Benjy loved looking at his wife and kept her hand in his as they walked into the main area of the ministry event. He couldn't help but grin at her as he found a seat towards the back and offered it to her, figuring he would take the seat next to her. Once they had both taken seats, he checked out their surroundings. Spotting their bossman a short distance away, the redhead whispered quietly to his wife. "Wes is just up there a distance. We'll have to go say hi to him later."

Mmm, food. Wes trailed in after the others, his eyes, ears, nose, and basically ALL of his senses focused on the yummy smelling buffet. "That table looks good, sure," Wes agreed with Dorian without even taking his eyes of the food.
Yum. He picked up a plate. "I'm going to have everything," Wes decided, meaning that for both Tasha and Izzy. He liked that the women liked food, because as everyone knew, he LOVED food. Was Dorian going to be eating something too? Hopefully? His former housemate relied too much on espresso, Wes knew. He was concerned the guy didn't have an appetite.
But not concerned enough to hold him back or anything. He started piling meat on his plate. "Has this uh, been checked for any signs of tampering?" Wes' gaze pulled away from the ribs to look at Dorian. Yo CMEC expert, this is your thing... couldn't be too sure these days. Did someone say zombies?

Sky smiled as she took the seat Benjy had offered her. Like her husband she to took a look around her...Oh Mr.Bossman was right over there? He hadn't heard what she said about him, right? Because she had told Mr. Bossman to deal. Not like she thought anything was going to come out of her little sentence though, it was only a joke and she knew that Wes could take a joke...Except when he was mad. Listening to Benjy she nodded, looks like he saw him too. "Yes we will. Or we could do it now seeing that we are just sitting here." Nothing else to do.

As she lifted her fork to her mouth to take a bite, Mariel happened to glance at a table close to them where a woman about her age was sitting alone. Wait.. she knew her! They went to school together, didn't they? She was sure she was a former Ravenclaw too.. a year or two younger than her. What was her name?
Mariel leaned a bit closer to Nathaniel. "See that girl over there? Wait.. don't look.. she went to Hogwarts with us, I think," she tilted her head towards the woman as she whispered to the man next to her. "Ok, now look.. but don't stare.. do you remember her name?" Oh, that bugged her.. it was right on the tip of her tongue too. Something like..
Oh, right! "Satine!" Mariel called over to the young woman as she gave a little wave. "Come on over and say hi.." She wasn't sure if she would remember her since they didn't hang around the same group of friends, but they had been housemates..
Had she heard her name? Surely not...she didn't think she had seen anyone she knew as she walked into the room, but she couldn't been mistaken. She glanced around with a smile on her face hoping she didn't look like she was crazy and saw someone waving at her. She smiled and waved back and in her brain the faces and names of fellow Hogwarts students swam through as she tried to put a face with a name.
Without officially having the connection yet, she stood up and walked over to the table and smiled, "Hey!" she said as she sat down at an empty chair at the table and then the name shot into her brain, "Mariel...right?" she said as a question.

Melissa carried her plate of food and made her way to a table and sat down. Her husband, James had leave because something urgent had popped up at the Foundation. So she was here at the New Year Bash....by herself...and feeling really awkward. Everyone was mixing and mingling and Melissa felt like she had during the Employee Orientation, the odd one out.
Picking up her fork, she poked at the food on her plate realizing that she had lost her appetite. She looked back up and sighed.
'Okay Melissa. You did this before and you'll do it again. You'll turn to the person next to you and you will strike up a conversation with them...even if you don't know them. The only way you're going to meet people is to stop hiding in the shadows. You're no longer working undercover.' Melissa thought to herself. So she took a deep breath, released it and turned to the person next to her.

Keeping a firm eye on the Grand Stage, Abilene ignored the mindless chatter taking place around her. As intrigued as she was by her coworkers personal lives and the soon-to-be's...she had just a smidge more interest in what these candidates were being asked. Not to mention the answers then given...Being Hogwarts Alumni herself, she'd mulled over sending Rebecca when the time came in place of Beauxbatons...
...But these candidates were leaving a lot to be desired.
There were a few standouts. She enjoyed that Phillips boy. He was spunky...and that Erik fellow...He seemed like an intelligent man. And of course her cousin. Thea was clearly in her element...
She picked up her water goblet and took several sips...

Melissa turned to someone she had never met before. "Hello. I don't believe we've met before. My name's Melissa and I work in the Department of Law Enforcement." Melissa smiled as she stuck out her hand to shake the other's woman's.
'Relax Melissa. You sound so formal. This is a dinner/debate function.' Melissa thought to herself.

Suddenly someone was blocking her view!
Looking up in surprise, Abilene was met with a smile...and a hand. Well, it was a smile...and not some infuriating smirk. Circe knew, she did not like that look on anyone. It was downright condescending.
Offering a genuine smile back...because the poor girl looked so nervous, she set her glass down. It wasn't outright...but the Department Head could tell these things. She grasped the girl's hand and shook. "It's nice to meet you, Melissa. My name's Abilene Schirmer."
Law Enforcement? "How long have you been with the Ministry?"

"Abilene Schirmer? You're a Head of Department. I'm so sorry to have interrupted you." Melissa shook her hand nervously.
'Great Melissa, of all the people you want to chat with, you have to pick a Department Head. She must think that you're a moron for not recognizing her. Hence her question.' Melissa thought to herself.
"Um...with the Ministry? Oh three years not counting this one. One year with the Magical Transportation and then two with Law Enforcement." Melissa replied not realizing that she was still shaking the hand that was offered. Then she realized something.
"Schirmer? Are you related to Althea Schirmer?" Melissa blurted out the question before belatedly realizing that she was talking to a Department Head.
'Okay is there a hole I can crawl into now?' Melissa thought to herself. 'Open mouth, insert foot in mouth'
Melissa tried to maintain her smile even though she knew that she was blushing in embarrassment.

If the girl was truly sorry for her interruption...she would've simply walked away. She hadn't, though...and all was well. Abilene didn't hear anyone of interest talking at the moment...So, she could chat for a tiny bit.
One thing was becoming more and more apparent about Melissa, though. She was all nerves. How on Earth has she survived two years in Law Enforcement? Surely she wasn't out in the field. Perhaps she was an office clerk...or something. "Three years spanning two departments?" That was certainly interesting..."Why did you switch, if you don't mind me asking?" Abilene was just curious, of course. She also figured it was better to keep the girl talking...lest she have a nervous breakdown in the middle of the ballroom. She was a blushing mess.
And of course that was asked. It always was. "Yes, ma'am. We are related."...but she hadn't offered anymore information than that. Best to keep them guessing. "Why don't you have a seat...?" Abilene patted the seat next to her.
Taking her Goblet she, being as calm as possible sat at the edge of a table and was taking some valuable notes on some parchment with a muggle pen, She really just loved muggle pens. Especially this one, the ink flowed from it smoothly and effortlessly, better then a quill. She was sitting minding her own business when the woman sitting across and two chairs from her was interrupted by watching the debate when another woman introduced herself. Athena almost.. ALMOST chocked on her water when she heard that the woman sitting across and two chairs down from her was Ms. Schirmer .. In other words.. her new boss.. Surely she should of known that but the young blonde didn't she looked up at the two and looked away quickly hoping they didnt notices her awkward staring.. She would wait toll the other woman left to introduce herself properly

'Yes a seat would be good. That way I won't faint at her feet.'Melissa thought to herself. Taking a seat, she took a deep breath and slowly released it before turning to smile at the woman.
"Why the switch? Believe it it not but I decided that I wanted more action in my life than making portkeys...not that making them was boring." she explained to Abilene.
"Before I left the Ministry to take care of my kids, I worked as an undercover buyer for four years. So when I came back to London I decided to try out something less dangerous but found that it wasn't for me." Melissa looked over to where her Department Head sat with his wife.
"So the following year, I applied for a transfer to Law Enforcement. I haven't been out in the field for years, so right now I'm working in the Muggle Artefacts Restoration Unit. I'm slowly getting my feet wet as the saying goes." Melissa finished telling Abilene.
As she talked, her nervousness began to dissipate. So she asked Abilene a question of her own.
"I know that the Specialty Area Department is relatively new, so do you find it challenging coming up with new ideas to help keep this place running smoothly as it is now?" she asked politely.

Reason: Adding Athena in
Rush? There was no rush. "I just wanted to grab seats before it got too packed in here. Isn't there some debate or something boring going on?" he asked as he lifted a fork full of mashed potatoes to his mouth. Free food was ALWAYS the best food. Always.
Nathaniel wondered how EC was doing with his grandparents. He assumed that they were all asleep back at his place. Wait, why was he worried? It wasn't like this was his grandparents first night ever with a baby. He rolled his eyes.
Mariel had spotted a girl that they possibly knew? Great. No he didn't want to talk to some random possibly former classmate of theirs. SIGH. He went to look but then Mariel said not to. Did she want him to look or not? What was with this girl. He snuck a glance at her. She did look familiar.. oh yep, Mariel remembered her name. And now she was inviting her over to them.He just wanted to enjoy this night. Not with random people joining them. After all, he HAD gotten dressed up. Nathaniel didn't dress up. He liked being comfortable but he dressed up to impress Mariel. He wasn't sure it was working. He thought this would have been a good time to talk to her. Out having fun, dinner and a little chat.
"These rolls are amazing" Nathaniel said to Mariel. They could both act weird now.
Mariel lifted her green eyes to the staging area at Nathaniel's words. Yes, debate.. she supposed that was the main reason for today's event. "Yeah, my boss is one of the candidates," she said lightly as she vaguely watched the people on stage answer questions. She thought maybe she should pay attention, but the BoG campaign didn't interest her all that much. Sure, her nephew went to Hogwarts now, but that was more her sister's responsibility than her own. Besides, she was sure the admin at the British school was doing a much better job of things than when they were there and werewolves were roaming the corridors. Shudder.
The brunette glanced over at Nathaniel again after she had motioned for Satine to come over and he looked.. uncomfortable? annoyed? disappointed? She wasn't sure, but he seemed a little off now. Did he not want to talk to anyone else? That was weird.. they were at a party for Merlin's sake. Why would he come if not to socialize? She shrugged it off and turned back to her plate, taking a few more bites.
"So.. tell me about your new job," she said, before turning to give him an odd look. Amazing? That was an interesting way to describe bread, Mariel thought as she glanced at the roll on her own plate. If you say so...
SPOILER!!: Satine

Mariel started to butter her roll, intent on trying it to see if it really was amazing when she heard Satine's voice as she joined them. Looking up, she gave her fellow former Claw a smile and she nodded. "Yes.. it is Mariel." Good.. the other woman did remember her, even if she sounded a bit unsure. But it had been six years or so since she left school so she wasn't expecting anything different. "I was a Ravenclaw too," she said, hoping to refresh her memory a little more. "Class of '73."
"Do you remember Nathaniel?" Mariel added, gesturing to the man sitting at their table. "He went to school with us as well." Though she was pretty sure they weren't well-acquainted back then.. so might as well introduce them now. She was sure that was the polite thing to do. Turning back to Satine, she said, "So.. what have you been up to the last few years? Are you working with the Ministry now?" Mariel hadn't seen her at work before.. but maybe others besides employees were invited to attend too. Either way.. time to catch up, yes?

Her boss. Was that the person she said hello to before they sat down? "The chick that you said hello to before we got food?" he asked Mariel. If so, her boss was kinda hot. This debate thing was boring. Nathaniel didn't even know what this Board of Governors was about. He didn't really care either. He had a feeling that this junk wasn't going to affect him.
Picking up his last roll and stuffing it with some mashed potatoes. Delicious. He was now eyeing the piece of cake that he'd picked up as well when Mariel started asking about his job. "I don't know all of the details just yet but I know I'm in the environmental department." he said with a smile. Wow, did that sound boring. Mariel wasn't going to want to continue with that conversation much long. From what he remembered, Mariel didn't care for the outdoors too much. "I think I'll enjoy it. I love being outside, ya know? Surely she remembered him being out on the grounds all the time at school. Being up in the trees like a little monkey. He wanted to ask Mariel how her father was doing but he didn't want to bring up such a touchy subject. He'd save that question for later.
And the girl that Mariel had called over had arrived. As he listened to Mariel give this girl a refresher on who exactly she was he heard his name mentioned. He looked up mid bite of cake and nodded at them. Yes, get the chit chat over. Maybe she'd return to her table or something and Nate could have the conversation with Mariel that he'd been wanting to have for a while.
If he were elected to the board...there were a great many things Erik would change in the school. But that wasn't the question. The question was about his long term goals for the school. Easy enough.
Erik stood up and made his way to centre stage. "I believe security is the first concern the Board of Governors must deal vith. It is a short-term goal though. Once the school is secure from outside dangers, threats, or persons with questionable backgrounds," he shot a glance right back at Roxanne, because he hadn't missed her look. He wasn't a spotlight seeking, evidence hiding American prosecutor turned zombie hunter, unlike her. And unlike her, he hadn't lied once this evening. "vhen we can move on to more noble pursuits."
He cleared his throat importantly. "Some long-term goals I vould like the Board to achieve are to equalize vhe distribution of funds for all academic disciplines throughout the school, so vhat equal improvements may be made to the greenhouses, the creature grounds, the defence training rooms, and so on." Not only the library was deserving of a makeover in Erik's opinion. "I vould also make it a priority to haff more educational opportunities extended to students. I mean opportunities like a student exchange program vith other schools of magic, so that students can expand their horizons and can be exposed to a variety of people and cultures vhile their minds are still young and absorbent. I vould like to continue to offer seminars on various subjects and professions to the students, but I vould also like to see vhe classes going on more field trips beyond the castle's valls and grounds.
"Vis is a long term goal, though, for as I said, securing the castle must take place first before ve feel confident enough to allow students on field trips." He nodded and gave a small wave to the audience with this also excellent answer. "Vank you."
Erik took his seat and waited for his next question.
Bjorn applauded enthusiastically after this answer. It was short and succinct, yet eloquent. "Security, yes! Very important!" he said aloud, mostly for the benefit of others' hearing. "And who better than a security expert?" he wondered aloud.

He took his time getting to centre stage this round, as he was thinking of the many, many things he'd like to see Hogwarts do to 'invest' in the students.
"Vell," he said thoughtfully, both hands tucked loosely into his pockets, "I vink there are a number of vhings Hogwarts and the Board of Governors could do to invest in the students." His eyes took on a sort of sparkly look as he continued speaking passionately, and honestly.
"I for one vould like to see a study abroad or student exchange option made available to vhe students, to increase their worldliness and vheir options post-graduation. How best to know vhat is out vhere vhan by exploring it yourself? I vould also like to set up a mentor program with prominent, contributing adults in the community, or even vith willing professors and Governors, who vould be able to provide career advice and general guidance and perspective vhen students need it."
The teenagers he had seen could certainly use some perspective. "Other vays to invest in the students vould be to show them vhat we care.. .vith our time and our money. Governors should take vhe time to be present at school events like Quidditch matches, and should set up a scholarship fund to help students continue vheir educational goals beyond Hogwarts." He certainly wouldn't have been where he was today without a little financial aid.
"Finally," Erik needed to wrap up this answer, as he was getting thirsty, "I vould like to see Hogwarts invest in the students by taking a vested interest in vhe changes the students and their parents vould like to see in the school. An open board meeting over vhe summer vould be a great way to get feedback from the community on the school. Perhaps vith a support system of people who care about Hogwarts' success as a school and as a place to grow up, Hogwarts vill once again be a safe place to learn."
He tilted his head in something of a half-shrug and, still smiling at the audience, turned his smile on the Mr. Isaacs who had asked the question. "Vhank you sir." He resumed his seat.
Erik had clearly hit the nail on the head here. Mentorships would lead to job opportunities, as would study abroad stints. "Here here!" he said appreciatively after the comment about perspective. Everyone knew that teenagers could do with a dash - or gallon - of the stuff from time to time.
Bjorn gave an appreciative clap when Erik mentioned being present. Right, because Reynolds couldn't do that, what with his bookshop-and-daughter business. Smirk. Bjorn further smiled at the mention of a scholarship fund. Excellent idea! And finally, that open board meeting once a year. "Bravo!" he commented appreciatively. "That's half the point of the Board!"

No, no he would take this question seriously.
"Oh I'm sure vhere are a share of passionate parents out there, but you run into crazies vith any job you take, isn't that right, Mr. Reynolds?" Erik raised an eyebrow, clearly alluding to the earlier question that had called the bespectacled man out on his employment ADD. "I'm confident vhat vith the election of eight new, qualified Governors, however, the Board vill be more vhan equipped to handle any parental concerns and address vhe serious ones. It is our job to serve vhe constituents of vhe school, you'll recall." Yes, Nolan knew he was asking a weak question, yet he asked it anyway. Fool.
Erik smiled firmly, but not unfriendily, and turned the question back on the asker. "Besides, Nolan, didn't you suggest open 'office hours' for vhe Governors? I fail to see how an open board meeting is any different. If anyvhing, you might get more complaints at vhe individual level via your open-door policy vhan you might see at a once a year town hall meeting vhere people haff to take turns speaking and listening."
Erik could just see one parent singling out a specific governor and regularly attending their office hours just to put a bug in their ear or just to chew the fat. Great Odin's raven, no one wanted that.
Bjorn breathed a sigh of relief. It was this part that he was most worried about, the open questions from candidates. But Erik had handled it masterfully! An almost inaudible sigh of relief came from his lips. Then another smirk came as Erik fired right back at Nolan. Why yes, he HAD suggested that! Excellent memory that Vinteren has!

Benjy took Sky's hand into his own once they were both seated. He nodded slightly to her comment about going to talk with Wes now because he understood that they might want to get it over with now rather than wait and have something happen. Though they could wait and watch the debate first. "Whichever you prefer, Sky." He said giving her hand a gentle squeeze. She had been here longer than Benjy had so she probably knew the boss man a bit better and could determine when was a good time to talk with him and when wasn't. So he left it up to her.
