Auror Field Experience

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...psea7d5231.jpg

The instant you touch the portkey, you are swept away and deposited on a narrow mountain trail, secluded somewhere in Northern Scotland. A light wind whips around the boulders peeking through the pinewoods and thick, bushy grey-green undergrowth. The path is full of red needles and rich soil, which pads and quiets your footsteps as you stand to collect yourself. Take a moment to adjust to the sights and sounds of the forest; every now and then you hear a bird calling out to another, or spot a red squirrel leaping overhead. If you listen hard enough, you can even hear the far off sound of water crashing over the edge of small mountain. For all that your senses can tell you, the forest is quiet, peaceful, and utterly isolated.

Hope you brought warm clothing. The trail is long and the forest is a friend to no one in the middle of the night.

Landing with a thud, Emily let go of whoever's hand she was holding and righted herself in a swift motion, pocketing the letter opener. With a flick of her wrist, her wand shot into her hand, and she used the other to wipe the red needles from her legs.

After a quick evaluation of their surroundings, Emily, eyebrows raised, returned her glance to the group. "Gather yourselves, we've got some hiking to do first," she instructed, motioning with her head the way they would be going, up the path on an incline.

Fira 07-04-2013 09:52 AM

Once they were landed, Josh had a good look around running a hand though his dark brown hair. Forest...this was a forest. Despite all the things that made his mind busy, a small smile was formed on the young man's lips. He had been dealing with forests since he was a little boy. Forests were where he felt like at home. He had to admit that this made him relax quite a lot though he was still not sure if he was going to be able to focus on the task.

If only he could blurt it out.

When she spoke, he looked towards Emily and approached her. Hiking...that was no problem to him. Where did the people think he got his muscular form? Yes, he exercised but it was mostly being at outdoors the farm he was living in being at the edge of a forest like this. Okay...forest...comfortable. Maybe if he could share...the issue...he could be more comfortable and actually be able to focus on this task properly. Everyone gathering to get to hiking maybe no right instant to do that yet he could not just...keep it in.

He walked closer to their leader and leaned in towards her a bit. ''Emily?''

Hera 07-04-2013 10:05 AM

She was waiting for the lot of them to get their act together and proceed, planning on taking up the rear. In the meantime, she did admire their surroundings. She rather liked forests. Good for hiding and the like. Emily acknowledged Carter as he approached her, and pursed her lips thoughtfully as he addressed her.

"Yes?" she asked. Did he have a question now?

Fira 07-04-2013 10:28 AM

Blinking a bit, Josh stared at the head auror. The way she looked at him made him hesitate and reconsider if it was really a good time to mention what...he was going to mention. It absolutely was not, they were on the in the forest for field work but...there was a lot of buts to it. He had no idea how Emily would react to it yet Josh knew if he wanted to be able to focus on what they were going to today...he had to get it out of him. So he decided he would take the risk.

The young man stared down at the ground for a bit, took a deep breath then looked back at Emily. He did not know if the others were listening. He did not care. They could very well hear it and know it too.

''My girlfriend is pregnant.''

There....he said it. For a moment, it made him feel a bit uncomfortable. Evelyn was going to be angry but he could not very well keep it,

Hera 07-04-2013 10:54 AM

Emily was about to take a cautionary step back, because it looked as though Carter was going to barf. Did he get portkey-sickness?... she certainly hoped not. She didn't move though, instead she nodded silently, waiting for him to continue. And when he did...

Pregnant.

With child.

Pregnant.

Well that was, news, of the good variety...

"Congrats man," she offered with a grin, giving him a firm pat on the arm. Now, could they get on with it? It wasn't exactly the time or place for a party. "Best make sure you stay in one piece then."

Deezerz 07-05-2013 01:42 PM

Kennedy landed on both his feet and was thankful to Merlin for not letting him splat down on his face. Though, that has never happened, he once came close when he...yeah. Never again will he do that.

Portkey safe, kids. M'hm.

With a flick of his wrist his wand was in his hand. The YATI glanced around, taking in the forest. Could they go now? Was Joshua Carter sick or something? Kennedy fixed the collar of his jacket from under the strap of his bag as he waited. He was probably more excited about this than when his godfather announced he'd bought a sweet shop. But he was cool. Kennedy Escalante was cool...and waiting.

Holmesian Feline 07-05-2013 01:55 PM

Everyone...especially Josh.

SPOILER!!: Em and Josh

The great outdoors was what awaited them, yet that was kind of a given by the talk that had developed back in the security office. Simon paused where he landed on one knee for a moment to get himself settled and take in the exact surroundings. The forest quiet and beautiful at the moment but he knew that could easily change.

Standing up, he dusted off the needles that had gathered on his pant leg and adjusted his satchel slung over his neck and shoulder before heading back into the think of the group. It was just then that Josh had blurted out his news and he was taken aback. Not entirely by surprise, he had known both Josh and Evelyn for a long time and knew their relationship...just as the way it just came out.

"Congrats Josh," he said extending his congratulations with a friendly smile. Simon grasped his shoulder as he got closer, giving a friendly smile. All the more reason for him to have his best friend's back this time around.

Evelyn would kill if Josh was hurt bad and pregnant Ev was no doubt worse.

Hera 07-06-2013 01:25 AM

Blahblahblah. They were lagging.

If the boys wanted a D&M it would have to wait. Or else it may impact on their... ability to perform effectively. Which wouldn't bode well for them. Mental note. No soppy personal stuff during work hours.

In an effort to get them moving on, Emily took the lead, walking briskly up the path well ahead of the group. If they had half a brain, they'd catch up...

Holmesian Feline 07-06-2013 01:33 AM

Simon might have said something more but now was certainly not the time for out of office stuff. Plenty of time for that when they were commiserating whatever happened along the way in their training/team building experience. He let the hand slip from Josh's shoulder and followed the unspoken signal sent by Emily.

Time for them to move on.

And so he did, the auror walking forward from the original gathering space. "Let's go," he mused, the young man using a good pace to catch up with the head auror. Hopefully the rest would follow after them.

sweetpinkpixie 07-06-2013 01:56 AM

*le shifty*

Leading his team in proper position, the shiftily disguised Herbologist kept his Disillusionment Charm on as he watched the Aurors walk down the path. Heh, this was going to be easier than he had originally thought, considering the Head Auror was walking....

Never mind. Looked like the one bloke was afraid of being alone on the path and needed to stick to the side of a Miss Emily Browne.

Once everyone was in position - or he assumed they were in position given how long they had been in hiding now - the man raised his wand and cast a silent Stupefy towards the young man (Simon) and immediately left the spot he had been in. No counter spells cast in his direction.

Runing through the woods, he figured now was as good a time as ever and removed the Disillusionment Charm on himself. They had to see how awesome their disguises were after all!

Now to wait for the rest of his team to provide the proper distractions. Heh.

TeafortheSoul 07-06-2013 02:14 AM

*gets the giggles at a pregnant Evelyn and then gets serious'd and shifty* AHEM

IT WAS A NINJA! Or y'know, a pack of them. However you wanted to look at it but this Ninja here was kitted out. Awesome Tabi boots and awesome reinforced gloves too. As soon as he got the signal from their "evil" leader, Ninja #1 blew a handful of Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder at the one called Kennedy, engulfing the young man in darkness, that could not be broken by a simple lumos.

How'd you like them apples, YATI kid?

Holmesian Feline 07-06-2013 02:39 AM

We see...smudges

Though he got close, Simon stayed back off Emily's shoulder on the trail, knowing well enough not to crowd her out. They didn't need to bunch up as one just stay relatively together. Suddenly something caught his eye out of the corner of his vision as he kept alert and Simon turned to see a ray of scarlet head on. His training causing his wand arm to move with it just in time to raise a shield against the assault. However it had been so narrow an escape that he felt the full force of the stunner against his barrier bringing him up short.

So much for meerly hiking in the woods at the moment.

"Protego..." he cast quietly once more, strengthening his shield to recover, his gaze flitting around much like when he played beater looking out for the bludgers. It was then black smudges, signaling more movement, were seen. Simon tried to follow the players, his wand raised but not quick to shoot as he debated his next action while on guard. Too random a shot could backfire.

Cassirin 07-06-2013 03:35 AM

Vivi landed lightly (no really... she'd been practicing), and she straightened out her puffy coat before hurrying after Emily and the other older Aurors. She didn't want to be last, since that was generally the one to get eaten by the chimaera in old stories, but she didn't want to be too chummy with Emily in front of Aspen. Aspen was not impressed by such things.

It would be easier if Legend was there, because no one objected with being chummy with HIM. Plus he was bigger than her and would be an excellent body to hide behind in a fire fight.

Speaking of which... Vivi watched as Simon fended off a spell, and some sort of man-in-black blew powder stuff at Kennedy and and and... "Um, Em? This forest has a ninja infestation. Permission to fumigate?"

Hera 07-06-2013 04:32 AM

The jet of red light took her by surprise, though she couldn't help but smirk. And so the games begin...

Ducking it in the nick of time, she proceeded to throw up her shield, checking on the outcome of the ninja attack. Simon prevailed. Lucky for him.
It was about time to see what this lot was capable of, so when she heard Genevieve's call, Emily couldn't help but laugh... on the inside... not on the outside.
"Get on it," she called back, wasting time asking questions wasn't the best idea. By all means, they didn't need to wait for her signal on this one. There was plenty of time for redemption, though, so all was not lost.

Emily made a show of sending off jets of red in the offenders directions.

Deezerz 07-06-2013 04:58 AM

First, he saw the jet of red light from the corner of his eye. Kennedy was ready. He turned toward it, but it was headed for Simon. N'aww. Welp. He'd get his chance, he thought.

Just like that, he did.

All of the sudden he was engulfed in darkness. His first reaction was his classical: Gaaah! He realized, though, in it wasn't just any kind of darkness. The lights hadn't just been turned off in the forest. Him and his partner in crime have used this kind of powder before. On holidays, on Peyton, on Rosie and Cornelius. Unsuspected victims, you know. But this was different. He was expected to act. To move efficiently and not freak out. 'Cause he wasn't freaking out. Nope.

He gripped his wand, the seconds felt like hours. Lumos wouldn't work. He got that. So he went with Plan B. "Tergeo!" That should suck all that powder up.

Wait, did Genevieve say ninjas?

TeafortheSoul 07-06-2013 05:06 AM

For... Ern and Lara

This Ninja totally was in his element. War games were awesome no? Just him? He shot a smokescreen spell towards that hesitating little blonde, and followed that up with a couple of silent stinging hexes and a body bind, hidden by the smoke. You snooze you lose, bud.

He was already elsewhere and disillusioned once more.

And that dude, the one with the knocked up girlfriend, now had his shoelaces tied together.

Genevieve's weakness wasn't in spell-casting or reflexes. It was in always taking the quip. One of these days, she'd get hexed because she just had to stop to say something sassy before getting her spell off. As it was, she already had her wand up as Emily responded, and Genevieve pivoted on her heel to take in the forest around them.

Ninjas didn't belong in the forest. Forest ninjas were fair game. If Genevieve got a chance to jump one, she'd absolutely take it.

Before she even had a chance to react, she was surrounded by a thick cloud of smoke. It made it nearly impossible to take a step forward or backward for fear of tripping on an exposed root, but it also meant that she could no longer block incoming spells. Spells she was SURE would be coming. Genevieve did the only thing she could think to do under the circumstances. She dropped to her belly and rolled away from the smoke.

Holmesian Feline 07-06-2013 09:35 AM

Simon was both inwardly amused and informed by the comment heard coming from the YATI. A rational of the scene from the group behind him. Yes...Ninjas made sense, at least in describing the cover-up and swift movement. All just to keep them on their toes as the spells they sent went off.

Even though he hadn't been waiting for it, he took the head auror's words as cue and began his offense, sending of first one spell and then another. The young man doing his best to try and aim for the area slightly in front of the ninja smudges so they would perhaps run into them inadvertadly. Simon then opted to move few paces not in a straight line, not wanting to be a stationary target, sending off more spells within his arch of view at the offending directions, sure to keep them away from Emily the one person in front of him.

Lollipop! 07-06-2013 09:37 AM

‘How to Know You’ve Made a Mistake’ a book by Persephone Walters. Chapter One: you find yourself dressed in a ninja costume in the middle of a forest attacking aurors. The ninja darted behind a tree, much more uncomfortable being in the line of spells than her fellow BAMFs, it seemed. The rather talented dude sending spells at her employees needed to be taken DOWN.

...Or up.

Yes, you were after getting an anti-gravity charm sent your way. HA.

TeafortheSoul 07-06-2013 11:47 AM

ooc: go ahead and pick one of these things to happen to your charrie. Feel free to have them escape quickly or not, but its no fun if they magically(lol) manage to avoid everything right? Especially since its a surprise attack:loved: Of course you can choose not to play at all.... up to you of course.

Given the smokescreen and the darkness and the anti-gravity mist in the mix playing havoc with the environment, it was the perfect opportunity to throw up some more unexpected obstacles. This ninja had all that on lock, working with his ninja team and all that.

Starting with a whoooole lot of gnarled and damp tree roots bursting out of the ground and grabbing at auror and YATI ankles and any other body parts that were close to the ground. The tree roots were damp enough that any fire wouldn't take hold, so whoever got caught up in those would have to use their brains and try another method to get free.

While those were popping up, the ninja easily flicked out a couple silent Obliviate spells, not too strong mind you, just enough to make anyone hit by them temporarily forget everything that had happened since they'd got out of bed this morning.

That'd be a nasty way to 'wake up.'

sweetpinkpixie 07-06-2013 12:09 PM

He was feeling like he was back to being a little boy again playing cops and robbers in his backyard. So it was a good thing that his awesome disguise was covering his face or else the young aurors would have seen him grinning like an idiot.

Disillusioned once again, he made his way towards the Head Auror, avoiding the random spells being thrown every which direction with a few tumbles and dives. Once he was relatively close to her, he sent a silent Petrificus Totalus her direction and then all of his now visible 6'1" muscular build snatched her up in his arms. He pivoted slighting before

*POP*

He was gone, along with the Head Auror.
Oh, and to his employees here doing a awesome job being super shifty ninjas? Yeah, they should all expect small bumps in their salaries this month. Yep yep!

OOC: Hera can post a reaction to being kidnapped if she wants. Otherwise assume she is goooooooooooooooone :3

Hera 07-06-2013 02:06 PM

BYYYYEEEE! *poofs*

Emily had managed to side step and dive out of the path of most of the curses and spells that were exchanged, without much difficulty. Opting to move to the shelter of the trees to secure a better vantage point, Emily observed the lay of the field.. er, forest. From here she wouldn't have to worry about getting caught in the crossfire.

Her lot were holding their own for the most part which was pleasing to see, and she'd caught glimpses of movement and managed to focus on a few of the 'ninjas'. The one she had been tracking with her gaze had disappeared, and just as Emily raised her wand to disillusion herself, she felt a hard and cold sensation in her side, rendering her body stiff and solid.

Furthermore, she was taken into the arms of the assailant and.... POP!

Deezerz 07-06-2013 04:07 PM

Okay. It was still smokey and Kennedy did not like his sight being hindered. Come on! He was blind. Well...not really. He had his contacts in today (thank goodness he didn't opt his glasses instead), but still. The YATI breathed in. Not complaining, Escalante. No stupid excuses! His father's voice reverberated in his head.

Just as he was about to move - because he had a plan, Kennedy always has a plan - something wrapped around his ankle. It was so unexpected, so he didn't even think of pulling away, he just fell forward. Thanks to his fathers training, mid-fall Kennedy managed to land on his palms, like in a half crouch. He pushed himself up quickly and sent a severing charm at the root. Then he sprinted to a tree, lunged himself up, took hold of a branch, did a flip and landed on pretty thick branch in a crouch. He could see the commotion below.

Kennedy Escalante was not hiding. Oh no. He was itching to go back down, but he wanted to get a glimpse of what he was dealing with first and the BAM. Green eyes scanned the floor and--

"Stupefy!" He tried shooting at the invisible force that hoisted Emily and then POP! She was gone. "Great," he muttered. They lost their Head Auror.

Kennedy so declared war on these ninjas now. He studied the battle ground and noticed some shifty moves here and there. He wondered if those were the ninjas. He could tell apart his co-workers' heads. Genevieve was blonde, Simon and Joshua dark haired. Here goes nothing. He sent a spell at a "moving force". "Stupefy!" Eat red sparks, dude.

Holmesian Feline 07-06-2013 06:48 PM

Apparently his shield wasn't going to work for all the spells. For the anti-gravity jinx sent his way found its target, taking the auror up off the ground and away from the slinking roots. His grip on his wand had tightened instinctively so he kept possession as he found himself floating and off his feet. Keeping calm in the situation, Simon debated the best spell to counter it, finally casting a quiet finite and bracing for impact with the land beneath him.

He managed to half twist in the air, landing on his hands, stomach and side of his leg. Okay so lion not a cat. His thigh would likely feel that tomorrow. The auror looked up as he moved to get up to his knees only to see Emily disappear making their little adventure get a little more interesting. She hadn't done it on her own so someone had obviously done something and seeing as their was no one around her they had been under the cover of spells.

"Homenum revelio!" he cast, aiming in the area the head auror had been standing moments before. Simon himself continued the way up but only to a crouch, moving off the path and heading for some cover. Looking around to take stock of the rest of his team, he shot the revealing charm a couple more times in different directions, hoping to catch somebody hiding. Catching sight of another bought of movement through the trees, he shot an "Stupefy!" at the moving target, narrowly side-stepping a gripping root.

Lollipop! 07-07-2013 07:21 AM

Well, this was definitely her last (and first) kidnapping and she was very glad for her disguise when she accidentally fist-pumped in victory when her boss POP!ped away with their... victim? Why were they even doing this again? Some kinda beef with the MLE department? They didn't like aurors or something? That's cool, as long as Sephy was getting paid, she was happy.

Nodding at her fellow ninja she pushed off from the tree and focused. Apparating was never easy and not exactly her idea of fun. She usually splinched. Once she'd left a toe or two behind and kept bloody falling over with the balance. No way was that happening again. Not dressed like this. Ninjas just didn't fall over. It had to be against the rules.

She was spinning on the spot and had risen an inch when the red spell hit her, straight in her chest. She didn't even have a chance to widen her eyes. She just fell backwards onto the leaves, not even aware enough to be thankful that her ninja costume was protecting her hair from the moss.

That was the cue to get outta there, now that stuff had happened as they'd been told. So this Ninja went and scooped up that other one, the unconscious one, and apparated them both outta there with a pop.

..... hazard pay, right?

Catch you later, MLErs.

Deezerz 07-08-2013 02:17 AM

He heard a thud. Kennedy was one-hundred percent sure he heard something thud. They SO got one, right?

The YATI jumped down from the branch he was perched on, and went to stand next to Simon. "I think we got one." He wasn't sure who's spell had hit the ninja...or whatever they were. But they got one. That was some sort of victory, right? Or not really since they managed to lose their Head Auror. Damn it.

Still on guard and with his wand arm at the ready, Kennedy glanced around. Well as much as he could in the fogginess. "Everyone all right?" The team was still here? Anyone else kidnapped? Kennedy still had that sense to make sure everyone was okay. Three years of Prefect duty and one of Head Boy did that to a person.

Holmesian Feline 07-08-2013 02:44 AM

One moment Simon believed he saw something go down, the next it had seemingly gone quiet. The puffs disappearing in the familiar form of apparition. They were alone again...right? The auror slowly and cautiously straightened up to his full height, his gaze skimming around to take in the new scene amongst the fogginess. He looked back as someone approached spotting Kennedy as he spoke making his presence known from whereever he had gotten off to.

"I think so too. I'm okay...you?" he asked, returning the question to the YATI. Emily was gone, that much was sure, so they were without their leader. So for now they needed to regroup and decide what was next. "Josh...Genevieve...Aspen?" Simon called out to the rest of the team, looking around for sign of their presence. The young man thankfully remembering the new trainee's name so he didn't have to call out something randomly.

Cassirin 07-08-2013 04:28 AM

Genevieve carefully pushed herself back to her feet, rubbing dirt out of her puffy coat as she spun slowly in a half-circle. Wand out, looking for motion, trying not to hex Kennedy or Simon or anyone as she looked for another ninja. She saw the blur of movement out of the corner of her eye, a HUGE dark figure reaching for their Head Auror.

She leapt at Emily, wand out and incantation on her lips, when something reached out and grabbed her ankle. The stunning spell went wild, and Genevieve slammed into the ground face first without her arms free to break the fall. Something broke, though, and she ignored the pain in her face and the blood streaming from her nose as she cast a Severing Charm over her shoulder at the tree root around her ankle.

They were down a Head Auror. The ninjas had disappeared, taking their fallen comrade with them. And Genevieve's nose was broken. SUPER FUN CAMPING TRIP, GUYS. "Who is second in command? What's the protocol if we have no Head? Keep to the path and finish the hike? My vote is to keep going until we find a defensible campsite and then set up a magical perimeter. And quickly."

Deezerz 07-08-2013 04:37 AM

Kennedy nodded at Simon. "Yeah, I'm fine." He'd acted fast, that's what helped, though he had been taken by surprise. Kennedy was ready for more.

He glanced around and out of the fog came Genevieve. Kennedy squinted his eyes at her. Was that dirt or blood on her face? It was too bright to be dirt. "Do you need some help with that?" He's good at healing broken noses since he's given his best mate a few and had to repair it. Not that he did it on purpose. Everything goes in practice.

The YATI glanced down at the path. He didn't know about anyone else being in charge. As long as they got to wherever their goal was, then he had no problem. "I say we keep going, too," he said agreeing with Genevieve.

lazykitty 07-08-2013 05:33 AM

Tucked behind a rather huge tree that was the perfect distance from the path, a few plants flaming beside her, Roxanne watched as the 'ninjas' kidnapped Emily. She had to admire that one's spellwork, raising the roots like that. Quite impressive. Anyway, the ninjas had gone now, which meant it was her turn. She tossed some more Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder towards the remaining Aurors, enough that they wouldn't be able to see the roots now sticking out of the ground. That is, if it worked.

Holmesian Feline 07-08-2013 01:14 PM

Simon nodded as Kennedy answered to the positive, good news that at least two of them were uninjured. However as Genevieve approached through the cloudiness, it was clear she hadn't been so lucky. About to offer assistance, he deferred to the younger man. He beat him to it, switching instead to thinking on their next action as they awaited the other two to respond.

At Genevieve's question on leadership, he gave the only response he could think on. "Technically it would be whoever replaced Emily as YATIL but no one was appointed. So it would defer to Josh and I as senior aurors I believe." That news reminded him of being pulled of captain out of nowhere. Alright...he could do this.

As for whether to continue on or not, Simon had this feeling that what had happened wasn't random. Emily had mentioned this exercise was to find strengths and weaknesses so how better then to test them under the circumstances of attack and loosing leadership. "Then that's three votes for moving on. That's our best bet so once secure we work on what else we need," he replied looking between the two trainees.

"Wands stay out and shields up," he instructed even though he hoped it had been redundantly. That was what they needed to learn after all. " I'll take point and Josh with take the tail with the rest in between." Simon was about to start them moving when they were suddenly in darkness once more and he switched back to high alert even if he couldn't see anything.

So much for a break.

"Tergeo..." He cast, attempting to repeat some clearing of the area.

Eeeep missed all the fun. *pokes RL* Moving on...

With all the stressing events around him lately, Josh tended to easily get angry and having his shoelaces tied together during all the commotion did not help him with that. Every time he tried to move he found himself on the ground yet at least it luckily helped him avoid some of the rays of magic.

He did not like ninjas. Especially those who invaded forests. Yeah....forests were no place for ninjas. While he struggled to fight he tried to make sure the ninjas understood that, that he did not like them in this forest, but it was all a mess then Emily was kidnapped.

Once everything was all calmed down again. He tried to take a step towards the YATI whose nose was broken, he tripped over his shoelaces again and fell over. A loud curse escaped his mouth at the very moment. With an angry face, he sat up and took off his shoes and stood up. Yeah...he was going to do it with his bare feet and he did not care about it.

''They circle us. We should be circling them and there are enough of us. Apparently they rely only on magic. We should surprise them with something else.''

Bleh. Weekends. =/ *catches up...*

The thing about teamwork.... is that if you're not part of the team, you're easily forgotten. Or, that was what Aspen had been hoping for - to be forgotten, stay behind the main group, observe her fellow Aurors.

And when the group moved forward, she went backwards. So when .... ninjas... attacked, she wasn't part of the group.

So, it was an amusing and confusing few moments watching the melee, the parts she could see anyway through the flashes of red. And it seemed like she was going to get away without joining the scuffle, too - just by simply not moving. In fact, before the NINJAs disappeared, Aspen even managed to cast a silent, fairly well-aimed-in-the-dark TRACKING CHARM at those last-to-abort ninjas. It was this that got Aspen though, for as she stayed perfectly still, the roots and limbs were busy at work. Her ankles were completely engulfed before she even felt them around her thick boots...

...and then around her thighs, then quick around her hips... Aspen's panic was creeping nearly as fast as the vines. So, as she let her shield down to attack the vines, a stray obliviate hit home --

....

....

.....????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????

All chaos broke loose once more. More darkness powder, people taking off their shoes, all that training junk. Though, Kennedy had expected training differently. Sort of the kind his father put him through when he was younger. The kind that got you sweating the first five minutes and dragging yourself across the ground. That sort of thing.

This...this was new. New was...exciting. He heard Simon's incantation and decided to tryout his other senses instead of relying only on sight. Since sight was pretty much a fail right now. As he concentrated, Kennedy heard some rustling. If that was from his co-workers or more ninjas he wasn't sure.

He heard Joshua. Hmmm. "They've got the element of surprise and obviously know the grounds better than us. We should concentrate on where they come from." Like listening. Listening was good. Besides, they weren't being shot at with spells, yet, so they could take this as their chance to channel where more company was. "Then attack." Attacking was good too. But that was his opinion. He turned to Simon.

Whatcha think, buddy?

For a brief moment, he turned around away from Simon and Genevieve. Just like that Kennedy got lost in the fogginess and his foot tripped over an uprooted root, and bumped into something (Aspen). At first he thought it was just a tree. A small tree. Then...it wasn't a tree. He squinted his eyes, then they widened in surprised.

"Aspen?" She was drowned in vines and...stuff. He would have compliment on what a great tree costume she was wearing had it been close to Halloween or if this wasn't a training exercise.

Kennedy poked her with his wand. Aspen looked kind of...clueless? Confused? "You okay? Come on, ninjas are out to get us." He cast a severing charm, concentrating enough to just cut the vines and roots. No need to cut the newbie on the first day.

Plus, he wouldn't dare harm this Odessa. He might end up getting headbutted by a Slytherin.

lazykitty 07-09-2013 09:01 AM

Awesome. The darkness powder had had it's intended effect, clearly, since there were now two Aurors down. But, uh-oh what was it Kennedy was saying? He wanted to see where the attacks were coming from? Oops. Good Auror instincts, yes, but totally bad timing for her. Roxanne cast a silent silencing spell at her shoes and crept along (hidden behind bushes and ferns and other underbrush) to the next tree over, leaving the bushes she'd brought with her behind the previous tree. The tree she was behind now was hidden from the view of the other tree, but still within casting distance, thank goodness.

She cast another silent spell, this one a simple Wingardium Leviosia, and floated the fire seed bushes towards Simon and Genevieve, setting them down a few inches away. Hope you paid attention in Herbology, you two!

Fira 07-09-2013 02:34 PM

Where they come from...

Where the attacks came from...

That was some good resolution the YATI had brought up. The problem was how...how they could spot where the attacks came from. They seemed to be running on the team everywhere. Josh's dark eyes, as much as he could see from all the annoying fog, swept the area around them. As he did so, he tried not to see the ones that were in trouble. None of it were fatal or highly harmful and helping others distracted them so it made it harder to spot where the ninjas attacked from.

Of course it did not mean that he thought they should not help their fellow Aurors. Quite the opposite, the pain of guilt upon seeing the Odessa girl trapped like that and not helping hit his heart yet he had to focus on the task ahead if he wanted to be useful for the team. To his relief the YATI was off to help the girl so he focused his attention on somewhere else. His brown eyes spotter a rather large tree and at the same time, he thought he saw some...stuff...flying towards where Simon was. What they were he had no idea but it could not be good with whatever had happened so far.

''Simon! Be careful!'' he yelled before putting his wand between his teeth not really knowing for what he had warned his friend and fellow Auror for. The next moment, he jumped at the large tree with all his strength and grabbed a far branch. He pulled his body up and hugged the branch, trying to climb the thing. His bare feet hurt against the hard trunk of the tree yet he managed to climb onto the large thing. Then...he took his wand back in his palm and stared down to see the source of the threat. He watched like a sentry in command.

Mad Eye Touz 07-09-2013 07:50 PM

.........?????

So..... Hm. Hmm. Aspen remembered waking up. She remembered jotting an irritatingly formal and cryptic note to Joao. She remembered reading the comics from the paper over breakfast. She remembered pickpocketing Legend Chosen's sandwich before heading down to the Atrium......

.... but....? Beyond that.......?

She recognized Kennedy, and though she was clearly having some MAJOR trust issues at the moment, she let him cut her free. Then she thought seriously about stunning him and running away to figure out why it was dark, cold, and like.. floating fire or something. Naturally, Aspen Odessa didn't answer Kennedy's question. She wasn't REALLY alright, not really, but he didn't need to know that. So he got a nod. Sure. She was fine. Nod.

"...when you say ninjas...." What? You know, like, what? Was that literal? And why was there a man in a tree? Simon? Oh good Merlin, what?

Holmesian Feline 07-09-2013 09:09 PM

Catching up

The spell had made some difference but it was still foggy around them all making ita challenge to see anything clearly. Simon did his best anyway focusing on his , finally spotting his best friend as he spoke and made his way over to the group. The familiar voice identifying him more then sight. His barefooted friend. Yeah... Simon wasn't even going to ask about that. He nodded at Josh's suggestion about circling their enemy to try and surprise them like they had surprised the. A plausible option, they just needed to get a better idea of where said enemy was.

If they were even all still around. The powder could have been set as a trap after the rest left after all. Everything had to be considered. "If only we had a better idea of just how many there actually were," he mused quietly. That would be a help but they would have to do without.

Kennedy's idea was good as well. "Yes...spells or anything else have to originate from some point."

Josh's words alerted him to a shadow as it moved closer to him and it was no person but an item. He turned his wand, ready to shield it but it stopped a few inches away from him. Strange...had his shield worked this time around? However the sudden heat was an answer to the negative and Simon quickly stepped back, across a uprooted root and tripping backwards. When he could focus on the object having stopped moving, he identified what he thought he remembered from descriptions of the Triwizard Tourniment.

A fire seed bush...two if the shape by Genevieve was another one.

Now he just had to remember how to deal with them.

"Glacius..." Simon finally cast the freezing spell at the bush. Ice had to deal with fire...right?

Cassirin 07-10-2013 02:27 AM

"Yeah. Thanks," Genevieve tipped her head up in Kennedy's direction to let him fix her nose, although she kept her wand out and her eyes were constantly tracking over his shoulder. It really wasn't very safe... nor realistic. Go be out here without back-up and without any idea of who was against them or their mission... was that was Auroring was going to be like?

It went dark again, and Genevieve swore like an Auror. Well, she was an Auror, so that was fitting. Oh, hmm... maybe they wouldn't be able to tell who... except there weren't many girls in this group and Aspen was the quiet and deadly type. Maybe it wasn't the safest of ideas, but Genevieve went still and tried to sense what was happening around her. Kennedy in front of her, Aspen behind him, Simon and Josh behind Genevieve...

So who was moving in the woods?

She didn't have enough time to bring that thought to fruition before the darkness was lifted. Genevieve stepped over the protruding roots, only to find herself face to face with a fire seed bush. Hello, there, stranger... this isn't your home. How was it that she was supposed to deal with fire seeds? Water? Push it into the snow drift?

Oh, wait! "Glacius," she jabbed her wand into the thick of the bush and watched the branches ice over. Something smelled sorta... smoky. Was Simon on fire? Oh. Nope. Puffy coat was on fire. Genevieve helpfully fell backwards into the snow bank and lay prone in the slushy mess.

And what was this? Aspen...? She stared up at her friend, making upside-down faces at her. "S'okay, Asp. We're playing a game is all."

Deezerz 07-11-2013 03:33 AM

Distractions. Everywhere. Kennedy was, indeed, a person who got distracted very easily. Sounds, smell, the thought of his girlfriend. Though, this was NOT the time for the latter because...spells, shouting, smoke, shoe-less co-workers and oh so many things. He cleared his head and returned Aspen's nod.

"Black suits. Shiftiness. Fancy moves. All that fun ninja stuff." Though it was getting on his nerves, the not being able to see properly. The YATI gave Aspen a What kind of ninjas did you think? look. Right at that moment something coiled around his ankle. Kennedy almost let out a GAAAH! but you know, he was a YATI.

He stumbled backward, but managed to aim his wand at the vine around his foot and send a severing charm at it. Mess with him.

Then Genevieve was on the ground making faces. Hello, there.

"Guys," he said to his co-workers. "I think we should keep moving. The more we stall the more...attacked we get." Move it, yes?

Kennedy didn't like being the sitting duck. He. Hated. Ducks.

Human. Tree. Human up a tree. One long, thin tentacle followed the human up the tree, snaking along the trunk. Once it caught up to said human, the tentacle wrapped itself around the person's ankle gently, as if testing his awareness.

If plants could grin, this one would be wearing a huge, Cheshire cat style smile.

Mad Eye Touz 07-11-2013 04:33 PM

.....right.

Fancy moves?

Aspen was pretty sure you didn't SEE ninjas, so her guesses were that... Merlin, who even knew? She didn't actually know where she was or how she got here, so who was she to judge the quality of so-called "Ninjas" described by Kennedy.

A game, Vi said. A game. Well, she certainly seemed relaxed enough... "A game in which Aurors get eaten by venomous plants?"
she made a vague movement towards Man-In-The-Tree.

If that was the game, then cool. She'd even relax. She'd never actually seen a man get eaten before. She should probably take notes.

Or move on, like Kennedy said..... is there a goal here?" One that she should remember but was totally like in the literal and philosophical dark.

Fira 07-11-2013 11:06 PM

Everyone and the venomous plant of course :D

From his point on the thick branch, Josh looked around carefully balancing himself by holding on the trunk with one hand while his wand was in the other. Narrowing his eyes a bit, he monitored everything his eyes could see but it looked like as if there was nothing. He let out a sigh of frustration. He grew up wandering in the forests and had been thought many things like tracking in a forest, plants, animals. He was supposed to see if there was anything out of ordinary in the forest but no. He could not see any ninjas or other sings that had anything to do with them. This was a disappointment for him.

For a moment, he looked down at the others to see what they were doing. Hopefully he could very well hear what they were saying and the thing the Kennedy lad said about going on seemed reasonable for him. Seemingly no one was around anyway. Probably they waited for the team to advance further into the forest. For the last time, he decided, to make sure that he could see nothing, the young man observed the whereabouts again as much as he could see from the spot. ''Can't see anything, people. I think it is a good idea to keep going'' Time to jump off this tree then...

But...

His bare feet already a tiny bit hurt from pressing all his body weight on the hard branch but what now he was feeling around his ankle was something completely different. It was moving. Quickly, he looked down only to see a plant trying to hug his leg. No...probably not. It surely was not expression his love to him. Leaning down a bit, he pointed his wand at the tentacle and whispered the severing charm. ''You should look for something else to satisfy your appetite, my green and slimy friend.''

Holmesian Feline 07-12-2013 02:40 AM

As the plant in front of him froze due to the effects of his spell, Simon got his way back up to his feet. Back in a better position to see Genevieve or at least hear her own spell, the auror could tell her own attacker had been neutralized as well. Nice to see whoever was attacking them was not just using magic as Josh had said but using foliage as well. He couldn't help but be reminded of the role of plants in the whole zombie escapade but there were more important things to dwell on.
Like them moving on.

"Right..." Simon said agreeing with Kennedy. "No matter the way we move, its better to be a moving target than a steady one." Made sense...right everyone? He couldn't help furrowing his brow slightly at what Aspen was saying, however at the mention of dangerous plants and the vague motion to the tree, he followed his gaze to see something near Josh.

"Your turn to look out Josh" he remarked, echoing his friend's earlier statement. Seeing the spell cast, he hoped it was enough, not aiming his own spell unless necessary because they needn't anger the plant more then it would likely be already. Not to mention he risked hitting the other auror with his vision cut down that far away.

"I think that would be more clue its time to move on."

Thats right people...one step and then another would be the way to go.

Ouch! Human-In-Tree was mean. Very, very mean. Alas, the plant was forced to let go, as it's poor tentacle was suddenly and painfully severed. But that didn't stop the plant from using one of it's other tentacles to reach up and take a nice WHACK! at Human-In-Tree before slithering it's way over to the group of humans on the ground to search for some other unsuspecting person to snag.

Mad Eye Touz 07-17-2013 07:00 PM

*wants to revive this*

As confused as Aspen obviously was, she was first to step forward and onward. That whole who is in charge now nonsense need not apply, she hadn't heard it and wouldn't have heeded it anyway. She gave Vi a nudge with her boot on the way.

...and also a wave to the Venomous Tentacula. She wouldn't have minded one of those as a "pet" ... but maybe another day. Bye for now!

So she proceeded onward, quiet, utterly confused, but with her wand ready. Concealed, but ready. It was bewildering that she was the ONLY one that was seemingly lost. And furthermore.... ninjas? "They can't have been very good ninjas if you saw them." Just saying.

Cassirin 07-18-2013 03:07 AM

"That's the point, yeah. Other people get eaten, but you and I will live to laugh about it over very very warm drinks later," Genevieve struggled off the ground and moved behind Aspen to propel the girl forward.

Because now, instead of ninjas, they had to deal with dangerous plants. Which wasn't what Genevieve signed up for. She had her wand out, looking for signs of that plant or ninjas or pirates or zombies or hipsters or anything. She was ready.

"Yeah, Asp, that's the thing. They were rubbish ninjas. Totally took me out of the game," she muttered quietly, sending a blaster into the underbrush where something may have just moved. Possibly.

Holmesian Feline 07-18-2013 03:23 AM

And away we go

So Josh was free and the green menace moved away from him...closer to the group on the ground.

Okay not so good.

Simon knew enough to keep an eye out for the plant's action as well as any other person's against them. It could be considered another adversary to be dealt with with a quick spell if need be even if he had been taught to respect plants. But then again that only worked with said plants that didn't try to eat you or other people you felt responsible for.

Which reminded him...they were getting a move on.

"Josh...I think you can come down," he mused, hoping his friend would agree to. Now wasn't a time to hide up on trees...not when the dangers still could reach there. Simon then turned back to the other three taking charge of the situation. Someone had to given they were short one leader who they might just have to find out about later on. When they were someplace they could hold up with protective enchantments of their own.

"Come on you three," the auror instructed, waving them on to move along with him.

Kimothy 07-20-2013 09:37 AM

Oh we're here too :P :3

Yes, it was their time.

Lourdes arrived at the place for those YATI people in level 2. She was also leading her group of ninjas. Weren't they awesome? Although, yes, wearing the ninja suit was weird and obviously didn't look good on her. She'll just pretend that it was her Quidditch robes so that it would feel better... sort of. But this should be an interesting experience.

The department head summoned her employees and flew near the trees with that new broom she bought in Diagon Alley, the Locketbreaker. Well, it was fast. Really fast. Alright... were they ready now or something? Because Lourdes was. Okay.

She flew over the YATI people and threw a water balloon straight at that dude acting as their leader's face (Simon). The leader of the next group of ninjas versus the leader of the YATI. And then before they could do anything, Lourdes had flew away. Nope... there was no hitting her. It was like bludgers on a match and she's had a lot of experience with that.

Her ninja team would follow in a bit. Make sure you're READY, people.

Aspen hadn't yet decided if having Vi's sense of humor with her during this very, very confusing hour was good or bad, comforting or annoying. Probably both, as Vi tended to always be. Vi was her own Yin and Yang. Aspen was with her though.

She was having a hard time with the idea of following this Simon dude though. Aspen didn't know him. She didn't care what rank or title he carried, she didn't know him, therefore she didn't trust him.

...and just as she was battling Vi to NOT actually go Simon's way, a water balloon came out of nowhere. She didn't at all try to help, but her own shield went up over head.

"Tut, tut," you know. Looks like rain.

At least YATI training was interesting. Odd flying ninjas, memory loss, exercises of trust. It made her hungry.

Holmesian Feline 07-23-2013 03:15 AM

Simon was glad he had kept some level of shield up as he moved, the water balloon giving him no avenue of escape otherwise as it sailed right at him at full speed, its thrower not far behind. The auror reacted to his attacker's quick movements as the balloon burst against it and only managing to get the top of his head wet. He'd take that over the full drenched look even if he could afford to spend the time drying himself off rather than retaliating.

"Immobulus!" he cast sending the freezing charm after the broom-riding form as he turned to follow its movements as they flew past. Simon was semi-doubtful of his chances hitting however, the flyer zooming past and back away.

"Protego Totalum" the twenty-something added, casting it around the area the group currently resided upon. Seeing as it appeared not much moving away was taking place, they might as well lay protected on site. At least for the moment until he got them moving for safer ground...if that existed at the moment.

Now to see what came next...the auror's wand still at the ready.

emjay 07-29-2013 06:55 PM

Flying fast on her Moontrimmer, Ninja!Mariel followed at a bit of a distance behind her Department Head on her own broom. She felt a bit odd in her ninja costume, but was told it was part of the deal.. besides, she wouldn't get recognized. Where was Lourdes? Merlin, the woman was fast on her broom and her green eyes strained for a moment trying to locate her before giving up. She was probably gone now which was a good thing anyway, meant she didn't get caught, right?

The young woman zoomed forward, flying at a breakneck speed towards the training site, her bag full of vegetables strapped to the back of her broom. The tomatoes had been sitting at her house for far too long and she was just about to vanish the near-rotting vegetables when she had gotten word of this assignment. What a perfect use of the soft and squishy tomatoes.. though she figured she'd let them sit outside on her veranda for a few more days to let them get nice and rotten. Cackle.

She slowed down just a hair as she saw people on the ground just ahead and she reached behind her to grab her bag full of rotting tomatoes. Not aiming for anyone specific, just the group in general, Mariel turned her bag over as she flew, emptying the contents towards the people below. Take that, suckers! Then she accelerated once again, flying faster to get the heck out of there.

Kimothy 08-01-2013 01:44 PM

Ooooooh man!

The leader-dude of the YATI nearly hit her. Good thing he didn't. Lourdes was totally a ninja in disguise. Except not now because she and her team were wearing the ninja suits in public. Oh... yes. That was a nice shot of there, Mariel. Woop. Did she smell another bump on her salary or something? 'Cause the whole team of G&S ninjas totally were getting a small increase in their salary this month. Believe it or not.Now where were her other two ninjas? They were supposed to follow along. Eh... nevermind.

It wouldn't be a bump on her salary she would be smelling in a while.

Lourdes then sped over nearer to the group of them and threw a BIIIIG stink bomb at them. Oh, that looked like a bad idea. Because the smell was GROSS and spread fast like wildfire. That was part of it though. Defense training, they said.

Take that, YATI.

PadfootAndTheWolf 08-01-2013 03:47 PM

As he watched his Department Head and a fellow employee take to the sky and begin their barrage on the YATI's of level two, Ellis couldn't help but smile. He had a feeling that his older brother would have loved this little activity.

Recard pulled down his epic ninja mask as he mounted his Moontrimmer 1500. The former Tutshill Tornados Keeper flew to the area above the MLE employees and glance down at them. Those girls down there (Vivi & Aspen) would just love to try and fight off a sexy ninja like him, obviously.

"BONSAI!!!!!" There went a few dungbombs.

Holmesian Feline 08-09-2013 03:36 AM

Simon was glad he had thought of adding the perimeter shield to their defense, especially as he saw but didn't feel the bombardment of items being thrown their way. One was something reddish brown and obviously stinky as the smell permeated the invisible barrier yet nothing else did. Yuck! Whatever it was.

He turned to Josh and Kennedy, Genevieve and Aspen. "Okay...so I'd say now is as good a time as any to work out a plan or strategy." Not when they were sitting ducks exposed for all to see and potentially be hit. Cue strike two with something stinky hitting the shield and holding true. Or in Josh's case and the plants...caught and dragged away. First things first was deciding on the role of their leader, Emily in the matter. She had gone way to smoothly in his opinion to not be in on the plan.

Next was figuring out if there actually was another destination they were to be heading for or the ambush was the entirety of the situation. That was certainly something to think about as the next flier made its appearance throwing dung bombs their way, or at least in the seeming direction of the two females. Simon in turn raised his wand and strengthened the shield out of precaution. "Any takers...?" Because this was a democracy in the group...they worked together.

And because disapparting back to base and simply running were NOT viable options for aurors. Or auror trainees.

This was getting pretty stupid. Not to be a naysayer, but Genevieve had packed clothes and supplies and a TENT for an actual camping trip, and they were still within the first few hours. They'd been constantly attacked, their leader was gone, it didn't look like they'd ever get to set up camp like normal people, and WHAT WAS IN HER HAIR.

Rotten tomato? They were throwing bad produce at the YATI?

THIS WAS STUPID.

She frowned darkly at Aspen as she wiped tomato off her face. It would be nice to do a proper cleaning spell on her hair and clothing, but since a new slew of ninjas had appeared... it would have to wait. "Protego Maxima," Vivi cast as big a shield as she could manage, sending some of those dungbombs bouncing back the way they'd come.

"We have to establish our own base camp. Right now, we're just standing here taking the onslaught, but we need to be on the offensive instead. The only way to manage that is to pick a spot and set up a defensive perimeter. We're in this until someone tells us it's over."

Everywhere he turned to it smelled. Like, really, really bad. Kennedy didn't do good with bad odor. Give him slimy gunk and he'll tolerate it -- just not on his hair, though. But bad smell...lets just say his sister's cookies weren't settling very well in his stomach.

He heard what Genevieve said. Base camp. Sure. Why not?

"Okay," he nodded. "How about here?" They were already protecting the area, and everywhere they went they were being followed. They'd just be wasting their energy running around.

He aimed his wand at the spot in the sky where dung bombs and other things seem to fall from, and shot repeated stunning spells.

Take that!
