Abandoned Building at 152 Whittaker Street The Minister's Office has temporarily relocated to this decrepit abandoned building. There are still plenty of charms in place to protect the Minister for Magic.

Default Office of the Senior Undersecretary

The conditions of the room are perhaps better than those in the Minister of Magic's Office but not very promising by a long shot. The Senior Undersecteray has set up his office on the east side of the building in a semi functional room. Much like in the rest of the building, the lights do not work however the wide window behind his desk provides him with the necessary, if not too much, lightening to get his work done.

All about the ground the scattered papers and dirt piles are a constant reminder of the exquisite office he's left behind. The cupboard to the corner rumbles and shuffles occasionally, an indication of its inhabitants. Merlin knows what's inside but the Senior Undersecretary isn't keen on finding out. The chair designated for visitors is no more comfortable than Gavin's and though he apologizes, there is nothing more he can do. Don't whine about the conditions, you're only visiting, he's stuck here for the entire day.

Who knows what other nasty habits you might have picked up." Could she see the concern on his face? He was trying really hard to make it look legit...though most likely failing.

Her pulling her chair closer told him she wasn't at all put off by what they'd now both established as a joke. She was still sitting there and not giving him any hard looks, rather she was getting more comfortable and reaching into her bag for whatever she'd brought. There was a hint of curiosity as he watched but in the end it didn't matter to him. He wasn't picky or particular about food and was usually fine with whatever she got him. "I could have conjured you a better chair you know. I can't imagine that's very comfortable." See? He could be accomodating.

Her line of conversation was moving closer to a persuasive demand in his head. Now it could almost be classified as proper hole boring and he would concede. "Touché." He said, leaning across to take the whatever was wrapped in the white wrapper. Her point was most valid, he knew she wouldn't be leaving and what's more he knew he'd have preferred having lunch with her as opposed to whatever it was his PA had dumped on his desk before he left earlier. "So what's the verdict? Are we in danger of some ax-murderer running in on us at any minute?" She did say she'd down some surveillance, right? Might as well pass on the info while she was here.

Her casual smile might have lifted into something that resembled a smirk at that point. "I've had practice," she mused, shrugging off his complimenting of her complimenting skills. Where he was concerned, she'd gotten much better, it was a shame that didn't extend to others as well. But she couldn't go being that nice to everyone, it'd ruin her reputation. And the continued rubbing off on was something she couldn't disagree with. "We'll call it a temporary lapse of my better judgement," she decided, never mind that it didn't seem at all temporary. Gavin's expression did nothing for her to take this all seriously, it was simply the nature of their conversations, even their most serious of topics were convoluted and coated with their own flavour of ridiculousness.

Abandoning the bag for a quick moment so she could indulge herself with a swig of her coffee, Emily's eyes turned up to meet Gavin's. A better chair? If she wasn't smirking before, then she most certainly was now. But it only lasted a moment before settling into an amused grin. "I'm touched you'd do that for me, but I'm low maintenance, this is fine." She even made a show of wiggling her bottom on the seat, communicating its comfort there - never mind the unsettling creaking it emanated. She could do without a throne to sit on. If this was what he afforded his employees, then it would work for her too.

Seeing as he was conceding to her hole boring, Emily was happy to consolidate this as a victory - because it wouldn't have mattered if he accepted the food or not, she'd still have gained with invading his space and enjoying his presence. Talk of work though, she would have saved that till after their break - if only so she could stay longer, but he had asked, so she would supply him with an answer, one he might not be ready to receive. "If they're of the muggle persuasion, then you're perfectly safe," she acknowledged with a nod, busying herself with her own croissant, the paper bag placed to the side of her chair on the floor. "But there's nothing to stop one of our kind coming through and blasting holes through your frail walls," she added, brows raised before taking a bite. Did he comprehend the enormity of this? Did he see where she was going with it?

There was a lot of truth to be seen in that statement. Practice, she had it and it hadn't always been the voluntary kind of practice either. He could remember when most of her compliments were given by accident, usually meant as a subtle insult but Gavin was never good at accepting those, not without turning them around to mean something nice for himself. For it being a temporary lapse in judgement, he gave an approving nod. "Good." Very good actually. "You listen to me more when you have lapses in better judgement." Like when he would tell her to waste her weekend instead of carrying work home. Of course he fully expected she still did but he knew at least some of the time was wasted now so it was progress.

No? She didn't want the comfy chair? "You sure?" His eyebrow rose in a questioning gesture even as he freed the croissant from it's wrapper to have a bite. "I only left it that uncomfortable to deter my visitors from staying too long--but don't tell them I said that." Bad for business, you know? But still very legit. Make it comfy and they'd get the idea they could stay the whole day and indulge him in small talk he didn't care to listen to. "You not included, naturally." She could stay the whole day if she wanted to and could stay with a nicer chair despite her reassuring him she was fine. Shame she had her own Department to get back to.

Gavin bit into his lunch, eyes trained on her, waiting for her assessment of the building. Once they'd gotten that out of the way he wouldn't have anything but her rattling his brain and his immediate thought process. He nodded slowly as she explained the muggle bit. They were safe, that's what he liked hearing. What didn't sit well with him was the reminder of the death trap they conducted business in. "Right...." His bite went down harder than he thought it would, leaving him to have another sip of his coffee. "Like I said, we're working on that. Lucky we don't have many dark wizards running through decrepit buildings these days." Or did they? Merlin knew he didn't keep tabs on these things. Eh.

"Having a good day?"

The food was going down a treat, and it went down even better with a bit more coffee. Swallowing, she adjusted her grip on her croissant, the bottom bit wrapped neatly in the wrapper to stop her hands from getting even remotely sticky. Did Gavin know how much butter was in these things? Forget about her sugar habits, then French were worse when it came to butter, it was more than an essential ingredient, it was almost their way of life. "I do," she agreed, not begrudging this at all. How could she when it had achieved so many things she otherwise wouldn't have considered? "Listening to you on occasion has its perks."

His persistence was amusing to say the least, and despite her not being needy, she heard him out. It never ceased to surprise her that they actually shared similar philosophies even if they were sometimes worlds apart in their views. Her own chairs reserved for visitors were purposefully few and most certainly uncomfortable for that reason. That fact that he was distinguishing her from the other people that invaded his space ... well, she wouldn't lie, she liked it and thoroughly approved. "Alright then, surprise me," she challenged, accepting that perhaps it might not be so bad to have something nicer to sit on.

Of course he hadn't picked up on the subtle hint, that, or he had ignored it purposefully which wasn't unthinkable. At any rate, she would need to burst his bubble. "I'm going to have to station one of my people here permanently," she noted with as casual an air as possible, picking at an overhanging bit of cheese that threatened to slip out of her croissant. "I promise you they'll be nothing more than a shadow in your lobby... but I'm hardly going to leave the Minister ... and yourself, at risk of harm." Did he know how many crazies there were in the world? Did he know there were people out there who would be too eager to pay them a visit and make irrational demands knowing full well all they had to do was walk through a door? It was in his best interest to have a line of defense to prevent such things from happening. Alarms wouldn't do much to deter, and it wasn't as if his people were skilled in anything security related. - save for maybe Heather. Emily had faith the woman would be of use in an instance like that.

Oh, her day?

"Better now," she started, casually fluffing his ego some. "But no, it's been decent... just wish there was progress in getting back into our building. We're limited in the case work we can get done." Did he know anything about that? About getting back into their building? Heard any rumors? Could he put her mind at ease and say they'd be back by the following weekend? "And your day's not so good I take it?" His earlier greeting had hinted at there being a rough start to his day, especially if her boring holes in his schedule was enough to elicit the look he'd given her upon opening the door. It hadn't gone unnoticed, she was merely waiting for the right time to ask, happy to listen to his woes.

While idly fiddling with the top of his coffe cup the idea came to him that perhaps he should have banished the papers on his desk, at least until after his lunch break. They were doing that annoying nagging thing where they pointed out how very unattended they were. Gavin took another bite, willing himself to focus on Emily and what could have almost passed for another compliment. "I'd like to think it does. I've been known to have brilliant ideas from time to time." France being one of his better ones if he did say so himself.

There we go. In the end better chairs won out. In all honesty he could have given Avery his wand and told her to give it a wave. Anything she produced would have been better than the chair Emily was currently sitting on. "That's the spirit." He rested his croissant on the table then drew his wand and with a simple wave conjured a much comfier looking chair resembling the one he had in his former office--Merlin was that a nice chair. One he imagined was covered in dust and mutant saliva by now. "Do let me know if it's not to your liking."

It was good he hadn't currently been trying to swallow some coffee or a bite of his lunch because her next statement would have sent him sputtering in seconds. The scowl was very hard to hide and there wasn't much effort put into hiding it in the first place. "Is that a line you get your employees to memorize? You're the third MLE-er to offer the promise of 'shadow' security." Why did people think that someone as particular about space as him wouldn't be accutely aware of someone else's presence, despite the scarcity? At the moment he was in a fix, he could hardly tell her not to, not when the Minister's security was also on the line and in the end he just stared, clearly put off with the idea but resigned nonetheless.

Hearing about her day offered some distraction, it was the compliment that mostly did it what with him making her day better and all. "Last I checked Aron and his team were meant to be having a look around but I haven't heard much on the matter." And suddenly there was something else he needed to do. Wonderful. It did need to get sorted, they could hardly expect to continue working under these conditions. Gavin shrugged at her question. "I've had better. Avery's sick; headache, fever, whining." He would have taken the day off but Ari insisted she would and he'd left it at that. "I collected her from school, dropped her home and come back to news I'm not sure I should laugh at or be offended by." It really could have been taken either way.

There would be no arguments here. Some of his ideas were exceptionally good, couldn't be faulted, even if some of his others were flawed and undesirable. It was usually a matter of perspective, and as he'd pointed out numerous times before, hers was not to be trusted. Emily raised her cup for another sip, nothing further to add on the matter.

She wouldn't admit to it, but that chair looked particularly inviting. Shifting to try it, Emily settled herself in, making a show of taking her time in considering its comfort. There was no denying it was far better, but she wasn't against holding back on her approval a short while, taking another bite and chewing thoughtfully.

"Not bad," she agreed eventually, her smile deceiving her cavalier tone.

As for getting her staff to memorise phrases, "My staff are prepared with an arsenal to deal with the mouthiest and most insistent of people," she replied, neither agreeing nor disagreeing. Was it any wonder he'd heard the term so many times? Really? His further silence on the matter was taken to mean she could do what needed to be done without further protests from him, so she was happy enough to leave it there.

"That's what I heard too," she nodded, disheartened by this fact. Perhaps she'd go and have a nosy around herself, blast out a wall and be done with it. She didn't care if they had been joking about that in KA, it was a legitimate option where she was concerned. Walls could be mended, time could not be regained once it was lost. She recalled him mentioning the Avery situation at breakfast, but hadn't realised it was that bad - especially where picking her up from school again was concerned. She could sympathise, if not empathise. "And what news is that?" she questioned, the last part piquing her curiosity,

Gavin was a patient man, she could have taken half an hour to switch chairs and he'd still have been waiting. Her settling in and taking coffee sips didn't bother him much either. Some potions took hours to brew, some days, some weeks and a few exceptional ones could take up to a month and beyond. He grabbed his own cup of coffee and sipped while he waited for her to approve or get him to conjure another. The one thing he wasn't, however, was modest and he found it hard to get generic responses where his work was concerned. In this case, it'd taken a fair amount of thought to get that seat the way it was. Simply saying it wasn't bad did very little for his growing ego. "I'd say I'm wounded but I already know how good the chair is." So no need to have her fluffing his ego. In times of need he was good enough at doing that himself.

And he was going to take that as a yes. Emily was adept at giving the most ambiguous responses and he'd learned a long time ago to take them for whatever he'd wanted them to mean because clarification wouldn't be coming. "I'm not mouthy I'm opinionated, there's a difference." And another sip of his coffee. It wasn't his fault he had a voice that he just so happened to like hearing.

It wasn't a surprize she'd heard that too. It was the only word anyone would circulate and he needed a status report on it, if only for his sanity. Staying here seemed far less bearable with Emily now insisting on ever-present security. "That idea of you playing with explosions is starting to look more appealing." He muttered, still not thrilled with the idea of security even after several moments of thinking it over.

He placed the cup next to his croissant, leaving a pause between them before responding. "Apparently my employees aren't as good at sneaking as I'd like to think?" Was that how he was meant to put it. "Clearly obedient but not quite as good at skirting Department Heads that inturn come to me with tones." He couldn't appreciate those under any circumstance.

If there was one thing she could always count on, was Gavin's ability to turn anything into a positive where his ego was concerned. Should she lose the ability to compliment him from time to time, then he could manage and maintain that handsome ego of his without her assistance. "I don't doubt that you do," she replied, setting her cup back on the table for the time being.

Opinionated, mouthy, it was all the same to her. Both were responsible for making noises she care little for when it came to her work. She knew what she was doing, she didn't need their humble opinions wasting her time and breath. Really, their collective issue was location, location, location ... and more locations. Security was far easier to regulate with single access points, and it was during this whole experience that she developed a fondness for the Atrium, even with all its ostentatious fountain and ugly centaur statue.
"Face it, I'm the best in the biz, so just say the word and it'll be done." If little to no progress was made in the foreseeable future, she couldn't say that she'd wait for approval. Patience was a virtue she was still lacking.

Of all the things she expected to hear, his staffs stealth hadn't even made the shortlist. This was definitely more interesting though... an amused smirk indicating her delight even if it was at his expense. "That's a crying shame, but tones? I trust you didn't let them get away with it?" Gavin was tolerable of many things, even if he didn't admit to it, but tones ... that was rude. "It seems insolence is a growing issue," she concluded, convinced of this matter now. At least it wasn't come from her staff, was it? No, he's said Department Head. Which was curious in itself seeing as she was under the impression they'd lost the rude one.

They were on the same page here, both knowing how capable he was of fluffing his own ego in the event Emily refused to or didn't see the necessity. Lucky for him he always saw the necessity. Her setting her cup down put a curious question in his head. "How many of those have you downed since morning?" He asked, nodding in gesture toward the cup. Nothing much behind the question, just a curiosity to know. Was it safe to bet that the one before her wasn't her second?

There were only so many times when he could tell himself that her silence meant he was yet again right though it was highly unlikely given the context. For all he knew she wasn't even considering for a moment the idea that having an opinion and being mouthy fell on two separate sides of the spectrum, in fact he wouldn't be holding his breath. "I'm not questioning your mastery of the explosive arts," He could find nice ways of putting things some times, "far from it but my word wouldn't be the only one you need. I know a certain Minister who'd like to be informed before holes get blown into his building." Go figure, Mr. Kettleburn was funny like that, he liked being kept in the know.

It didn't take a genius to know the situation had Emily amused. It was written right across her face. "Yes, tones." He reaffirmed with a nod as he reached for his croissant once again. There was a small shrug as he thought of just how much Mr. Summers had really gotten away with. "I did the decent thing, keeping a tone out of my voice--trying to set an example like the saint I am." Surely she could see the halo still shining after that visit. He was exceptionally well behaved. "I wasn't much up for talking though and found it easier to tell him what he wanted to hear then have him be on his way. Less headaches." Because she was right, it had been rather insolent of him, leaving Gavin with no regret for what he would do.

She'd been set to take another bite into her croissant, but paused short of doing so. That question, why did he need to know? Was he going to impose a caffeine ban on her too? She'd already moderately reduced her sugar intake, in his presence at least, surely he wouldn't be policing this matter as well. Emily lowered her food, resting it in her lap, the paper keeping it from spilling crumbs over her. The burning question on her lips was 'what's it to you?' ... but she could already think of a smart mouth response or two he might have used. "If I told you it's the first I've had since breakfast with you, would you believe me?" she asked, avoiding the fact that she had the one Zeke made her before she had breakfast with him. She wasn't lying, just omitting and it was such a minor detail.

Shrugging it off, Emily took up her food again and took a generous bite of it, chewing deliberately as she observed Gavin's response. Yes, an explosive art, he was right not to question it... and as for the Minister. Pffttt. "I'm sure Albert could appreciate my initiative in getting this ordeal over and done with," she gestured to the room they were in, as if it was argument enough, which it was. "But feel free to run the idea by him. I could have a team ready to reclaim the building within an hour." MLE had more than enough fire power, let alone the other departments. If they all pitched in, perimetres would be set, concealment charms in place, muggle repelling charms in place, obliviators on stand by and everything ready to blow in a matter of minutes. It'd be like clockwork. Such a beautiful vision...

...

Oh right, tones. That was less than appealing. Emily shook her head, conveying her disappointment in the matter. "Such a saint," she agreed, humouring him with the halo he clearly stole from her. Telling the man what he wanted to hear didn't sound much like a resolution to the issue, more just a prolonging of future grievances, something she would have put a stop to in a more immediate way. "Sometimes I think you're too nice for your own good." She would have asked who had taken the tone with him, but she could narrow it down to a few Heads at least. Aron was out of the question, Gidyun seemed too passive for it, there was Cale and Ashby... but she didn't have a clue which. It mattered not. Wasn't her business, unless things got heated, then she might intervene - simply to ensure staff security wasn't compromised. Gavin could look after himself.

"On a lighter note," she started, taking up her coffee and figetting with the lid on it, "date night next weekend... and it's my turn to plan, so, can you check with Ari if she minds hosting Zeke for the night?" Common courtesy in asking and all, wouldn't want anything derailing her plans, it'd be inconvenient to say the least.

Common courtesy in asking and all, wouldn't want anything derailing her plans, it'd be inconvenient to say the least.

Emily was on a roll with taking her time today. It was perfectly in line with just how slow his day was going. He took another bite, still watching and waiting for a response. Was it really something she had to give that much thought to? Couldn't have been that many--no...no actually it could. Gavin considered her question a moment. "The proper thing to do would be believing you and assuming you wouldn't lie." It didn't actually answer the question, just like she never did. Taking a page from her ambiguous book. Sure he should have been inclined to believe her but there was no doubt she knew her way around loopholes and the like. For all he knew it could have been a half truth so he'd leave himself half believing.

Initiative she called it. He had a few other words that could have replaced that one but it wasn't likely she'd accept any one of them or the advice that would accompany them so yes, initiative that the Minister would appreciate. At her gesture he glanced around the room, it was depressing in itself and again added more appeal to the blasting and exploding Emily had in mind. He couldn't work like this and not with something--Merlin knows what--making noises ever so often. "Uh-huh......" Within an hour too. She was clearly well prepared and most definitely up to the second with this idea. "I'll...relay that message. He'd be impressed by your efficiency, if not appalled by your tact." Now he was wondering what Aron's take on the situation was. Had Emily already gotten to him with the idea as well?

Too nice for his own good? Huh. He'd never actually looked at it that way before and not in the context of it being nice. An odd thought it was. Gavin shruged, his indifference coming out in the motion. "It's more for myself than for Mr. Summers. Prolonging the conversation would mean him staying longer." For someone that didn't like the company of others it would have been bothersome. "Besides, you have to leave them thinking things are fine, can't have him suspecting anything." It would put a bit of a damper on what he had planned if Ashby went ahead and put up extra security down in his level--which reminded him. "Out of curiosity, did Mr. Summers request any Security Personnel Coverage from your Department? You have anyone patrolling down there?" That could have posed a problem too when he thought about it.

Gavin liked the sound of lighter notes, they promised she wouldn't really questioning his security question. And she wasn't lying about it being a lighter note either. Date night. "Ari was planning to take the girls to the movies then out for junk food. Don't think any of them will mind him tagging along." He could already see Avery grinning at the idea in the event she got better before then and not worse. It could go either way when it came to that little girl. "So," His corners of his lips twitched up inot a smile, "gonna tell me what you've got planned?"

Believing her and all those proper things was the correct answer, though generally speaking she wasn't fond of assumptions. There were so many things wrong with assumptions, an arrogance in deciding what was fact and what was not. "You're right, I would never lie," she agreed, sipping casually, "and it's true, this is my first since breakfast, what with being run off my feet with security checks and all." Having your hands full with coffee wasn't conducive to such tasks, but that wasn't to say her check on their current location was under par, on the contrary, it had taken her that little bit longer, but it was thorough.

She was sold on the matter, she was sold on the matter a long time ago, and see... had they left her to her own devices they wouldn't be in this mess anymore. Go figure they were taking their sweet time in coming to their senses. "You do that," she interjected, in regard to relaying the message. Her offer was there. It made sense. And then they could all get back to doing some proper work. "And there is nothing wrong with my tact, thank you Mr. Isaacs," she noted, feigning offence.

And if that wasn't a skewed view of the world, she didn't know what was. Emily disliked the company of people as much as Gavin, though she was perhaps more tolerable of it and touching... still, she couldn't fathom letting something like that slide, and leaving ones self having to deal with it at a later time. But now that she knew whom it was they were talking about, she couldn't say she was overly surprised. Ashby was, interesting, a true Mysteries man for sure. A smirk cracked her lips as Gavin hinted at what might be a plan forming, so he wouldn't be letting him get away with it. "Careful there, it sounds suspiciously as if you're ... up to something." Cue brow wiggle. She delighted in such plans, despite not knowing what they were, the fact that they were there was good enough to obtain her seal of approval. Emily popped the last of her croissant in her mouth, savouring it before washing it down with some more coffee - which was also fast disappearing. The question regarding security only confirmed her suspicions, but she wasn't fazed, rather, she began weighing up the pro's and con's to perhaps assisting him in... some matters. "Of course I've organised for security, what kind of Department Head do you take me for?" The correct answer to that included terms such as timely, efficient, thorough, organised and those were just to name a few. "I've got Bennett there as the primary," of course that wasn't to say there weren't rotations, and she and Blaise would be doing their own rounds too.

He hadn't left her much time to consider the whole security thing before distracting her with Zeke arrangements and date stuff, a topic which was preferable during break times, during their time. Work could wait a little longer if need be, nobody was dying, nothing was on fire, the world as they knew it wasn't coming to an end. "He'd be thrilled with that, he'd even wave us off I think," she mused at the thought. It still struck her as curious how he disliked sharing her time - despite being easily distracted and leaving her for the company of others at a moments notice. Emily leaned forward in her seat a little, fixing him with a curious look. He wanted to know did he?
"You forget I like to think I've retained some of my mysterious air that you must have at one stage found attractive, so for that reason.... it's a surprise." She said that last part in a whisper. Had he honestly expected a straight up answer?

The cryptic nature of this conversation hadn't shifted. Granted she was being perfectly plain, first since breakfast insinuating only two and being a good boyfriend entailed believing her but being a good boyfriend also including knowing her; there was no way she'd only had two but he'd let her have it. "Alright."

Seeing as she was most likely being legit about this exploding thing, he figured he would actually have to bring this to the Minister, if only to get him on the same page. "Of course not." There was a hint of something in his voice as he played along. "Exploding's perfect. There aren't any subtler ways of getting back inside." And a somewhat pointed look. See the point? Exploding could still be an option, it just didn't have to be the one they drew on within an hour.

It was his turn to try his hand at looking offended, a bit of dramatics he'd perfected. "Me? Up to something? I would never." A mask that could easily be seen through. It was only natural to think he was up to something. One did not simply walk into the Office of Gavin Isaacs and take a tone with him. Being the mature adult he was, he was probably expected to drop this and he would...when he was done. "I'm bigger than that, see?" He said, reaching across for the wand he'd just put down a minute ago then swishing it in a circular motion above his head, creating a halo that faded only seconds later. Hard to ignore the halo this time and it was good to see she didn't have any concerns where this was concerned. He would take the brow wiggling as encouragement; not that he needed any. Gavin's face fell some in contemplation. There was security, not actually a problem with what he was planning on but a nuisance nonetheless when you considered who it was. "Uh-huh....." He took a large sip of his coffee followed quickly by a moment of silence. In actuality, it might have worked out better for him. Ashby wouldn't be patrolling his own halls if he had someone in MLE doing it for him and he didn't think that while patrolling Bennett would try questioning him.

That was just as he'd thought. "This is movies and junk food we're talking about, I'd be surprized if he didn't." Zeke was a smart kid, he would know where there was more opportunity for fun and in this case it was with the girls and Ari. They'd get up to all kinds of things that he wouldn't question and quite possibly regret it in the morning but what else could you expect? "There'd be no reason to insist on coming with us. Date nights mean I have you and I'm afraid I've never been taught the art of sharing. Don't think he'd be keen on being made a third wheel." And he would, whether through the natural course of the evening or deliberate actions on the part of a certain Senior Undersecretary who wasn't above excluding children.

Gavin began leaning closer the moment she did, figuring they were about to share some form secret and was he ever disappointed but only just a little. She was right in thinking he'd appreciate the surprize, he liked that she could keep him guessing even with all his years of people watching and being able to read into certain things. "I can appreciate surprizes..." He paused to add a smirk, "so long as they're worth my while." A challenge he knew she would have no problem with.

"This is movies and junk food we're talking about, I'd be surprized if he didn't." Not even so much as a protest, no further questions, no looks, nothing. He was proving himself to be a wonderful boyfriend, even if he had developed that nasty habit of restricting her sugar. She'd let him have that one. The fact that she hadn't even let herself indulge in the sweet pastries for thier break was evidence enough that she was making an effort to comply.

And there he went with subtlety. Emily rolled her eyes playfully, humouring him in the act. "Mmhhmm, because subtle has worked out so well so far." Subtlety required more time, more planning, more effort in execution and frankly she didn't have the patience for it. Blowing out a wall would be far more efficient and timely. Yep. She was convinced of this, it was a shame he wasn't. Still, she didn't want to dwell on it. If they wanted her services, she'd gladly give them, but so long as they actively sought to rectify the issue, she could withhold her complaints. If only for Gavin's sake.

She had long grown accustomed to his dramatics, but they still didn't cease to amuse her, a smirk played at her lips. If anything his dramatics consolidated the fact that he was indeed up to something, and a small part of her wanted in. With his involvement, whatever the plan was, would be more or less sanctioned, this was part of the appeal. Emily grinned, she knew full well he was bigger than that, he had the big ego to boot. Making a show of having a halo was perhaps the icing on the proverbial cake. "It suits you, the halo," she decided, despite it not really suiting him at all. It was one of those things. His uh-huh at the security bit did little to ease her curiosity, and she found herself wondering what was going through his head. It was clear he was thinking of something... "I trust you don't have an issue with this?" she questioned, fishing for a resposne.

Movies and junk food... yeaaahh.. still, the boy had his moments, his actions had the ability to surprise her and leave her questioning what was wrong with him. But this was sounding promising and he wouldn't have a say in the matter regardless, because there was no way she was willing to share her time with him on that night, not when she had such delightful plans in mind. "I daresay he'd very much hate being a third wheel to what I have in mind, and I don't much care for dividing my attention between the two of you. I'm not one for sharing our time with others..." because he was still the exception.

"And when has a date with me not been worth your while?" Cue brow raise, answer carefully Isaacs. But really, he was being ridiculous in asking such a question. Of course it'd be worth his while, in every way that it would be worth hers.

The eyeroll was enough to remind him they weren't and possibly would never be on the same page where explosions and the proper Ministry were concerned. It was no secret she was all for blowing down the walls and coming from the woman who rigged her desk and office door to explode there was really nothing to question. "We haven't tried anything, subtle or not, as yet. Neither of us can say it doesn't work." The main focus had been the relocation, they didn't really start planning yet. "You're free to strut around my office with a permit to blow every wall off the building after we've exhausted the less intensive methods." By then she would be well within her rights to brag that she told them so. It'd only be fair.

With his wand back on his desk, he reached for the croissant he'd been neglecting in favour of the dramatics he added to their conversation. She'd already gotten through with hers and oddly enough, he didn't notice until he was taking a bite of his own and noticed the lack of a croissant in her possession. "Does it?" He asked, his smirk mirroring hers. "I've always pictured myself a horns and pitchfork type." Or maybe just the horns, he could make enough of a statement with those. Reaching over again, he snatched his wand off the desk and took aim at her this time. "Think I'll leave the halo wearing to you." The halo lasted much longer this time but just like the first, it faded. "Always knew you could pull one off." Between his lunch and fitting halos on his girlfriend, he'd almost forgotten the talk of 'non-existent' revenge that he might have been plotting. "No, no issues at all, in fact that'll work perfectly. Of course now I'll have to stop by there myself, have to check the standards--not undermining you of course but as Senior Undersecretary I think I should know the conditions we're working with." So yes, he was going snooping and not even Ashby would be able to stop him.

Gavin was beginning to appreciate the surprize element even less, but only because of the curiosity it was building up. Something that was to be expected when she went saying vague things like that. Zeke would feel like a third wheel with what she had in mind...but she left it at that, no further hints, no saying was WAS on her mind. It would bug him for the rest of the time he just knew it. "That makes us equally selfish and I must say I approve." Even with children, a selfish thought here and there was still allowed. "Your attention serves me best when it's undivided." And Merlin knew that kid could get NEE-DY. Nothing as bad as Avery level but it was still plain as day.

His fingers curled around his cup of coffee just when she asked that question. He spent the moment of silence that followed weighing the pros and cons of attempting a joke at a moment like this while he sipped at it...but then he remembered the day he told her he contended with her and all thoughts at a joke DIED. "Can't say I think of such a time." See? He could learn from his mistakes.

And that there was where they were going wrong with this. Dragging their feet. It went without saying she was a woman of action, so all of the subtlety business and non-action was perhaps driving her a little mad. Nobody could blame her for wanting to take matters into her own hands. If you wanted something done right, you needed to do it yourself. A policy she wouldn't hesitate to act on if it all became too unbearable. "May I make a suggestion, Mister Senior Undersecretary?" she asked, a hint of sarcasm in her tone. "Let's get on with it." There was little point in wasting valuable time in making adjustments to their current arrangements when it was temporary to the point where a hole in the wall could undo all of the time spent making these spaces habitable. A hole in the wall was preferable to her hole in the ground. "I'll be waiting for that permit." But she wouldn't need to blow every wall, just a modest section of it. She could limit the extent of her destruction, you see?

"It's unexpected, but it does," she agreed. The horns and pitchfork, under different circumstances, would have resulted in a laugh of some sort, as it was she simply grinned broadly. "You pull those off too," she mused, toying with the idea of him having both horns and a halo. "And red is a lovely colour on you." It did all sorts of favours to his complexion, because not anyone could get away with wearing red. Leaving the halo wearing to her, how generous of him. Emily wasn't fazed with him pointing his wand at her, though had it been anyone else and they'd have lived to regret it. Instead, her eyes peered up to glimpse the shimmering gold halo above her head. "Oh hush now, you'll go giving people the wrong impression of me and they'll be in for such a rude awakening." Halos were deceptive, especially when placed on her. There was no denying she had her good qualities, she was charitable if nothing else... but that was as far as her angelic nature stretched.

Uh huh... check the standards. Knowing full well he'd be an idiot to check her standards, she was content on assuming he was checking Ashby's and it was all a part of his plan... whatever that plan might be. If it was simply as he said and checking conditions, then she wasn't interested, she got enough of that on patrols, there was no need to invite herself along to another - even if his company would be more favourable. He could suit himself, and she'd do much the same.

And he'd said the magic word. Selfish. It was a term she didn't think ought to apply to parents, and despite Zeke being hers simply out of the goodness of her heart, she didn't feel she owed him everything. She was entitled to be selfish, his welfare wasn't compromised in doing so, and it benefited the boy in a number of ways he wouldn't yet understand. She'd still go back for him, he'd live without her for a night every so often. "Your approval was never in doubt," she acknowledged, pausing for a sip of her coffee before continuing. "And it serves us best," she corrected, noting his selfish words. It served to benefit her as much as it served to benefit him, she wouldn't be losing out in this arrangement, at all. He was at least right in saying he couldn't think of a time where her not making it worth his while was the case. Correct answer, even if it seemed to take him some time to reach that inevitable conclusion. Smart one he was.

He thought they'd concluded the matter, both agreeing they'd wait to be blowing holes through anything, giving subtlety the chance to prove itself before they went out, wands blazing. It wasn't so much Emily he was apprehensive about giving blasting reign but yeah, that might have been part of it too it was her Department of explosion happy recruits all eager to see some action. He'd heard how it went, so many wanting Auror work but getting security, there was no convincing him they wouldn't go ALL OUT the one chance they get to not be running patrols. The conversation didn't die there though as he'd come to learn while eating the last bite of his croissant and the sarcasm wasn't missed. "We will be getting on with it." A little later than they should have but yes. "It's a matter of ironing out little details first. Mostly running things by Aron since his team was specifically charged with working on entry." But she was free to keep waiting on the permit, it wouldn't take that long if things continued like this.

Unexpected was right and he was still sceptical about the whole thing but he'd take her word for it because Gavin was never one to turn down a compliment. "Red?" His brow rose questioningly but he did give it genuine thought. That wasn't a colour he found himself wearing too often. "I think it's more the idea behind the horns and pitchfork that suit me. The colour's circumstantial." Nothing to be done about it, not that anything needed to be done about it, what with her compliment about him pulling it off better than most and all. Gavin shrugged at her protest, the amused smile showing his lack of concern for anyone but himself on the matter. "I don't care what sort of awakening they get, it's got nothing to do with me." A very true statement. It wasn't like he'd be the one getting the rude awakening afterall.

It was good she'd stopped asking questions, not that he thought she would have tried busting him or anything of the sort, no. When it came to a matter like this, he indulged himself in the thought that she was on HIS side and not Ashby's. It was only natural to think like that. Emily was strict on work stuff but not even she would have taken it so seriously...or maybe she would...this was Emily and MLE they were talking about...still, she wouldn't have come taking a tone with him after. Who did that? It was plainly rude.

Despite actively working for the 'Best Uncle Ever' title, Gavin had never stopped knowing how to spoil himself. The man was selfish by nature so as much as he tried giving his nieces attention he was also keen on taking himself away from the equation ever so often. Usually it was to be off doing something for himself and by himself but now there was an Emily added to this equation and even more incentive to be selfish when he could. "Us. Of course." Naturally it would benefit them both. As much as she was grand company, he considered himself excellent company too. "Could pack some clothes for him while you're at it, we've got room he could spend the night." And a knowing look even as he sipped his coffee. That might have been him inviting himself to spend the night at her place, maybe, just a little, there between the lines, yuuuup.

It was possible that this conversation had somehow reached beyond its expiry, and she found herself with nothing more to add. It was such a depressing topic of conversation too... and the hell with details, there was only two details in this instance that mattered. The first being that they were locked out, and secondly, everything they needed was locked in. Ergo, down goes a wall, and problem solved. "Time permitting I might stop in and see how he's going, see if I can be of assistance." She wanted in on it, if only to ensure it went through as quickly as possible. But nevertheless...

Gavin wasn't wrong in his assessment, and she nod her agreement. However she wasn't wrong either. Red did suit him, but it wasn't to say it was her favourite colour on him, far from it. "And here I thought you were well hearsed in accepting compliments," she noted curiously. Given all the time that they had shared together since his first accusations about her halos, it still didn't cease to amaze her that he believed she had them. "I'm surprised you haven't had your rude awakening yet, actually." And not that, did have something to do with him.

Conscious of the fact that time was quickly running out, Emily peered at her watch to assess how much more of his time she could waste, but that coupled with the errands she needed to run and appointments she needed to make only confirmed her need to depart. Sigh. She sipped from what remained of her coffee, wondering if perhaps she could get away with another after she left.

She'd been contemplating things, work things, when his voice snapped her out of her thoughts, only to realise that she was holding an empty cup to her lips, drained of its contents. Pity. And yes, them. It was all his doing, so he ought to at least acknowledge it. At least he was getting the right idea now. Date nights weren't proper date nights without spending all of the night together, or perhaps that was the greed in her talking. Emily smirked at his suggestion, one that had crossed her mind once or twice already. "It's a good thing we're prepared for anything, his in case of emergency bag is packed and ready to go..." so that would do the trick nicely. It was a good thing she had him pack two of such bags, one for actual emergencies and one for in case she wanted him out of the house, for whatever reason that tickled her fancy. And sleep over opportunities had a way of cropping up unexpectedly at the best of times... so if he saw it as an adventure he'd be more willing to play along.

But alas, she was stalling, so with the faintest hint of an apologetic look, Emily rose from her seat. "I should be heading back now," stating the obvious, and he should get onto that paper work he tried so hard to ditch her for, mmhhmm. "I'll see you later? Or tomorrow?" she questioned, moving to his side of the table to plant a quick kiss on his cheek.

He needed to make a note to have his PA add that to his list of things to do. The list that included today's errands maybe because he didn't think he could keep telling Emily to wait all that much longer...and he wasn't keen on waiting to get back to his own office either. The fact she wanted to stop by Level 3 to see if she could be of some assisstance struck him as curious but he wouldn't question it any further than a raise of his brow. If it came right down to it, he trusted that not even Emily's coersion would make Aron make a hasty decision without exploring all other options.

"I am." He confirmed. Taking compliments was like second nature to him. Whether it was given by himself or others he knew how to bask in them and remind himself of his grandeur. "I just know how to find better ones too." Like saying the colour suited him as opposed to the look itself. He preferred the look and could guide her along that line of complimenting so it wasn't a problem. Gavin waved off her surprize at his not having a rude awakening. "We've been through this maybe a million times." He paused, allowing traces of a conceited smirk to spread across his lips. "I'm the exception." So no rude awakenings for him. Closest he'd come to one was the day they met in the lifts but it could hardly be classified as rude now.

Gavin noted her glance at her watch, a reminder that they didn't have all day to waste however much time they wanted locked up in here. Shame too, he was just getting comfortable and had finally stopped thinking about the papers sitting next to him. A glance to the clock behind her told him they were just about out of time.

How many times had he ever complimented her efficiency? He was almost sure he didn't do it enough. Zeke had a just in case of emergencies bag, not only that but it was already packed, sealing the deal right there and making him look forward to date night even more. "Excellent. I'll be sure to pass this along, the girls will be happy enough." They liked sleepovers, whether they were hosting or not. He liked sleepovers when they weren't at the house he was staying, but that was primarily due to the idea of little girls running around, talking about hair, playing dress up, insisting he play with them.

And there was the look, the one that told him their time had now officially expired. There was the slightest hint of a grimace as she got up. "I'm thinking tomorrow." The reluctance in his voice only thickened at the kiss. "I'm leaving early so I can stop by the Apothecary on the way home, need some things to get Avery's medicine started." Things he could have sworn her had already but that child was sick more often than most.

Emily wasn't sure if she should take him seriously or not, despite knowing full well that he was in fact being perfectly serious. But she dearly loved to laugh, and hadn't had much reason to since the lockout... but alas, she didn't, only the upturned corners of her lips hinted at her amusement. "I didn't realise my compliments were under par," said with mild sarcasm, it was as good as he'd get, in fact, he was lucky to get any at all. She didn't bother remedying her poor complimenting or bettering it, nor did she promise to work on her skills for the future. His head was beyond a healthy size as it was, definitely moderately swollen. But pfft, "You are the exception, yes, but I figured even you'd have come to your senses by now.." apparently not.

If she couldn't get him excited about the sleepover, then the girls certainly would... but at any rate, he'd get used to the idea quickly. It would be in his best interest, and he was smart enough to realise there would be no point in arguing about the matter, or insisting on tagging along. "And I'll inform Zeke tonight, plant the seed in his head..." the idea would catch, and grow, and he and the girls could talk plans, because he always had plans. Merlin. Children. She remembered him asking her about her plans with kids and relationships and the like... and that was more or less a year ago. It went without saying she didn't expect things to be as they were now, though she wasn't complaining.

Her apologetic look didn't falter at his own expression or tone, but she did adopt a sympathetic smile. "Tomorrow it is," she confirmed, some more one-on-one time with Zeke wouldn't go astray, no doubt he'd need her help with homework again. The boy was terrible at math. "Send the family, and Avery my best... and give her a hug for me too." Simply because he would be the one administering the hug, in her absence. It was the best form. Patting down her pockets out of habit, Emily moved from behind his desk toward the door, assuring herself that she had everything she needed. "Don't miss me too much," she added before letting herself out, wanting to do one more check of things before moving on.
