Back to the lesson, Louisa took one glance at the board to remember the quite words. With the Professor there, she really wanted to succeed this time. One tiny blanket please.. One tiny blanket please.. One tiny blanket please..One tiny blanket please.. One tiny blanket please, she thought desperately. " Vestis.. vellus." And quickly closed her eyes.
Well, she wouldn't know if it worked or not like that and … nobody laughed or shouted which meant the result wasn't disastrous. Slowly her eyelids were apart and a small blue woolen handkerchief was laid in front of her in place of the scarf.
Ookaaay. She looked up at the teacher with an uncertain smile. " That… is considered a tiny blanket, sir?" Which what she told her wand to do secretly so she didn't fail. Her eyes moved to the nice boy standing next to the teacher for support. Like he could clap his hands for her or even cheer? She would give him the sweets inside of her pocket if he did. Pinky swear . "Perhaps for a doll, yes," he answered, smiling. "You'll get better at it. Just keep practicing."
----- "If I could have everyone's attention for a moment? We're going to talk about some more spells." Preston paused, waiting for the class to settle down.
Unholstering his wand, he flicked it at the board, adding the words, escarpa and manus under vestis and the words letrom and cotone under vellus. "Vestis was the part of the spell that dictated what you were making. The same can be said for escarpa and manus. Scarf and gloves or mittens, respectively. If you find yourself without those items when the weather turns chill, you can conjure them."
He paused, before continuing. "As I mentioned before, vellus helps focus on what type of blanket you're going to create. It modifies the vestis spell. Once you are proficient and focused enough, you may be able to simply concentrate and use vestis. However, using the modifier is helpful. Letrom and cotone are similar. Letrom designates leather, and likely would only modify manus. Cotone is for cotten. So, vestis cotone would give you a light cotton throw, much like a light picnic blanket. Manus vellus would give you woolen gloves or mittens. And so forth."
He flicked his wand at the board once more, rearranging the words into their likely pairs:
Vestis vellus - wool blanket or throw
Vestis cotone - cotton blanket
Manus vellus - wool gloves/mittens
Manus letrom - leather gloves
Escarpa vellus - wool scarf
Escarpa cotone - cotton scarf "The wand movement for escarpa is simple. You just draw a line in the air, top to bottom, as you say the incantation. Manus is also simple, being a small circular flick." He demonstrated each movement. "Your homework will be, in part, to practice these spells, so don't worry about that now. Give your blanket spell another shot if you'd like and then revert your blankets back into scarfs and let's discuss what other things could be useful in the theme of today's lesson." He paused, a eyebrow raising, "Which, if you haven't guessed, is focused around staying warm. Any thoughts?"
