Derek was still sitting a little further away from all of them, having his breakfast quietly and listening as the others spoke. He glanced at them every once in a while, but looking down at his food whenever some of them motioned as if they would look at him.
When the loud crash happened, the young man immediately perked up and stared at the entrance. When Jade spoke up, he glanced at her before putting down his coffee cup and standing up. He didn't announce he was going to go see what it was, because... well, it was kind of obvious, wasn't it?
Ugh, they were all looking at him now, he could tell. But really, there was not much time to think about that - and it was good that he was getting out of there, to be honest; that way he would be out of their sight.
Derek knew there were still a few people missing - or something like that, right? Hadn't the Head of Department mentioned someone missing? - but he still pulled out his wand as he made his way to the entrance of the tent, just in case. Without looking back, the 26 year-old walked through the door and went outside to check what was going on.

"I don't know but we'd better check on it. Maybe it was Elisabeth?" She was still thought to be sleeping or something, yeah? So perhaps she was making a big entrance?
And the Derek was up and moving quietly towards the entrance. Hm. Ashley looked around at the others before rising too and heading in that direction. Best to be cautious, yeah?
Jade started to get up as she saw Derek head to the opening of the tent and Ashley asked about Elizabeth.
She called out to Derek, "Wait!" before turning to Ashley more than a little distracted with Derek and the noise, "I sure hope that it is Elizabeth. I'd hate to have an animalistic surprise."
Outside, a huge brown bear came looking for food. It wondered around the tents as it searched. It came near Roxanne's tent but backed up slightly as it heard voices coming from the tent.
It took another step back as the tent flap opened and--

Derek did hear Jade calling out his name, but he didn't look back. That had been a pretty loud noise and either it was something wild or the people who were missing had gotten themselves almost killed with whatever they were doing.
When the former Gryffindor finally stepped outside, he gaze went upwards, directly to the huge bear's face. He froze right in front of the tent's entrance and blocked the other people's way out. No sudden and abrupt movements now, otherwise it might get bad. So Derek wouldn't let any of the people inside come out. At least not for now.
Standing still at the entrance of the tent, his left hand touching the side of its 'door', Derek didn't raise his wand towards the bear. He used his peripheral vision to try and spot something he could use to distract the animal with. Waving his wand ever-so-slightly, the 26 year-old made one of the rocks nearby - but far away enough - levitate and fall back down with a rather loud thud.
......Go on, bear. Look the other way. And flee, preferably. Derek didn't want to have to stun the creature or anything. Come on now, thing. Go away.

As Derek ignored her and headed to look outside, Jade mumbled under her breath, "I can't believe he would be so stupid." She got up and followed him to the opening of the tent. There she gasped as she saw the biggest brown bear she had ever seen. And that wasn't saying a lot because she had never actually encountered a real wild bear before.
As Derek used his wand to levitate a rock outside in order to distract the bear, Jade silently applauded him and really hoped that it would distract the bear.
The bear curiously stared at the tall man standing in the opening of the tent. It was fine with him just standing there but after a while, the bear lost interest. So it started to take a step away from the tent and wander over to the other tents in search of food.
Just at that point, a big rock to the right of the bear, floated up in the air. It spook the bear badly that he turned and let out a thundering growling-sound that shook the ground.

Derek felt someone behind him and quickly glanced to see who it was. It wasn't that Nathaniel bloke; it actually was Jade. The former Gryffindor stretched his left arm to the side to not let her pass and slowly pushed her back. He couldn't push her all the way back inside, but at least he made sure she was behind the entrance.
Still keeping an eye on the bear, Derek felt his inside flipping a little when the animal went towards the other tents. Wasn't there someone missing for breakfast?? They were probably still in their tents! Bloodyhell, he needed to d--
Oh, the bear was distracted by the dropping rock. Good. Maybe now it would leav--
Derek stepped back and pushed Jade backwards even more. Flobberworm! He raised his wand a bit in the bear's direction and stood still. He wouldn't attack the creature..... at least not yet. It hadn't done anything apart from growling, so there was no reason to stun it yet... "Go back inside." He told his co-worker, without taking his eyes off the wild animal.
Just go, bear... there was nothing to see there. Go away and Derek won't do anything to you. Leave.
Stare.

A BEAR.
A HUGE BEAR.
Her coworkers saw this, yeah? Ashley stood behind Derek and still in the entrance of the tent, wand up and ready to be used if necessary. And Jade and Derek were what, going to confront the thing? The blonde didn't approve. Bears weren't exactly the friendly type. She did think that moving the rock was smart and she watched on with wide eyes when instead of scaring the bear off, it seemed to anger it. "Merlin's beard." She said, shaking her head.
Turning back to the others inside, she whispered, "Who knows something about bears" Bear whisperer in the house?

Jade grunted a little as Derek gave her a hard shove back into the tent. "What are you do--?" She started to ask as she heard the bear expressing his disapproval of Derek levitating the rock. "Oh, god!"
Turning to Ashley who had joined her and Derek, Jade replied, "I have no clue about bears but I do know that making them angry isn't the way to go." She gave Derek a pointed stare.
She looked behind Ashley where Roxanne and her fellow environmentalists were, "Um, you guys maybe anyone of you know what to do with an angry bear?" They sure could use some help here. She wasn't going to be stuck in this tent for the duration of the trip, No, sirree!
Meanwhile, the bear angrily took a few steps towards the tent that housed the wizards and witches. He roared his disapproval once again.
He neared the tent and sniffed around. There were people there and food, more importantly a lot of food.

Why were Ashley and Jade still there? Derek was pretty sure he had told them to go inside. Did women ever listen? The former Gryffindor had started to believe a long time ago that they just talked. A lot.
There went jade just talking instead of doing anything. Well, Derek was pretty aware of that, thank you very much. He gave the bear a glare; not that it was the animal's fault women spoke so much, but Derek wouldn't turn around just to give them the look. He had things to deal with right now other than interacting with mental people.
Great. The bear was now nearing them. Stupid thing. "Protego Maxima." The young man cast around the area, waving his wand firstly in a horizontal line, then pulling it upwards, drawing an invisible plus sign in the air. A magical shield appeared around their tent and the one he reckoned there were still people in.
He couldn't make the bear leave without enchanting it, so the best way to go was to protect them all for now, he supposed, and wait for ideas.
