Emily sat in the front row of the white chairs. George sat beside her, holding her hand. Their loved ones sat around them in the cool air. The breeze was light, but it was enough to cause Emily’s curls to sway behind her. George brought her hand to his lips and kissed them as the Minister spoke. Emily’s tears hadn’t come yet. They were waiting for her. The Minister asked for them to make their good-byes. Many people stood up around Emily, including George, as they went to give their last blessings to Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks-Lupin. They slowly and quietly said goodbye, and then they returned to their seats. Andromeda and Teddy were the last of the group. Emily watched as they took their seats again. It was Emily’s turn and everyone watched as Emily stood.
Emily’s black satin
dress hung to her hips and breasts. She stepped forward to Tonks’ casket first. Her white, pearly, unmoving body lay before her. She let out a sob from the back of her throat.
“I guess this is it,” she whispered.
“I understand now, Tonks. I understand what you meant. When you told me he’d never leave me, you meant in my heart, he’d never leave me. I should have believed you the first time, but you know how stubborn I can be. He never did break his promise, did he?” she whispered.
“He’ll always be with me. And for that, I thank you, for helping me see, understand. You were the mother I never got to know, the best friend I will always remember, and the sister that will stay in my heart for eternity. I love you, Tonks, and I promise to look over Teddy, my brother.” Emily bent down and kissed Tonks’ forehead. She held out her hand as if she were about to be handed something and the flower from the tree zoomed into her hand.
“I guess it’s time to pick this. Keep it with you forever.” Emily pulled out her wand and whispered a spell that would keep the flower fresh forever and placed it on Tonks’ stomach. Sighing, she walked over to her Godfather.
“You never left me, just like you promised, Rems,” Emily whispered to his still body.
“You are my father, no matter what the birth certificate says. And you will always be with me no matter how far into this earth you are buried,” Emily whispered. She placed her hand on top of his. They were like ice, but she didn’t care.
“Stay with me, Rems. Be my angel. Look after me. Guide me along the way. I need you,” she cried softly.
“And Tonks was right, just like always. I understand why you wanted us to dance to that song now. You knew, deep down, that we wouldn’t have the chance again. I love you, and I’ll meet you under the moon. But then again, you’re probably already there.”
Emily’s voice, soft with sorrow, swept through the air as she sang their song.
“He called her on the road
From a lonely cold hotel room
Just to hear her say I love you one more time.
But when he heard the sound
Of the kids laughing in the background
He had to wipe away a tear from his eye.
A little voice came on the phone
Said ‘Daddy when you coming home?’
He said the first thing that came to his mind.”
Emily’s chin quivered, but she kept singing.
“I'm already there.
Take a look around,
I'm the sunshine in your hair,
I'm the shadow on the ground,
I'm the whisper in the wind,
I'm your imaginary friend,
And I know I'm in your prayers.
Oh I'm already there.”
The sun started beating down on the father and daughter, creeping its way from around the tree.
“She got back on the phone,
Said I really miss you darling.
Don't worry about the kids they'll be all right.
Wish I was in your arms,
Lying right there beside you,
But I know that I'll be in your dreams tonight.
And I'll gently kiss your lips,
Touch you with my fingertips,
So turn out the light and close your eyes. I'm already there.
Don't make a sound.
I'm the beat in your heart.
I'm the moonlight shining down.
I'm the whisper in the wind.
And I'll be there 'till the end.
Can you feel the love that we share?
Oh I'm already there.”
Emily cried even more as the lyrics whispered to her heart. Her dress turned to a
pure white as soon as she sang of the moonlight. She felt the fabric stretch, making its way to the ground. It swayed with the wind and matched her animagus fur. The crowd behind her gasped silently. It bellowed out behind her, but she didn’t flinch. She charmed it to do that.
“We may be a thousand miles apart
But I'll be with you wherever you are.”
Emily’s free hand went to her chest, her heart. She no longer felt cold or hollow inside, but it was warm. She was going to get through this.
“I'm already there.
Take a look around.
I'm the sunshine in your hair.”
She felt the heat from the sun hit her hair as she sang.
“I'm the shadow on the ground.”
The shadows on the ground around her turned darker, as if he were right beside her at this very moment.
“I'm the whisper in the wind.”
The wind whisked around her. Her hair flew around her face, a few strands sticking to her tears.
“And I'll be there 'till the end.”
Emily smiled because she knew he really was going to be there until the end.
“Can you feel the love that we share?
Oh I'm already there.
Oh I'm already
There.”
And he was. He was already there. He was waiting for her. He was on the other side, forever with her. Her tears crept down the side of her face. Emily bent down and kissed Remus’ forehead. Her fingers traced his half of their ring, the very ring he left her in his will. She took it off of his finger and placed it with the other half of hers. It was a perfect match. Their ridges matched up perfectly, and she smiled slightly. She stroked their ring. It was a moon, the very moon they played under every month. In the center of the moon were the words “Meet You Under The Moon” sketched in script.
“I love you, and I hope that you and Tonks are together, watching over us all,” she whispered. After one last look at her Godfather, Emily turned around and went to sit back beside George. He immediately took her hand as the Minister said his last remarks, lifted up his arms and wand, closing their caskets, and sent Remus and Tonks below the russet earth where they could live peacefully and quietly, under
their tree.
