Chapter Twenty Two

Harry left her to sleep and tucked her in carefully as the knock sounded on the door and he got up to answer it.

“How is she?”
“Asleep” he ran a hand through his hair and sat down,
“Maybe it was too soon, maybe it would be better for her not to come back to school at all”
“She wants to be here and I can’t leave her at home”
“What if she stayed with her parents?”
“I can’t leave her; we’ve had some problems – some – I can’t leave her because she gets worried that I won’t come back”
“Alright, what about you two both just go home; we’d send you the work, would that be easier for you?”
“Honestly it’s not being at school that’s the problem; we were fine until – until Hermione upset her”
“If you don’t want to tell me its fine Harry” The professor started a hand on his shoulder as he shrunk into his lap “There are things I can help you with and things I can not”
“With the baby and Hermione and Ron’s issues and with finding out about Sophia – Molly did tell you, didn’t she?” Harry asked,
“Mrs Weasley did, I’m as surprised as the rest; it is not easy to hide from our world, and to hide a child is even harder”
“So with everything on top of finding out she was pregnant and thinking I would leave her because of it and then thinking I was cheating, and now getting here only to have Hermione say things I could never have imagined coming out of her mouth and upsetting her even more, I can’t leave her and I can’t leave her alone”

He got up and checked she was still sleeping through the half open door,
“Harry, it shouldn’t be like this”
“Then what shall I do?” he sat down again “What can I do to help her because everything just seems to be getting worse – Hermione has made this worse by telling her she shouldn’t have kept the baby, by putting her own insecurities with Ron on us”
“Hermione doesn’t seem like the kind of person to say that”
“She did, in the carriage on the way here, Ginny slapped her, went to attack her, she hasn’t stopped crying until she fell asleep”
“You need to go home; this situation is not good for her”
“I would take too much to get back, she can’t apparate and floo powder makes her faint, we can’t use magic”
“Stay until the Easter break, if things don’t get better by then, the train will be taking students home”
“I’ll try” he yawned,
“Harry get some sleep, if you’re not up to class tomorrow give yourself some time and ease yourself into it”
“Better just to throw myself into it”
“But you won’t be any use to her worn out” she replied standing up “You need any help, need anyone to talk to I am here, your teachers are here for you, we may not have had anything like this here ever before but it is something that we have to work together to help”
“Thankyou” he said as she left, and rubbed his forehead with his fingertips.

He watched her sleep, sitting in the chair until she woke up a few hours later,
“Harry” she mumbled, “Harry”
“I’m here honey” he lay next to her and she snuggled into his chest,
“Don’t leave me” she sounded still half asleep,
“I won’t, I promise” he stroked her hair crying “I’m not going anywhere”
“Good” she mumbled and fell into her slumber once more,
He kissed her forehead softly and turned off the light with his wand falling asleep exhausted beside her.

***
“Ginny?”
“Hmm”
“Are you ready?”
“Yes” she came out of the bathroom, looking a little worse for wear, and sat on the couch beside him,
“Are you sure?”
“It was bad but I think I’m ok now”
“The professors understand if you don’t go to class”
“I have to go to class; people will get suspicious after last night”
“We can just say you’re ill”
“No, no I’m fine”
“But being in there that long, you don’t look well sweetheart, and I’m worried about you”
“I’m fine”
“You keep saying that and I still don’t believe you” Harry said shaking his head and reaching to hold her cheek “What she said to you, it’s still there, its hurting you and you need to stop thinking about it”
“I can’t, she doesn’t want our baby to be alive, she said that – she – she would rather my baby was dead then we attempt to raise her”
“She wasn’t thinking”
“No for once she got straight to the point and said what was on her mind without messing around”
“I don’t think she really meant it”
“Of course she did or those words wouldn’t have come out of her mouth” She held her stomach and heaved “Arghhh”
Harry panicked not knowing what to do “Gin!?”
“Something’s not right”
“We have to get you to Poppy”
Ginny looked down, “NO!” there was red clinging to her skirt and down her legs her hand on her belly,
“Oh god” Harry started “Just – just breath Ginny ok, - Dobby!” he yelled helping her lie down across the couch, he appeared “Bring Madam Pomfrey here – now”
“Yes Mr Potter” he disappeared,
“Harry” she called to him “She’s not going to make it is she” Ginny was crying now,
“Don’t say that” he knelt down in front of her stroking her cheek as the elf and nurse appeared, she passed out,
“Gin – Gin - Ginny!” she didn’t move,

McGonagall appeared behind Poppy –
“Harry?”
“She’s bleeding” he said not taking his gaze from Ginny his hand on top of hers on her belly,
“Has he been sick this morning?” Poppy asked,
“Worse then before”
“How many months is she?”
“About two”
Poppy asked one more “Any other problems?”
She had stomach pains but that was weeks ago, Mungo’s said she was fine”
Poppy mixed three potions together on the table and moved Harry aside gently to pour the liquid down her throat,
“We need to get her to Mungo’s”
“What’s wrong?”
“She – she – I can’t be sure but she might have miscarried”
“NO!”
“Look we just need to get her there, the potion has stopped the bleeding, it should help her but I can’t do anymore for her then that”
Harry lifted her up carefully,
Professor McGonagall was muttering something with her wand around the room, “Let us go, Harry” she put her hand on his shoulder and he felt the pull on his navel holding on to her.
“Ginny Weasley, sixteen, two months pregnant, bleeding – I can’t do anything more at school” Madam Pomfrey said but both her and McGonagall waited in the reception as the healer said,
“Bring her in” He led the way for Harry into a room; “Put her down” He waved a wand over her, while asking “Who are you?”
“Her fiancée”
He turned round, recognised him and then went back to it, “Well, Madam Pomfrey just saved her life”
He breathed a sigh of relief “But the baby”
“Her blood pressure is too high” he moved to mix another potion “She is suffering from a haemorrhage, I can stop it, but it doesn’t mean this pregnancy will go ahead”
“What do you mean?”
“Look I can do what I can but there’s no guarantee she will reach the full term, this could endanger her life Harry and your baby - you could lose them both” he poured a vile of something silver between her lips,
“What do we do, what are our options?”
“You can either end this now or wait and see and we do what we can when the time comes”
“I have to talk to her”
“She won’t wake for a while”
“Can I stay?”
“Of course, she should be fine now – I’ll send someone in to change her clothes”
Harry nodded staring at her and holding her hand, McGonagall came in,
“Molly and Arthur are on their way”
“Uh huh” he didn’t move,
“Harry, can I ask what he said?”
“We have to end it now, or wait for it to possibly kill her”
“I’m so sorry”
“She won’t, I know she won’t, you know she won’t”
“But if it’s -”
“- she won’t; not now she knows she wants it” He stroked her pale cheek with his fingertips “I’m scared I’m going to lose her, I’m going to lose them both and I can’t let it happen, I thought we’d be ok, that there wouldn’t be anything else and now its like we’re just not allowed to be happy”
“Don’t think like that”
“There isn’t any other way; I’m going to lose one or both”
“Harry! What’s happened?”
Molly rushed over, standing the other side and taking Ginny’s free hand patting her hair softly, Arthur stood in the doorway reluctant to come in, a worried, fearful look on his face.
Harry spoke calmly “She haemorrhaged – the baby – we – we have to make a choice”
She gasped, “No, but there wasn’t anything – she’s been fine”
“We thought she was – now it seems Hermione’s getting what she wants” he said bitterly,
“Harry” the professor said warningly,
“Keep her away from us” he said “I’m going to take Ginny home when she wakes” he replied as McGonagall left the room,
“Come back to the Burrow” Molly started, “You don’t need to hide”
“We’re going home”
“Don’t do this”
Harry was trying to get through to her “She won’t want to, she’ll want to come home so that’s where will go”
“She needs looking after”
“I’ll look after her; you really think I’m going to leave her alone ever again after this, she’s not leaving my side”
“You’ll smoother her”
“She told me not to leave her, I promised her, I’m not going to let her down” Harry said angrily “I’m not going to lose her”
Molly looked at him for a few moments and then turned her attention back to Ginny, “What do you mean Hermione’s getting what she wants?”
“Leave it Molly, you don’t want to know” he replied holding Ginny’s hand to his lips to kiss it softly,
“Tell me’”
Harry refused to say another word until Ginny woke three long hours later,
“Harry! Harry!”
“Gin I’m here”
“Is she ok?” Her hand instinctively went to her lower stomach as if she’d be able to know,
“We need to talk but first you both need to rest”
“Both, she’s ok?”
“Gin, you need to rest”
“Tell me Harry”
“Ginny!” Molly said coming back in, “We were so worried”
Ginny didn’t look away from Harry “Tell me”
“We have to make a choice Ginny”
“Harry” Molly said butting in “Don’t”
“She wants’ to know” Harry said “She needs to know, it’s her choice to make”
“It’s not a choice, nothings changed” Ginny said firmly “Take us home Harry”
“Not yet” Harry said holding her cheek to make her lie down, “You need to rest”
“Please Ginny, be sensible”
“I’m giving her a chance mum, she’s going to make it, and I’m not giving up on her when she hasn’t left me yet”
Molly kept going, “You’ll die Ginny; I can’t let you do this”
“It’s not up to you, its up to me and Harry”
“I can’t lose you Gin” Harry said staring into her eyes,
“You won’t” she smiled weakly touching his cheek with her hand,
“You haemorrhaged, the Healer said you either won’t last the full term or if you do they’ll try to save you, I can’t leave your fate up to chance”
“Don’t; leave it up to me, I can’t let her go” She replied looking back just as intently,
“Ginny” Molly tried to plead with her again, “Don’t do this”
“I can’t lose her now” she rolled over to face the other way holding Harry’s arm around her, he sat beside her stroking her hair gently as Molly walked out in tears.
“Ginny” Ron’s voice sounded in the small space, she didn’t move Harry turned to look,
“Is she ok?”
He nodded “We just have to be patient and see what happens”
Ron sat down in the chair “The baby?”
“Still fighting” Harry replied,
Ginny murmured “She’s going to win” and held his arm tighter to her,
“Hermione’s here”
Ginny’s eyes closed,
“She’s not welcome here” Harry said angrily, “She shouldn’t be within a mile radius of my family”
“She wants to apologise”
“She doesn’t deserve a chance, you’d better take her back to Hogwarts because if I see her -”
“She’s been your friend for years; don’t do this now over a mistake”
“My fiancée and our baby nearly died, I don’t care if she made a mistake, I don’t care if she wants a chance for an apology I don’t want her anywhere near us”
Ron dismissed it and kept going “Mum said you guys are going back to Grimmald place; why not go to the Burrow?”
“Because it’s not my home anymore” Ginny replied, “Our home is with Harry”
“You’re not being sensible, Mum can look after you”
She turned to sit up and face him, keeping Harry’s hold on her, curling into his embrace comfortably “Harry can look after us, if I go back to the Burrow I’ll just have both Mum and Dad say that I’m stupid for going along with this, that I should get rid of her to save myself and I’ll find myself believing them – trusting them until I do it and I’ll hate myself for not giving her another chance to survive”
“Why would mum be telling you that?”
“Because there’s a chance that by having my baby it could kill me”
“Then why the hell are you still doing it”
“Why is Harry the only one that understands I can’t, I won’t murder my baby when she’s fighting to live as it is?”
“Because he’s as stupid as you are, a few weeks ago you didn’t want this just as much he wanted it, what would change your mind?”
“I was just scared, I’m not anymore, I’m sure I want this, I want Harry and me and our baby to be a family”
“You won’t be a family if you’re dead!”
“I’m not going to die”
“You just won’t believe it when you’ve got him feeding you lies and fantasies”
“I’ve told her nothing but the truth, she knows what she want, she knows the risks, I’m doing what she wants because I love her, you think I want her to die – of course I don’t but she’s not going to listen and I’m not going to force her to abort our child because she doesn’t want to do it, this is her choice, its not mine, its not yours and its not your parents”
“She’s my sister, she’s not your blood, she’s going to die having your child and you think I could forgive you letting her go ahead with it! You say you love her, stop her making the biggest mistake of her life by killing her self for your child”
“GET OUT!” Shouted Ginny, “GET OUT AND STAY AWAY FROM ME!”
“Ginny calm down” Harry soothed her, his hands on her cheeks looking into her eyes, “Ignore it, ignore him”
“That’s right, just ignore everything that’s reasonable, that’s trying to save your life”
“I’m ignoring him because I know that if I pay attention I’ll kill him” he said still looking into the chocolate brown eyes as the tears fell from them, “I love you, I’m going to stay with you no matter what you chose to do, you’re my everything Gin”
She yanked him forward into her arms, wrapping her arms round his neck, closing her eyes and whispering to him,
“You’re my everything and so is the baby you’ve given me, I’m not giving her up”
Ron walked out as Ginny’s eyes opened; she kissed him and lay down against him on the bed, securing his arms around her. There was nothing like a Harry hug and right now she needed it him to hold her for so long it ached when he didn’t, when his skin wasn’t in contact with her own, when she couldn't smell him around her, when she couldn’t look into his eyes and see that everything was going to be ok.
