He swallowed and gave her a smile. "I'm guessing you and kids don't mix." Brad had actually gotten that reaction quite a lot. He didn't mind though. He loved his job. Bradley nodded with enthusiasm. "Yep. This is the first thing I've had to eat since breakfast." Busy, busy Bradley. Unhealthy?.......... yeah, ok, he had a point. Emily shrugged, shoving more of the bacony goodness in her mouth. The line was slooowww, or at least, slower than she wanted.. but she was entertained for the time being.
She raised a brow in response to Bradley's comment. "Hypocrite much?" Pffffttt, then again, she probably was too. Owing to the fact that coffee wasn't exactly a food group of its own accord. Nope, but it did provide sustenance. "So why nursery healing?" Meaning, why kids? Why not the big kids... the ones that usually cried less.
Extending her hand, Emily grabbed at a pastry thing.

Extending her hand, Emily grabbed at a pastry thing. MMmmmm. This sandwich was really good. And people were probably starting to stare at him because of the noises he was making. Brad was hungry okay? The bacon sandwich was like gold from the gods.
This time he managed to swallow before answering her question. "I can't help it when the kids get sick. Not like I can just run off and leave them there." Nope. Because that would be cruel and just those poor kids. Bradley shrugged. "I trained as a healer and I like kids and there was a job opening." That was pretty much it. It was either here, St. Mungo's, or somewhere in the States. "Why MLE?" It was only fair to ask the question back right?

The man had a point, Emily nod her head, finishing off the last bite of her sandwich before positioning the savoury pasty in her hand for optimum efficiency in reaching her mouth. Good grip, front and centre, poised for deployment. “And do they get sick that often?” did kiddies not have an immunity these days? Weeeaaak.
Why MLE? Her initial response would have been why not MLE, but she had a feeling it wouldn’t be taken too well. Instead she went with her default response, “it runs in the family... it’s all I’ve ever thought of doing.” That last bit was a lie, technically, as she had considered potions as an alternative.

Brad took another bite of the sandwich. Yep. Eating in line was the best idea ever. He shook his head, swallowing before speaking. "Not sick sick. More like eat too much candy or something sick. Upset stomach sick." Very easy fix. Just a not so fun thing to deal with.
Another bite and voíla. No more bacon sandwich. He eyed the line, looking for what else he could eat as they moved up slowly. "That is a very good reason." Heck. He didn't know what he wanted to do until he travelled the world a bit. So good for her.

He didn't know what he wanted to do until he travelled the world a bit. So good for her. Ohhhhh. Right. THAT sort of sick... though, this only led to more questions. 1. Why were the kiddies eating too much candy in childcare facility? or alternatively, 2. Why were the parents letting them eat too much candy? ... she didn't verbalise her thoughts, it wasn't her business, and she didn't particularly care. Kids were kids, they did stupid things, they got sick, at least the man had work and wasn't paid for sitting idle. "Go figure..." and here they were impatiently stuffing their faces.
After a sniff of the weird pastry thing, Emily stuffed it her mouth and finished it with a few good chews. It was similar to that of a quiche, only, with puff pastry type thing. The savoury goodness was appreciated. "Mmm... it's not really," she said shrugging, "it's hardly original."

It didn't help that he was the one usually giving kids the candy, but he was going to keep that little bit to himself. "Kids will be kids." Better than being a grown up. That's for sure.
Brad opted for grabbing another bacon sandwich. It had been pretty delicious. "Doesn't mean it's not a good reason." It was true. Heck, if he'd been at least half interested in what his parents did, finding a career path would've been much easier.

It was all fun and games being a kid, but putting up with them.. that was something entirely different. Emily didn't envy him at all, but she could respect him, he was certainly more patient than she was.
Emily tilted her head, neither in agreement or in disagreement with it being a good reason. I was a reason, and that was enough. She stood in line - again - not very patiently as she waited to grab one last thing before paying and scooting back to level two. Merlin knew she had better things to do with her time than.. this.. standing... waiting. Chitchat was not among her skills set, but she was willing to try, for the sake of not wasting time. "So.... you been here long then?" she asked, killing the awkward silence, "at the Ministry I mean."

He really needed to take his lunch break earlier in the day. His stomach definitely would appreciate that later.
Another question...and a mouth full of food. Bradley swallowed. "A little over a year now. And yourself?" It was only right to ask the same question back right? The line began to shift forward a little more. Thank god. Then he could actually sit down and get some time off of his feet for a bit.

Emily too stepped forward as the line began to move again, though she still didn't see anything worth grabbing. She'd bide her time. Something would present itself to her, she was sure of it. She nodded, acknowledging his response. He was still relatively new, but not a newb, that was good to know - he was competent enough to keep his job, that was something.
As for her, she pursed her lips, doing some quick mental math. "It'll be nine years in August..." she said after a short pause. So yes, she'd been here a while, but she wasn't old by any stretch of the imagination. Still a young bird.

Now for some dessert. His eyes began to scan the line for something sweet as they moved forward. He continued to muse. "Surprisingly I'm also the oldest of the healers here." Which was weird. He was only 27.
Brad looked at her and blinked. "Wow. That's quite a while." He had no idea if he'd be able to stick around for that long. He was always the type of person to move around and try new things.

He was the oldest Healer? That... was actually rather amusing, he couldn't be much older than her. "Wow.. er, and your colleagues are fully qualified?" Please say yes. She didn't much like the idea of incompetent youngins running around the place. She had her concerns with the YATI as it was. "Mmm," she murmured in response. Quite a while. It was part of the reason why she had managed to climb the ladder to the extent that she had. She was present, and had a perfect attendance record, zero sick days... she didn't have time to be sick. "When you say it like that, I feel old..." so he should take it back. Just to make her feel better.

I don't think the ministry would hire someone who wasn't." Or would they? Who knows. The only reason he was really qualified was all that time he spent helping out at Salem's hospital wing while he was at school. Made detention worthwhile.
Old? There was no way she was that old. "You're not old. You don't look a day over 25." Brad hoped she wasn't younger than that because then he'd feel like a right jerk. But it was meant to be a compliment. Yes it was.

But it was meant to be a compliment. Yes it was. From what he'd seen. Well that did nothing to instill confidence. Not that it mattered to her... not her Department, not her people.. and she didn't use them. So, all's well that ended well. "Mmm, you'd be surprised the type of people that can slip through the cracks..." the Ministry was fairly thorough, yes, but it wasn't perfect. Mistakes were made. Some people could also fake it until they made it... and then before you knew it, they flopped. "Mm... not far off, but thanks" she mused at his compliment. She was terrible at accepting them and would usually offer blank stares or begin an argument or debate as to why they were wrong... but she didn't have the time or energy for that, so she managed to accept it, and hopefully graciously.

Now that made Bradley nervous. Sure he felt qualified enough for the job, but if the others weren't that was not good. People's health was not something you just messed with. "Well let's just hope that didn't happen." Because that would be really bad.
Brad grinned. "You are most welcome." Her thanks wasn't that enthusiastic, but that wasn't going to stop him.

Brad grinned. "You are most welcome." Her thanks wasn't that enthusiastic, but that wasn't going to stop him. Yes, hope, because that would get them far. Emily offered him an amused smile. Perhaps she shouldn't have said that, it seemed to have made him uncomfortable, or at least, made things seem uncomfortable. "I'm sure we'll live," she agreed, attempting to lighten the mood and resurrect the pitiful attempt at conversation. She really didn't do well with strangers.
Her face was hurting, she couldn't hold the smile for much longer... but... that! that is what she wanted! Emily looked past Brad at the platter of pastries, a cinnamon scroll winning her attention. Stretching out an arm, she nabbed one. Now she would be satisfied, "this'll keep me going for the rest of the day I'm sure," she said, holding it securely between her fingers.

He resisted every possible urge he had to wink because that would be playing it up too much right? "Just call me Super Brad. Healer extraordinaire." Yep. He just said that. It was out there.
Brad took a bite of the cinnamon scroll. Delicious. "Not too often." He swallowed remembering it probably wasn't best to talk with food in his mouth. "Just when the day gets really busy or one of the children decide they need to feed me."

"Just when the day gets really busy or one of the children decide they need to feed me." Gah, the smell, the cinnamon, it was making her salivate. Deciding she couldn’t redist, Emily raised it to her eye level, inspecting the sugary goodness before .... devouring it. Or, well, taking a massive bite from it. She raised an eyebrow at Brad, he would be around, good to know. She didn’t approve of the super Brad bit. Nope. Not super, and she was dying to burst that bubble. Swallowing hard, she cleard ger throat before looking him up and down. “No, I think I’ll stick with Brad... just Brad.”
She took another bite of her scroll before reaching for another one... no, two! more. It would come in handy for when she locked herself in her office with paperwork. “They feed you? Is that even safe?” or was he accustomed to getting food up his nose?

Swallowing hard, she cleard ger throat before looking him up and down. “No, I think I’ll stick with Brad... just Brad.”
She took another bite of her scroll before reaching for another one... no, two! more. It would come in handy for when she locked herself in her office with paperwork. “They feed you? Is that even safe?” or was he accustomed to getting food up his nose? Brad took another bite. But then she didn't play along with the Super Brad thing. He faked a slight pout and let out a sigh. "Okay. Brad's fine." There was food in his stomach now. He was back to his usual self.
He watched as Emily grabbed more scrolls and he contemplated doing the same. And then question again. Bradley just shrugged. "Yeah. I mean, it's just something kids do. They cry a lot most of the time if you don't at least take it and pretend to eat it." Even though he usually went the full mile and just ate whatever was handed to him.

Manly pouting... what was with that? Emily stared, watching curiously at his response, her head nodding from one side to the next. Huh. "Of course it is," she said dismissively. She was a Department Head, not a fangirl, and considering he was still a perfect stranger there would be no pet names. Obviously.
Balancing two of her scrolls on the palm of one hand, Emily used the other to continue eating her first. Coming to the food court perhaps wasn't such a bad idea after all... even if the line was slooowww. "Uh huh.." she mused, considering the whole crying thing and pretending to eat. It was perhaps a little out of her range of comprehension. Children. "I suppose making them cry is counterproductive," she noted, cause you know, crying children didn't exactly scream content and well looked after.
Emily nod her head, indicating they should move forward as the line continued. Holding the pasty in her mouth a second, she fished in her pocket for her galleons and handed it over to the food court assistant patron person. Once she received her change, Emily slipped it back in her pocket and removed her scroll.... there may have been a bit of cinnamon dusting on her lip, but she was oblivious, no doubt she would lick it off in due time anyway. "I best be off... things to do, people to wrangle," she joked, "it's been nice meeting you Brad," she farewelled.

Score one Donovan.
Brad nodded. "Not to mention once one starts crying, more tend to join in." Especially when dealing with the babies. It just kinda worked that ways sometimes.
He watched her expert balancing as he started ate his own. Mmm. Delicious. He chuckled noticing the cinnamon on her lips. "Have fun wrangling people. Might want to get that cinnamon off your face first." You know, to be taken seriously and all that. "Nice to meet you too Emily." He smiled and started to go through his own pockets looking for money.

He smiled and started to go through his own pockets looking for money. The crying thing, she could not imagine tolerating. And it was often pointless and incessant - a definite no for her. "Well, good luck with that," was all she had to say on the matter, "really, I don't know how yo do it..." and not go insane. That was some serious strength right there.
Cinnamon? On her face?
...
...
Emily licked her lips, tasting it there. "Thanks... was saving that for later," she justified, before giving him a last nod. "Might see you round..."
And now she really needed to get back to level two, so she made her way off, walking briskly enough to be quick, but not so fast as to look out of place. Woman on a mission right here.

| For anyone! ¼ of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pls João didn't have the heart to tell the Minister that he was the wrong person for this job. Not because he had high ego for a better job or anything, not because he would inform the man incorrectly; but because he was accustomed to Brazilian cuisine and, well, he didn't even qualify British meals as 'meal's. He was pretty picky when it came to food, so he probably wasn't going to like anything served here. Still, he was going to give it a chance. He really was going to taste many, if not all, of the dishes, and try not to compare it with Brazilian food.
Brazilian food.
Longing for it would be a prejudicial approach, but he couldn't help it as he SUSPICIOUSLY eyed the food served there from afar. |

Longing for it would be a prejudicial approach, but he couldn't help it as he SUSPICIOUSLY eyed the food served there from afar. Oh yeah, FOOOOOOOOD. Food was the BEST, and William was simply ECSTATIC to try to eat all of it, right now, ASAP, all on one plate, on his first ever lunch break trip to the food court. He'd been warned to avoid this place --- rumours of 'zombies eat there' and whatnot --- but that had only put him off for about two weeks. Now was the time to try to eat ALL THE THINGS!! And he was very determined and armed with a fork.
He came on down the line, his plate filled to the brim with some of the food choices actually stacked on top of each other in double-decker manner, and paused beside a certain former student of his.
"João!" he greeted the boy young man with a lopsided grin. "Can't decide what to eat first?" Heh heh.
