many of you with children would as well. So as Governor, my interests in making sure my son has a safe and secure, quality education, would influence my actions in making sure I do what I can for Hogwarts. For all children, as if they were my own."

Becky 02-23-2013 09:30 AM

Definitely a good answer! Charles nodded respectfully to Rose and looked down at his cards. Well, he had one more question for this man. "Mr. Rose, your final question is, do you support the media's desire to have the public be informed about all that's happening with the members of the Board as well as the running of the Board itself?" Basically, will you let them be nosy and poke around your life and that of your colleagues and question every decision made at Hogwarts by the BoG?

Oh, her next question. Listening to Cassandra Rae-Branxton speak, Lourdes did manage a smile. It was another good question and it would be another where the other candidates and current Board of Governor members could probably reflect on. Not because they lacked it (they were doing a good job), but so they could keep it in mind at all times that they were running and even governing a school. There were somethings they should remember and not forget.

Lourdes stood up for her turn and walked to the front of the stage. She had a smile again, but she wasn't tired of it. They were all genuine smile, like she was glad to finally be back to the Ministry. It made her more confident about being in front, and answering questions. "I feel that the board should have certain qualities to be successful. The most important would be teamwork and unity. The board of governors is a group, and without teamwork and unity, there will be no unanimous decision. Aside from teamwork, there must be commitment and dedication to the board. Before the debates took place, all of us signed that we agreed to take on the responsibilities given to us if we are elected. There also must be willingness and enthusiasm to help serve the students and the people of Hogwarts. That one is another important quality a board member should possess. There are also other qualities a member of the board should have like lending an ear to others, listening to their concerns and their final says, positive thinking as well as patience and active involvement." That was probably enough, so Lourdes stopped. She gave a nod to the audience and a smile as well. "Thank you."

Two more questions and she was done. Lourdes made her way back to her original place and took her seat, back straight.

Becky 02-23-2013 11:01 AM

"Ms. Black," Charles began, considering how best to put this so it did look like he was listening. "You've mentioned that the board is all about teamwork and unity, keeping this in mind, what relationship do you believe Hogwarts, the Ministry, and the Board should have with each other?"

He heard the man address him again, starting off with 'your final question'. Well that was a relief, even if he might have secretly wished every question was his final question. But actually, this question was one of his favorites because he lived for media attention. "The media will do what they have to do. Running for the board and actually being a board member is a public position. So being that it is a public position, the media supplies the people, the readers, with information about people who are in those positions." It was just how the media worked; they fed off public positions. If you want to be in such position, then you should be prepared to have the media go poking around your life. "As a former Quidditch player, I live for media attention as its one of the main ways to get your name out there. If the media wants to probe, let them probe. That's their job and part of our consequences for running for a public position." Besides, it wasn't like he had skeletons in his closet.... too many at least.

With a final bow, he returned to his seat.

Lourdes waited for her next question to be asked. She wondered how the other candidates were doing, since some of them were already done with all nine questions and the others still had a fair few number left to answer. Lourdes was almost done. If her simple Mathematics was correct this was her eight question which meant after answering this one, she'd only have one more left. That was good right? There had been a lot of questions asked and it would all pay off surely.

Her eight question was asked by, once again, International Cooperation's Charles Taylor. The relationship between Hogwarts, the Ministry, and the Board, it was kind of the same with the previous question asked by the other Gavin earlier. It was another interesting question, as always. Lourdes went in front of the stage again. She wondered if her campaign manager was there, watching her. She didn't see Doctor Heiderich when she had entered the venue though. Maybe he was just lost in the crowd. Anyway... her question. "I believe the relationship between Hogwarts, the Ministry, and the Board should have a steady relationship considering that Hogwarts is within the UK. Some events may also happen because of the relationship between the three, like this debate being held in the Ministry of Magic and may also be sponsored by the Board and Hogwarts. The debate in Hogsmeade was also sponsored by the Hogwarts Debate Team consisted of the students and a head professor. Hogwarts and the Board should also take into consideration rules that the Ministry has imposed just like what Miss Schirmer, or rather Professor Schirmer said earlier about the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy. Also there are students who, after graduation, decide to apply for a job here at the Ministry so I guess the relationship between the Board, the Ministry, and Hogwarts is important." It wasn't as long as her first answers but it was good. Lourdes was satisfied by her answer and she didn't want to bore the audience with her novel-length answers. "Thank you." Lourdes smiled.

One more question to answer and Lourdes was through. She made her way back to her seat to sit down.

Becky 02-23-2013 05:22 PM

If he said that hadn't been a surprise, he would have been lying. Charles had never heard anyone quite so eager to have their life to be laid out like the pages of a book. However, it wasn't for him to judge right here. "Thank you, Mr. Rose." Time was running out, so he said nothing about asking other candidates questions; the man still could, but it was common sense now.

He nodded understandingly as Black explained her thoughts of the question and took a breath before asking her final question. "Ms. Black, this is your final question, and as the Department Head for Games and Sports, it seems very appropriate. Some believe Quidditch breeds unhealthy house divisions and competitiveness. Do you agree or disagree and why?" He asked, his chocolate brown eyes focused on the woman.

Q9 And this one was for Mr. Vanderbilt. Mhm. He eyed the man who had been doing a decent job of keeping up. Only a decent job. Nothing special, and nothing that impressed him either...not that most anything could impress him but that wasn't the point. Time for his question. "You’ve stated before that you’re not happy with the way things are done in relation to the running of the school and its safety policies, Mr. Vanderbilt, what would you do differently if elected?" Or was he one of those that just kept talking without a plan to back it up...probably not since he was able to get this far with the questioning.
Have he said that though? He doesn’t remember putting it that way, but then again every parent or guardian who has been following with the happening in the school have aired their concerns in one form or another “You know its easy to say we should have tighter security around Hogwarts -- put up higher walls or stronger charms to keep dangers out... but I figured, that’s not really a solution, one way or another things are going to get into Hogwarts—or let in unknowingly...” like that plant, didn’t that come with the new Headmistress? “... or the next danger would actually be something that borne from within.” The school is an old castle with a Forbidden Forest in its own backyard “And like what I mentioned before it boils down what is taught in the curriculum; how they are trained as Witches and Wizards. Students need to learn how to defend themselves, how to handle the dangers, how to recognize them, the basics of what to do and what not to do, even acquire advance skills that may not be part of a normal school curriculum. That way they bring with them the ability whether they are within Hogwarts’ walls or when they go out to the real world, which they all will eventually.”

Hey Ju 02-23-2013 09:45 PM

Seth was still watching rather interested as the candidates kept answering questions, some more enthusiastically than others. That was a lovely day, in his opinion. Debates could be very good, and this one was definitely a good one!

"Thank you very much, Mr Vanderbilt." The 46 year-old man, of course, gave him a nod and a polite smile. He still had one last question for him. "Now, why do you feel you will make a good board member?"
He asked, looking at the candidate right after checking the cards he was holding.

He asked, looking at the candidate right after checking the cards he was holding.

Hmm didn’t he answer this before? Or maybe that was the other debate. In any case a question was a question and there was nothing stopping him from answering it “Well other than my qualifications...” which he seemed to have covered so many times already “...I am a Son of Hogwarts. I genuinely care about my alma mater, my entire 7 years of formative Magical education was done there. When you spent that long in one place and have formed a strong bond like I have there is a inexplicable desire to want to give something back, to keep it as great or even make it better than when it first welcomed me, made me into what I am today. The fact that I have sent my nephew and another young child there shows how much I still believe in it, how I’m willing to make certain sacrifices and rearrangement in my life to get back and be involved with it again. This whole bid for the Board wasn’t something done out of a whim, or for any kind of financial reward or prestige. Like anything that involves Education it require patience and dedication and the drive to want to get things done to meet lofty goals. And I think I’ve got that in spades.”

Cassirin 02-25-2013 03:33 AM

The debate was drawing to a close, and Cassandra once again had to rise to her feet and address the crowd gathered for their debate. She didn't mind it... perhaps she was best suited to giving that address. "Ladies and gentlemen, that brings our debate to a conclusion today. I want to thank you for your patience with us today, and I would like to thank the candidates for their participation."

There was now a box set up near the door, and Cassandra indicated it with a pointed finger. "Please remember to cast a ballot for the three candidates you feel gave the best answers today and that will best serve as a member of the Board of Governors."
