Albert Kettleburn EraAll historical records pertaining to Ministry of Magic RPG under Minister for Magic, Albert Kettleburn [IC January 2081 - December 2086; OOC June 2013 - January 2015]
It was all about timing- punctuality to be more precise, this was a quality that Emily revered. There was nothing worse than people being late, or early, or otherwise interrupting when they ought not to. So it pleased her that the prosecutor ticked all the right boxes... thus far.
Different.
Emily pursed her lips to disguise a smirk. Different. She was indeed that, but not the office... she didn't feel the need to waste her time decorating or personalising the space. It was her office, not her home (even if she spent more time here than her actual home), so therefore, it could remain as it was when she inherited it. "That's certainly something to consider," she noted Vic's assessment of her paranoia. But in truth, it wasn't the sole reason for the lack of... things... "I doubt my personal possessions would offer anyone much information, regardless."
She spared herself a glance at the two solitary portraits on the wall opposite; Van and Wes. To her, they were as good as family, both having supported her and shaped her into the person she was today. The rest of the dusty portraits had been taken down, though she hadn't gotten around to storing them, they simply sat in a box in the corner of the room, out of place.
Lacing her fingers together and placing them on her lap, Emily returned Vic's smile. She was about to ask what it is he wanted, when she remembered that she had been the one to summon him... perfect. "So Vic," she started, making herself comfortable in the overbearing seat. "How do you like working here? I believe you've been with us over a year now..." She'd read his file, cover to cover, but it didn't tell her anything about how he had settled in, or what his thoughts were toward the work environment.
"Personal possessions do tell me a lot about the person. Though I need to know this person to an extent in order to get the right impression from those possessions." For example, the lack of any personal possessions here indicated that their department head liked her personal life and affairs to be unknown to the employee's body.
The subject change caused him to look back to her and sit a little bit straighter, he fought the urge to bring his ankle up on his knee. "Yes, few months over a year now." A smile etched on his mouth as he continued, "I hadn't expected to participate in one of the division's big cases right away, to be honest, though nothing in my profile indicates not to. It's been a challenge, and regardless of how things took a bad turn in the court, I think our team did their best and presented the case to the jury almost getting the defendant sentenced. Working on that case made me realize I do love working here, definitely better than my former job. Private corporations aren't that challenging.." He had closure to bigger and wider cases here. So intriguing.

She'd watched as the eagle origami circled above her desk before landing, her gaze quickly scanning its contents to identify its level of importance... it could wait, for now. Sliding it to the side of her desk, she continued to give Vic her undivided attention. In terms of his reading people through possessions, she was curious. "And, what can you ascertain about me by my office?" She wanted to know.
Emily, resting the tips of her fingers against each other, observed from her seat. She nod her head as she listened, liking what she was hearing... clearly. "I'm glad to her that." Perhaps there was still some hope for this department... if Vic was anything to go by.
Crossing her right arm around her middle, propping up her left, Emily absentmindedly ran her nails across her thumb in thought. "I would think," she started, breaking the brief silence, "that ministry prosecution isn't your career goal, where do you see yourself going with this?"

Vic swallowed, still clinging to the smile on his face, not admitting that her questions were definitely nervous-making. He could play smart and fool around with Lucie, but this was... real. His boss and stuff. "Business is business, personal affairs are strictly off the table here." He was a Ravenclaw though, he'd answer any question.
Oh see! Nothing to be nervous about, he was saying all the right things so far and she was liking it. Merlin, it was much easier to dance with your boss in a hot dress than sit across from her in a shirt and some pants.
Aaaah, they were talking about his ambition today? He liked it. Vic leaned forward a little and his fingers drummed on his thigh rapidly, a gesture of excitement and nerves. "Wizengamot is the division I'd like to climb the ladder of opportunities." He paused. "Legislation, looking into the laws that organize and make our wizarding world the way it is, discussing laws necessary in critical and special cases. This is what I see myself working for, in the present, and in the future." And not regretting the hours he spent among papers, files and shelves of books.

"That's a shame..." she rather enjoyed being read, it was an interesting insight to how people perceived her, something most were not forthcoming with. Clearly. Oh well.
This, was not like any conversation she'd had with Vic before. There was no gooey cheese pizza between them, nor a dance floor to navigate or food to devour. It was safe to say this was an experience she was enjoying, thoroughly.
Brows raising, Emily nodded, pursing her lips as if she were mildly impressed. Of course, she didn't see him wanting to change divisions or departments any time soon, not that those opportunities weren't there... but she wanted to hold on to him in a more, officiating capacity. "I think I may be able to help you there," she mused, pausing to open her drawer to pull out his folder. "I'll cut to the chase shall I?" Planting it on her desk, she returned her gaze to the for-now prosecutor. "How does Wizarding Director of Prosecution sound to you?" she asked, teasingly, "Is this something you might be interested in?" Cue grin.
Extracting the first sheet from the file, she nudged it in his direction with her index finger.

She'd help him? Was that supposed to be a sarcastic comment? Vic raised one eyebrow at her, not being able to contain himself and smirking instead of smiling. His eyes watched her take something from the drawer and then... oh.
OHHHH. Emily was promoting him?? sort of. She was offering him a promoted position. After a year and a half of his employment. Vic grabbed the sheet, containing his excitement, and tried to tone down the rash ambitious side while he read the possible new job's description. ' Wizarding Director of Prosecution'. What was he even looking for in this sheet? "I would love to." He knew she knew he'd say that. Scary boss lady was cheeky today. "I'm very... thankful that you see I fit this position." His voice was calm and confident, his mind drifted off just a little bit to what this promotion entitled. Celebration? Party? More days sleeping in the office, too.

Even as he grabbed the page she knew he wouldn't say no, Vic was smart, and the smart thing to do was to say yes. Still, it was nice to hear his response to her question. Words just made it all the more... official, but not nearly as official as signing things. Speaking of. Removing the contract from his folder, she pushed it in his direction along with a self-inking quill, "Excellent, ready to sign your life away?" she asked, wondering if the Director of Prosecutions would read every inch of the contract before doing so. It would amuse her to no end.
As for him fitting the position, that was never in doubt. "You've... impressed me," she started, sitting forward a bit in her seat "you're obviously intelligent, educated, you have a strong work ethic, you conduct yourself with a high degree of professionalism, you're committed to the department... I couldn't think of anyone better for the role." That was her analysis of his performance in the workplace, which could not be questioned considering the volume of time and effort he vested in the de Talone case. "You've earnt it."

Sign his life away, they were being a tad dramatic now, weren't they? He smirked and grabbed the contract, ready to read it thoroughly. It was a habit of his to know exactly what he was signing up for, the position was perfect for him of course but it wouldn't hurt to read this new contract and see if there were any drastic changes from his former contract.
It didn't take long. Soon enough, Vic leaned forward on her desk and signed his name.
His smirk faded and was replaced with a modest smile at her following words. He did his best preparing for that case, with the rest of the prosecution team, he never thought that would impress the boss to this extent, though. His workaholic side came to him so naturally, he sometimes forgot lazy people existed. "Thank you. It gives me great motivation to know my boss knows how much I give my job." Merlin it was odd calling this young woman a boss. It was a word for old, washed-out, and cranky people usually (not that Wes was like that but y'know). But she was performing as one flawlessly, so it wasn't hard to acknowledge it, just unusual.
He pushed back the contract and the sheet towards her, not wanting to take more of her time than she could afford.

A smirk formed on her lips as Vic did indeed read the contract top to bottom. Impressive still, was the speed at which he read, then again, he was probably used to such tasks. Her lips slackened into an easy smile, nodding her understanding. She did pick up on the way he used the term boss, something she was quickly growing used to. "Yes, and on that note, I'd like you to start immediately, there's no need to fuss around with transitioning, just jump right in and get yourself settled." Emily doubted it would take the man much longer than a few days to get himself up-to-speed and at least adjusted to the new role.
The department looked more promising already... though, there were still changes that needed implementing. They would no doubt take some time.
"Did you have any questions?" she asked, leaning back in her seat and sparing a glance at the time.

Start immediately, yes, he nodded. No need to waste time on bureaucratic procedures. Vic and Emily had this in common, they were practical. "Of course. I'll get on it as soon as we're done." The De Talone's case wasn't over, more investigations and review of the evidences were needed. Maybe try to look at what the defendant had said in trial from another point of view and try to figure out an underlying meaning.
Questions. "Not right now, no." He needed to sort things out first and act as a Director for a few days before he knew what to ask and what to focus on. "Thank you."

The easiest part of her job, and certainly the easiest part of this day, had been this meeting. It helped that they were both on the same page, both driven and eager to get the job done. "Excellent, I'll check in with you over the next few days in case you need anything," she said with a nod, acknowledging that their conversation had come to an end.
"Thank you for your time," she added, standing and extending her hand for a shake. It was the professional thing to do... and she needed to stretch, two birds, one stone.

Vic smirked and nodded, he wanted to say something cheesy to her checking up on him but he forced himself to keep this meeting official and all business. He hurried to stand up when she did and took her hand with both his hands, "Thank you." He wasn't going to let her down, he said that with his eyes staring confidently into hers.
Walking out the door, he felt himself grin widely and a skip to his step. He should inform Lucie. Invite the family and friends to some fancy dinner.

She was surprised, even if only a little, that he took her hand with both of his, a sign of thanks which was affirmed verbally. "You're most welcome," she replied returning his confident gaze.
"Enjoy the celebrations," she called out as an after thought as she watched him head for the door to leave the office... clearly in a better mood than when he'd arrived, which was saying something. Now. What was the next thing on her agenda?

Gavin briskly made his way to the Office of a certain Department Head. Admittedly it wasn't all that hard to find, he'd know, he had to do it himself because he refused to ask for help. Never know the type of people you could end up talking to in a place like this.
He came to a stop at the door and was about to open it at the risk of interrupting a meeting she might have been having but then he remembered that conversation they'd had by the park bench that had him backing up several feet at a time and checking his face despite there being a lack of any actual explosions.
Well this was bloody brilliant wasn't it?
Was it even safe to knock???

After a solid hour and a half in the office, which was more than enough for her liking, Emily made the executive decision to check up on her employees and mingle a bit. First stop, the Aurors office. It hadn’t helped that they were headless, only increasingly her work load. The advantage to it was that she could still play Auror a bit, which if she was being honest, was far better to Department Head. At any rate, she could only hope they’ve made some progress with their cases. Time was of the essence.
In the moment she opened her door, she was confronted with the sight of Gavin, standing a way off, and looking in her general direction. ..... ???
“Got yourself lost?” she chuckled at the expression on his face.
Even though she’d invited him before, and he’d said he might stop by, the visit was still unexpected. A pleasant surprise. “Something I can help you with Mr. Isaacs?” she asked formally after the pause.

So this was his predicament. Merlin knew how long he'd have to wait for her to show up. The thought crossed his mind to send a patronus out, it'd find her and fix his problem whether she was inside or somewhere else completely but there was no need. In the next minute or three the door was opening. Whether it was someone leaving her office or her, it didn't matter, just so long as someone else braved that door because it wouldn't be him.
Ah! Emily! Good!
Clearly one of them was amused by this predicament. "Not at all. Found my way here all by myself, thanks." Not many wrong turns he could take so there was that. As for whether or not there was something she could help him with. He nodded and walked by her, heading into her office. Might as well get a look inside. Conversations out in hallways weren't his thing.
No pictures and a nice fireplace. He'd expected as much. His eyes idly trailed the decor in her office even as he spoke. "As a matter of fact there is. Got a message from Aron for you." How did she managed to keep her desk so organized?

All by himself? Well of course he would have, he wasn't the type to seek out an escort. Emily took a measured step to the side so as to let him pass, because clearly this meant he wasn't kidnapping her for lunch. "Come on in," she added after he had already past her. Shaking her head a little, Emily followed suit, closing the door behind them. She stood in the centre of the room for a brief moment, observing him nosy around her office... though there wasn't much to see, that was one of the many advantages to being meticulously organised.
Moving to perch herself on the corner of her desk, she extended her hand to the solitary chair in front of her. He was welcome to sit and make himself as comfortable as possible. If he wished. "You're playing messenger boy?" she asked, confused, wondering why or how on earth he was delivering messages on Aron's behalf. "Well let's hear it then," she said, hazel eyes locked on his with anticipation. She was all ears, he had her attention 110%. After all, it wasn't everyday the Senior Undersec delivered messages personally.
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
He was still having himself a look around her office. There might not have been much to see but that was what made it even more fascinating, wasn't it? He noted next the solitary chair....didn't look very promising. Nope, her hand extending aside he flopped down in the lovely looking leather chair, turning in it so he could face her from her spot at the desk's corner.
Messenger Boy? He grimaced at the word. "It's what happens when the memo's on Level 3 stop working as well and you've been asked to cover Levels 1 and 2." Which was another story all in itself. "The ones going through your seating area are looking a bit droopy by the way, just thought you'd like to know."
But of course that wasn't the message and he needed to get to that....maybe delegate to her as well while he was here. It'd make it a lot easier for himself. "You're familiar with a research lab, yes? The one the mutants and crups are thought to have escaped from?" The way Aron was talking, he would assume she did. "It seems the place didn't have any legal papers in order or any building permits in the first place. Makes the testing there just as illegal and he wanted you and your people on that." He leaned back in the chair, almost like he was getting comfy, which he should, he'd been on his feet since the moment he left that place and the chaos there.

Whatever interest he found in the place, was enough to interest her. So as it was, she was happy to sit and observe Gavin inspect her space. Because that was all it was, her professional space. His complying to sit got a smile out of her, and it grew as he adjusted his seat. She could have sat herself down too, but she didn't want to risk loathing her chair more than she already did, so her desk would do, for now.
And then he exposed her to a plethora of emotions. Amusement, at the look on his face, curiosity at the mention of level three and his having been delegated to, and lastly dread. The memos. No. "Uhuhhh..." Her memos had to keep working, there were no if's or but's about it. "Thanks... I'll keep my eye on those..." because she rather liked the convenience of the system.
The mention of research lab resulted in a raised eyebrow. Crups, lab, yes.. mutants from there too? She supposed that made sense. Lookit that, he was connecting dots for her, how very kind of him. "Yes, of course," she prompted, acknowledging her understanding. And then Boom! Bam! That, was definitely good to know. A slow smile akin to that of a childs in a candy store grew on her face. "You don't say?" she mused rhetorically, hopping off her desk and moving around to her chair now. Despite its ostentatious style, it served its purpose, so she couldn't complain all that much. "I'll have a team on it within the hour," she said, picking out two squares of coloured paper from her draw. She took only a moment to scribe a few notes, which she then dropped into her in-tray. The task wouldn't be forgotten, her system was flawless - in her mind at least. "Anything you haven't told me?" she asked, before summoning a memo slip to send her people. She could relay her instructions personally, but they were a competent group, so they'd manage without her stares, plus... she wanted to check out her droopy memos for herself.

Gavin had finally had his eyeful of the office and gave his full attention once again to Emily. He'd missed the amusement and curiosity but looked just in time to see the dread. Yes. See? Failing memos were scary. Not in a literal sense but rather, a business sense. There had to be a lot going in and out of this level, imagine needing a lacky to do all this transferring of knowledge now. Wasteful. He gave a nod when she said she'd look into. "Best you do. Wouldn't want to end up like me and Aron." Leaving their offices and asking each other to be messengers. Ugh.
And just like that she was off. Aron wasn't kidding when he spoke about her mojo and getting it going. It was almost like the woman had been shifted into gear. Merlin! He watched her moving about, kinda like her mind was already giving her images of what was to come. No doubt she was looking forward to this...but...."You've got to be kidding." He raised an eyebrow at her. Really? "The least you could do is wait until I leave." She was going to send a memo while he was forced in here because of failing memos??? That was just cold.
So cold in fact that her question nearly went right over his head. Good thing he was one to keep his wits about him. Anything else he had to tell her. "Yeah...there was another mutant break out down in Harmony's Office. You should see what that thing did. Luckily they caught it but there's been more sightings all over and we think some might have gotten into the Ministry. She suggested we do a Ministry wide searches and operate under the policy of 'if you see something, say something', that kind of thing."
He paused hesitantly, wondering if he should tell her the next thing or just let it be a surprize.

End up like he and Aron? No, that would not suit... she was hardly the messenger type, little to no tolerance for that. The best she could do was a patronus - at least that would be more efficient. Lesser matters though... there were surely alternatives... "What about the Protean charm? It's not ideal for every individual, but we could have enough in place so that departments can still communicate should all the memos fail?" It was a thought, because frankly leg work was a time waster, and she was not. They could easily link up some memos. Ten departments, ten memos each so as not to bother those that the message was irrelevant to, and one as a Ministry-wide... in case of emergency and the like. "Receptionists and PA's could easily monitor those on the Departments behalf." Again, just an idea, but it's what she would do, since hers were apparently droopy looking.
Emily grinned, pleased with herself as she worked. "I can multi-task, so what's the point in waiting?" Had he really expected her to sit idly. Her hands needed things to do, it was a saving grace for her - seeing as her tackling and wrangling opportunities were limited. His expression denoted surprise and something else.. almost as if he were wounded by her actions. "Apologies," she added, though she didn't stop. He'd get over it.
It was her turn to raise her eyebrows. Again, this whole mutant thing, fascinated her. "So? What did it do?" she pressed, because going to have a look for herself wasn't going to happen anytime soon. As for the sightings around the Ministry, she wasn't all that surprised. Magic had a way of attracting the weird the whacky and everything in between. "Not a problem, I'll have secuirty on it and alert my people to report any sightings..." or you know, capture the creatures themselves. How hard could it be? "Harmony's running lead on this I'm assuming," she mused, "with Aron's support?"
She got the feeling Gavin was holding out on her, so she sat fully in her seat, head resting on the back, quill abandoned on her desk, memo too. She was all ears, if there was something he had missed...
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
It was just like her to seek solutions.....only after it might have been on the verge of affecting her as well. Not surprizing and under normal circumstances he would have applauded her ideas but that didn't seem to be the problem. At least not on his level. He'd never asked Aron. "Those might only work in certain areas within the Ministry. There's some kind of faulty magic breakdown on my level from what I'm hearing." At least, that's how he and his staff had assessed it. They still needed maintenance to take a look at it but that was the unofficial story for now. That being said, it was worrying. If faulty magic was making the memos stop, what else would it make go wrong?
And there she went missing the point. Multi-tasking and being all efficient while he was forced up and down stairs. This wouldn't work. Nope. They needed a solution--fast. Gavin shrugged at her apology. Might as well use them while they were still working, yeah?
Good Merlin, why did it look like she was so....what was the word...fascinated by the idea of a mutant causing havoc? He gave her a look, one that playfully suggested she seek professional help. "It wrecked the office, what else would it do? Smashed things and there was the acidic saliva to add--OH!" Because this was also something he was meant to mention. "Light. Harmony mentioned the mutants seemed to have some strong aversion to light. Best not go shining things at it." Yet another thing for her to pass on to her people.
"Yup." He said with a nod. "He seemed a bit reluctant but he agreed to go off what she said...which brings me to the next thing...." Seeing as she was eyeing him like she expected him to go on. "We might be running search parties through this place. She asked me to cover Levels 1 and 2--and of course I'm asking you to help out here--not only are we looking out for them but we're catching them too. Cages will be made available by the holding area in Level 4." Welcome to the search party?

Emily considered his response. "So it's... more than just the memos?" she asked, wanting clarification. Yes, she knew about the lift thing, and Merlin was that an inconvenience as it was, but... "it's that rooted an issue?" Ugh. Of course she had learnt not to expect things to be simple and easy, but this was not ideal. Broken magic was a huge threat to the Ministry, not just in its daily running but all the security as well. It was all linked, it was intrinsic. "Have Maintenance made any headway with that?" At all? Because this was slowly but surely climbing on her list of priorities.
Perhaps it was a good thing she was sitting after all. Emily was temporarily lost in thought, wondering what the cause of these setbacks were. It was becoming clear though, that MLE would be effected, and that it was just a matter of time. Wonderful.
Refocusing her attention on Gavin as he continued to discuss the whole mutant thing, Emily's dismissed his you belong in an asylum look, she was used to that by now. Oh. Well that was dull... "I'd hardly call breaking things and saliva havoc.. but okay.." again, different levels, different experiences, different standards. It was just one of those things, they were worlds apart in this respect. But OH? Light. They didn't like light? "Thanks for the heads up," she said, adding that detail to her notes. She gave her memo a once over, it was good to go. She watched as it folded itself into a plane, and then...
...
..
.
"Yeah... I see what you mean," she commented as the plane glided and dipped through the air, the door opening with plenty of time for it to zipflllllooaaattt through before it closed again. Merlin help them.
She could hardly think which was worth her attention more, the mutants or the memos. Mutants were hardly an issue for level two, so she was slightly less inclined to go with that one, even if it sounded more promising. But alas, it seemed she didn't have a choice in the matter. As fun as search parties sounded, there was something far more amusing in the thought which made her grin - flashing her pearly white teeth and all. "So you'll be assisting in the hunt and recapture?" she asked, clearly delighted by the idea. Of course it went without saying that she would get her people to help, heck, she could spare some time to go on a mutant!hunt if necessary. "Or are you merely coordinating?" Seeing as he was so fond of delegating... and it sounded as if he was delegating to her, or recruiting, or whatever. Either way, she wasn't complaining.
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
He considered her question for a moment. "I...dunno how rooted it is. I was just told some charms have been going wonky and when all the memos stop at the entrance to the level it leaves you wondering what's wrong with the level itself. I haven't found anything else malfunctioning, just a file or two thrown about," Weird seeing as they were meant to be filed away, "but that's pretty much it." As for Maintenance. That was another story in itself. "Let's just say I've been meaning to head down there." No memos, meant manual delivery, shoddy lifts meant he'd have to take the stairs all the way down....then all the way back up. Gavin was still waiting for the right shot of motivation to jolt him into action. Needless to say, it hadn't arrived yet.
Of course it wouldn't be havoc, not for her. There was no comment for that, just none. Until one of them brought a tornado of some kind in here, possibly setting off an explosion while it was at it, he didn't see her thinking these things were all that bad.
He watched intently as she sent the memo flying, noting the dip and slow pace it took on. Slower than the one he'd walked by on the outside, though he wouldn't point that out. It was already clear something was going wrong with them, details would have only given her something to fuss about. So just another nod.....and a longing look too maybe, yes, he couldn't help it. His were in a HEAP by the entrance. They didn't even dip.
His eyebrow raised at her grin. Something funny and he'd missed it--nope! Didn't miss it at all. He pulled a face at her, refusing to smile even though it one was tugging at the corners of his mouth. "From what I gather I'll be participating, but that's nothing a little careful delegation can't fix." He responded with a smirk though he saw himself participating, unfortunately, cage and all. He drew the line at diving after those things or crawling along the ground.

Emily listened, nodding her understanding at intervals. If it was something that was, or could, effect whole levels then it was a serious concern. Charms oughtn't go wonky for no reason, surely. The occasional update or upgrade yes, but this was very weird. Very weird. The impression Gavin gave her was that Maintenance still hadn't been clued in, or at least, the matter hadn't been pursued, she almost had to ask why, but stopped herself. The only sound she made was an "mmmm" of understanding.
Between their discussions and now the memo, Emily was feeling moderately deflated. It meant their work load would likely increase nearly exponentially. Dramatic, perhaps, but it would feel like an uphill battle if they had to worry about trivial things such as communication. It was only now, with the prospect of the same happening to them that she could finally appreciate the difficulties Gavin, and no doubt Aron, have had.
Her grin faltered a little, settle into a softer, more subtle smile. Always with the delegation, for once, she would like to see him get his hands dirty -- just not with acidic saliva, directly. "Right, well did you want me to send a troop your way? Or shall we just focus our efforts on our own levels?" The latter made more sense to her, but she'd let him run with this as he liked, she was happy enough to take a back seat... so she could see the show.
