Melissa quickly entered the room and waited politely for Mr. Ferguson to sit down before taking a seat herself.
"Thank you for taking the time to see me, Sir. You told me that you wanted to meet with me. I hope that I didn't do anything wrong." Melissa asked worriedly.
She tried to recall what she might have done that got her in this chair right now. But she couldn't think of anything. Melissa decided that she would stop jumping to conclusions. She would wait to hear what her Department Head had to say first.

Well now this was odd. "Melissa, please have a seat." Wes repeated, waiting for the lady to sit down before he sat too. Gentleman's manners.
He shook his head at whatever she was babbling about already and pointed specifically to the chair she was supposed to be sitting in. "No, you're here because you requested a promotion. You were the one who initiated contact," in wanting to see him, was she not? "I generally don't handle promotions via owl." So that was his sole reason in wanting to see her, he supposed.
He smiled pleasantly and ruffled through a few papers on his desk. "How long have you been working for us now, Potter?"

"Oh I really do apologize for my confusion. I just didn't expect that interviews would happen so quickly." Melissa quickly apologized, while she proceeded to sit down despite the fact that she always believed that junior staff usually sat after their superiors did.
...and even though he was smiling, Melissa knew that he was a busy man and couldn't afford to waste time, chit chatting with her, so she sat up straight and answered his question.
"This will be my third year with the MLE. Fourth with the Ministry, Sir." Melissa provided the information.
'Of course that's not counting the time I spent in the Department of International Cooperation back the U.S. branch, but I'm sure that he's not asking about that right now.'Melissa thought to herself.
She sat quietly waiting to hear what Mr. Ferguson had to say next.

Jaxton knew the time of year. It was promotion time. It was about as good a time as any to do what he wanted to do. . . But he loved his job and leaving it would kill a little bit of him. He sighed as he walked through his Department, and then his own Division to get to his best friend's office.
He guessed he was lucky in that respect, Wes knew how much pressure he'd been under lately, what with organising a wedding, a pregnant fiancee, finding out he had both a son and a daughter, and having his daughter become a wood-eating zombie... It hadn't been the easiest few months - especially with trying to crack two cases - one of them being crucial to Kyle's getting better.
He sighed as he finally made it to stand in front of Wesley's door and raised his hand slowly.
Now or Never, Tanner. Grow up and knock!
Taking a deep breath, he knocked on the door and then waited on baited breath for Wes to finish talking to whomever was in the office. It was simply polite to let him know that someone was waiting - so they didn't die of shock when they opened the door.

Her third year with them, that was right. Wes could remember when she had been just starting out with the offices on the other side of their floor. He flipped open Potter's file, which happened to be on his desk already, and nodded.
"You used to work in Magical Transportation, correct?" He looked up and frowned at the sound of a knock on his door. "Do you mind if I see who that is?" Wes tilted his head toward the knock. She could say no, of course, since this was her interview for a promotion. He wouldn't interrupt it with her permission.

"Yes I used to work in Magical Transportation as a Portkey Manufacturer." Melissa answered politely to Mr. Ferguson's question. Then she frowned when she heard someone knocking on the other side of the closed door. She knew that Mr. Ferguson was a busy man and most likely had other interviews and meetings alread scheduled for the day.
Did she mind if Mr. Ferguson saw who it was? Yes she did because she had waited patiently for her turn to be seen and so should the other person. But she couldn't tell her Department Head that. Besides it could be the Minister himself, although she didn't think that he would need to knock before entering.
In a quandry, Melissa answered him the best way she knew how. "I don't mind if you see who that is. That way you know who is waiting to speak with you after you're done speaking with me, and that person knows that someone is already in here speaking with you." Melissa politely told him.
There she had said it. She had already waited to speak with him about her promotion, so another few more minutes waiting for him to see who had knocked and before getting to his interview with her wasn't going to matter either way.

Transportation, portkeys. That was correct. She had been there working under Recard, but she had made the choice to move to Law Enforcement back when Bole was still here....sort of...
He would have asked her more about her background but, well, he was going to be distracted until he knew who was waiting on the other side of the door. He nodded at Melissa's answer - quite polite of her, really - and stood up from his desk. "Excuse me a moment," he dismissed himself, moving swiftly to the door to see who it was.
"Jax!" he was half-surprised and half-elated to see one of his best friends there. The man had been noticeably absent from the offices lately, but Wes knew where he had been and what he had been up to. So he hadn't been concerned, until now. He was sure his friend had a good reason for coming to his office... as formal as it was of him.
But he did also have someone else already in the office, and she deserved a fair share of Wes' time too. So he frowned and took a moment to decide what to do with Tanner. "I hate to do this to you, mate, but can you wait out here for about," he glanced at his watch, "fifteen more minutes? I have someone else in my office at the moment. It won't take long though." She wasn't in trouble or anything.
"Thanks," Wes didn't really wait for an answer and clapped his buddy on the back. With a crooked smirk, he closed his door again and returned to his seat. Heheheheh he'd just shut the door in the Head Auror's face. He wasn't worried; he found it funny actually, though on second thought maybe he should be more worried about the weird expression on Jax's face....
No, he would see to that later. "Sorry about that," Wes picked up the conversation with Melissa. "So your work record here looks pretty decent, Melissa. You show up on time, you seem to be a team player..." he turned a page in her file, "and you have a solid background working with Muggles and Muggle products, as far as I can tell." She had been an undercover buyer at one of her jobs, if that was correct.
He leaned back in his chair some and studied Potter. "What are your long-term goals, Melissa? What do you want to get out of working in Law Enforcement?" And why had she switched departments, really? He wanted to know.

He leaned back in his chair some and studied Potter. "What are your long-term goals, Melissa? What do you want to get out of working in Law Enforcement?" And why had she switched departments, really? He wanted to know.
Melissa waited as her Department Head got up to see who had knocked on the door. She was glad to hear him tell whoever it was that they would have to wait until he was done speaking with her.
'What are my long term goals? Good question.' Melissa thought to herself as she thought out her answer before replying.
"I have always wanted to be more involved in the Law Enforcement part of the Ministry. I wasn't able to do it when I got married and started a family because I didn't want to put my family at risk. But now that all my children are all grown up and able to protect themselves, I believe that I can now try to achieve what I spent all my years training and studying to be."
Melissa hoped that Mr. Ferguson didn't think that she no longer cared about the safety of her family. She still did. That was why she had applied to transfer to the Department of Law Enforcement, two years ago. She wanted to make sure that her family would always be safe from the criminals out there in the world, and the only way to do that was to catch them first before they did any harm.
"I have degrees in both Wizarding and Muggle Law, as well as, a degree in Forensic Psychology. I would like to eventually be an active member of the Law Enforcement and Security Division of this branch." Melissa knew that this promotion, if it was offered, wouldn't be that, but she was willing to wait. Little steps at a time.
"Most people don't know this but outside of the Ministry I help my husband run the Security division at the Matthews Foundation. I help profile the potential criminal elements our investigators might end up facing while they are providing protection services. I also assist in collecting evidence." Melissa paused for a minute to let that piece of information sink in before continuing.
"It was only after that Zom...I mean that situation we had last year where I helped collect evidence and give my input on what I thought would be the possible cause, did I realize that I actually wanted to do that here in the Ministry too. I want to catch the criminals before they get to hurt others...like my family or anyone elses. Prevent the crime before it actually happens if possible." Melissa ended her explanation.
She realized that she had rattled on, but Mr. Ferguson had asked, and since time was precious, she knew that she couldn't afford to beat around the bush.

Wes listened quietly and respectfully to Melissa's self-assessment and explanation. At the part about her degrees in Wizarding and Muggle Law, he flipped through part of her file and read something, then closed her folder shut and continued listening, albeit now his eyebrows were both slightly raised.
Her two degrees were not explicitly listed in her biography, nor was any mention the Matthews Foundation. "Tell me more about this Foundation you assist your husband with," he asked quietly. "It seems to be a new development in your life." It was remarkably absent from her file he had acquired from Magical Transportation. He had some record of her attending Harvard and a school in Salem, but from reading her file, did not have the impression that her theoretical training in law would necessarily equate in competency in the field.
Still, he had a position in mind for her. "You must realize, Melissa, with your... educational background," which was what he would call it, "that in the eyes of the law, all criminals are considered innocent until proven guilty. So most of our jobs are not so much about preventing crime as prosecuting it... and that would be why you don't see many divination experts employed on Level Two." He gave her a wry smile and continued. "However, I think your studies and knowledge of Muggle criminology and Wizarding law can still be of use here, in your same division."
He just had to help her see how.

Mr. Ferguson's question about the Matthew's Foundation was an legitimate one, because Melissa knew that it had not been reflected in her resume when she first returned to the Ministry. It still broke her heart whenever she thought about how the Foundation was formed but she knew that she had to tell her Department Head about it.
"Yes it is a new development in my life. The Foundation never existed until after I transferred over to this department. The reason for that is because it was established in memory of my brother and his family who were killed in a car accident, a month before I joined this department. We set up a trust fund for my two nieces who were the only survivors. My sister-in-law was really active in charity work and the Foundation was set up to continue her life's work. It also helps student, both muggles and wizarding, in furthering their education, by offering scholarships. That was my brother's life's ambition. To help those less fortunate than they were.
The security division was only set up at the beginning of last year, when an incident happened at one of the Charity Gala Fund Raisers, where one of the VIP's got attacked by a radical anti-environmentalist. That is when the Board Members decided that we...the Foundation needed to provide protection for our wealthy sponsors. The Headquarters is back in the States although we have a small division in London. " Melissa explained.
As for the innocent until proven guilty statement. Melissa decided that she needed to clarify her stand on that. "Yes I agree that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. But I also know that despite what it's supposed to be, most people still believe that the accused are guilty, until they can prove that they are innocent. I just want to make sure that when we do apprehend someone, that we have the right person the first time round."
So Mr. Ferguson believed that her knowledge could still be useful in her own division, the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office? She knew that it did. She just wanted to do more than just work with Muggle Artefacts, but Melissa knew that everyone had to work somewhere, so if it meant that she still had to work with Muggle Artefacts, then she would continue to do so to the best of her ability. So she waited to hear what her Department Head had to offer her.

Jaxton looked up from where he'd been spying on his own shoes as the door in front of him opened. He smiled at his best friend, though he couldn't do it as openly and as wide as he normally would have.
"No problem at all." He smiled. "I'll be at my desk whenever you're free." He nodded and moved through the office once Wes had closed the door on him. God, what was he doing. He moved to his desk, sat down and moved papers around. Who was he kidding, he wouldn't be doing any work until after he'd spoken to Wesley.

Wes didn't speak as Melissa explained her foundation. He understood what it was like to lose someone in a tragic, life changing event like that. He found it a little odd that a radical anti... environmentalist? was attacking people from a charity that to him sounded like it had nothing to do with environmentalism at all, but maybe that was just him.
Anyway, her charity really had nothing to do with her work here. So he focused on what she was saying about the legal system instead. "That's always our goal. And usually, we do." Wes couldn't think of anyone in recent years that had had their conviction overturned; de Talone for instance sure wasn't innocent.
But on to her promotion, the real reason she was here today. "I've drawn something up for you, Melissa, that I think you might be interested in." He picked up a sheet of parchment off his desk, similar to what he had given Roxanne, and glanced at it for a moment before he passed it across the desk to her.

Melissa gasped in surprise. For the first time she was totally speechless. She was being offered the position of the person in charge of the unit. She hadn't expected that. Definitely not that. She looked down at the parchment Mr. Ferguson had handed to her and began reading.
No it was right there on the parchment. The name of the position. She looked back up at he Department Head. "I...I don't know what to say except that I accept the position. Thank you, Mr. Ferguson. I promise that I won't disappoint you or make you regret for promoting me."
As for the salary, Melissa didn't care about it. Money couldn't buy happiness, she had learned that the hard way. What she wanted was getting the opportunity to do what she always loved. Being out in the field and she was now being offered to do that.

She seemed shocked at first, and Wes was unsure of whether or not that was a good reaction. Gasping and everything. He tapped his fingers on his armrest and waited for her to say something, or to accept...
And accept she did. That was good then! He had needed someone in that position for a long time. "Excellent, Melissa, you can start today." Wes offered her a smile. He was certain he wouldn't be disappointed in her, she knew her stuff.
"Well, I'm going to go ahead and bump up your pay anyway, even it may be no concern for you. No matter. I'll put you on Paygrade D, so that's an increase of ten percent for you." He nodded and made note of it, then stood up to show Melissa to the door. He needed to speak to Jax now, and after him... Emily, Simon, Saul, Aron, and probably others.
It was going to be a big day. "I should also tell you," Wes mentioned as an aside, as they neared the door, "that I'm not going to wait years to promote people from now on. I'll give them out as I see fit, so if you do a good job in this new role, you might find yourself in an even better position soon." He gave her a clap on the shoulder and then opened the door to show her out.

Saul had come in, set up/cleared his desk, and got some coffee from the pot that Roxanne brought in. He was iffy of that coffee at first, the woman had become more shifty as she campaigned for the BoG position. He wanted to be sure that the coffee has some sort of potion in it that forced him to vote for her. It seemed safe though, so he took a sip and stepped up to Wes' door. He gave it three quick knocks and stepped back. It sounded like he was just finishing up a conversation with Melissa, he'd wait for the Bossman to open the door from here.

Melissa nodded and quickly got up from her seat and followed him to the door. She was surprised when he clapped her on the shoulder. Was that a reassuring tap or one of those okay it's time for you to get out of my office ones. Melissa thought to herself. Either way, she knew that she had work to do and that others were waiting to speak with him.
"Thank you for taking the time to see me Mr. Ferguson. I really appreciate it. " Melissa thanked him before walking out the door to start her new post.

Wes opened the door just a fraction of a second after Saul had knocked on it, which resulted in his being somewhat surprised to see the younger man there. He gave the guy a bit of a smile and turned back to Melissa. "Thank YOU for your continued hard work." He nodded as she left and then addressed the employee left standing there.
"Good to see you, Saul, anything I can help ya with today?" His eyes were twinkling but he didn't invite the Animagus Registrar job person in yet. He had to get Jax first. So before Saul said anything, Wes added, "You wouldn't mind doing me a favor, would you? Could you go get Tanner for me?"
Heheh. Making him do the fetching. Wes waited to see if he would.

I DO? I guess I do. Saul is on the job! #PatientMoose
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
The door open and out stepped Melissa. He gave the women a quick nod then turned his attention to the Gruff Bossman. He gave him a smile, and a nod and spoke up. "I just wanted to speak with you about..." Huh what, go get Tanner, why? Saul was here now, he wanted his payraise! Ugh fine, He'll get Tanner and let the guy no doubt take HIS turn. "I'm on the job." It wasn't really a job, but it gave him something to do. Removing his glasses from his face he pocketed them in his jacket.
...What was it that Tanner did again? This wasn't going to take too long find him was it?

A little over fifteen minutes later, Jaxton strode through the office back to Wesley's office. His heart once again hammering harshly against his rib cage. Why was this so difficult? He was going to talk to one of his best friends... one of the men who was going to stand next to him within the next few months as he pledged his love to his Ali... a man who he'd stood next to in return.
Grow up, Axe!
Urgh. He sighed, shook himself slightly and then raised his hand to rap-a-tap-tap on the bossman's door. "Hi, Wes." He said, before he turned the handle and pushed on the door slowly. "Saul found me... eventually." He grinned slightly, letting Wesley know that he'd had a little bit of fun before admitting that he was Tanner. Whoops?

Oh what was this now? Saul wanted to speak to him about something? "All in good time, Primeaux, in good time." Wes steered him out of his office on the pretense of having the man find Jaxton, then closed his door and retreated to his desk.
Ah. He had hardly settled in and might have closed his eyes for a few winks before Jax showed up again. "Ehhhhhh Tanner! Come on in," he called out in a chuckle, sitting upright and beckoning Jax to his desk. "Heh. He needed the challenge. Saul takes work things too seriously sometimes." Better than taking everything for a joke though, he supposed.
Anyway. Wes waited for Jax to sit before he turned down his grin. "So what did you want to speak to me about?"

Jaxton couldn't help the grin that spread over his lips as one of his best friends continued to call him Tanner... though, he guessed it was simply to do with work, respect and credit - which he both liked and respected in return. "Good afternoon, Mr Ferguson." He said, winking playfully as he closed the office door behind him. Yes, it would shock many - but he did, genuinely have a sense of humour... it was simply reserved for those who were special. Like Wesley.
"Well, he certainly had that - but I was probably too mean... But it did make me realise that the staff don't know everyone in our department. Crazy." That was just not something that was heard of in his Division. Nope, his 'kids' knew who everyone was so they could spot an imposter... or they should have been able too... He still had to test that theory.
Finally, falling comfortably into the chair opposite Wes' desk, Jaxton realised that it was time for being serious. "Well... I." He paused and sighed. "God, it shouldn't be so hard to talk to you, Wes." He took another deep breath, looked up at Wesley and spat it out. "I want to step down as Head Auror and possibly leave for an extended Paternity leave period."

Mr. Ferguson? HAH. "Mister Ferguson is my father," Wes laughed, though there was considerably less mirth in this laugh than his chuckle from earlier. His relationship with his father was an entirely different matter, one he didn't want to get into today. So he shook his head and resumed the work conversation.
"We should probably work on that, eh. Communication and teamwork and all that." Wes waved a hand. He'd put that in the back of his mind. Jaxton was suddenly getting serious, and Wes wasn't sure what he was expecting to come out of his friend's mouth.
....
"You want to step down?" the dark-haired man echoed in surprise. Clearly he hadn't been expecting THAT. "Why?" Well a paternity leave period was a clue, but... just... Wes shook his head as though he needed to clear out his ears and repeated his question. "WHY?"

(Guh, sorry - computer froze last night and I lost my post. Took it as my computers way of telling me to sleep. <3).
Jaxton understood that. There was something annoying about being called "Mr Tanner", though while he was at work he didn't mind it as much - though it still made him check over his shoulder and check that his Father and Uncle weren't standing behind him. He should check for his brother - but Brandon was younger than he was - so it never crossed his mind.
"Yeah, I think it's a weak point across the whole Ministry - but since we specialise in... well, what we do - perhaps the team needs to be more familiar with each other on a whole." He smiled at Wes. "In fact, I had a task I wanted to run past you as well... but I'll ask later." He said, meaning in about five minutes once the shock wore off.
"Well, things are crazy." He paused and sighed, rubbing the palms of his hands over his eyes. "I need to be there for Ky right now, she's readjusting to not being... well, you know from Iz." He said, with an empathetic smile. "And Ed is going through more exams right now, and I'd like to help give him as much experience as possible. I have a wedding to re-arrange yet again, and Alicia is due any day now."
He sighed, "I need time with my family and I haven't seen my Parents in months." His Mother would have some harsh words for him when he finally went to go see them in Florida... better to step down before then so Wesley had a Head Auror around. "My Mother will likely give me a telling off." He rolled his eyes, she was one of two women in his life who he would suffer great illnesses and pain for, so he could sit through a lecture.
Tori - I'm going to be away for the next few days just so you know.

"We do need to act more as a team and less as a bunch of divisions working on their own," Wes agreed. It sounded like Jax had an idea to solve that, and he was intrigued to hear it, but first things first...
He was losing his Head Auror.
Wes could tell that his friend was stressed. It was showing, in his face and in the slump of his shoulders, and probably in other ways too. It would be selfish of him to not allow him time off... not that Wes could really say no to Jax, but... this was still going to be tricky. The Department really couldn't afford to allow people to go just on vacation when so much still needed to be done.
"Okay," he said with a sigh, when the Auror had finished speaking. "Take all the time you need. But you realize I can't just leave your position open while we have a time thief hanging out in the holding cells and three new YATI to train..." Wes trailed off with a frown.

Jaxton sighed and brought his hand up to rub his face, and then dropped it back into his lap. "Well, I'm more than happy to continue being the Head until you find someone to take my place... I'll even help to train them up if they need the training - but I can't do this job for too much longer, I can't loose everyone now that I've got them." By everyone he meant his children and his very very soon to be wife Ali.
"I don't want to leave the department though, I just would like to be a normal Auror." He laughed. It had been a while since he'd been one of them, but he was looking forward to it. "Though, I'm more than happy to help Emily with the YATI's, I've always tried to get the other Auror's to help the YATI's out any way..."
He sighed and smiled, a soft slow smile at his best friend. "You know I wouldn't hand in my resignation if it wasn't important."
